Dis Exclusive Once Upon a Fairytale Germany Trip 9/20 - 9/28/2013

I guess it is about that time...

While this is still fresh on my brain, I thought I would throw out some things we learned from our Recent Adventures by Disney Trip to London and Paris. I hope that this reference will help not only those traveling to London and Paris, but to other locations as well

Understand the Power requirements of the locations you are going.
  • Check all of your devices and make sure they are capable of dual voltages!
  • Learn what plug adapters you will need. London and Paris use different power plugs than the ones used in the US and they are different from each other.
  • Get a dual voltage power strip that uses a universal power connector. If you get into a situation where you need to unplug a lamp to get power, you can plug in the lamp into the universal plug.
  • Do not use US Power Strips!! They will not work and could cause a fire.

If you have an Ipad and want to avoid costly internet charges at the hotel, find a SIM Card provider that does not require a credit card on file.
  • I used Vodaphone. They charged £5 for a Sim and 250mb of data. I was able to get an additional 750mb for £15. Very reasonable. I used about 500mb total while we were in London.

Think about the bag you will carry around and protecting your wallet.
  • Think about using a messenger bag over a backpack. It is easier to keep a hand on a messenger bag. I carried a messenger style camera sling bag instead of my backpack. It is not as easy for someone to take items from a messenger bag.
  • Watch your pockets and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

If you use the hotel internet, bring a small wifi router (not access point).
  • When you purchase the hotel wifi or wired internet, you can only use it on a couple of devices. I had my travel router with me. This helped in connecting my Ipad, Blackberry, Iphone, and laptop. The router allowed me to use the wired connection and share that with all of my devices.

If you have free time, plan it out before you go on your trip.
  • We made reservations at a couple of restaurants several months out. These were small cafes and the space went quickly.

Take time to plan out where you want to wander.
  • Know that the most popular locations, in Paris especially, are popular targets for pickpockets and scammers. People will also sell "le crap" at these spots. AVOID THEM. We saw a person buy something and then he was then pegged as a "sucker." And was hit by every illegal "le crap" vendor.

XL = Sausage Skin in Paris.
  • I tried to purchase an XL shirt in Paris but was not happy to find that XL in Paris means body condom in US sizes. They do not sell any thing above XXL, and that was even tight.

Holy Smokes we are at nearly 4 months! Someone gave me a set of plugs to use but I'm going to need a power strip. I was talking to someone else about cell phones abroad and I was getting a lesson about "unlocking" the phone. I'm hoping someone can assist me with this. :flower3:

DH is looking for a "european" wallet so he doesn't have to do origami with the money. Anyone know of any credit card companies that have the chip in them that you can "touch" the device and pay with it?

I think another trip to The Container Store is in my future and more researching!

Pleasde help me welcome Sharon and David to our Fairytale Adventure!

Welcome Aboard...or Abroad!

We were discussing luggage the other morning.:scared: On the other hand our passport appointment is on Friday so that will be done.

Anyone know the weather in July at these Germany locations? (I mean first hand. I know I can also look on the Internet. ;-). )

We are less than 4 months away!!!! How is everyone's planning going??

I'm getting in a day early, and am starting to plan what I would like to see in Heidelberg before the tour starts. From what I can tell, it looks like a reasonably easy city to get around in, and is walkable. A friend recommended seeing the old university, that's definitely on my list.

Also starting to make lists of places I want to see/restaurants I want to go to during the time we're on our own, in each city.

I am ready to go on this trip!!

Please share if you find some interesting places! We are also arriving a day early. I haven't spent much time in preparation for our July trip, as my mind has been on getting DD19 ready for her fall semester of college in London. She leaves soon after our return from Germany! Only thing I've looked into are the locations of the Catholic Churches in Heidelberg and Munich to get to Saturday evening or Sunday morning mass! ;-)

Munich has an abundance of catholic churches. One that a friend of mine at university loved to go to was St Michael, it is directly on the main shopping street. They have an excellent choir and the main Sunday mass (9am) is always celebrated with a lot of music. It is also a very impressive and beautiful building. The church belongs to the Jesuits. Munich's cathredral is the Frauenkirche and another very pretty church is the Asamkirche. I think going to a mass would be a great way to experience a church not just as a sight, but for its true purpose - and Munich is a very catholic city, so it is very fitting.

Thanks for the info!! As practicing Catholics, we always stake out a Catholic Church if we are away over a weekend. Only time we missed mass because of traveling was when we were in the middle of the ocean on the Disney Magic! Lol

We've really enjoyed visiting different churches and meeting the locals. Two visits come to mind:

1. In Bermuda, the taxi that brought us to the church didn't return for us. As we determined our next option, the priest (whom we had introduced ourselves to prior to mass) noticed us and asked a parishioner to drive us back to our hotel! She was so friendly - an American whose husband was working in Bermuda- and we had a lovely conversation about the area.

2. In Paris last year we went to mass, knowing we probably would not understand the prayers in French. As it turned out, the priest was from Ireland, the lector was from Britain, the majority of the congregation was Filipino, and the hymnals were the same from our home parish! Truly the "universal church"!

We are looking forward to seeing the cathedrals in Germany!

The following are highs/lows (in Farenheit) for September for the places we'll be visiting.

Heidelberg: 70/51
Waldeck: 65/48
Rothenberg: 70/46
Munich: 66/47

It should be very comfortable weather for touring!
