Back when I was single and scuba diving, I went on alot of trips solo, and had a blast doing it. DL has to be one of the safest places IMHO to travel solo. Now that I'm married with kids, these solo trips, rare as they are, are very special to me. It gives me time to re-energize, and this year's solo trip in Nov is badly needed after the rotten year I've had so far. The only thing that I didn't like on my Oct/10 solo trip was the walk at the end of the day to HOJO's. While I don't mind walking with a group to and from this hotel, I didn't feel safe doing it solo. But that's just me, other's may not have a problem. This time I'm staying at BWPPI, and am looking forward to staying there. If I didn't do things because of the fear issue, I'd never have had some amazing experiences traveling solo. Don't let fear get in the way of doing things you want to do.

I hear ya about having a rotten year. This year has been very challenging in many ways.

I think walking back to the hotel would bother me too so I'll probably make sure I walk with a group when possible.

I've never gone alone, but on one trip with just DH & myself a few years ago, DH came down with a WICKED stomach bug so I ended up going into DL all on my own. While it was awkward at times, it was kinda nice just getting to do what I wanted to do without having to think about someone else. It was only one day though (we had 1 1/2 days planned at the park, he got to enjoy the first 1/2 day then was throwing up by midnight).

It's awful being sick while on vacation. A similar thing happened to me while in Vegas. I spent half a day in bed. Not fun.

I will be doing my first trip to DLR alone this coming week. I'll be spending three days at DLR plus spending a day doing the Hollywood studio tour thing plus a few more days to take in three baseball games (Dodgers, Angels, and Padres, oh my!). I can't wait!

I used to travel alone quite a bit for work, including spending eight weeks straight on my own in Europe at one point, so I'm kind of used to it. I don't travel for work anymore but no one is willing and/or able to watch all four of our kids for my wife and I get away together, so for a kid-free vacation we have to travel solo. I did WDW solo last year and had a fantastic time. She just got back from Orlando herself for a trip to Universal and WDW.

As others have mentioned, it is great only having to worry about what you want to do. Table service meals can be a little awkward, but otherwise I find traveling solo to be a very rewarding experience. As long as you use a little common sense there is nothing to worry about from a security/safety standpoint. As for as interacting with others, I have found most people at either WDW or DLR are pretty socialable and will chat with just about anyone, so it is really up to you how much you want to interact. In my travels I never felt like anyone was judging me or thought anything of my being by myself.

If you have the opportunity to go solo, just do it!

I would love to go alone and bring my camera and spend the whole day taking pictures. That's something I can't really do with my family or friends because they don't have fun like I do.

We usually do the last weekend in Feb/first weekend in March. Looking at a calendar, probably Feb. 25-March 1, but that will not be decided on until after the 2014 trip.

One time I planned a bus trip with two friends and even bought character pillows for our trip. They cancelled. What is wrong with people, they're not happy until disaster strikes so we can hug each other.
I've been basically going alone ever since occasionally meeting a relative there who leaves early because he's use to it, or taking my mom on a blue moon, but she hates wild rides.
In many ways it is awkward, an adult being by himself, but in the vast crowds you tend to blend in. I know it sounds selfish, but I don't envy a father caring for a large brood. I hate detours, and I know a father with a large family must make accommodations for little kids & his wife, or other relatives that tag along. Meanwhile I'm zipping through the densest of crowds heading from one attraction to the other as if I were in a show called Beat The Clock. I see those families staking out a spot for Fantasmic as early as 6pm, & I don't give it a thought until the beginning of the show where I just sneak right in at a convenient viewable spot. Fastpasses become a playable game of cards when I zip from one park to the other, and get another FP when one is done, and head across the park for next usable FP, then get another one at same or different attraction, by that time FP for other park is coming up!
And I do note the single rider extensively as I breeze on Matterhorn or GRR.
I do feel a bit clumsy at mealtime reserved seats or not, but the final tab is much less disastrous & no dispute on who pays.
I don't have to argue, compromise, or settle for what to do or see next.
I can buy what I want, and shop when I like.
I'm trying to find the total downside but there isn't any, everyone including guests at DL Resort is out to accommodate or enjoy the day no matter who you are. It takes practice, but we know how that goes. As Mary Poppins would say, practice makes "perfect."

Check out my latest trip report in m sig. I just did DLR alone, and it was GREAT!!! Totally different experience than with a family or group. I loved it, but then again, I love every trip and have a phenomenal time every time.

I have no problem going to the park by myself since that means I can go on whatever rides I want to.

How was it to eat at Big Thunder? I have always wondered about eating at family style places solo.

Did it last November on my own at the ripe old age of 50, it was my first visit and I loved it so much I'm going back next year. I never feel lonely at any of the Disney parks as someone will always chat with you. My only con was the lack of affordable transportation back from Anaheim to LAX at 5.30am, the town car was lovely, but, $89 ouch!
