UK Brides/Grooms - Wedding Bands????

In the UK we have this 'tradition/policy' of having 'Bands' read before weddings, someone I know got married in Greece and she still had to go through this process here in the UK.

I haven't seen it mentioned on here by any UK brides so I've assumed that this is not something that we have to do if getting married in the US ... does anyone know what the situation is? I can't find anything at all on this on the net!

Thanks folks :)

:) Hi Claire - really? I thought it was for everyone?

I see from your signature that you have already been married at WDW - so I'm guessing that you did this without a problem - i.e; without the reading of the bands?

Thanks :)

I should have said CoE not Catholic. And yes we didn't have banns read and have been married for 3 years now.

From Wikipedia:

United States

Lord Hardwicke's Act did not extend outside England and Wales, and hence did not become law in the colonies that would later become the United States of America. For this reason, and as a consequence of the American separation of church and state, banns or equivalent notice by publication is not required before marriage in most U.S. states, although most U.S. states require that a marriage license which establishes the freedom of the parties to marry be established before a valid marriage, often a certain number of days before the marriage ceremony. Such license is no more than a legal formality, as the license is not publicized in any significant way.

Actually, funnily enough banns are still "read"'in Catholic Churches- at least they are by me!! The couple's names are printed in the bulletin for the three weeks prior to the wedding ceremony.

The one I went to didn't, I think they stopped doing it in the 80's but I guess some like to stick with tradition.

I think this depends on the church. I live in the US and there's exactly one church that I've been to as lifelong Roman Catholic that prints the banns in the bulletin, and none that I've been to read them aloud. I think it's more of a tradition for that parish, it's certainly not any form of requirement (religious or not) for getting married here.
