As someone who is fairly new to DCL and has only sailed on the new ships, I'm really excited about the changes. We're not looking for a million bells and whistles -- if we were we'd be sailing on RCI's newest ships. We're looking for Disney service, Disney attention to detail and -- dare I say -- Disney magic, in a ship that is modern and has lots of things to do onboard to keep our family busy. I booked a Med cruise on the Magic for next summer knowing that she would be undergoing an extensive dry dock this fall. I would have seriously considered another cruise line otherwise.
Disney is smart. They know that diehard DCL fans would continue to sail on the Magic and Wonder no matter what. To attract new customers, though, the classic ships need some modernizing and some shiny new features. No, they will not compete with the new ships that RCI and Princess have in the works, but they will be very appealing for people who want the Disney experience but demand an up-to-date looking ship with at least a few "wow" features.
