OFFICIAL Disney Cake Chatter Thread - Part III

I really don't think I need fondant either, but I'm planning on ordering through the Grand Floridian (to be delivered to Ohana) and I haven't seen many examples of custom cakes without fondant from there.
If I can get it without fondant for less, then I think DH would be much more happy with the cost. If this goes well, then I expect I'll be able to convince him to let me put a cake into the budget for every Disney trip, but for now neither one of us knows exactly what to expect.

We've had two non-fondant cakes from there and both were fabulous. I'll have to figure out how to post pictures...I've tried photobucket, but the results are always huge.

gluten-free, chocolate with buttercream, fondant decorations with paste flowers. I believe this was an 8in at $65

Gluten-free, corn-free (fondant is made with corn as are most food colourings so the cake and frosting were both chocolate with the backdrop edible image safe for those who were only GF vs those who needed to be corn-free as well. This was $55 for a 6in.

I'm so sorry to ask a most likely redundant question. I've scanned many of the pages but can't find an email for chef Brian. I'm not even positive that I can email him :scratchin. We'll be at BLT on 4/18 my ds bday is 4/23 I'd like a mini cake sent to our room. He doesn't "love" cake but he would eat a cake with fruit fillings or fruit mousse. DD and I are cake fanatics and use a fantastic bakery in Boston for all birthdays but his. He likes Funfetti cakes from a box ! I just need to see if he can accommodate fruit. It's also my bday and I would love a mini red velvet. Hoping for that as well.

Is there anything else you would do in lieu of a cake for DS? He's going to be 15... sweet, lovely age ;) If so where can I get it?

Thanks!!

I think that to keep down the number of emails Chef Brian gets, no one posts his email address publicly. Go to the first page of this thread and get the phone number for the Contemporary Private Dining. Call and tell them you want to order a specialty cake and they'll give you his email address.

So here is the pic, the cake was very pretty but the Tiara kinda sunk in before we got to the room. I had it ordered to AoA at 8:30 and we didn't make it back to the room before Midnight, so our fault.

It was a mini cake white with Bavarian icing.
Rapunzel Tiara and braid with flowers and a sign that said happy 1st anniversary
was $45

Price $85
Date ReceivedMarch 24, 2013

Cake info - Flavors, special requests, etcChocolate cake with chocolate buttercream frosting
Anything else special about that particular cakeCake was a TEST TRACK themed cake. When it arrived and I saw it I was confused with the color choices, but after heading to Epcot the next day and riding the NEW Test Track, I totally "got" the cake. I was extremely disappointed in the "Test Track" edible cutout. As you can see with the pictures, it is small and very sloppy. They could have just left that off and if I recall correctly, I told them to NOT include any edible cut outs. Oh well. As for the cake, it was DELICIOUS. The frosting was not what we Southern Girls know as "buttercream" though. It tasted more like a "cool whip" type frosting--it was VERY good, though. I loved the overall design but wished that I had done more research on the new design and purchased a CONCEPT CAR--which you can buy in the Test Track gift shop instead of using the old cars. A new concept car on top of that blue cake would have been fantastic! Sooo, if you order a Test Track cake, make sure to get your hands on the concept car and get it to the chef! My son LOVED the cake and that is all that really mattered to me! Here are some pics!

That is pretty! I was thinking of doing something like this for DH since he loves all things cars (being a mechanic) I though he might like it.

Thanks for the pics and info on the gluten free cakes. Which bakery made these? Maybe I missed it earlier in the thread? Also, how was the taste?

Where were these cake made.

The Grand Floridian has made our cakes - the Gluten-Free chocolate is okay as far as GF cakes go. DH and the kids really enjoy them, but I am a bit of a cake snob (I make the BEST ever GF chocolate cake) and this doesn't quite compare to that - this is spongier where as mine is more moist - but then really before going GF completely I'd never tasted a real chocolate cake that compared to mine. :rotfl2:

The cakes we ordered from the GF taste better than any other Gluten-free cake we've paid money for.

Wow! This is exactly the kind of detail I want for my cake (now I'm torn again...I had almost decided that I was going to skip a cake for this trip and wait until we were actually celebrating something)
It's nice to know that they can still come up with something gorgeous for such a reasonable price.

We are going to be dining at 1900 park fare late this month and after finding this thread I so want to order a mini cake or small cake for my girls!! Thinking something cinderella themed since we will be doing the character dining! Has anyone worked with the grand Floridian bakery on a cinderella or princess themed cake or mini cake?

Does anyone know if I am able to get a cake that is gluten free AND nut free? I have one daughter with celiac disease and one with peanut allergy. We are having a birthday dinner at BOG. I will also ask on the DISabilities board, but figured all the cake experts are here. Forgive me for not being able to read every thread for this info.
Thanks so much for any help or suggestions!!

At BOG there can be issues getting a cake at all - but that being said the contemporary bakery should be able to accommodate - otherwise the GF one. I know last trip most bakeries told us they wouldn't even guarantee GF let alone GF and Corn-free - but the GF said there is no issues at all b/c they make their own stuff and use separate areas. However we do not have peanut issues so never asked about them specifically.

Last trip we tacked my brithday on as an after thought just so I could order a cake. This trip we're getting a cake for our DDs birthday - we're there in 20 days, and her birthday isn't until Aug. :rotfl2:

Just find something to celebrate and make it so - the cakes are fabulous and worth the cost (IMO) for the wowed looks of other diners alone.

See...that's my feeling exactly. I want to shock & awe. I suppose I could say it's for DS's birthday in July, or even my sister's in June. I guess I should probably just call and see what kind of quote I get. We leave for our trip a week from Sunday.

To get a cake delivered to Ohana, I call Private Dining at the Grand Floridian, where I will talk to Pat, correct?

Have their been any Tangled cakes? I would love a buttercream frosting cake with a tree scene of Tangled where she comes out and sees all the flowers for the first time...:) My birthday is this September and I really want a fun cake..have had my miseries of birthdays and declaring that this one is going to be a blast! :)

Yes, you would call and talk to Pat. :thumbsup2

Just a few pages back someone posted a Tangled cake. It had a lot of flowers and her hair. Check that one out!:)

We arrive next Sunday (Easter) for our 20th wedding anniv trip. We have reservations Sunday night at Tony's for dinner. If I call tomorrow to order a mini two tier cake is that feasible in this time frame?

Thanks for any info.

Back home :( - had a great trip though the spring break crowd was madness!

I thought I would post a follow-up and share our experience. I left a message Sunday night after I posted and had a return phone call Monday before 11 am. I believe her name was Caroline, very nice and said no problem for my cake request (gray buttercream, yellow mickey heads, chocolate cake with dark chocolate mousse, yellow rose on top) on a mini two tier with 20 Magical Years on the plate.

Our dinner reservation was at 4:55 Easter Sunday at Tony's. When we checked in there was a look between the two women standing there and I thought great - they know about the cake. Not so. We were seated at what they called the Romance Table which had a lit single taper red candle on it. I was still thinking positive though because of the look. We ate dinner and then the waitress offered us dessert. Still thinking positive, she offered dessert so DH doesn't catch on, and then she brought the bill. No charge on the bill for the cake. When she came back, I whispered to her that there was supposed to be a cake. She leaves and of course DH wants to know what is going on.

A gentleman whom I assume to be a manager then appears with our cake. DH was super surprised! As was I when I was told they were so sorry and there would be no charge for the cake!

The cake was delicious and we are still talking about how good it was.
