Buying DVC on a cruise

arent resale points only good at disney? not for trade through rbi on disney cruise lines? for some that may be a benefit. I am not a fan of being limited as to how I can use my points.

Frankly money is no object to us. I understand it is to others.. We will enjoy our direct purchase purchase. Flame suite on!,,

That is great for you!! I purchased my points with luxury money which I'm very happy to be in the position to have. I am very careful about spending and always have been that is just my nature. I don't think anyone wants to flame you. We are all free to make choices. It is just important that everyone has all the information so that can make the right choice for them whether it is through direct purchase or resale. I'm sure we will all equally enjoy our points. That is why we are here.

Hi we went on a Disney cruise in sept want we almost bought into it. But I told my husband lets wait, I remember

Sorry didn't finish I told my husband about how many people were Selling their timeshares we should see if Disney has the same thing. We didn't know anything about dvc until the cruise. But my question for the people that buy direct is have you used it for a cruise? What does it give you. Everybody keeps telling me is that it's not worth it. So why buy direct?

I was able to purchase our two contracts with cash and could have afforded direct prices. But beyond the fact that paying double made it nearly impossible to see any sort of savings on our accommodations, we also knew that all that extra cash would pay for a lot of flights to Orlando and quite a few years of annual passes. Different strokes, I guess.

I believe you mean flame "suit" on, but there's really no need. What you're saying is a value judgement and values differ from person to person. If you are truly in that stable a position where you can afford to throw money around without thought, then at least you are being honest about your reason for buying direct. It's a lot better than listening to the financial gymnastics people go through to make their direct purchase sound like the best investment ever. Really, though, I have no need to flame you because I can't address the validity of your the comment as it pertains to you. You're either telling the 100% truth, kidding yourself, or trolling. I don't know you, so I can't say.

But the fact of the matter is that there are people out there for whom time is more valuable than money. It's a matter of personal preference as to what point you have to get to in order to ignore the savings of resale in favor of the convenience of direct. But I do know that many wealthy people get that way by being prudent with their money, not by throwing it around. I can't see ever reaching a point where I would forgo the savings of resale and buy direct, no matter how much money I had. But if someone does decide to do that, then that's their call and it's not my place to judge. So whether you intended to or not, your brash comment actually sparked a meaningful discussion. So thanks. :)

arent resale points only good at disney? not for trade through rci or disney cruise lines?

this is not exactly accurate. here are the facts:

resales YES:

DVC resorts
RCI trades
Club Intrawest trades
Club Cordial trades

resales NO:

disney cruises trades
disney hotel trades (poly, POFQ, etc.)
adv by disney trades
concierge collection trades

for some that may be a benefit. I am not a fan of being limited as to how I can use my points.

DVC points can be a good value (at resale prices, not so much direct prices) compared to onsite hotel costs. using them for trading for cruises or wdw hotels is typically more expensive than paying cash...(and that's assuming you can even get a trade for a cruise after you've paid double - see the link on page 1.)

if you are one of those people for whom money is no object, buy direct and use the points however you like. salespeople love people like you. and when you decide to sell, someone like me will appreciate the opportunity to scoop up pts for a fraction of what you spent. that's great that you are spreading the money around.

but for people who care about value, i'll continue to encourage them to pay attention to the cruise point charts to see the actual costs of that perk (and how little value they'd lose by accepting that "limitation").

when did I say money was no object to me? I think you are getting your posters mixed up. Money is very important to me. I misunderstood what the dos and don'ts are of resale points. I still don't like being limited as to how I can use resale points. And I never said I wouldn't by resale, just stated I didn't like it.

What we shouldn't like is that Disney who many feel can do no wrong, has deliberately created the restriction to penalize resale buyers to increase their profit. :sad2:

I agree everyone needs to do research resale versus direct but direct is sometimes an ok way to go. We have a VGC contract in ROFR at the moment but with what we had to offer to secure and have a hope of passing ROFR, closing costs and the fact it is a little more points than we really wanted (15) I would have happily bought direct if Disney had the points to sell me which they don't. For what I am saving it is not really worth the hassle of resale and the point restrictions but Disney has no points available.

Why don't you get on the VGC waiting list? You'll get the points you want.

Easy there, I think you're taking offense where none was intended. Charles was speaking in generalities, it's up to you (and the other readers) to determine how applicable his advice is.

That being said, I hate to tell you that you are already limited in how you use your points, even if you do buy direct. The number of Disney Cruises that you can use points on is significantly less than the number of actual cruises. Nights at Disney Collection and Concierge Collection hotels often use so many points that a typical 160 point contract will only get you two or three nights in those hotel rooms. Disney frequently talks about the possibilities of different ways to use your points, but what they don't talk about is the logistics of using your points. They are two very different things.

One final thought...if money is very important to you, then you should really take a look at the value you get for your points when you use them outside of DVC resorts. Spoiler alert: it's not good. :)
