OFFICIAL Disney Cake Chatter Thread - Part III

Just ordered our 3rd cake through Pat at GF - so far we've loved dealing with her and have loved our cakes each time. We have a couple annoying dietary restrictions which make decorated cakes difficult to have. Each time our needs have been accommodated beautifully and creatively.

This time is for our little girls 5th birthday - Doc Mcstuffins theme 10in gluten-free chocolate with dark chocolate mousse $92.

At first Pat wasn't sure if Doc Mcstuffins would be okay or not - due to the new licensing rules or something, but Pat sent a msg off while we discussed an alternate design idea and before we were done discussing the cake she received a message saying Doc was okay to do. I'm actually really excited about the possibility of the alternate cake (BTMR), but since Doc is doable and it's my DDs first choice we went with that instead.

I know others have had issues/concerns working with her, but so far we've had no problems over the course of 2.5 years and 2.5 cakes. I doubt there'll be any issues this time either. Though tis time she was a lot more chatty than in the past, though maybe having worked with us previously and recalled us helps?

I am dying to see a picture of the Doc Cake. My daughter is obsessed and trying to convince DH to take her again in July (after our trip in May) for her birthday.

I just ordered a 10" Dumbo themed cake with a matching cupcake for my daughter's first birthday next month. It's the night before our wedding, so there will be around 15-20 people at dinner. I spoke with Lillian from the Boardwalk private dining and she was wonderful! We plan on going to the ESPN Club at around 7 and the cake will be delivered at 8. I decided on marble cake with vanilla buttercream. I can't wait to share pics!

I can't wait to see them too. Wow there are gonna be a lot if great pictures coming soon.

They sound really cute. I hope you post some pictures of them both.

Yeah I know it will probably be a lot of cake but I want the mini stitch cake just to see what they come up with :yay:
Chef Brian did a cake for my daughter in October and it was just adorable!
Of course pics will follow

I know that I have not been on this board long. A while back I was getting ideas from you guys about a graduation cake for my son. We came up with the idea of a blueprint design with RnR coaster theme. I was talking with Chef Brian and he said no he could not do. They did not have a blueprint of RnR theme. I then asked if we could do any blueprint and just add a guitar...no again. HE would not budge. I was very nervous about calling Pat due to all the unkind remarks and I was prepared for a no again. She put me on hold and came back about 5 minutes laster with a big YES. I understand that she is very short with her words or whatever...but Brian can be as well. Yes, he may be more accommodating, but he still says no as well. My point is...just because one of them says no does not mean another will say no as well.

I had a similar response from Chef Brian - so maybe we both happened to catch him on a bad day? :confused3

His responses through email were rather terse (even when read in the happiest of voices) and in complete contrast of the way he is portrayed by other members on the DIS boards. From everything I had read about him, I'd envisioned someone who wanted to work with other peoples ideas and improve upon them. Unfortunately, my lofty expectations were quickly lowered when I received my first "no", a second "no" to a follow up question and then finally a third "this is all I can suggest". This was over the course of several days, so maybe he was having a bad week? Or maybe his email got hacked and an evil droid was responding in his place? lol. I'd like to think the latter...but I'm showing my Doctor Who side...

Anyway, Chef Brian wasn't able to accommodate our request - Sofia the First cake.

I did not find him to be the "typical Disney employee" - translation - there was nothing magical or special in our interaction. I've talked/emailed a lot of people at Disney the last 4 months and all of them were extremely helpful. He may be talented, possibly the nicest guy on the planet, but he didn't come across like that during my interaction with him. :confused3 It was disappointing to say the least.

The problem now is that I still want to order a Sofia styled cake...just not with him. :sad2:

Pat mentioned this problem to me - licensing - she did suggest a place to send complaints to - I didn't bother asking for the addy though b/c I was able to get what I wanted, plus we had plenty of ideas so wouldn't have been too upset to begin with.

If I was to do a Sophia cake, I'd have the cake sides draped and decorated like her dress, then instead of a likeness of her, maybe items that fit her - a riding helmet, the amulet that kind of thing decorating the cake - if it was for my little girl it'd be a cake like the dress, and then an image of the cave and drums (when sophia meets the trolls) because that's just how my kid rolls. But I was lucky and my little girl had no shortage of ideas on what she wanted for her cake (little mermaid, tarzan, BTMR, HM, Sleeping beauty and many more).

I immediately thought of the dress draping/amulet/tiara visual too! There couldn't be a copyright on lilac draping, right!? Is Contemporary your only option? (It was ours bc birthday dinner is at Chef Mickeys) if not, maybe try another baker? If it IS, maybe give Chef Brian another try? Maybe use a different email address! Just kidding!

I've made her cakes for all her parties so I know what I asked for wasn't impossible or unrealistic.

I suggested a two tier cake - the bottom to look like her dress and the top tier to look like her tiara. 6" bottom 4" or 3" top. Or 8" bottom with 4" top.

We went back and forth and I felt as though he just didn't want to do that type of cake?

There was no mention of licensing of the character.

My DD loves sofia and if I could make her cake myself I would but we are celebrating in WDW at CRT for her birthday.

Oh well. :(

Apparently, the idea I had wasn't that original. I wasn't asking for the character, just a cake that looked similar to her dress. We will be at CRT so he is our only option.

I thought about just calling and seeing if they would do just an 8" but I really was hoping for that tiered cake look.

You know, I considered using a different email address. Lol

Has anyone had decorated cupcakes? Any pictures? I looked through the picture thread but they seemed to be all cakes :(. I was just wondering if those could be customized or not?

I'd definitely call private dining at the Contemporary and see if they can deliver the kind of cake you want to BOG before giving up. It could be that what you want will fit in the cooler there.

Success! Just got an email back from Chef Brian. We will be getting a 6 inch Haunted Mansion cake with black roses and one red rose (my special request) delivered to BOG on May 16 for $75.

So glad I found this thread.

These posts are mostly pix of minicakes, but there are some cupcakes in there too:

Hooray!

We are celebrating my dad's birthday at Tutto Italia. But I do not like the cakes that they offer. Are you allowed to bring your own cake? I am thinking about having the Boardwalk Bakery make it and then just pick it up and bring it to dinner. Is this allowed?

Pat at GF did this one for us in Feb. My girls are twins, and they love Think and Periwinkle. It was fabulous. I believe it was $75.

Did you mention a budget, because maybe that was part of the problem? Just from my own perusal of this thread (I have yet to order a cake myself, so I'm definitely not an expert) a cake like that would likely cost close to $200.
I have seen him customize slightly larger versions of the mini wedding cakes for less though.

Awesome! I'm glad to know that they're accommodating some requests to have cakes delivered there.

How pretty!

Soo...I finally caved (I think I'm incapable of surprises) and mentioned to DH that I was planning on surprising him and the other members of our party with a cake. He just doesn't think the cost is worth it. Then I showed him my sketch and he said "they would make it just like that?" and I said probably... and he was kind of impressed... and said that it was up to me. Granted, I have no idea how much a cake based on my sketch would cost. I have a rough idea, but it could end up being quite a bit more.

Now I'm thinking that since this is my first cake and we have no occasion to celebrate (stupid April not having any holidays) that it may be better to just go with a mini wedding cake, even though we likely wouldn't have anything left over.

I can't decide! We leave for our trip on April 13th, so I need to make a decision and put in an order next week or so...

Here's the rough sketch I did for the cake I want.

I'm not opposed to some alterations, but it's the basic idea. I think I probably should pick between Big Ben and the Pirate ship flying across the moon (for space and cost) but I definitely want the flowers and foliage to be reminiscent of the Neverland (as in lots and whimsical-like).

I guess I should probably just plan on calling and see what kind of response I get. If I'm underestimating the cost too much, then I don't think I could even justify it, as much as I love cake. I can always save my cake idea for when we're actually celebrating something, or traveling with more people.

Love the design! The ship flying across the moon is one of my fave parts of the movie so I am a huge fan of seeing it incorporated into the cake. I don't know how you wanted them to do Big Ben...but it might reduce costs some if they were to start with an edible image and add little details to enhance it. Either way- fabulous idea! :thumbsup2

The anniversary cake I ordered for my parents was a hit! They were totally surprised! When the server at Tony's brought out the cake, they said something to the effect of "We hear someone here is celebrating a special anniversary" and my parents were looking around like "who?". They're actual anniversary date isn't until May, so they really weren't expecting anything. It was great to surprise them!

We ordered an 8" vanilla cake with buttercream icing (and filling) from the Contemporary. Chef Brian did a great job on the cake! The buttercream filling was probably a bit much, but I wasn't sure how the kids would like any of the other fillings (they are 6 and 3), so it was the best choice. The buttercream all around was delicious, though!

Even with 6 adults and 2 kids, we had leftovers! The 6" cake would have been enough, I think.

Anyway, onto pictures! Here is the "sketch" I'd sent Chef Brian:

I had also sent him pictures from my parents' wedding, as I was trying to create something reminiscent of the event.

And here's the actual cake:

The cost was $77 (+ the automatic 18% gratuity added because of our party size).

We really couldn't be happier with how it all went. I would absolutely order a cake from the Contemporary again!

I think it would really depend on size - I'd say for 10in (10 people) you'd be looking at roughly $100, for a 6 in (6 ppl) you'd be looking at $75 you can have BIg Ben and the ship on chocolate, the flowers in fondant/paste and painted. If you are okay without fondant over the cake/just buttercream then the cost is lower. The fondant work is where the price jumps up - but the cake you're showing can be made beautifully without fondant.

BTW I love the idea the ship sailing past the moon has always been one of my favourite parts of the movie.

You can bring your own cake—the restaurant just isn't allowed to store it for you at any point. :thumbsup2
