Hakuna Matata - Fit and Fabulous in February

windwalker said:
Wow Rick that's a lot of traveling.

My races for this year are:

A 4 mile local race on April 13th

The Ky Derby half on April 26th

The Senior Olymics July 30th and 31st

After that some local 5Ks and a 10K until Oct when I'm planning the USATF Masters championship 5K in Kingsport Tenn. That is if I'm strong and ready since I will be up against the best 40 and over race walkers in the country.

In 2014 I may do the Flying Pig half or the Nashville half, not sure yet, but probably Nashville.

Then a repeat of this year and preparing for the 2015 Goofy.

Davepirate:

Dave, this is just my 'paired down' list. I only want to do ONE team race in 2014, and I would choose from one of these four. I couldn't pick just 'one' so I thought I'd pick my top four and then when everyone else picks their top choice, maybe one of my choices will line up with everyone else's.

My actual race schedule for 2013 is 'crazy full' and posted on my blog site. The only thing I can say in its defense is "It's fewer than my 2012 list" LOL

2014 will likely just include our team race (whatever that ends up to be), the Space Coast Half Marathon, and maybe the Crystal Lake Half Marathon (I live here but have never run my hometown's Half).

Before I forget again, here's my weekly challenge stuff:

Weight
No Change @ 246

Exercise
Completing a weekly workout challenge = 0 Never could complete a full set
0 hours of exercise = 0 points - treadmill had been gathering dust instead of miles since Marathon Weekend. On the bright side, March is usually when it gets warm and light enough that I start back up outside! I really need to start, if I have any hope of doing well at the Flying Pig in May.

Healthy eating
Drinking 8 glasses of water a day = 4 points
Trying a new healthy food or recipe for the week = 0 points
Taking a multivitamin daily = 6 points, I ran out and didn't have them for 1 day! ooops! :rolleyes2
Eating five servings of fruits and veggies daily = 0 points
Eating two servings of dairy daily = 2 points

Vicky, I'm looking forward to the new exercise. :)

Lynn: Will be thinking of Scott on Monday. Hope all goes well.

For my races, I choose in no particular order:
Niagara Falls Marathon
Hershey Half Marathon
Marine Corps Marathon

Space Coast would be my first choice but I'm not sure that I could work out the scheduling (with the holidays). I'm certain I would enjoy Hotlanta ;) on July 4 but not looking forward to the heat.

10-mile walk with a friend this morning. Our pace was only 17mm but it was rather hilly and on a trail. Quite slippery too once the snow started falling, but, oh my, what a beautiful sight. I also broke my personal challenge to not purchase any fast/restaurant food on the way home. I stopped by Dunkin Donuts for a small coffee since I was cold and soaked.

I think the races I could probably make happen would be;

Hershey Half

or

Space Coast Half

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Thanks for the exercise challenge, think I could actually do that one!

Elizabeth - Thanks for the thoughts for Scott.

AFM - It was warmer yesterday, so I braved the wind, actually only about 15-20mph, to walk the dogs. I do need to get back to the weights for the next 2 weeks. We also did get a bike ride in to get the newspaper (.8mile)

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hello everyone! It's been awhile, but I'm back. I've registered for the 2013 Tower of Terror 10 miler. This was my next stop. I missed the motivation and friendships. Hope everyone is well.

Jack

Good Morning Team!

We are in Ft. Collins at the Orthopod office waiting to get Scott checked in for knee surgery, we are a bit early. I will probably be here most of the day, surgery scheduled for 11:30, should take an hour, then recovery.

Have a great day all!

Hi team! Happy Monday and Presidents' Day or Family Day :) Hope everyone is enjoying the day off or if you have to work, I hope it's quiet and goes by quickly.

So the stats from last week are:

Dave 16 points/-0.33%
Elizabeth 21 points/-0.63%
Hung ??points/0.98%
Kim ?? points/0%
Kimberly 10 points/0.81%
Kipp 12 points/0%
Lynn 31 points (28 + 3)/-1.96%
Rick 24 points/0.96%
Robbie 30 points/0.26%
Vicky 32 points/0.29%

So the biggest loser of the week is Lynn!! Woo-hoo! If I made a mistake with the points or percentages let me know. And a reminder about the exercise of the week:

http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=47513557&postcount=57

**Exercise for the week**

Since a lot of people mentioned having trouble balancing, I thought maybe an exercise to work on balance would be good. It will help with your running too

So this week the exercise is simple to balance on one leg for 20-30 seconds and try working your way up to 1 minute. Let's try for 3 sets, making sure you do both the right and left legs for each set. Sound easy?

Use your arms to balance and stand near a wall or chair in case you do lose your balance.
Engaging your core muscles will help to keep you stable

If the sets become easy, try doing the balance work in barefeet or standing on a soft pillow to create instability.

Hi all!!

Lynn ~ Sending lots and lots of pixie dust your way!!

Jack ~ Enjoy!!! I want to do it again so badly (it's my chance at "perfection" with a Disney race), but the store is trying to implement a "one weekend per month" policy which we are trying to fight, but don't know if it will work or not - and I'm already signed up for Hartford the following week.

Elizabeth ~ Sounds like a pretty walk though!

In terms of a team race, of those listed, Mohawk-Hudson is probably the only one that's realistic for me based on timing and expenses. Though Toronto *might* be a possibility.

AFM ~ Did my first relay yesterday - the Prospect Park Track Club Cherry Tree 10 Miler or relay. In the relay we each did a loop. My team - the SloHoMos - came in 40 our of 43 female teams, but we had fun and were ridiculously consistent in our loops, each of us averaging between 11:37 and 12mm. It was cold and there was a headwind from you know where that remained a headwind no matter where you were, but it was fun. :) Today was the elliptical at the gym. Tomorrow morning I'm going to try a spin class for the first time in years. We were supposed to have the whole week off this week, but thanks to Sandy and the calendar already being at close to the minimum number of days for school, we have to go back on Wednesday. Boo. :(

Lynn - Lots of PD for Scott! I hope all goes well! Keep us posted :) I saw pictures of his walker. I loved the streamers and all the other additions!

Jack - Welcome back! Tower of Terror is on my to-run list. One of these days I'll get to doing it. I can't remember the last time you posted but we have several new teammates now. Do you want reintroduce yourself to the group :)

Kipp - I'm the same way with the TM - I'd much rather be outside than running on it. Have you registered for the Flying Pig yet?

Elizabeth - I'd get a coffee too if that was the case. No fun being cold! Good job on the 10 miler! Is your friend training for a race as well.

AFM - I was at the gym on Saturday and did weights and metabolic exercises on my own for about 1.5 hours. It's a little bit different doing them on my own because I'm used to working with my chiro. I think I got in a good workout though - lots of core and weight exercises.

I ran for a bit outside Sunday and this morning. It felt pretty good except that it was super windy both days. And naturally the wind died down as soon as I made my turn around to go home so I just had the wind in my face and not at my back. Talk about an extra workout LOL. I had pretty good splits for the run today. Managed to get a few splits in the 8:36-8:58 m/m range and the rest were between 9:00-9:42 m/m

Back to work tomorrow unfortunately. Hope everyone is doing well!

Kipp - I'm the same way with the TM - I'd much rather be outside than running on it. Have you registered for the Flying Pig yet?

I'm impatiently awaiting my tax returns. As SOON as they hit, I'm registered.

I was hoping that I would have enough "left over" from my tax returns to get a bike, but it looks like I'm going to be short. I've been searching the local ads for people selling... but it appears that most people buy bikes for 6 foot tall people. Short man on a tall mans bike is not a fun thing to try!

Anyone else doing Flying Pig with Rick and Kipp? Sounds like a fun race! I also keep looking at Space Coast but what an awful weekend to travel.

Welcome back, Jack! A friend, new to running at Disney, is asking me to run that one with her this year. She asked me right after I told her I wasn't going back to Disney until 2015, and of course I'm thinking about it.

Beth, good to see you post again.

Lynn: Glad to see the pic of Scott looking pain free. Hope he continues to do well!

AFM: Quick, 3-mile run today. Will try to squeeze in 45 minutes on the treadmill tomorrow.

Good Morning Team! Thanks all for the well wishes and PD! Scott is doing well, got out of bed walking last night, on CPM (constant motion machine) this morning. He is asking for his laptop, so I guess he feels alert enough to get on internet. Good job on the runs!

Vicky - I am very surprised to be biggest loser, it will probably be a one time thing! Not doing so well so far this week, too much eating, not enough exercise. Thanks for the PD. Yes, he did have fun decorating his walker, actually, the streamers belong on my walker, his arrived in the mail yesterday so I will take them down to him today.

Elizabeth - Thanks, so far Scott seems to be doing well.

Kipp - Try your local bike shops for used bikes, at least ours sell used bikes.

Beth - Thanks for the Pixie dust. Glad you had fun in your race! Yes, I am very familiar with those headwinds, happens to us all the time cycling!

AFM - I did get a 20 min walk in yesterday, it was windy in Colorado (unusual). Today I plan to get dogs for a walk before heading South this morning, it is cold out (10F) but, so far, no wind.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Lynn - Glad to hear that Scott is up and moving. Loved the picture with him and Simbaa! I had to Google what a constant motion machine was. It sounds like it's something to flex the knee? Most of the links are for YouTube which isn't allowed at work. You never know on the Biggest Loser thing. Keep warm it sounds chilly out there!

Elizabeth - Good job on the 3 miler! That was my concern about the Space Coast as well but the medals are pretty awesome! I won't be going to the Flying Pig. It's the weekend after the Nike 1/2 and probably wouldn't be up for running it. How's all the cookie distribution going? How's your DD?

Kipp - Same on my tax return. I usually try to reinvest the refund though so I'm usually poor for the first few months of the year LOL I'm also looking at getting a bike too - I might have lucked out because a coworker who's getting serious about tris is selling her's and we're about the same height. Are you getting a road bike or a hybrid?

AFM - Not much of import to report since yesterday. I went out to see The Impossible. It's a great movie - fantastic acting, well paced and amazing scenes with the tsunami waves. It was definitely hard to watch in parts but definitely worth seeing.

After the movie, a bunch of us decided to grab a quick bite in the food court but that was a bit tricky. We were all trying to avoid carbs, fried foods and refined sugar. The food court is not the place for that exactly. I ended up grabbing a Greek salad with grilled chicken so I felt like I was being good. Hopefully, the extra running and gym workout from the weekend will make a difference on the scale this week. Fingers crossed!

How is everyone else doing with their eating and workouts? :)

Hey all!!

Lynn ~ Glad to hear Scott is doing well!! Continued pixie dust!!

Elizabeth ~ Good job with the 3! I'm doing the Country Music Half so I won't be doing the Pig. I'm excited to run where my parents and their friends can see me (well, my parents have seen me at Disney, but still...).

Vicky ~ Great job on the good choices!!

AFM ~ I went to my first spin class since last century (literally!) this morning. Muchos admiration for all you cyclists!! It was tough!! The instructor was great though, really encouraging me to just do my best and that he mainly wanted me to focus on my pedaling and adding and removing resistance and not get stressed if I couldn't stay up the whole time. Which I couldn't. But I pedaled the whole time. :) I think when school is out I'm going to plan on going Tuesdays and Thursdays for my XT.

How is everyone else doing with their eating and workouts? :)

I would like to get a hybrid, but wouldn't be against getting a road bike. Road bike style is what I rode up until I got hit. Just being older now, I'm not sure how I'd be at riding in that position any more.

I've looked at some of our shops around here and they mostly have the more expensive type bikes in for resale :( In most of the cases, their lowest priced hybrid bike was cheaper to get than the resale bike. Also, I have the same disadvantage in getting the used bikes.. I'm short.

My first road bike was actually a kids model and I rode it until it literally broke in half. The last road bike I had I bought used and it was too big for me. It led to one or two instances of... needless to say I learned to side dismount in a hurry for quick stops.

As for how it's going this week... yes, I'm eating. We'll leave it at that.

Exercise, the balance workout is going much better than the other. I'm really feeling it in the sides though!

Last night was also my first night back onto the Treadmill-o-doom! I didn't want to push too much, so I did a fartlek routine. 5 minute warmup then I started alternating between 12:00, 15:00 and 18:00 mm. I did a whopping 1.75 miles in 26:40. I felt it a little bit in the calves this morning. Once I did the stairs up to the floor my office is on at work, it took care of that in a hurry.

I've also been working on my sore back again. I'm trying a variety of stretches to see if I can figure out which ones will help. I'm convinced that its the Psoas in my mid/lower back area that's always my problem (at least from muscle group pictures I've looked at, it looks like that area). I've been focus in on some of the stretches that are aimed at that area and I've found one that I'm severely limited in motion in the left movement.

Its one where you lie on your back and bend your knees with feet on the floor. Then you take your knees towards the floor on the right then go to the left without lifting your hips. When I go to the right, I can go about 3/4 to the floor. When I move to the left, I cannot even get half way to the floor. It's also evident when I'm sitting in a chair; I can turn right easily, but turning to the left I'm limited.

Annnnd... I'm rambling on :) It's late and I have to get up early.

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Yes, the constant motion machine has your leg strapped in, and it moves it in and out to flex the knee, does it very slowly, so not like riding bike. It is getting colder, expecting some snow later today.

Kipp - Good luck in your quest for an affordable bike that fits you. I guess that is one advantage to a bike shop, although you may have to pay more, you can order the correct size. Good luck with your back stretches.

Beth - I have never been to spin class in spite of having a spin bike, but I think the class is much worse than road cycling. Thanks for the PD for Scott.

AFM - I brought Scott home yesterday, he overdid it a bit with stops at DMV for Handicapped Parking Placard for the car and WalMart for scripts, but he is feeling OK this morning. It is supposed to snow here today, hopefully will get dogs for walk before it starts.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Good Morning Team!

Scott is doing great, yesterday went well. We both got much needed sleep last night.

I did get dogs for a walk, we did not get as much snow as predicted, about 1/2 inch now, but supposed to snow throughout the day, but only 1 inch at most accumulation. NO WIND at the moment - usually when I say "no wind" it means wind is under 10mph, but this morning the wind speed was 0!!!!!

Pixie Dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hi team! The weekend is almost here! Anyone have plans? Anyone watching the Oscars? For me it's a toss up between the Oscars and The Walking Dead :) I'm almost done watching all the best pic nominees - I just have Les Miserables and Amour left.

Lynn - LOL on the the no wind comment! I feel like we've been getting our fair share over here. It does make it hard to run for sure! Lots of pixiedust: for Scott! How long is his recovery is expected to take?

Kipp - I vaguely remember you mentioning a bike accident in January. Yikes! What happened? A lot of the bike riders I know are about my height +/- 2 inches. Do you have any bike swaps or bike stores that sell used bikes that you can hit up? The balance exercises if done regularly will really help to strengthen your ankles, legs, glutes and core. I like that they take practically no time :) I like the cat/camel stretch for my back.

AFM - I went out for a 3 miler last night and it was seriously windy. The first half of my run is out on a major road with little shelter and up an incline. The wind blowing into you definitely makes it a tougher run. There was also a lot of ice so I went slower because of that. I didn't want to take a tumble or mess up my ankles again. I managed 3 miles in 31 minutes. This weekend, I'm hoping to get out for a 6 and 3 miler. I might end up doing the 3 on Friday so that I can go to the gym on Friday.

How is everyone doing with their healthy eating and exercises? Don't forget tomorrow is Friday so we're weighing in. Post your weight loss and your points so I can get them recorded :)

Have a great day everyone!
