For 2,000+ Mile Round-Trip Drivers Only! (III)

Need some sound advice from those well traveled.

We've driven several times before but it was always for a stay of at least 6 nights. Our original plan this time was for a 6-night stay but may have to cut it short one night. Do you think it's crazy to drive 2200 miles R/T for 5 nights in Disney? It just doesn't seem long enough.

Thanks!

Well, we are planning a 2600 mile R/T for 4 nights. Yes, it is short, but not crazy (Or we are crazier!)

Reading these posts has made me feel so much better about our upcoming trip. We are driving from Minneapolis to wdw for spring break..... And I hate to drive. :( Airfare is just too much for us though, it would put the trip out of reach. So... I am focusing on the positive ($, having room to pack food and extras, having a car so we can easily get to HP world too, etc). Hopefully it will also turn out to be a fun adventure!

Not even a question for me - I say go for it :thumbsup2

[official sounding drum roll]

A four-night stay has been determined several years ago on this thread as the time frame that allows veteran WDW travelers to either drive the 2,000+ mile round-trip journey or fly without feeling guilty about their status as members of this marathon-drivers DISboards group.

The number of days driving should never be equal to or greater than the number of nights spent at WDW. :teacher:

And that drive home will seem particularly long after short a relatively short stay.

The creator of this thread even flew to WDW for a four-night stay last August.

[end of official sounding drum roll]

All the best. :thumbsup2

I know this is somewhere in this thread but I just can't read it all.

We are driving from MA.

What are the other routes besides I-95?

Is stopping in NC probably the best place/ halfway point to stop for the night?

We've never driven all the way to WDW. We have drove as far as Charleston SC though. I'm pretty sure we only drove I 95 that time.

Thanks for your help. We are leaving next week. :)

I'm reposting this- hoping it got missed. :)

We are in nh. Generally we go 91 to 84 to the ny thruway. Cut down to the garden state in nj and cut over to 95. Then 95 the whole way. This way we avoid nyc traffic.

Once due to traffic jams from west springfield to nyc we took the mass pike to the ny thruway and then south.

During the warmer months we have also gone 84 out to pa. I always forget the route numbers. Its a nice drive and then we cut back towards 95 around dc.

As for where to stop it totally depends on you. I have made it alone all the way to md for the night. Mostly we leave at dinner time and drive through to ga the next day. Spend the night and then the last few hours in the morning ready to hit the parks for lunch.

Another alternate:

I-84 west thru Connecticut, New York and into Pennsylvania.

At Scranton, Pa hop onto I-81 south thru Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, and into Tennessee.

Once in Tennessee, get onto I-26 east thru Tennessee, North Carolina, and into South Carolina.

East of Columbia, SC (SE actually) you will pick up I-95 just north of St. George.

We leave from PA and the route that we like is 81-77-26-95, the same route NJRRK gave you. We prefer that over 95 all the way. The only part that puts me to sleep (I'm not driving) is the 4 hrs we spend in VA on 81.

Thanks for the advice about the drive/shorter stay.

Well, we decided to cut our Disney stay short one night (now 5 nights) so we can stay at SSR and we are stopping at Savannah on the way home for a night. Breaks up the drive home, if just a bit. We never drive straight through anyway so this will be our overnighter.

We used to drive a lot when I was a kid vs. flying and NC was usually our stopping point, sometimes VA, on the way home. Generally, though, we would leave the the afternoon/ evening and drive straight through.

As far as the route, I think it depends on where in MA you are coming from. We are all the way on the east coast of MA, so we do start out on 95 through MA, RI and CT.
When I drove in April, I got a trip tik from AAA and it suggested 95 most of the way - except for:
around NY city
through NJ
around DC

Thanks we're from SE MA so we will be doing 95 at first then around NYC via Tappen zee. I think it was after that I have questions about. I have lots of good suggestions so far.

It's almost 9:20 on a Sunday morning. Relatively early as the sun starts its climb in the sky. It's 11-degrees here at the Jersey Shore and 61-degrees at Disney World. Ah, to be driving right now on World Drive.

All the best. :thumbsup2
