Oh, I know these days!!! I have started to develop a few strategies to deal with evenings like this, they don't always work for me, but at least I do feel less bad afterwards because I at least tried.
The first is: first thing when you get home, get a largish carrot out of the fridge, peel it and eat it. It isn't absolutely calorie free, but my theory is that the sugar in the carrot (after all it is slightly sweet) helps with the carb craving. I also get a large one and don't cut it up because then it is actually more work eating it. Munching on it prevents me from eating something else.
This is a WONDERFUL idea!!
Second, also think how well you have been drinking during the day. I am usually someone who drinks a lot, 2 litres are never a challenge for me. But recently I figured out that my carb cravings are worse on days when I did not
drink enough.
They say that thirst often disguises itself as hunger.
Third: It takes time until the carbs you ate are signalled to the brain. For me it takes about 30 minutes. Therefore when I start eating I set the kitchen timer on 30 minutes and I am not allowed back into the kitchen before the timer goes off. Mostly I am very disappointed when I finish eating that I did have such a small portion. But by the time the timer goes off, I realize that I am indeed full.
However, then there are days when none of this works. Then the only thing that helps is that if the evening went wrong, to just make sure that the next day goes better again.
Hope this helps a little!
Lots of wonderful advise for everyone here!!
Yes, I did!!
5.5 km. I am still loving my new shoes -
they make me want to go for a run every day...
Wow! Are they magic shoes? I could use some of that!!
I spent my whole time on the elliptical yesterday thinking of names for the kitty. I finally came up with Maui because it is the prettiest Hawaiian island and I had given up on thinking of cold weather names. Then thought of Dinah--Alice's cat in Alice in wonderland. Came home and son had already named her-- Misty. Perfect. We've had, along with the freezing temp's a blanket of fog over us the last few weeks.
As far as kitty's being lucky to find us-- yeah-- we treasure them, but really I feel very lucky to have found her--she is just a doll. How anyone could just abandon this gorgeous sweet girl in temp's of the 20's is just barbaric to me. I looked up posts on craigs list to see if they even tried to home her and couldn't find a thing. A neighbor said they had come back several times to get their things but didn't take her. She'd have starved but someone put some dog food out for her.Things are going pretty well-- I cracked the door today to let them all sniff each other for awhile--actually tried something I hadn't before--tied a string to the doorknob and tied the other end to a drawer in the hall so it left the door just open enough. I also put bowls of tuna on each side of the door so they'd associate each other with food.
Will get pictures soon-- I forget I got a new camera for xmas!
Have a great day.
Great name for the kitty! Can't wait to see a picture. Nice to start letting them get to know each other.
Hello all! I just wanted to pop in for a minute to say hi. I've been missing the last few days. My feeling rundown on Saturday turned into getting full on sick on Sunday. I spent Sunday & Monday in bed and on the couch. Luckily we had a 2 hour delay yesterday and today so I got some extra rest. I feel much better today, so I need to pack! It was supposed to be done on Sunday, but I just couldn't do anything. So, I need to pack tonight so we can leave for wdw on Friday. DH has graduation tomorrow, so I won't have much time tomorrow afternoon to do much. I'm hoping to check in while I am in Florida but I won't be able to weigh in. So, have good weigh ins and stay warm! ttyl
Jill
Oh my, my, my! I'm sorry you've been sick..... but at least you've built up some immunity to the stuff going around and won't catch anything on the plane!
Congratulations to your DH (and to you)! I'm sure that there are days when it felt like he would NEVER finish school. But on to a better future now, right??
Not doing as well as I had hoped I would be. My weight is bouncing around daily by about 2 pounds which is really not normal for me, but on my official weigh day each week it has been the same higher number. I am frustrated, but with myself for not doing the things that I know I HAVE to in order to keep that number down.
Keep on keeping on! The scale will eventually go down and stay down!
Success? Eating much more healthy. Planning meals and be sure to have on plan choices around at all times.
Struggles? Avoiding the "treats"-- the candy, the crackers, the things I know I shouldn't have on a regular basis. No one to blame but me.
And exercise. I want to walk. I actually do kind of like walking at a good pace with my Ipod turned up so loud it drowns out everything else. But it isn't looking good for being able to do that regularly. Walked 2 days in a row and my feet are absolutely not happy-- in the heels and the ball of the foot. I thought that it was something just rubbing wrong on the ball of foot and put moleskin on and changed shoes to give it time to rest but after messing with it tonight it is a deep pain to the bone, not just irritated skin. I am afraid that I have also lost fat pad there (which is very possible) and that is not something that can "heal". I bought some new inserts today to try and see if they can help. I can limping pretty bad today.
Makes the Fitbit less fun if I can't move much during the day. Feeling a little bit sorry for myself tonight. I try not to let my foot issues affect me too much or get me down but I am very frustrated today.
I think you need to look into some new exercise that won't aggravate the feet! You NEED your feet to be in good working order for daily life and getting them stressed during exercise will just make other parts of life more difficult. How about yoga? Or swimming? I know you've said before that your DD was a swimmer. Water aerobics or water Zumba (our Y is offering that now)? How about some sort of circuit training that won't put so much pressure on the feet.... not that I can think of any for now.
And now tonight, I am hungry.
Dinner sucked (don't ask) and I waited too long to eat it so I was starving. If I let myself get like that it is hard to fell full. I should have had a small snack. On the positive side I had logged everything into MFP and it said I was OVER in every category after dinner so no option for snack. BUT I went back a few mins ago and realized I added dinner 2x! So I do have a little wiggle room left. Going to make some Diet Hot Chocolate and melt a cheese stick (or two. . .).
Sorry dinner sucked. I am a terrible cook, so I end up with some sort of dinner disaster/failure about every 10 days. Usually I tell the family to suck it up and eat.... but there have been a few times where the entire meal ended up in the garbage.
I was really hungry when I got home last night as well, but started my meal with a HUGE serving of steamed broccoli and I was amazed at how well that took the "edge" off of my hunger and I didn't end up gobbling up too many pierogies!! I had planned to eat 5 and I ate 5! They were a carbohydrate splurge, but DH was gone and we try to enjoy our carbs when he gone! Hadn't had pierogies in ages and DD was begging for them. I served them with some nice sauteed onions/pepper/mushrooms.
Being over-hungry makes it nearly impossible to make good choices!! But glad you found some wiggle room for a treat. I went over by 1 point yesterday, but that point was in the form of a grapefruit, so no worries, right??
School tomorrow and then a 4 day weekend!
Don't know what we are doing yet but hopefully it will all be indoors because it is still
here!
Gonna go get that snack and try to get to bed early.
Why do you have a 4 day weekend?? I'm jealous!

I love this Pam! Thanks for sharing.
You are welcome!
I had a bad eating night tonight. I went to Jazzercise right after school and put a meatloaf in the oven. When I got home, my husband was finishing up with the mashed potatoes and roasted carrots ... but he opened a bottle of wine. So ... I drank all my Jazzercise calories. I think he is trying to sabotage me!
I don't even keep wine in the house any more, except for Christmas. I didn't love it so much that it was worth the extra calories. Hopefully you enjoyed the treat!
That sounds like a lot of fun. When we were at Disney a few years ago, we we were in a flash mob for the taping of the parade for the Jonas brothers. It was A LOT of fun! Let us know how it went.
WOW! Love to see video of that!!
50sJayne- Got lucky and my DSIL gave me her treadmill as she has been using an elliptical that's smaller.
Got in 2.75 miles this morning in about 50 minutes. Walked the whole thing. I'm hoping to do a 5K tomorrow with a combo of walking and running again. Going to alternate for awhile and have days of just walking.
Work has been slow this week so I'm trying to amp up my exercise. Nobody scheduled tomorrow but I'm on call and can be there in 10 minutes. I'm a licensed massage therapist for those who don't know me. I have 2 people on Friday and two on Saturday. A bit busier next week.
Trying to post once a day so I can get back in the habit.
Great job everyone!!!!!
Nice to see you back on track! Sorry that work is slow.
Thanks! This is my 3rd go round on the WISH boards.
I have to say that my dh having a heart attack & bypass surgery is some real hard core motivation.
Following a "diet" plan with regards to tracking "sat fat" & cholesterol is easier in some ways because it is simple to pick up a package and see how much sat fat is in something. The number you can have per day is low, so you really have to spend those "sat fat points", well.
So far I spend mine on cheese & meat in my breakfast, lunch, and dinner which means that I cannot "cheat" and have a treat because it would send my sat fat numbers too high. My snacks have to be fruit and veggies.
That is my "system" so far. I think I am going to go after sugar grams next. I will bet I can cut some more calories while boosting nutrition.
I am slowly changing things although talking to my dh I am making TOO MANY CHANGES! That is what he said right after surgery (I am telling you it was the wheat bread that sent him over the edge). Now he will actually ask what the sat fat grams are in something. There is hope.
He saw the surgeon today, all is well. He can drive and lift 30lbs. I already had him do a project today & hung up a dry erase board in the kitchen. (I am also trying to organize the household but that would be a whole other forum.
)
Also good that we had a cardiac surgeon who sat there and tells us not to eat ANY fast food today. That is certainly motivating.
I'm sure you didn't NEED that surgeon to say "no fast food" but it is always good to have back-up!
WOOHOO on organizing! If you want some additional motivation, there is a thread on the Budget Board that BAMB and I both subscribe to.... I believe it is entitled "Destash 2013" or something like that.
I have to be honest, as "healthy" as I try to eat, I almost NEVER, EVER notice the specific amount of sat fat in the things I eat.... although I am a diligent label reader. I mostly just make mental note of "total fat" and if it seems to high to me, I skip that item. What kinds of places might I find sat fat "hiding" that I wouldn't suspect???
It's 10:45pm my time and I just got home about 20 minutes ago. I am exhausted!!
There is a video, I just don't know if I can share it yet. This meeting was our 2013 Kick Off Meeting so there was a lot of confidential info shared. I'm hoping they post in a way that I can just capture the flash mob portion to share!
We can't wait to see it, whenever you can post!
QUESTION OF THE DAY - THURSDAY, JANUARY 24TH:
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE/MOST INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE THAT EITHER KEEPS YOU OR GETS YOU BACK ON TRACK?
Well.... I shared my newest best "personal" quote yesterday, so let me search the brain for a minute....
"Everything you need is already inside you." It is from a Nike ad.... not sure who to contribute it to.
Last summer, when DD was feeling like she needed some extra motivation for senior year of swim, she created herself this huge motivation board. She found lots of great motivational sayings online (Pinterest and such), printed them up and had me help her mount them on a big posterboard. It came out great and sits in her room. I hope she still finds inspiration in it. I know I do!
I'll post a photo of it later.
I have several quotes that I like but one of my favorites is
"It's kind of fun to do the impossible!" Walt Disney.
That is a great one!
I'm still looking for a couple of coaching volunteers for the February thread.
2/1-2/7
2/8-2/14 Flossbolna
2/15-2/21 jillbur (Jill)
2/22-2/28
Thanks!
I would be happy to do either of the empty weeks. Just let me know here or PM me if you want me to put it on my calendar!

Happy sunny FRIGID Thursday! A straight ZERO here this morning. I know it's been colder, but man that is just frosty! I had concerns that the car might not start and with DH gone, the kids would have had a cold walk to catch the bus for mid-terms!!! Thankfully it started on the first try.
DD has her hardest mid-term going on right now.... AP Biology. She is SUPER stressed about it... praying that it goes well, since she is going to college to be a biologist!! Tomorrow's exam for her is calculus, which she is struggling a bit with this year (first time EVER struggling with any kind of math), but I'm sure she'll pull through.
DS has THREE mid-terms today. I am not concerned about Honor Geometry or even really Science.... but I have grave concerns about World Cultures!
He really struggles with both that and English and I'm not sure he really put enough effort into the studying. Time will tell I suppose. I will continue to pray for him throughout the day.... prayers and PD always welcome for both kids, of course!
After DD's exam I am picking her up to head to the local Y (where she used to swim) so we can both get in a workout. It is too much to do the hour drive each way to her regular pool during this exam week, but she doesn't want to miss too many workouts. After that we will grab a quick lunch together and then head home for more studying. I begged off work for today so that we could make this schedule work. School wasn't 'happy with me, but oh well.
I made a good dent in my web-based training for my new job yesterday, completing about 2 hours worth. I want to try to bang out at least one more session today. I can't sign up for my "real" in-person training until I am done with these and the in-person training has to be signed up for 3 weeks in advance. If I sign up for an in-person session, I need to be SURE that I will be finished with the web-based stuff by then. Plus I need to check the swim schedule and DH's schedule, as it looks like I will have to travel for that training. Also have robotics competition coming up in about 5 weeks... can't miss that!
Need to leave here in 45 minutes to pick up DD and have to get my gym bag packed up and finish picking up around the house.... plus there are two loads of laundry to fold! Guess I need to get moving here!
Hope everyone is well and staying warm today!
Here is one more "tidbit" from my current Bible study.....
It is something I wrote inside the cover of my book. I'm sure it is a paraphrase of something I must have read/heard in this study.
"When I don't deprive myself of treats, I do deprive myself of the life I really want (and of the life God really wants for me)."
Feel free to ignore the part in parentheses if it doesn't mesh with your belief system. And I italisied "treats" because that can mean many different things to many people. For some of us it is sugar.... for others fat.... for others it might be booze. Feel free to insert whatever word you want there to make this apply to yourself.........................P
