Carrying over points

Question: let's say you have a contract for 100 pts. You bank those 100 pts and the next UY you have 200 pts. If I stay 7 nights and costs me 107 pts, what happens to the 93 pts I don't use? Will they just carry over? Do I have to also bank them before next UY? Or will they carry over and I'll have a total of 193 pts that I could bank for the next trip?

Every year there is a banking deadline, it is 8 months into the UY. No points will ever "automatically" carry over. You may bank points for 1 year only, after that next year, if they are unused they will expire.

Sent from my iPad using DISBoards App, please excuse any typos or autocorrects!

So the 93 points I don't use, I'll lose them if I don't bank them?

Yes.

If you have 100 points in your contract (let's assume a June Use Year) and banked 100 points from your 2011 Use Year - you then used 107 points for a trip in December, 2012- you now have 93 points available for use before May 31, 2013. MS will normally use banked points first for any reservations (it is up to the member to make sure that is done) so you used the 100 points banked from 2011 and you now have 93 points from the current (2012) Use Year. You have until January 31, 2013 (the end of the 8th month of the Use Year) to bank those 93 points or you will lose them if not used for another reservation by May 31, 2013.

On June 1, 2013 you will have another 100 points available for use before May 31, 2014 or bank by January 31, 2013.

So on June 1, 2013, I'll have a total of 193 pts available after banking my 93 pts from the previous year. Is this correct? If so, then I could borrow pts from the next year if I want to....

Yes, you've got it! :)

You could borrow from the 2014 Use Year and have up to 293 points for a trip between 6/1/13 and 5/31/14.

Pay close attention to the wording here. MS is supposed to automatically use banked points first. If they do, it helps ensure that banked points don't go unused, and also that maximum current year points remain available for banking. That's what should happen automatically.

However, "Pobody is Nerfect." I've always found MS very conscientious, but it is the owner's responsibility to make sure the points are used as you wish. That responsibility is especially important if you have multiple contracts, multiple resorts, multiple UY's, etc.

One of the best pieces of advice I've ever received on these boards is to take a few minutes at the end of any transaction with MS and go over every minute detail of the transaction so that you clearly understand exactly where every point came from, and went. That little piece of advice has enabled me to catch mistakes on several occasions.

Can you fix mistakes later? Of course you can. But it is SO much simpler to do it at the time of the transaction.

Just to clairify, points use is based on the date of stay, not the calendar date. So you could borrow 2014 points now for a stay 6/1/13 or after.

Do you do this with member services or on your own, online?

If you call MS, they should (or you should ask) that they go over the points in your contract(s). If online, you should also get an accounting in real time. After calling MS, I would also suggest logging in to make sure your transaction is reflected in the online account as you expect.

I just booked my first 2 reservations online (for this weekend!) and it was pretty simple. They give you an example of what should happen (there's even a little video to show it). The idea is that banked points are used first, then borrowed (I believe), then current use year. Holding points will only be used if the stay is within their rules (for a stay within 60 days).

After you choose your room, it takes you through a few steps and asks you to confirm. On the confirmation page, the accounting sheet is shown, and you can undo the transaction if the points used weren't uses as you would like.
