No Buy ~ January 2013 edition

I understand... totally.

Like we explained to our kids..
Our gifts are your education, party, your Disney World graduation trip, and that we will continued to help pay for you to get your first degree (4 years and we help and encourage summer school to get out in 4 years)..anything over and above is on them or we can discuss...

We have things we ask of them to meet (kind of like requirements) and thus far the kids have all exceed them.. even when they really didn't want too... To be an athlete you have to have X GPA... we expect something even higher to play sports... the other one is just too low....

Each family is different and really must do what is in the best interest of their family and no one should tell another family how it should work.. JMHO...

ETA: isn't it amazing how parents can come up with money when it doesn't look available.. Do it here all the time!!! ;)

We've already paid all the senior year graduation expenses--cap & gown, announcements, etc. (those fees were due the beginning of October). Rachel's fees were less than Sarah's last year because we ordered fewer announcements and are using Sarah's cap & gown, but it was still over $200!

Housing deposits for fall 2013 have been paid--$200 for Rachel; $50 for Sarah

We will be paying for 5 AP tests very soon.

Sarah's graduation gift was her trip to NYC to sing at Carnegie Hall and Rachel has chosen WDW in May.

Our 2013 housing application/fees are done for PJ...
DsS21 rents a house..so he is on his own...

We are pretty lucky.. I only send "official" announcements out to 10 ppl.. others get homemade ones/photocards... so our cap/gown and invitations cost us $50.00... so I already have that ready to go for next year..

We haven't paid the housing deposit yet, as he still isn't sure where he will be going. He has it narrowed down to one state school and one private school. Will totally depend on how much money he receives. Until we get that info set in stone we can't make a decision. Wish our stupid w-2 and other tax info would get here so we can get movin! I did ours by our paychecks, but have to wait now for the IRS link?

I would prefer the state school, but I hear they aren't as flexible when it comes to additional money for students. The private school seems much more agreeable to give him "extra", but at $42,000 a year they should be! I don't know how you all handled it, but the scenario runs through my brain several times and day and I wish it was just over and the decision made. I need things set in stone.....I can't just fly by the seat of my pants. I'm starting to feel mental!

Graduation announcements were $80 (and I only ordered 25), and cap and gown $30. I planned to make up photo cards for invites to the party.

I haven't been to a graduation party since my youngest sister graduated. What do people do for them?

I think if I remember correctly... we used the IRS tool to pull in our information in Feb.. I think we did it after we received our refunds... it didn't take long and then they send that information to the schools and you get your TRUE amounts... the first amounts you get are "prelim" amounts... ours were pretty close.. we lost one but it was a state one.. so it wasn't a big deal to us... our other two were the same.. the ones we wanted...

I heard on the news last night w/ the crazy fiscal cliff stuff that IRS would be a go by Jan 30th.. I wrote it down because we always try to file by the first weekend in Feb.. I have my tax stuff ready to go..

As for the parties.. last year.. we made a taco bar, drinks, snacks.. and set up the backyard w/ chairs.. everyone just came and went as they pleased. The kids all try to hit one anothers parties but at lot of us had the parties at the same time.. We had her cake too... I think we didn't eat tacos for like 4 months after the party though! LOL

Next graduation party is gonna be catered... maybe subway..

I pulled PJ's stuff.. her cap/gown was 47... and I ordered 10 announemcents at 10.00... so 57 was what I paid..
the name plates that you insert in the cards, I did not order.. I instead made 2x3 photos and included her name on them... They looked great and those who got the announcements said they loved them... We did also include 3x4 wallet senior photos in with those announcements.

Forgot to add that I'm doing the weekly savings account, but, I'm starting with $52 and working backwards because I want extra spending money for WDW with Rachel in May :)

So far this week I spent $20 taking Rachel to lunch yesterday. Today I'm heading to M's for a couple items for the EPCOT swap and I'll pay $25 for Rachel's voice lesson and $10 for allergy shots (all in the budget).

wow, think I need to start saving for Megan's senior year after reading all of the above :scared1: and she's only in 7th grade

Guess it's a good thing DS16 will graduate with 21 college credits and all tolled it will cost me $250.
He's also decided to go to community college for a year or two because Johnson and Wales is $25,000 a year just for tuition.

Yes Lisa, start a 529 now!!!!

DS16 will graduate with 21 credits too.. he has more than DD because I made him start them earlier in hopes that we can talk him in to being done in December and he can start some college courses 2nd semester and have more college credits for his first year on campus... The school is out of things to offer him... :(

DD graduated with 18 credits...

I had to drop $19.84 at walmart.. tri-fold board for DS12's "ancient Rome" project... of which it's a partner group and the one kid has already told the other two he is copying something off the web... UH, NO you are not and taking my kids grade down a level.. I emailed the teacher in regards to this and told her. I prefer nip that in the bud or DS12 will be doing this project solo (which is what I prefer anyway).... and I need a some bottled water for the boys' lunches.

I actually am doing the 52 week savings plan.. I started a spreadsheet and I think I'm going to work as planned til March.. then when the tax check comes in I'm going to pull the 52 and start working backward from there....

Wait, you went from a posterboard to a tri-fold??

And yeah, I agree, no group projects in this house unless your kids are partners with my kids!!

I am not looking forward to graduation.
