Is a lanyard a good thing to have?

I have never been cruising before, but it seems like I will be spending a lot of time in my swimsuit and no wallet is needed. Is it a good idea/necessity to have a lanyard to carry your room card?

I was thinking about purchasing some from the Disney store, 25% off with current promotion, but I do not want to drop $30 on four of them for all of us. If they are a good idea to have, do the kids need one too, or just some for us adults?:confused3

Or is there something better out there?

Before our cruise, I would have scoffed at a lanyard but we bought three the first or second night and found them to be lifesavers! DS was 7 so didn't always keep his KTTW card in it but it was so convenient especially as a woman who doesn't often have pockets!

I put buying them off until the last minute because I really didn't think I would use it. I am SO happy I ended up buying them. All of us except the 5 year old used them. I love that I never had to carry a purse or anything. I would put my card and id in the lanyard and my camera in my pocket. No worry about losing anything.

You can buy lanyards at places like WalMart or 99 cent stores pretty cheap. Usually around $1.

If you're only carrying your KTTW card, I will point out, it can get wet. It's just plastic, like a credit card. DH keeps his in his swim trunks pocket when using the pools/beach. And put mine in a place that only DH has access to :rolleyes1.

:cutie:

My family got them for free cause were castaway club members (cruise more than once with Disney) but regardless I think they help a lot. Disney sells some with a mini wallet attached which is cool for Id and money at ports.

I would be lost without it! I'm much better at remembering to take my KTTW card with me when it's on a lanyard, and it helps me from misplacing it.

Sayhello

Lanyards are good for Women and Children. What with our having limited to no pockets and kids putting things down and walking away without them. I bought the 2 of us the DCL lanyards from the site, on sale like you speak of. I am glad we got them. They are good quality and it was handy to have a wallet at the end, when we went into port I stuck money, credit card, passport card, etc in there. You can wear it under your shirt for more protection of your belongings and for photos. DH used his as well. I think my DH could take or leave his, though.

I am thinking of picking up small caribiner clips so we can clip them to our shorts to make photos look a little better.

I wear one almost all the time on the ship. If they were a "bad" thing to have, I don't think DCL would give them to returning cruisers.

But--Walmart and similar outlets sell them for $1-2. You don't have to pay $8 on the ship to get one.

So they are big enough to fit other things in them other than the KTTW card? I am worried I cannot fit much cash or id's in them as well.

You can fit and ID as well as a little cash however you do not need any cash on the ship. If you are DVC members they give laynards as well. I use mine all the entire cruise. DH finally decided to use one our last cruise and put his wallet in the safe while on the ship. He liked not having to have his wallet in his pocket. Enjoy your first cruise.

DS and I use the lanyards. DH does not, but he always has pockets. :rotfl:

I would also recommend a magnet w/ a hook for hanging them on the inside of the door or on the wall close to the door. That way they are handy and do not get lost.

I use a small wristlet. It's perfect...KTTWC, chapstick, lipgloss fit right in. :-) I got a couple of cheap ones from Express on our first 2 cruises, DH just got me a nice Coach one for my bday. :)

Tangential question from a cruise noob: how do they actually read the cards for purchases, etc.? I am wondering if it would be feasible to use a belt clip retractable card reel like they use for prox card keys or if I would end up having to remove it from the sleeve each time I got a drink.

They swipe it like a credit card. That's why we ended up not using the lanyard. It was a huge pain to get it out of the plastic sleeve.

My wife just wore jeans or handed me her card to hold for her. I held the kids' cards too.
