Considering Going Solo

I'm considering a solo trip to Disney for January 2013, 3 months from now. DH and I were at Disney in January 2011 so he's really not interested in going back yet. He would be happy going every 10 years. :(

But. We got our first ever pin code in the mail yesterday and I really hate to see it go to waste. :)

I would fly from Detroit to Orlando and take the Magical Express to/from the resort, and I would want to stay at Port Orleans Riverside (have stayed there twice before and love it!) but as a woman traveling alone I'm a bit nervous.

I would love to hear from other adult solo women. Please tell me where you stayed and what your experience was like.

I would probably stay for a week, flying down on a Sunday and going back home the following Sunday, so that I could really enjoy all of the parks and the resort.

I think it is definitely doable to take a solo Disney trip and still experience the Disney Magic.

Although I have never taken a full solo trip, I have gone on a trip where I met my in-laws there. This trip allowed me to have a considerable amount of alone time. I flew alone, took the Magical Express alone and then also experienced the parks alone on some of the nights.

Truth is, I had a great time walking through the parks at my own pace. It was nice to see how many Cast Members would say "hello" and smile at me as I passed by.

You should totally do it! I've done solo trips at POFQ (my fave resort!) and at All-Star Movies and Music. When I stayed at Movies, I completed a 4 parks in 1 day challenge and got back to the resort at 2am. Never felt uneasy walking to my room and it was located at the back of the property.

Of course, I always try to maintain awareness of my surroundings at WDW as I do anywhere I am. Don't put yourself into situations where you might be uncomfortable and you'll do just fine.

As a solo woman traveler, I feel very safe at WDW. I've always had good experiences there. I try and go solo as often as I can. I'll be there in January 2013 as well, just not solo this time.

Hi - Made my first trip solo last month, and stayed at POFQ. I had a great time and booked a bounceback trip for next year. Everyone is different, though, and thank goodness for that.

You mentioned being nervous - anything specific?? Have you traveled alone before?

I felt very safe wherever I went. Used Disney transportation, ME bus. Enjoyed a TS meal at least once a day, sometimes twice. I also had at least one very nice conversation every day, whether waiting for the bus/for a show or (briefly) with the people dining next to me. I carried a few chapters of a book in my purse to read during meals and breaks. (I never feel alone with a book ;)) A few times waiters/waitresses were very chatty with me since they weren't swamped. Two of them even sat down at my table for a few minutes, just to visit. At first I was kind of taken aback by it, but did enjoy the friendly conversation and hearing about how they came to be working at WDW.

My DH and kids texted a few times a day and talked on the phone with at least one of them daily.

I'm very comfortable being alone -- it gives my mind a chance to rest. I don't get homesick, and have traveled solo for business many times. Traveling solo for pleasure is different, though. One's time/mind are not as occupied, and it's easier to think "gee, I wish xxxxxx was here to see this." Some people are really bothered by that. Nothing wrong with it, we're just all wired differently. Some are very comfortable being alone, but not vacationing alone. If you're concerned about feeling alone and awkward, there's a good chance you just might when you're all those miles from home.

I went solo for the first time last year (November).....had a wonderful time. I arrived on Sunday and left on Saturday. On Sunday afternoon I was a little apprehensive about being there alone; but that only lasted until I got to DHS and started riding and then seeing the Osborne family lights and I was in awe and had a ball. I was never afraid. I stayed at WL and loved it. I'll probably go back alone next year. :)

Thanks everyone, for the replies, and hope to hear from more who have done solo adult trips.

DakotaRose, I think the only time I would be nervous about being alone is going back to the resort late at night. I guess I've watched too many episodes of "CSI" and "Dexter." :rotfl:

I have not done much traveling alone. I have driven alone about 6 hours (across the Mackinaw Bridge and into the upper peninsula a ways) to meet up with others for a vacation, and I've stayed one night alone in a Bed & Breakfast but that's pretty much the extent of it.

I'm home alone, though, a few times during the year when DH travels for work. I am an only child so grew up being able to entertain myself and enjoy my own company, so I'm not worried about that part.

I don't mind eating alone, and I would just basically eat at the food court, and maybe counter service in the parks, and grab a few snacks from the food court for in the room, etc. I eat alone sometimes in restaurants at home so that wouldn't bother me either.

I just know that DH won't want to go back to Disney since we were "just there" two years ago. :rotfl: He's not as into Disney as I am.

I did a week-long trip there with my Mom a few years ago, and while that was fun she paid for the trip so she expected me to do what she wanted to all the time. I was barely allowed to go to the food court in the morning (when it was still dark) to get my coffee. :) She is a big worrier. We didn't spend many evenings in the parks because she was tired, and wouldn't let me stay alone, even though I was a grown adult. I suppose I could have put my foot down and said I was going to do it anyway, but since she asked me to go with her and paid for the entire trip I didn't feel that I could.

So, I just think it would be fun to go solo and do whatever I wanted to, and not have to worry about what my traveling companion wanted to do. :) I could ride my favorite rides over and over if I wanted to, just walk around, sit and people watch, etc. and only have me, myself and I to worry about.

I'm still "thinking" about it, and haven't really even talked it over with DH yet. I kind of wanted to hear the perspectives of others here who have done solo trips.

I started a thread about this same topic and got a boat load of answers. You should check it out. It was on this same board. You can check my thread history on my dis homepage. That can defintely help you.

Thanks, I will check it out. So did you end up taking a solo trip?

Adult Solo Woman here, and I totally understand the "CSI" thing. ;) I did my first solo trip to WDW this year, and it was my first solo vacation ever anywhere. It was a Big Adventure for me, and I had a fantastic time - so much so that I'm doing it again next year!

I stayed at Beach Club because I'd stayed there before and knew that I liked it. I love being able to walk back and forth to Epcot, and walked "home" from there after dark a couple of evenings and never felt uncomfortable - there were always plenty of other people out doing the same thing, as well as walking back and forth to the Boardwalk, etc.

Let me tell you, everything people say about being able to "do your own thing" solo is absolutely true! One of the nice things is when you unexpectedly come across some entertainment, and you can just stop and enjoy. I was walking through MK on my way to get some lunch, and heard from a distance the Main St Philharmonic playing in Liberty Square, followed the music and stood and watched their set, which was great. (Princess Tiana even came over from her meet & greet nearby to listen to them play "When We're Human" from her movie.)

If there are any TS restaurants you want to try, go for it. I dined solo at Via Napoli, Flying Fish and Les Chefs de France, and had great service and food at all three.

Oh, and I LOVE Magical Express! I checked my "big" bag and just took a small carryon on the plane. I got to BC around 3, got my room, and quickly headed out to Epcot. When I came back later that evening, my checked bag was waiting in my room, just as expected. It was nice to be able to check my bag at the resort on my departure morning, too. It's just neat to get on the big Disney bus and watch the Disney videos while you drive to your happy Disney destination. :goodvibes

I just went solo for the first time on Tuesday night. My experience may not be very helpful to you as it wasn't a vacation (I'm a local passholder), but I hope it encourages you to give it a try :) I NEVER thought I'd go by myself; the whole idea of going to a theme park alone was depressing to me.

I am an only child so grew up being able to entertain myself and enjoy my own company, so I'm not worried about that part.

We have this in common :) However, I am very much an extrovert and always enjoy having someone with me to talk to and experience things with.

There was a concert going on at Epcot that I really wanted to attend, though, and I couldn't get anyone to to with me. So I chose to do it solo, and I'm really glad I did! It was really nice to do what I wanted to and not need to take anyone else into account. And I met several wonderful people; I had a particularly nice conversation with a Canadian family while waiting for IllumiNations. That was during a visit of just a few hours - imagine how many people you'll get to meet (CMs and guests alike) in an entire vacation!

I had a good experience and although I still prefer to go with others, I won't hesitate to do it solo in the future when I need a fix ;) So I'd give it a shot; I bet you'll have a lot of fun! pixiedust:

I am going thru some things right now and patienly waiting to see if I can go. Crossing my fingers and target date would be early feb. The thread I started sure made up my mind. Got a lot of postive answers. Chatting with fellow solo travelers was best ideal. Almost it is my goal and hope if I do go solo to possibly be able to meet up with a few dis ppl there in the parks for fun and maybe a meal or two.

I am also an only child -- haha! You mentioned qualms about walking alone at night. After park close, I would take the bus back to the resort. It was dark, but I was not alone. There were plenty of people moving around, and many of the resort rooms near mine were occupied. I was much more alone in the early morning going to breakfast. But then there were groundskeepers around every corner and it was daylight.
Granted, I didn't stay out past 11:00. It is always a good idea to be alert to surroundings. I think if I was concerned I would head to the front desk and ask for an escort., but it was not an issue for me.
Best wishes whatever you decide!

Of all the places I have traveled solo (27/f), Disney World is certainly the easiest - at least to me! And fun! You get to do whatever you want, whenever you want. Plus you meet some of the nicest people - especially on busses.

I say go for it. :o)

I am going on my first solo trip for a weekend in December. Like you, the ONLY part of this trip that has me a tad concerned is my walk back to the resort late at night (early morning hours) after park closing. Other than that...I am soooo excited!!! Some people I tell that I'm going solo, look at me like I have 2 heads; comments like "why would you do that?!". But, they just don't get it. I have been to Disney numerous times and have loved each and every trip...I wouldn't change any of them. However, each trip, I have had someone else to "entertain". Whether it be the kids, friends, other family members; I often would give up something "I" would like to do to make sure they were happy. This time, I am going to watch parades, stop and listen to street performers, take a bike ride on the Wilderness trail and enjoy a wagon ride over at Fort Wilderness to see all the christmas decorations on the campsites. Since I'm just going for a quick weekend get-a-way, I will not be park hopping. I am purchasing a ticket to Mickey's Christmas Party for the MK and then plan on spending the rest of my alone time shopping, relaxing, eating and taking in the atmosphere I so love of all things Disney. Thank you so much for starting this thread...and go ahead and plan that trip!!

I have done some solo trips and have not only walked back to my room after the lounge closes at midnight, I have gone to the quiet pool around 3 am.

I go to Disney because I feel so safe alone.

My thoughts exactly....go for it! :)

I think that you will enjoy the time there and if your DH is happy at home then he will be relieved he didn't have to go. I know my DH is kind of bored with WDW and would prefer not to go. My only thought has been can you make TS reservations for one? And will they stick you in a corner somewhere? If you are only doing CS then it doesn't really matter. I have never gone solo, because I can't justify the cost for only me. But have a blast and tell us all about your trip. :wizard:

I've been on two partially solo trips, and one fully solo trip, and will absolutely do it again in the future.

I did have a few "aw, I wish _____ was here to see this" moments, but they didn't make me have a bad time.

I never felt unsafe, regardless of where I stayed. I'm always very alert when I'm alone because I'm alone a lot at home; I feel like as long as you're aware of your surroundings at night, you're safe at Disney. There's always SOMEONE walking around, and always someone to talk to.

I've loved my solo time! My trip report in my signature ("Uno Mas!") is my January fully-solo trip staying at AKL. I had a great time. My "we'll do it live" TR will have a few days solo as well, but I haven't gotten to it yet.

My only thought has been can you make TS reservations for one? And will they stick you in a corner somewhere?

I've seen some people say that they had trouble making ADRs online for 1, but I had no problems doing it for this year's trip or my next one. And I never got stuck in a corner. :) At all 3 from this year's trip, I was seated at a 2-top by a window. CMs/servers were all nice and took great care of me.

PLEASE do it.

While I am not a single woman, I frequently travel down to Disney with my mother. She is in her mid-70s, and we both are loners at heart. We stay in separate hotel rooms and only get together for meals. So, she pretty much tours Disney on her own. She feels completely safe and always has a blast!

So I say, go for it. We all live only once, and I for one have some regrets on things I could have done at the time... but passed. If you have the time and the means you should absolutely visit Disney alone!

Have fun, do what you want when you want, and take time sitting (on a balcony sipping a drink) (or simply sitting in a park people-watching) to contemplate life and this (frequently) crazy world. :)
