Just Got Back from the Fantasy had a Rocking last night.. Wished to detail what I saw for the record..
First.. Hats off to all the Disney Fantasy Officers & crew they cleaned up a heck of a mess and brought us all home safely: Mucho thanks to all you fine people.
Sailed with DW (getting up there, but more lovely then last year), DD (14), DFIL (Up there), DMIL (Up there but not as much) and myself (52). Our rooms were on the 6th floor near the Forward elevators. We have been on 13 Disney cruises and 2 other cruises.
My times are guesses, to be honest I was not trying to document anything, I was just trying to find out if the ship was in trouble and I needed to get my party ready to evacuate the ship..
About 10 pm the ship was really rocking, I went upstairs to the Pizza station and it was very hard to walk across the deck. The water was flying out of the adult pool when the wind would catch the pools waves. Noticed about 10 or so CM up there having a hamburger.. I sat by them to see their demeanor,, These guys were professional but joked with each other, they were sending texts. Now they were not speaking the Kings English so I had no idea what they were talking about. But I could see in their faces they were not worried. There were a few passengers on the deck but mostly fellow Pizza and Hamburger fans.
At 11:00 to 12 midnight the ship was bouncing more then I have ever seen or felt. As if the ships motion was not enough. The noises were loud and wild.. There were huge cracking and pounding sounds. During this time I looked out our Veranda door. And I swear to you it looked like the waves were above the ship. I dressed and ran down to Midship deck 3 and looked out those windows and saw that the waves were in fact below the ship. So In sober reflection on the drive home, I guess what I saw out the Veranda door was the ship listing towards the water and giving the illusion that the water was above the ship.
I took this time to walk around the ship to again see how the crew was reacting. There were a few people with pillows down in the main lobby, as well as a few people going up to the lady at the guest services windows with the guest services lady reassuring them that the ship is in no danger and they have sailed through things like this before and the ship was safe. Now I do not doubt what was said, But I wanted to make sure myself that the ship was OK. I walked through deck 3 and 4. There were not a lot of guests up, but there were a fair number of crew and officers. Some hurried about their duties, others were talking to each other and dropping a joke or two. But no one ever showed any fear, dire concern or fright. They all looked like they knew what they were doing and going about their business. In the shops at this time there were a couple items on the floor with 2 guys in the liquor shop placing bottles into baskets and placing the baskets on the floor.
Also went down to Deck 1 in the public spaces by the 3 elevators that provides you a great view into the crews areas when people would open the doors. Again I saw no one in there acting like there was an impending disaster and were acting like all was safe. I guess I was looking to see if there was any emergency preparations taking place. I saw just normal activity. Went back upstairs to my room. Went around deck 5, 6 and 9. You could see that the luggage removal had stopped. In the crew elevator area, there were suitcases all tossed about. In the hallways there was luggage all strewn about so I had to step over many piles of suitcases in parts of the hallway.
Made it back to my room and reassured everyone that it did look like things were OK.
Now as if the ships movements were not enough they were actually getting worst and the noises were louder. Items were now sliding off the rooms desk. The captain had come over the loud speaker & said that all was safe. Decided to do another look around. By now a lot more items were on the floor in the shops. I went down to the 1st floor again to look at what was going on in the crews area, all looked fine, but I did see an officer briskly walk into the area, and on another check I started seeing about a dozen or so crew members dressed in sweat cloths started heading up the stairs. I followed them at a discreet distance and saw that they went up to the shops and started to take things off the shelves. Went down through the europa bar area and saw chairs laying down on the floor, and all the stools in the tube bar were heaped and strewn all over the floor.
Now things got scary for me as the ship took several big bumps and groans. The ship was rocking even more. I stopped using the elevators because they were making so much noise as you rode them. I was coming down the forward stairs to deck three and there was a young girl walking up crying, I walked into the shop area and the the crew members who were working in the shops were all gathered together in the large hall several holding each other and a couple crying. Everyone looked visibly shaken. I went to the ship phone and called DW that it may be nothing but to get everyone dressed, shoes on get the life preservers out and ready. Now I went back to the shops and they looked leveled (Like what some of the photos that have been posted show). Shelves were on the deck. A cruise passenger told me that the shelving units fell down and almost hit one of the Crew members working in the shop. Well once again I went around looking to make sure there was not other troubles. Again I found lots of crew members out and about their tasks no visible distress except about the shop areas. Thanks all that is holy that no one was hurt.
At this point I have to say where as it was bumpy, things started to back off a little, I do not know if the storm was abating, the ship altered course, the ship slowed down or what but the big violent rocking motions started to reduce and lessen. My guess this was about 2:00 - 2:30 am. but I will not swear to that.
I went back up to the room and turned on the TV and turned to the bridge report channel to see what direction the ship was heading and if were were changing direction. That channel was showing the ship in about a 350 some degree course and traveling about 9 to 10 knots. The wind was going over the port bow between 50 to 60 plus knots. Now I do not know how accurate this was but this is what was being shown. I fell asleep for about 30 mins and when I woke up the channel was showing about the same ship information. We had moved further north but things were getting better on the ship. I made another quick look on deck 3, 2 and 1 and all was like before. I did see that the detective desk on deck 2 outside enchanted gardens was laying upside down and in the middle of the hall.
I went back to the room and woke up about 7:00 with FIL calling us and wanting to know when we were wanting to go to breakfast. ( I think in an earlier life he must have been a marine corp drill Sergeant ha ha ha )
By the way everything was looking a lot better outside, the crew members looked tired and frazzled but they greeted us with warm smiles at breakfast.
After breakfast, we stayed in the room because over the loud speaker they asked people to stay out of the public areas. The middle lobby was packed with people wanting to be the first off the ship.
When they started to announce that people could start leaving the ship, we moved down to the Buena Vista Theater to give our poor room Steward a chance to get into the room to clean it. This was about 11:00 or so.
The Buena Vista was great place to stay till the crowds thinned out in the main lobby. Only a few people in it and easy to run down and see when things were clearing out.
Now in the theater we did notice that one of the large wood 3d eyeglass carts had broke fee and damaged the upper most chair floor brace, hurt 2 of the seat arm rests as it tumbled down the stairs, and ruined the leather covers on several of the hand railings near the seat stairwells as well as in the forward deck 3 hallway into the theater. Also one of the marble covers on the wall had a rather large chunk removed. Now the cart had been removed but the evidence of the damage as well as lots of small wood chips were present.
Heard a crew member say they went into the Walt Disney theater during the storm and the theater backdrops were swinging the most she had ever seen. She indicated there was damage in the WDT but did not go into detail. They had gone to sleep at about 4 am certain that the ship would not sail in the morning but they were awaken at 7 and told they would sail and started cleaning up the mess.
Had heard that a basketball hoop was broken as well as a ping pong table destroyed on the upper decks
When the crowd started thinning out of the lobby. we left the BVT via the shops on deck 3 and it was amazing the shops look very much put back together. In fact the shelves were all up, 90% had inventory in. No one in my family believed me how bad it was until I showed them photos on the internet.
I do have to say thank God and all we got back with no major injuries..
