Biggest Loser Run/Walker Thread 2012/13--Everyone Welcome! :)

I've yet to do a race where I didn't cry at least once -- sometimes more than once. ;) I think it's just part of the process. :hippie:

I'm still here and I would love it if the thread stays open. If it wasn't for Disboards, I would have never even imagined a half - marathon. And yet, I made reservations today to do just that. I'm doing the Princess. I picked up a pretty decent 10K time last weekend (1:07) so here I go.

Congratulations on your great 10k time and registering for the Princess!!!
That is so exciting!
:)

I have already warned Mike to expect a HUGE sobfest at the finish line. I usually get weepy at the end of races anyhow, so I can't even imagine what this one is going to be like!

I'd say you'll have earned a good cry! :goodvibes

Congrats on your 10k! That's great! I haven't figured out if I can do the Princess yet - a hopeful maybe.

I start my yoga class tonight !!!! I'm a little nervous but very excited!
I hope you love it! So far I've never been to one I didn't like. :)

I am trying some new shoes - they are called Altra - they have a "zero drop" sole, which means the heel cushioning is the same thickness as the forefoot. I just jogged in place and around my house with them so far - I want to make sure I can handle these - I'm so picky about shoes. It does make the Chi Running and Walking form come more naturally when you don't have the typical big running shoe heel. But every time I've tried something other than my tried-and-true Asics, I regret it. We'll see! For now, my Asics aren't completely shot, so I will be alternating them anyway. Can I make my Asics last me until Wine & Dine? Not sure. It seems like I'm breaking in new shoes the week before every half that I do! That's my fear, I guess: that I won't like the Altras enough to do long runs and my current Asics will be dead by then and...and... :faint:

Nicole--I can't wait to hear if you like the Altras. We went to look at a pair last weekend, but they only had the trail shoes in stock and they were very stiff. I like the Newtons but I think they are hard on my heel during the walk breaks. There is some cushioning, but not enough in my opinion. What I read about the Altra's made it sound like they had a bit of overall cushioning, but still 0 drop. I end up on my toes too much--which is why I am hoping the running shoes are a little more flexible. Did they tell you to expect some calf/achilles soreness at first?

Melinda--have fun at yoga! What I have found is that I don't always like the class, but I always love how it makes me feel. lol Make sure you tell the instructor you are a beginner--I think you are a beginner, right?:goodvibes

You ladies were right!! Yoga was great and VERY hard:) @Rose, it was a beginner class, the 1st in a series of 3. The instructor took her time and explained every move in great detail. I can't wait for the 2nd class. I feel so energized and centered at the same time. I never would have thought to try yoga if I hadn't read it here. Thanks so much. You ladies are full of great ideas. Happy almost Friday!!

Good luck this weekend to:
Liz--Race to Rid Sids
Mark--That Dam Mud Run

And I believe LisaH might be running this weekend as well! :)

Melinda--so glad you liked yoga!

Happy Friday! :)

Good luck to this weekend's racers!

Rose - they did say there could be a little calf soreness with the Altras, but they have a lot shorter break in period than barefoot running shoes. I'm trying to decide if I should bite the bullet and wear them outside today or keep running around my house another day.

Quick race report! I did a 5K this morning - benefitting a foundation doing SIDS research and in memory of a sweet baby lost to SIDS. The family are friends of friends, and I don't know them, but it was powerful stuff thinking about all they've been through.

It was our coldest fall morning yet - 30 degrees when I got up! Even in gloves, my fingers were numb when the race started. Lucky for me, I was at Athleta yesterday to get some cold weather gear - headed out today in most of it!

The course was nice - suburban neighborhood and mostly flat with just a couple of notable exceptions. I've added a loop to my runs at home that has a pretty steep hill, though, so when I saw the first big incline on this course, I just reminded myself that I've been doing these at home...

It stayed cool, but the changing leaves and the rhythm of the running around me (and my playlist!) kept me moving along happily. This was the first time I've done this distance where I only checked my watch 2-3 times.

I've been doing Galloway intervals on my long runs but wanted to run this one all the way through. And I did! I matched my 5K PR and - color me shocked - won my age division! I felt good when I was done, even after turning on the jets for the last quarter mile or so. I'm really happy with how this one went. :)

Congratulations Liz!! Sounds like a wonderful race.:goodvibes

I ran a long run this weekend. The plan was 16miles plus a mile cool down walk. We ran 17 miles (run 2 min walk 1 min) at an 11:45 average pace and walked another mile at the end for a total of 18!!! I was very anxious after last weekend, but the miles just seemed to melt away. It really was an awesome run. :) I am feeling a little beat up and sore, but overall just great. No ice packs were needed, which is kind of how I judge runs.:thumbsup2 I even ran the last mile without walk breaks at ~10 min/mile pace. Not too shabby.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend.:goodvibes

Holy crap! Congratulations ROSE! That's a crazy long run!! I am so proud of you!! How inspirational :)

Upcoming Races: Biggest Loser Run/Walk 5K (Panama City, FL)
Completed Races in 2012 (or earlier): Crawdad 5K (Ozark, AL)

Must admit, I'm more of a walker than a runner right now. I've only done the one 5K, and, of course, the most important thing is that I finished, nevermind the 57 minute time.

I was curious if there's anyone doing the Biggest Loser races, especially in Panama City on December 30?

For those of us running the Wine and Dine Waivers can be printed- I'm bib # 3822!:thumbsup2 I figure that puts me around corral C! :yay:I'll be driving up Saturday Mid morning and staying at All Star Sports- plan to head to the expo then Down Town Disney for Lunch then check in for a nap- DH and DS will head to Epcot and meet me at the finish. Ran 9 on Sunday and was happy with the run-I have a 5mile Trail race this weekend then the following weekend want to do 12-15 depending on the legs- will keep the last two weeks before the wine and dine light with just 6miles each for the long run. If anyone else knows their bib #'s please post -

Hi All

I need your opinion. The weather here is starting to turn yucky :( We have 4-6 weeks max of run/walking outside before it just won't be possible anymore. Last night it was in the 40's and we were getting pelted with light sleet- not to mention it is pitch black on the school track! I get the begeezus scared out of me every time someone passes me in the dark.

Anyhow, to my question.... I'm wondering if I should get a 3or 4 month gym membership over the winter and continue my run/walking.

I question it because I really don't want to. I have never run on a treadmill and I HATE exercising in front of other people. I even make my kids and husband leave the living room when I do Zumba. And I am quite the Zumba expert!

Secondly, I don't feel as if I have really progressed in my running ( been doing it since August ) so I don't feel I will lose much over the winter.

I would continue with Zumba and yoga over the winter and my daily indoor walks at work.

Maybe I'm missing something as I am new to the run/walking.... Currently I run for 60 seconds and walk 90. I do that for 30 minutes. I really don't seem to get any better than that. Or maybe I am right where I should be?

Thanks for any advise :)

I guess I hadn't realized there were Biggest Loser races. :upsidedow I will have to look into them. Welcome! All levels of walking and running fit in well here at WISH. :wave2:

Eek! I'm bib #5891. Not sure what that means. I've only ever been in B or C for Disney races, but maybe I've been moved back. :confused3 Or Dottie, maybe you're in B this year. I'm happy to be more with people at my own pace, just feel bad that DH always finish over an hour before me. Last year he took a nap in Ellen's Energy Adventure while waiting - a private showing as there was only one other guest in there!

I think it depends on your running goals. If you enjoy running and want to complete any races in the first half of next year, you should figure out a way to keep going during the winter. If you'd be happy walking throughout the winter along with Zumba and yoga, you would certainly maintain a good level of fitness. Maybe work in some more core or lower-body strength training as well. Also, if you're able to do a brisk walking pace on your indoor walks at work, you could aim for walker friendly events in the spring and summer and maybe something longer using run/walk in the fall.

***************
So that ALTRAs - on Friday I really wasn't sure I liked them, something in the footbed felt weird. I peeled up the insole and found a second rubbery insole underneath. I had totally forgotten these came with an optional stability "wedge", as they call it. If your feet are neutral, you remove it. The shoes felt so much more normal after I took that out! Did a short 30 minute walk/run with them.

I'm still recovering from my 13-miler 10 days ago. The back of my right knee is still bugging me - not sure still if it's a knee thing, bottom of hamstring, top of calf, nerve thing, or what. Stretching and foam rolling seem to help but not cure. My online research has been inconclusive. Was supposed to do 4 miles on Sunday but only did that including warm up and cool down (usually I don't count that time or distance). Leg started to bug me enough I didn't want to push farther. Managed 30 minutes today knowing it was there, but not in pain.

I'm also taking glucosamine religiously and using arnica cream (homeopathic) once a day or so. I'm thinking about getting it checked out to make sure I'm not making things worse or that it won't come back with a vengeance as we get closer to the marathon.

In other fitness news, I looked into the Yoga place near my house - I've been doing okay with the DIY at-home method, but think I might like to try to fit it into my schedule more regularly. They have a late "candlelight" class at 8:30pm, so I could possibly get to that even if I do DD's bedtime routine (DH and I usually take turns).

:welcome: Kim! Nice to have you join us! :flower3: Congratulations on your 5k. Like Nicole said we have all levels of runners on this thread. I do run/walk intervals with much more walking than running.

I just saw this on the Runner's World Facebook feed this week that I think applies to all of us:

Hi Kim! :wave2:

Wow Rose; great run! :goodvibes

Hi Alice! :wave2: Nice to still have nice weather but less smoke for a change in our neck of the woods.

Dottie, I am in corral D and as happy as can be. :yay: I was in C for Tinkerbell. I need that little cushion between me and the sweepers. ;) I think your plan to take it easy the last couple of weeks is a good one. I have 15 this week-end and then only speedwork until the race. I'm going to cross of the miles on the map as I go along and picture where I am to help pass the time.

If you aren't training for a race or anything it would be fine to take a break from running considering how active you are now. Do you do any speed work or vary your intervals at all? Do you track to see if you get a bit farther every run? Or are you running just to have a good time? pirate: One winter I used the indoor track ocassionally and just paid the $10 day pass as I needed it. I could use the facility all day -- even the hot tub. If you do take a break maybe a race or some goal will help you to have something to work toward when spring comes and you can get outside again. Personally, I would not do this if I didn't have Disney races to look forward to but that is probably me and my sore legs talking. :smickey:

Nicole, hope that knee feels better soon! :flower3: Take it easy and hopefully it will be recovered very soon. The "candlelight" yoga sounds very relaxing but I would be worried I would fall asleep during the resting part! ;) Can't wait to see you soon at the W&D! :yay:

I had a local 10k race on Sunday. I had a great race although I did not quite get the time I was hoping for. But if I kept up that pace for a half it would take 14 minutes of my Tinker Bell time so I called it a success! :tink: I am definitely feeling the effects from running what was the last race for my shoes. I have my new pair and will be breaking them in on my LR this week-end. I've worn them a couple of days at work and on a couple of short runs already. I'll take my spare pair in case I get any blisters or anything.

Our lovely hostess is celebrating her son's birthday with him and his friends at WDW this week and asked me to post a QOTW.

What do you like to wear when you are running? Do you like to dress up for your races?

Have a great day!

Just checked the Wine and Dine race thread- I'm in corral B( 2166-4535) so I believe you will be in C. Sorry I did not write all the corral placements down.

Lisa H- QOTW- I do not do costumes however I try to be matchy- For the princess I wore yellowish attire since Belle is my favorite Princess- I made a shirt to wear afterwards that said "A Belle at heart but a Beast When I run with those Characters on it- Not sure yet what I will wear for the W/D depends on if I wear my blue Brooks glycern 9 or my pink Glycern 10s I guess
