Dollar Car Rental MCO - Warning

Dollar Rental Car associates at MCO tell lies.

We arrived late after a long flight from Seattle.

The Dollar Car rental associate asked my husband if he wanted the carinsurance. My husband declined it but was then told that his own insurance would not be accepted in Florida, that te ar insurance we had in WA did not transfer to car rentals in FL. My husband then agreed to take the expensive car rental insurance.

It was about two days later when we both thought that what he had been told was probably not true. He called our insurance company and was told that yes, our own insurance does indeed cover rental cars in other states including Florida.

Had we arrived earlier in the day, my husband would have called our insusrers before taking out the insutance.

We don't usually rent cars in FL, we usually get ME from the airport to the hotel.

I also heard overheard another Dollar rental person insisting to another couple that they should by a sunpass card, even though they were staying in the Orlando area and not intending to drive much.

All car rental agencies worldwide tell lies.

You needed to check with your own insurance company first (like a few days in advance) because (surprise!) sometimes it does not cover rental cars.

But if your credit card covers rental cars, you can decline (and insist on declining*) the rental company's coverage even if your own insurance does not cover.

You do not have to buy anything that the rental agent just insists that you buy.

* A few rental companies have written rules that let them require that you buy their coverage if you don't prove you have it on your own car, but chances are that if your own coverage does not cover rentals, that detail won''t be caught and you end up declining their coverage and ending up with no coverage whatsoever.

I rented a Ford Fusion form them in May at MCO. The car was GREAT. But the counter agent was pushy about insurance. My CC provided rental insurance. BUt he kept going on about if I got pulled over I wouldn't have a ins. card. It was 1:30 AM and I was already in a bad mood because of a 5 hour delay. I did not back down, they can't make you take it.
But the car made up for it. LOADED!! Leather, Sat. radio, Super nice!!

That is horrible that they lied to you. I would write an email to Dollar with your story and see if you get a response.

I usually get a good deal with National but I have rented from Dollar before. The last time was in June in Vegas and the car was horrible - beat up and made noises every time I went over a bump. I will put Dollar low on my list now. Thanks for sharing.

Same story off and on from all agencies, so it's not specific to Dollar. They get commission on all those add ons, and you're always going to find sales agents that stretch the truth or even lie.

Did you get your money back that you paid for the insurance? My sister and husband arrived in Florida several days before us and had this same thing happen at Dollar.......when I got there I explained that it was simply not true.......they drove back to the airport and got their money refunded without difficulty.

We almost always go with National because of the emerald aisle and thus avoidance of horrible counter persons. In San Diego, I had an Alamo counter person try the same insurance pressure on me. But I had been through that beforee and had assurances from our insurance agent that it wasn't true. Always try to carry a copy of my ins. card when I am renting

Thanks, we haven't encountered this problem with other rental agencies in other states, we have previously used enterprise.

My husband has written to Dollar and initially they responded with a "tough luck" type of email. Now a second, more stroingly worded email has been sent.

As for the car, we weren't very impressed, the trunk kept popping open for one thing.

We definitely will not be renting from Dollar again.

If you know that your insurance covers then you don't need to tell that to the agent more than once. Instead you can later tell the agent that you don't care and you are still declining his coverage.

Call Dollar and tell them this is a clear case of consumer fraud. Don't mess around with any more emails. Get the name of the person you talk to, and tell him that if they don't refund your money ASAP you will send a copy of all the emails and a letter to the Florida State Insurance Commissioner, Mr. Kevin McCarty, detailing the entire occurrence.

And if they don't pay you within a week, follow through. Every state has an insurance commissioner, helping consumers is what they get paid the big bucks for.

I bet you get your money. :)

This is why I always use Alamo's kiosk instead of going to the counter. In fact, if you're not using a coupon or e-coupon, you can check in online from home and go directly to the garage, same as EI. If using a coupon code, then you stop by the kiosk, print out a receipt, head to the garage, then the rest is just like EI.

I think anymore all rental companies have some kind of frequent renter plan that's free to join and allows renters to avoid the counter.

We usually rent from Dollar as they usually have the best prices but they do lie and are pushy on adding extra stuff.

The sales person almost had us prepay for the gas as they had the best prices. We decided at last minute to chance it and thankfully we did as they were going to charge us $.20 more per gallon:scared:

I have used Dollar at MCO and never have any problems.

Sign up for Dollar Express --- you literally go directly to the garage---and the keys are waiting in your vehicle with your name on the car.

I never talked to anyone!! They check your license at the gate to exit and
I am off...

I love it!!

Is this something you sign-up for on their site? Can it be done for an existing reservation?? I have a great rate from them, but never used them before--and REALLY do not want the hassle of the counter sales agent.
