Princess 1/2 walkers?

I had a metronome implanted :lmao: in my brain when I took classical guitar lessons at age 10. A mechanical metronome can be very helpful.

About 99% of all my training is by myself but I am never by myself. I have always had-me, myself and I keeping me company. Lots of talking to myselves while exercising. :scared1:

Keep this in mind-most everybody walked before running. Walking is natural and good for the body while running takes much work and beats the body up.

Good luck, train smart but above all-HAVE FUN. :thumbsup2

Classical guitar? Wow, your talents are unending, John!

I was obviously asleep when rhythm was being passed out because I have absolutely none. Eleven years of piano lessons didn't even help. That's why the metronome appealed to me, if the beeping noise didn't drive me batty first.

I really am having a great time, especially now that it's getting cooler. My arms and legs are stronger and trimmer, although I still have a long way to go.

So thankful that I've had this thread to ask all of these questions. John, I really appreciate all of your help and encouragement. Glad to know about your self-conversing...I've managed to have a lot of those in my walking time. It might freak out my neighbors, but it sure does clear my head.

Dreamer and any other walkers, since you have a PHM under your belt, is there anything you wish you had done in your training that you didn't do? Is there anything you did in your training that you are so glad you did?

Is there anything in those two questions that even made sense!?

My bolding and they are GREAT QUESTIONS!!!

I've learned to talk quietly to myself. Because of the conversations and my enthusiasm for training, I have friends who think that at 62yo I am crazy. Sometimes I wonder myself about "being committed" or "being committed".
:rotfl:

Thanks for the kind words, John VN and debbieandroo. I made the leap and registered today. :cool1: My daughter and I are registered for the PHM and the Race Retreat. I also booked our room at the Art of Animation and am searching for flights. I had read and was following Galloway, but am now more interested in chiwalking. I found a local chiwalking trainer and sent her an email. I think the technique would minimize the stress on my knee. :thumbsup2

I look forward to our journey together, PHM walkers. :dance3:

FANTASTIC!!!! We should all be so fortunate to find an actual trainer. I am envious.

If anyone needed something to be easy on the knee, it was me. Not only is it easier on the knees but the shins, glutes, hams, quads, achilles....everything.

Good luck.

:cool1::cool1: CONGRATULATIONS! I registered today too!

Cool about the chiwalking instructor. I'd love to know more about that. Not that I don't love our own personal instructor, John, but it is difficult to see you all the way from Tennessee. :)

Hi everyone! I've been away from the boards for a while but I have a question and couldn't think of a better group to ask.

I did my 14 mile walk yesterday and my time was 12:56/mile, which is close to a best time for me. The walk was uneventful (no obvious injuries or awkward movement) but today my left hip is pretty sore. I believe it's "sore" and not "injured" (I think I can tell the difference based on prior knee injuries) but I thought I'd ask the group if anyone else has had the same experience and if it's normal. By the way the soreness is not so serious that it interferes with my normal walking activities, it's just annoying. I walked for a mile this morning with my daughter in the stroller and there wasn't a noticeable increase in pain.

I'm really excited about doing the Goofy as a walker and I just want to make sure I'm not going down a path to destruction. So what do you all think?

12:56mpm-awesome :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

I wind up being sore all the time. As I type this my right knee is giving me some unhappy feedback but I know there is no injury. Just part of the after effects from exercise and the getting older crud that I expect and accept.
As for your hip, pay close attention to reactions to your movements. I wouldn't think there is anything major unless you get severe shooting pains or growing pain intensity today.

Thanks very much! I'll keep a close eye on it. Hey, this is all your fault anyway. Reading your posts inspired me to walk it in the first place and gave me hope to still complete it and get those medals! :worship:

...That being said, next time my wife complains about me getting up at 3:30 for a long walk I'm blaming you! :)

No problem, I'll take the blame. I got our yesterday at 3:45AM and the humidity was 90%. Fogged my glasses so bad it was hard reading my Garmin.
Absolutely love the quiet during the early hours.

Me too. My favorite part is the occasional meteorite you see. Gotta say though, even though I live in a pretty safe neighborhood it made me very nervous last time when the car with the blasting music passed me and then stopped for a minute or two in the middle of the road, just ahead of me. That's a lonely feeling!

Meteorites are great but the coolest thing was when I just happened to look up and saw the ISS passing overhead. Know what you mean about the lonely feeling. When it's a New Moon it's REALLY DARK around here.

Hi. I am new to all of this. I just signed up today for the Princess half. I am hoping I have enough time to train. I plan on walking and running just a little.

Just wondering if anyone has any advice. I joined a gym in January and have been working out regularly but mostly eliptical and weights. When I walk fast I have been having calf pains. It is only in my right calf. I think it is something to do with the way I step. I feel like I am walking on the outside of my foot. I did go and get fitted at a running store for proper shoes and recently went to a podiatrist. He really did not do much and told me he would reccommend an MRI but I hate to spend the money for an MRI when it really does not bother me in my everyday living. I don't think it is anything major. Once I get past the first mile or two it seems to ease off and is barely noticable. I also notice that if I am on the treademill and holding on I don't feel it as much as if I am on the track. I am not sure if it is because holding on prevents me from putting all my weight on my leg. Also, when I first started I could barely make the mile because of the pain so it is getting better. The dr did give me various stretching excercises. I am just hoping that I am not getting my hopes up to do the Princess only to find out I can't. I did do 6 miles on the treademill Saturday and averged 14mm.

First off, :welcome: !!!

Okay, regarding calf pain - if it is only in your one leg and goes away after a while, I'm leaning towards tight muscles. Stretching them, or rolling them may help tremendously. You may also want to slow down and pay attention to your form. I think that an MRI is a pretty drastic step. Also, don't hold on to the treadmill. If you have to hold on you need to slow down. Holding on changes your gait (how you walk) which may have something to do with it.

Hope this helps!

Another :welcome:!

You just got some good advice. :thumbsup2 I would add that another trip to the store with a video of you on the TM might show something happening during your foot plant.

The ISS?!? Wish I would have seen that!!!

I can not believe this...I have broken my naby toe in THREE places! Right now it is quite painful and has me sidelined. I did it approx 3 weeks ago but the pain was still so much I figured a drs visit was in order
Dr. taped it and said probably another 3 weeks before it feels better. Yikes...if it werent for bad luck Id have no luck at all :(

It will get better. Broke my toe on right foot shortly before this year's Kentucky Derby Half Marathon. Never went to Dr., just had to tape across entire foot for stability.

After two attempts to contact the ChiWalking trainer, I still haven't heard from her. So, I have nothing to report back unfortunately.

But Disney Visa holders can take advantage of great room rates during our PHM weekend. Just booked Animal Kingdom Lodge for 35% off!! :cool1:

Hope you are all doing well. Sorry to hear about that broken toe. :(
