Day 3, Tusker House Breakfast​

So we had an 8:30am ADR at Tusker House that morning and since we didn’t stay out horribly late the night before, we all got up and got to our reservation on time. Having checked my Team August list of reservations, I knew that 3 other DisFamilies would be dining there at the same time as we were. I had my eyes peeled and was on the lookout for those team August tags. I didn’t manage to see any of them

So, now onto the food. We were trying to be very careful about how much we would eat at any buffets and not gorge ourselves. That was not going to be a problem, at least not for me because… I was still not hungry! (Yes, it does seem to be a recurring theme! )

Now, my DH would tell you that I am a creature of habit for my breakfasts when I eat out. I get 2 eggs over medium, ham, hashbrowns/homfries and white toast. If the restaurant has it, I will get a side of sausage gravy to put over top of basically everything. So, here I am with al this food in front of me in this lovely building and what do I get???

Pretty much what I could get that would match my standards. Scrambled eggs, ham, potatoes and corn bread. And then over the top of everything is that wonderful, creamy, hot sausage gravy. Yum! Yes, there is also bacon on that plate. I don't mind Disney bacon. I like it chewy so I eat it. The ham wasn’t salty, it was juicy and freshly carved, the eggs weren’t runny, they were perfect with the gravy on them. I got the hard boiled egg for my DS because I didn’t think he saw them. But apparently my DD was also looking out for my DS because she got him one as well. Love that girl of mine. My DS was having another one of his small moments and didn’t want to do anything. I managed to get him to eat and he got all meat again but he had 2 eggs then with the one DD got him then he also ate the one I got him. I got that juice they serve and it is so good and fruity. I also got milk. I really hate those straws as it changes the flavor of what ever you are drinking. But I have to use it because I don’t know how to drink from a glass with out having a huge mess all over my shirt, because I’m 3 years old??? Oh well, it happens, I deal with it and move on! We all played it close to the vest on food items and didn’t venture out on any limbs, so I apologize for not giving you all something interesting or new to ooh and ahh over.

Now, I didn’t take any other food pictures because I am not a fan of buffet food pictures, it all looks like a hot mess. But we did get some character pictures there and I will share those with you.

While we like there, our breakfast style is generic and standard. Since we don’t go for the culturally different items, this is one meal we can get anywhere else. My kids are kind of at the end of liking character meals and they found them coming around for the pictures and all more annoying than anything else. I am not sure this will make it on our do again list any time soon. There was nothing wrong with the food, it was just standard and I can get standard just about anywhere.

Welcom and thank you. We went during the free dining promotion and upgraded to the deluxe, so it didn't cost the full price for us. It was way too much food, but at least we know they don't throw it away. One of the CM's told us they compost it and put it in the flower gardens and such. If we do the Deluxe again, we would do a huge amount of signatures. This was our first chance at signature on this trip because my DH said he never wanted do a signature because it wasn't a good value for the money. He has since changed his mind. I like to see the characters in different outfits and it is cute. Some day when my kids are out of the house, I will attack Disney World in a totally different way than I do now with the kids. I have ideas I tell you. Now to just get the kids out and on their own (I will be waiting a while since DD just turned 10 ) See, the one issue I have is I can't go on vacation without my kids. We only get 1 vacation a year and I want to give them as many family memories and vacations as we can, it's what my parents did for me growing up. If only I would win the lottery...

I was curious what you did when that big storm came through after we saw you in Germany. (We didn't actually get anything but I wanted to take photos of all the goodies in the case too!) We hoofed it to Mexico and holed up with about 3 dozen other people in the entrance to their pavillion. That was fun!

As for La Hacienda - the Del Mar looks fabulous mostly because of the shrimp and scallops. Certainly better than the shrimp tacos I had last year. Too bad about the apps and dessert but there's always 2014!

First of all, Paige says Thank you for the birthday wish. I can't believe my baby is in double digits! Yes, as of right now, there is always 2014.
Breakfast is a rough one for us. I normally don't eat more than a cereal bar or granola bar, DS doesn't normally eat anything and DD and DH usually have a bowl of cereal or a bagel. That is the height of our breakfast dining. So to get up and do all these breakfasts is totally out of the norm for us. Then have them be all the way across the "World", it's that much harder to get up on vacation. But, when I no longer have the kids with me, it will be different, I can promise you that.

Day 3, Yak & Yeti Lunch​

So after some rides and walking around, it was lunch time. I tried to put as much time in between our meals but there is only so much time in the day. DH and I were already saying that our next trip will be different. He likes the Deluxe plan but it is sooooooo much food and to go into these great restaurants not even slightly hungry is almost as much a waste as not eating the food. While we tasted the food, in our mind, there was some kind of different tone to it, not wanting to eat. Sad , and that is just not a good thing at Disney! So we went in and waited in the lobby. We waited a good 20 minutes to get seated. They were busy, at least it seemed. When we were seated upstairs, we noticed that we were the only ones seated in our section of about 6 or 7 tables. Odd?!
We all had some ideas about food that we wanted to try. So we got our menus and our server Joel (pronounced jo- elle). He was nice and gave us the ins and outs of the menu and the dining plan. I have to say that when the kids ordered their foods, Joel was impressed that they ate all kinds of foods and were ordering for themselves. DD made his eyes open very wide when she ordered. So we will start with her. For her appetizer and DH’s, they got the
Thai Chili Chicken Wings - fried chicken wings tossed in a sweet Thai chili sauce, spicy Asian pickled cucumbers

They both thought they were juicy, well flavored and served hot. I tried a bit and they had a bit of a sweet-tangy flavor. If I liked meat on the bone, I might have ordered these. My DH thought the Asian pickled cucumbers were delicious. He said they were ever so lightly pickled and wanted more of them. DD wanted nothing to do with hers.
DS decided on the
Pork Egg Rolls - chili plum dipping sauce

He liked these but not enough to finish them. I tried a bite and found out why. There was just a touch to much grease in/on them. One bite and I was done. They weren’t bad, but they could have been awesome if they weren’t greasy.
I wanted the
Pork Pot Stickers - pan seared or steamed, soy lime dipping sauce

I saw these on the menu and said yes. I really loved these except for one component, the sauce that was on the bottom of the plate. I didn’t like how it mixed with the sear on the dough. I occasionally like to dip my pot stickers, but it has to be at my discretion. I didn’t like that I didn’t get a choice in the matter. But they all got eaten, just sayin!
We were then onto entrees and this is where Joel had a what???? moment. DD ordered her meal, she got the
Baby Back Ribs - slow-roasted ribs, hoisin BBQ sauce, chicken fried rice, sweet chili slaw

These were juicy and so flavorful. You have to slow roast to get that flavor and the tender meat just fell off the bones. So yummy, I should have gotten that, but I had decided to try something new, why do I do that??? I know what I like sometimes and try something that I have never seen or heard any reviews of. What did I get? I went with the
Bourbon Chicken - Tempura chicken, carrots, green onions, sweet bourbon sauce

This was not what I was expecting. It was breaded and if I had looked past the title of it and saw the tempura part, I would have known what to expect. I was thinking I was going to get bourbon chicken like at a Chinese place. My chicken was dry and didn’t work for me at all. I didn’t get any bourbon flavoring at all. Not a winner for me, which was fine because I wanted room for dessert. The only problem was that DD had so many uneaten ribs on her plate right next to mine and my hand kept finding it’s way over to her plate. Yum! So I was too full for any real dessert. But what did DS and DH have for lunch you ask? Well DS went with a standard for him, he got the
Tempura Shrimp - chili plum sauce, coconut-ginger rice, stir fried vegetables

The shrimp were nicely sized and this tempura was not greasy, unlike the egg rolls. I got one bite because when it comes to shrimp, he doesn’t usually share at all. He didn’t touch much else on the plate but the shrimp he loved. DH wanted something light because he was full also. He perused the menu and found this lovely bowl
MalAsian Seafood Curry - Mahi Mahi, scallops, little neck clams, mussels, shrimp, zucchini, roma tomatoes, red curry coconut broth, and jasmine rice

He says it was good but in his opinion, it had too much rice in it. He’s just not a rice guy. He says he wouldn’t get it again because of the rice. If he could get it if he could get it without the rice, but most likely next time he would just get the ribs. DD got up and went over to his bowl and was eating out of it. I asked her if she was Helen Keller, she was trying bits and bites from everyone’s plate. She said she should have gotten the curry because it was smooth with lots of flavor and just enough heat. (Really, this is a 10 yr old? That’s my girl )
Then dessert happened. Now, DH kept saying he was going to get the wontons. I knew I wouldn’t eat that so when we went to order imagine my surprise when DH gets the
Sorbet - Mango, lemon, raspberry

What??? Cause that is what I got also. I knew I needed something very light and this was the winner. These were sweet and tart and cold and so good, all at the same time. DH said that he would burst if he went with the wontons so sorbet was the better route.
DS went with the
Chocolate Cake - Chocolate pudding cake, raspberry sauce

He got the sauces on the side and just ate the cake. He is not a dip/sauce kinda guy. I tried a bite with both sauces and if I had room, I would have eaten this, but it was a heavy moist cake.
DD decided on an even heavier option. Can you guess what that was? And how is it that the children have more room for heavier and larger amounts of food than the adults??? Not sure how that works.

New York Cheesecake - New York cheesecake, mango and strawberry coulis, and fresh whipped cream

She loved this creamy yummy goodness.

So, all in all, Yak and Yeti was a good choice. Good service, our drinks were always full and the food was well cooked and mostly good (except for my chicken). Would we go back? Yes, but again, I would want to be hungry. The worst part of the lunch was the waiting to be seated.

Day 3, Maya Grill Dinner​

So this night was one that I was really looking forward to this meal for a long time. When DH and I originally planned our trip, we booked and the very next thing we did was call my Mom and Dad. They live in Kissimmee, Florida and like to visit us while we are in “town”. So we called them and told them the dates that we would be there and where we were planning on dining. They told us the ones they would like to join us, so we could add their numbers to our reservations when we made them. The very next thing we did was call my sister, who also lives in Kissimmee. My sister, b-i-l, and niece would also be joining us for one meal. Unfortunately, my brother couldn’t join us. So, this one meal was very important for me. I love visiting with my family, but I don’t get to do it that often. This is another reason I love going to Disney. I get a family vacation and a visit with my family as well. Double win for me! So on this special occasion, we would be dining at Maya Grill. My family of 4 loves this place. Every time we go there, it is at most 80% full. I still think this is a well kept secret on Disney property. So we were late because we had a few bus issues but my mom went and told the CM and they said it wasn’t a problem. When we got there, they just adjusted where they were putting our party of 9.

*Disclaimer- there are no pictures of our meals, just dessert and a bit of story and how we liked the food. SORRY!!!*

When we were seated, our server came over within about 3 minutes to greet us and take drink orders. We explained to Tanya that 4 of us were on the Deluxe dining plan and the others would be splitting theirs into 2 checks. So we got settled and decided what to order for the appetizers. We wanted to order our 4 so we could all share them. So we ordered the
Seaside Grilled Calamari - with roasted nopales, tomato and chili lime vinaigrette
These were very good. They were crispy and not greasy at all. Everyone that likes calamari thought these were very good. Next was
Pulled Pork Empanada - chipotle cream sauce
This was very good. I would order this again. It was slightly greasy but not in a heavy way and not very much. Yum! Then we got
Queso Fundido - melted cheese with poblano peppers, chorizo and flour tortillas
This was the highlight of the table. We all passed this around and took a little bit each. The kids all wanted this one. The last appetizer we got is not on the all ears current menu. It was
Chicken Flautas - Our signature Shredded Chicken Tinga rolled into flour tortillas and deep fried until golden brown, served with salsa verde and red sauce topped with crema and queso fresco. They were ok. They were slightly bland.

The menu on all ears is not current, but the one on the Disney site is what we ordered from that day. Hope that helps?! The dessert menu on allears is very close to what we were able to order.
We also had chips and salsas. There was a green and red salsa for the chips. I liked the red and it was supposed to be spicy. It had a bit of a kick but not much. It was very good and of a thicker consistency than the green. On to the mains.
My DS got the Shrimp Tacos - Warm Flour Tortillas filled with our signature beer battered Shrimp topped with Red Cabbage, Pico De Gallo and a creamy Avocado Crema
He liked these but he took off the red cabbage.
Next, my dad and I got the
Steak Tacos -Warm Flour Tortillas filled with tender marinated steak topped with Fresh Cilantro, White Onion, Queso Fresco, Salsa Verde and Mild Taco Sauce
The part that I was able to eat was delicious. Since there was no avocado, I was good. The steak was juicy and very flavorful and I could go for some of these right now, I am so hungry!
Next DH got the
Chilorio Pork Enchiladas - Tender shredded pork in a mild Ancho Chile Sauce wrapped in corn tortillas covered in Salsa Verde and topped with melted Monterey Jack Cheese
DH said these were really good and could go for these again now, right now! He wants more. My niece also had these and loved them too. Next we have DD who got the
Chicken Tacos - Warm Flour Tortillas filled with our Char-Grilled Chicken topped with sweet Mandarin Oranges, Cilantro, Radish and a Honey Chipotle Sauce
DD asked for all the toppings for the tacos to be on the side. She ate the oranges by themselves and didn’t touch the others. She ate the tortilla and chicken as plain tacos. She wasn’t very hungry and definitely not adventurous this meal. Oh well, guess that happens sometimes. Next we had My B-in-L who went with the
San Antonio Fajita Skillet - A sizzling skillet of Monterey Jack Cheese topped with your choice of Steak, Chicken or Shrimp, loaded with Sautéed Onions, Bell Peppers and Sour Cream served with warm flour tortillas.
He chose the steak version and liked these very much. They were definitely sizzling when they arrived at our table.
Now here is where we have a small problem with our memory. We took no pictures up until this point, and no notes either because we were so excited to be with our family. So we can’t remember what my sister or mother ordered for their meals. We do know that they both ordered either the chimichanga or burritos. They both liked whatever it was that they ordered. All our leftovers went home with my mom and dad.

After the mains, we had our desserts. We had something special planned. So we decided to order 4 small desserts to share and the cake I ordered.
We got 3 shots and the fried ice cream. We chose the
Tropical fruit salad shot, the Chocolate Mousse - velvet smooth chocolate mousse, layered with chocolate cake, topped with fresh raspberries, and the Strawberry Cheesecake - cheesecake and strawberry filling in a graham cracker crust.

Then out came the cake. We ordered a double chocolate cake to celebrate the 3 birthdays. We had Paige, DD, turning 10, my niece turning 16, and my dad turning 69. They brought it out with lit candles on it and we sang. We only noticed that my nieces name was misspelled as we were looking at this picture to post. OOPS!!! Nobody else noticed then! But back to the cake, O M G ! ! ! ! ! That cake was so freaking delicious and rich. I want this thing now! I am very envious of my mom and dad, because they got to take that home with them and enjoy it multiple times. That cake was $30 and worth every dime. I would get that again to be able to celebrate good times with my family again. Check it out…

In this next picture are my sister, dad, and part of my niece.

The service at this meal was impeccable! Tanya was fantastic and so professional but fun. We knew she had other tables but treated our larger group like we were her only customers. She never let our drink glasses empty and she handled all our needs with class and swiftly. The pace of the meal went along nicely so that we didn’t feel rushed and could socialize as well. She was friendly and almost felt like she was part of our family. She totally earned her tip and I gave her more than I normally do. She let us enjoy our time together and celebrate. She didn’t get anything wrong and was always around when we needed something. I even went as far as to tell the manager about how awesome a job she did. He said he would let her know but also asked if I would be willing to fill out a recognition form at my resort. I did that before we finished our trip. WHEN I GO BACK to Maya Grill, I will be asking for her as our server, this is something I have never done before. She would be our first. So with that in mind, Maya Grill gets a

5 from us. It hit the mark on everything from service to food, to ambiance, and bang for the buck (in our family’s case, since they paid oop). The trifecta! If you like Mexican or tex-mex type foods, give this place a shot. It has some good grub to be had!
It will stay on our must do list!

So our total for the meal was (this is approximate) $169 or 4 TS credits or 42.25/credit

Sorry for the lack of pictures, but I was mostly enjoying family time! Up next we have some snacks and then comes 1900 Park Fare for breakfast.

I rarely see reviews of Maya Grill, so this was really neat! Sounds like a fantastic experience, and I think the menu looks very good (plus, those shot-size desserts are perfect portions!).

I love Maya Grill. We tried it for the first time in January, and when we were there I was feeling quite ill. The restaurant was nearly empty, the servers were accommodating, and it ended up being an excellent experience, despite the circumstances.

This was the second time we tried the DxDP and it is a lot of food. The first time we had a lot of buffets and ate and ate and ate. BAD move on our part. This time we tried to do new places and less buffet and when we did the buffets, we tried to limit what we ate. We love Y&Y. My DH now wants to do it again, DXDP but next time do almost all of our dinners as signatures.

Glad you were able to find time to catch up. I know some people don't think there are great options in AK, but we like Flame Tree BBQ and Yak & Yeti. If we do a breakfast, we do love Tusker House, even if our choices are boring. We always do a resort restaurant for dinner on our AK day because they close earlier than other parks. That is usually when we do Maya Grill. We just take a bus to Coronado Springs. We have found it works well for us.

I rarely see reviews of Maya Grill, so this was really neat! Sounds like a fantastic experience, and I think the menu looks very good (plus, those shot-size desserts are perfect portions!).

I have never seen Maya Grill full! We have never had a bad or even questionable meal there. It has always been good/great. This last one was the best for multiple reasons. Those shots were perfectly sized and perfectly executed. You got different textures and flavor in every spoonful. They worked really well. I think you should give it a try sometime soon!

Linda, it is a very nice restaurant. Most of the food is flavorful but not too spicy. My mom can't do much spice and she loved her dish. The menu they had this trip was different almost completely from when we were there last time and it is much more tex-mex/mexican. Last time we were there I got a beef tips meal. This is along the same line as La Hacienda, where La Hac is on the mexican (in case you didn't know where it was located - really, cause noone readying this would know where it was??? but Maya is skirting the tex-mex side of the fence). Have I completely messed with anyones head on that explanation, or is it just mine???

We can't remember how we found it, but however it was, we are so glad we did find it! We had to cancel it one time, when we were on the DXDP last time and we all got sick, and we were all really sad that this restaurant was the one we had to let go. It was a sad day on our trip! Like I said before, we love that place and have had nothing but great experiences each time. The servers are excellent there and yes, it is true, very accomodating. I will continue to book this restaurant.

I'm caught back up with the last couple of reviews.

I'm glad it wasn't just me that noticed the pork egg rolls at Y&Y were a bit greasy. I liked them but by the second one I was beyond the initial amazement at how good they were (and steaming hot!) and noticed the grease. Next time I definitely want to try the shrimp tempura - that looks really good.

I don't think I've seen more than 1 or 2 Maya Grill reviews so it was great to see yours. I'm so glad that you had an awesome family dinner and were able to celebrate all of those birthdays. Yeah... I think they mean't to put an "n" instead of an "m" in your nieces name?

1900 PF is one of my favorites so I am looking forward to that one!

Day 4, 1900 Park Fare​

Sorry for the small hiatus in the report, I really hate when real life gets in the way of a good dining report. But anyway, I am back now and we are moving on to Day 4 which was August 26th. We chose to eat at 1900 Park Fare for breakfast before we headed to the Magic Kingdom. We have eaten here before and we really love their dinner here.

*Small side note of history* we had eaten here in November 2000 for dinner when our DS was 19 months old and this was a villain character dinner. DS was calling all the villains over to our table by waving them in. Captain Hook let him play with his hook. My niece was terrified of them though and she was 3 ½ yrs old. We loved that meal and wanted to go back, but they discontinued it. On our last trip we did the Cinderella dinner there and absolutely loved the step sisters’ act. They were phenomenal!

So we decided we wanted to do breakfast there on this trip. We hadn’t been there for breakfast since they were doing Alice and friends. We got our picture taken and were shown to our table within about 15 minutes.

I didn’t take any pictures of our food because we had nothing terribly interesting. I had eggs, ham, potatoes, all standard fare. DD had some yogurt and fruit. I will say this, the fruit was fresh and sweet, not overly ripe and mushy. The hot food was hot and good. Nothing stood out as a really good item or really bad item. It was all middle of the road edible. The characters we good, stopped for pictures and to say hi.

I like the feel of this restaurant and the food is always dependable, however, it doesn’t have anything that screams “Come back to me every time you are at Disney World”. It sometimes does have screaming children and it can be a loud restaurant. For this reason, I don’t think I will have it on my list for breakfast again, or at least not for a while. If, when we go back again, it still has the step sisters, we may have to squeeze it in again for dinner.

Hi there Karla - welcome back from real life! We need more Karla photos with the characters!

We've done 1900 for breakfast twice and the first time loved it, second time was good but not fabulous and haven't been back since so I agree with your assessment that it doesn't scream come back every time.

I do like the bread pudding there so it has that going for it!

During my last trip, we ended up with an extra TS credit and were going to do either 1900 or Crystal Palace, but read the reviews that 1900 wasn't memorable and opted for Crystal Palace instead. We ate their 3 times and had 3 yummy breakfasts (and me craving Pooh's puffed french toast lol). I'm happy that we opted for CP since it is average and not memorable. Although, I do like the family picture background.

I'm caught back up with the last couple of reviews.

I'm glad it wasn't just me that noticed the pork egg rolls at Y&Y were a bit greasy. I liked them but by the second one I was beyond the initial amazement at how good they were (and steaming hot!) and noticed the grease. Next time I definitely want to try the shrimp tempura - that looks really good.

I don't think I've seen more than 1 or 2 Maya Grill reviews so it was great to see yours. I'm so glad that you had an awesome family dinner and were able to celebrate all of those birthdays. Yeah... I think they mean't to put an "n" instead of an "m" in your nieces name?


1900 PF is one of my favorites so I am looking forward to that one!

Are you still caught up on all the threads, cause I know I am not! We love Y&Y but there is usually one thing that is slightly off. This time 2 for us, the egg rolls and my chicken. Oh well, still really good and good enough to want to go back to. We really do like Maya Grill, it is a little secret that not many people seem to know about. They are very friendly and accomodating and the food is really good. It is one of our must do's. It's funny about the birthday cake, noone noticed when we were there but we were just so happy to see each other and get a chance to really catch up with each other. So it was all good!

Real life is not fun sometimes! I kept wanting to write an update earlier in the week and there just was no time. I will get another one up today or tomorrow though! Now about 1900, we are not big breakfast fans and that could have colored our view on things but it just didn't have any one thing that I would HAVE to come back to have, if you know what I mean!

If I am comparing those 2, I would definitely choose CP over 1900. Not that CP has really stellar food either but it just seems slightly better and if you are going to the MK, more convenient as well. CP will make an appearence later in our trip, stay tuned!
