Tips for selling cub scout popcorn???

Hello! My recommendation is to take a couple tins, different favors, with you for "sampling". I also bring inventory around with me in a wagon so when I go door to door.

As we learned in an episode of Friends, late night at college dorms is also an option popcorn::

I really like the idea of breaking up the boxes and selling the packs in smaller quantities. A troop was selling outside our local grocery this week and the cheapest thing they had was $10 which was just too high for me. The donation jug is a great idea too -- would have put in a couple of bucks if they'd had one.

Not trying to "stir the pot" as my son was in Boy Scouts briefly before I was educations about BSOA. There were several GREAT kids trying to sell popcorn and I admire their bravery and enthusiasm. But until the BSOA accepts diversity and equality for ALL boys, I will not be buying anything at all. It's time to welcome the BSOA into the turn of the Century. Just my .02 :goodvibes

Wife of a former "Popcorn Kernel" here...LOL... PLEASE remember that going door to door and REQUIRING ANY scout to sell popcorn is against National Councils policy.

We no longer are a scout family because my teenage son felt he could no longer be part of the orginazation for several ethical issues but when we were involved the popcorn sales consumed of lives.

One year we could not sit in our dining room for 2 weeks because of all the boxes of popcorn!:rotfl2:

Another Past Popcorn Kernal here. Also Mom to the top selling Cub Scout 2 years running. There were 3 ways to sell - Show and Sell, Take Order Method, and the other way I can't remember, because we didn't participate in it, but you went door to door with product and sold that way.

Show and Sell - the Pack ordered, say $10,000 worth of popcorn. We asked the Town Selectman for exclusive rights to sell on a certain day (in other words - if the Girl Scouts set up a table in town on your sale date, they could be shut down because you had exclusive rights to sell that day). Since we had this permission, we gave everyone courtesy calls, that we had the right to sell in the town, we were setting up tables, etc. One supermarket had us sign paperwork. The only one that caused a problem was Bank of America, we had copies of the letter that we gave the manager. We set up tables - Post Office, Banks, Dunkin'Donuts, Grocery Stores, Liqueur Stores. Split up the $10,000 worth of popcorn amongst the locations and let the boys sell. The first year we did this, TrailEnd didn't have the Military Option - but - we had a box set up that people - "I don't like Popcorn" Well would you like to purchase a box and we will send it to the troops?? I brought 2 carloads of popcorn to Hanscom Air Force Base to send to Iraq. People that wanted to donate money - we put popcorn aside for the food pantry in town.

Take Order Method - the boys would take an order sheet and sell. My DH would take my DS, all dressed in uniform, clipboard, pens, envelope full of change, and they would go door to door. My son sold $2000 worth of popcorn going door to door. It took him and DH about 3 hours.

The above 2 are the two methods that our pack used. We did not encourage internet sales, since the pack did not get any funds this way - just the council.

By our second year selling, we learned from our mistakes of the previous year. If at all possible during the Take Order method - get cash or check up front, it makes it a lot easier to deliver the popcorn. I also made little thank yous up that my DS signed that he taped to the popcorn on delivery. People remember that, and bought more the next year.

If people realize how much the boys love selling the popcorn, or should I say the competition involved, the prizes, it was a huge self esteem booster for my DS. I had one parent tell me - My DS will not need Salesman Skills, that is beneath him, I can afford to pay for anything you do, just tell me how much money you need and I will write you a check. Ahmmmm, missing the point of scouting?? So his poor son sat at the Pack Meeting, while all his fellow scouts were called up onstage to receive their prizes, and recognition, and that poor little boy just sat there with tears streaming down his face, because his parents were ******!!!

So your DS's have a goal in mind - Disney - imagine how they will feel if they were able to pay their own way??!!

Personally I think Trails End popcorn is the best popcorn I have ever tasted. I'm ready to buy and not one Cub Scout has come to my door. Oh and have them point out - the popcorn that they are selling right now, was just harvested this summer. I was selling the year that there were the ??? about the chemicals in certain popcorn products - TrailsEnd never used the chemicals, but all the other popcorn companies did.

Sorry about the length about the post - but I'm passionate about popcorn. I just remembered one more thing - during the Show and Sell segment - there was a small box of microwave popcorn for $5, that sold well. This was not available for the Take Order method

This is awesome thanks! My son's council does not allow us to buy ahead of time. We have spent a lot of time going door to door between 7-8 but not many people are at home. We have spent about 3 hours and he has made 200. Any tips about when to go?

Sorry, I didn't read all threads but around here, you have to get out the very first morning the sale starts. DH always took DS to some very upper high end neighborhoods nearby and did pretty well. There are so many Scouts in our hood that it's a tough sell if you wait any length of time.

I agree with this completely! Last year we loaded up our wagon with all of our popcorn and headed out around 9AM. My DS sold $600 worth in our neighborhood by lunchtime, and we called it quits. Later that afternoon we had other scouts coming to our door trying to sell and they were complaining that no one was buying. I think it also does help that we have the popcorn on hand and don't have to take orders. Instant gratification! :thumbsup2

 I can not believe how many people actually sell door to door popcorn::

Do your governing councils encourage you all to do this? or is it your troop? I am just curious because we were always told that it was against National rules and we would be disqualified for the prizes if our scouts sold door to door.

As far a REQUIRING boys to sell popcorn or sell a certain amount of popcorn that is a GROSS abuse of this fund raising effort. Someone is committing a HUGE violation.:sad2:

And it's impacting....

I was walking out of my grocery (and no I didn't buy the popcorn As a Girl Scout I have had LOTS of issues with the Boy Scouts before this last fiasco LOL) But anyway those poor kids got turned down by several people who quoted this type of statement. (OF course this is a very "diverse" neighborhood so I wondered at the 'wisdom' of the booth location. One may said "let me get this right. I am Gay so I can't join, but you still want me to support you" Poor kids didn't know what to say and the idiot father made it worse, didn't they give out talking points?)

So if your kids are selling I would suggest you read what thelionqueen said and talk with them about an appropraite reponse (hint name calling is not good nor is yelling SHUT UP Axxhole which the "idiot" father above tried :) )

I agree!

Someone at our popcorn meeting mentioned selling at tollway oasis or truck stops have been very successful.

Penalizing kids for philosophies that have nothing to do with them is pretty tacky. Whether boy or girl scouts. I hate when adults take their issues out on kids.

Besides what kind of jerk lectures a kid about that kind of thing?

Agreed. My 7 year old is in scouts because of the good things he can get out of it (Leadership skills, etc.) NOT because of the philosophies of a few people in a higher organizational level. He doesn't even know about these issues, and shouldn't until he is mature enough to have some semblance of understanding. If you don't like the organization and don't choose to buy from the scouts, that's fine. But a simple "no" is sufficient.

Good grief......someone with only 4 posts resurrected a 3 year old thread.....was there any particular reason to do so? If so, I would like to hear it.

But can they ask for a certain amount of $$ in lieu of selling? Our troop asks each boy to either sell $300 minimum OR make a $100 donation.

I would do the donation this year, but with 3 boys, that is $300 and I have my husband and son going to Philmont next summer, so I have GOT to save somehow and I will be darned if I will give up a Disney trip! :rotfl2:
