A Birthday Trip without a Birthday - 2/16: Conclusion and Bonus Birthday Tea

Hi everyone – work has been absolutely crazy over the summer (and it won’t get any better soon, but maybe I am adjusting to it now). But I really want to finish this TR in some way at least.

In the meantime, I have put together a little update for you that is far away from Orlando. I was in Paris in August for a few days and thought I would show you some of the highlights! This first update will be Paris, the city, the next update will be a few pictures form Disneyland Paris (you did not think that I would travel to Paris and not spend some time there as well? ;-)).

Oh – and in case you wondered about the new avatar: It is from the Walt Disney Studios Paris, not because I am such a great fan of that park (it has quite some flaws!!) but because I think it makes a very nice avatar!

I had a few days in Paris and walked around a lot – I just enjoyed all the different neighbourhoods and did not concentrate so much on the big sites as I had seen those on previous trips, so this is just a rather random collection of things I found interesting:

Let’s start at the Centre Pompidou – which houses the museum of modern art as well as a large library:

DSC09678.jpg

The museum is open until 9pm which was great for me as I spent the evening there and watched the sunset, you have a wonderful view from there. The first picture has the Eiffel Tower on the left edge.

DSC09697.jpg

And this is Sacre Coeur, a church on the top of Montmartre (I went there on another day):

DSC09710.jpg

This is kind of the contrast – the Louvre which houses all the old masters:

DSC09656.jpg

Since I am more into modern art than old masters, I did not go in there, but I managed to get into the glass pyramide which you can see through the arch on the previous photo which also functions as the main entrance to the museum:

DSC09667.jpg

Another interesting museum which I visited was the Musee d’Orsay which used to be a railway station and now houses lots of statues as well as paintings my the impressionists:

DSC09739.jpg

My hotel was between the Gare de Lyon which is a very impressive railway station:

DSC09715.jpg

and the Place de la Bastille – which now is home to this memorial:

DSC09623.jpg

but also is the site of the Bastille, a prison, which was famously stormed during the French revolution on July 14, 1789 – stilled celebrated today as the French National Day.

One thing I fell in love with in Paris were the parks – this here is the Jardin de Luxembourg:

DSC09795.jpg

And this is the Tuilleries:

DSC09650.jpg

Do you see the green chairs? They are made of metal and are scattered around the parks so people can sit and relax. It was so inviting and I spent quite some time there reading and soaking up the atmosphere!

On one side of the Tuilleries was the closest I got to the Eiffel Tower on this trip:

DSC09643.jpg

One of my walks (I had downloaded some apps with audio tours on my Iphone and those were really great for a solo traveller!) I walked around Montmartre which was very charming:

DSC00073.jpg

DSC00069.jpg

There was an interesting market street:

DSC00064.jpg

DSC00065.jpg

And that’s a good moment to include two other food pictures – from other places:

DSC09812.jpg

DSC00062.jpg

From the quaint streets I continued on to Sacre Coeur and suddenly met the masses of tourists I had so far avoided mainly. Since tourists are not so interesting, I only show you a close up of the church, it is quite impressive!

Let’s continue with a few more scenes from different streets:

This was a pretty door:

And just around the corner was some street art:

This impressive building is the city hall:

And let’s end with one site which is also the site of a Disney film – Notre Dame:

I hope you enjoyed the brief walk through Paris – as promised Disneyland Paris will follow shortly and then we will continue with the proper TR! I just felt that you needed some more pictures to make up for the long delay!

Oh, you just brought back some wonderful memories of Paris. I love it there...I could go for a fresh croissant right now!

Hello! Glad to know that you have been fine but busy. Thanks for the Paris pics; we spent four days there in 2000 and there are so many things I would like to see again.

Did you try one of the little green balls at the patisserie? They look very interesting!

It's great to see you back on this thread Magdalene!

I had noticed your new avatar. It's really good -- you're right, perfect for an avatar.

Thanks for the pictures of Paris. They make me want to visit. I'll have to show them to Marlene.

Oh - I could have a fresh French croissant anytime - they are just so much better there than here. I have no idea why.... I am glad that you enjoyed the pictures!

Isn't it a shame that there are far too many interesting places in the world - so difficult to decided whether to see the ones again which you have seen and loved or see new ones! :scared:

Hi Ellen! I think you really ought to make Tyler your personal translator! To be honest, my French is very limited and I had no trouble at all to find my way around Paris. Most people who work where there are tourists speak at least a little English.

And I guess you need to go to Italy as well! ;)

Great to have you around again Magdalena !!The tour of Paris is awesome I agree the parks are so peaceful looking !! I leaver for Universal next Thursday and in 27 days will be in Disney!!

Hi Rosie! Oh, I hope you will have a great time at Universal! Have lots of fun! And you really should go on Forbidden Journey even if you don't go on coasters!!!! It is such a great ride!

what a nice surprise!

:cool2:

Did you try one of the little green balls at the patisserie? They look very interesting!

unfortunately not - somehow I was never hungry when I was close to a patisserie. I did not buy one single treat... But I guess that's because I got a few creme brûlée for dessert after my meals... :cloud9:

It's great to see you back on this thread Magdalene!

Thanks! It feels great to be back!!

I had noticed your new avatar. It's really good -- you're right, perfect for an avatar.

And thanks again! I was always looking for something that fits as an avatar and this is Disney - but a bit obscure, so I like it. Not everyone can use the husband's old childhood Mickey like Katharina did. I have always been envious of her avatar.

Thanks for the pictures of Paris. They make me want to visit. I'll have to show them to Marlene.

I am sure your family would love Paris. I was thinking of you and Marlene when I was posting and was wondering whether you would show the pictures to her - her love for France might end up being expensive for your family at some point. ;) I guess she would rather want to chose Paris than New York City for her high school graduation trip... :rolleyes1

:wave2: Hi Rosie! Work is incredibly stressful for over half a year now, so I am even lurkier now than before :)

Still good to see you:hug:

Hi Rosie! Oh, I hope you will have a great time at Universal! Have lots of fun! And you really should go on Forbidden Journey even if you don't go on coasters!!!! It is such a great ride!

I will try to get up the will power to ride !!!:scared1::worship::rotfl2:

Glda to see you back. I understand the work being really busy reason. Somehow I have also not had time to keep up to to date. Work being most of the reason :(

Love the new avatar.

Thask for all the pictures of Paris. A beatuiful city.

I love it when you post pictures of Europe! It makes me want to visit so badly.

The churches/cathedrals look amazing. It's always fascinating to me to see buildings everywhere that are older than pretty much everything in America.

The Musee d'Orsay looks beautiful. I love the fact that it's an old train station--you can definitely see that from the shape of the building.

Are those chocolate croissants I spy in the left of the pastry picture? :goodvibes

Magdalene,

Thank you thank you for posting those pictures!!!:hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug: Paris is my DREAM city to go to..... well you know that already. They are ALL FANTASTIC! Loved the garden pictures and the food I'm drooling looking at them! Thank you again :)

Hi Magdalene,

What a lovely surprise! I am home with a stomach bug and it is so nice to see something so cheering...:goodvibes

I love seeing your photos of Paris...so lovely...

I think that Pompidou is really interesting architectually - I remember reading that Parisians thought it awful at first -it is now one of their most visited sites....I love the Nicki St Phalle fountain in front/off to side...

(David likes modern art and ancient art but not as much in between ... the rest of the family has eclectic tastes...- I love the Orsay because I love Fauvism and the early modern but especially because I love the reuse of the train station into an art museum!!!)

The Luxembourg Gardens are so pretty, how nice it must be to live near enough to walk through them every day :goodvibes... I feel like there are all of these little parks all through the city-some are almost pocket size with just several benches-like little suprises/green spaces...

100_1582.jpg

(This was a little park somewhere on the left bank...)

The Patisseries in Paris amaze me too... the care taken in arranging everything so perfectly... (Portion sizes are definitely a bit smaller than in the patisserie in Epcot...;)

100_1583.jpg

(Since we stayed in an apartment in 2010, Eric would go out and get some things to go with our fruit and yogurt...:goodvibes)

That's one of the things I love so much about Paris-the small details and care put into everyday life...

(I just wanted to share this one--since you said you didn't get too close to the Eiffel Tour... This was right in the middle of it...)

100_1782.jpg

It's like a big erector set...:)

I would love to see your DLP photos...:cloud9:

Love the new avatar.

Life would be much better if we were independently rich and would not have to work... At least there would be more time for the DIS!!

Thanks for the comment about the avatar. It appears to be quite popular! I thought it was getting a bit embarrassing that I still had the generic one...

I love it when you post pictures of Europe! It makes me want to visit so badly.

I am sure you will be able to make it over here at some point! However, don't be deceived into thinking that everything in Europe is older as a lot of what makes up the larger cities was indeed built in the 19th century. At that time a lot of the old medieval cities were being torn down as unfashionable, but also because a lot of these houses were infested with vermin and diseases. That's why Nuremberg used to be an exception. It was so poor from mid 17th century until late 19th century that nobody could afford to build new stuff. And when the city became rich again, there was already a sense of keeping historic buildings for their historic value. It was one of the very few larger medieval cities that had kept a lot of its integrity. However, 90% of the old medieval city were destroyed during an air raid in February 1945. It truly is a shame what a devastation in history and culture (besides all the other atrocities) Nazi Germany caused all over Europe...

Ok - that became a bit heavy... So let's talk about chocolate croissants: Yes! Those are "pain au chocolate" - chocolate bread. A very plain name for something very delicious! There is something about French pastry from France that is unbeatable. I have had many delicious croissants outside of France, but there they always taste even better!

Glad you enjoyed the pictures!! I am sure you will make it to Paris at some point. One thing I found out btw is that August is really vacation months at Paris. Which means that a few shops are closed etc. But it also means that hotels are considerably cheaper! My hotel would have been 30% more in September.

Hi Magdalene,

What a lovely surprise! I am home with a stomach bug and it is so nice to see something so cheering...:goodvibes

I love seeing your photos of Paris...so lovely...

I have no idea how I missed your post! I just read it now for the first time! I am glad that I could cheer you up when you were feeling low!

I remember all the media attention the Centre Pompidou got when it was first opened. It is certainly a peculiar style of architecture. I think the French have an interesting courage for building exceptional buildings. I remember that we noticed that first on our trip to Southern France when I was 14 - there was strange art along the motorway and the rest stop areas where never boring... Sometimes it works out - other times not so much, like the older terminals at CDG which are some of the strangest airport terminals I have ever been to...

I guess I have an eclectic taste in art as well. :goodvibes I am good with a lot of modern art, but can't stand surrealism. Also, some of the real modern stuff I find highly interesting, but then one of Germany's best known modern artists, Beuys, I have no interest in whatsoever...

Yes, I really liked all those small green oasis as well! Which was something that surprised me in New York as well - there was more green than I ever had expected...

The Patisseries in Paris amaze me too... the care taken in arranging everything so perfectly... (Portion sizes are definitely a bit smaller than in the patisserie in Epcot...;)

That's one of the things I love so much about Paris-the small details and care put into everyday life...

I guess the French portion sizes are more conducive for the Parisian women to stay slim... ;)

Actually, that is one of my personal pet peeves about WDW: most snacks have ridiculous portions - at least to me. For example the almond pretzel at the bakery in Norway has caught my eye ever since my first trip. However, it looks like it could substitute a whole meal to me! Same with ice cream portions...

(I just wanted to share this one--since you said you didn't get too close to the Eiffel Tour... This was right in the middle of it...)

It's like a big erector set...:)

Lovely picture!

I am sure that I will manage to get on that tower at some point! This year the lift is under renovation, so only one was operating and that caused a 2-3 hour wait and the tickets on the internet which you could pre-book were sold out for the next 3 or 4 months...

I guess an erector set is a toy? Here in Germany the equivalent is the Märklin Baukasten:

626px-Märklin_neu.jpg

I would love to see your DLP photos...:cloud9:

I was hoping to get the DLP pics up sooner - even started sorting them, but just did not have enough time yet. But I hope you won't have to wait much longer!
