City, Sand, and Savanna - Link to new trip report

I'm so glad Judy and Lauren finally got off their feet and got something to eat. They were making me tired!

They didn't let any grass grow under their feet! 'Course the cement and asphalt of the city doesn't make for very fertile soil for grass either, but you know what I mean.

The food looks good but I was just thinking about how much sodium is in Chinese food. I've been trying to do low sodium and yes once you cut back you really taste the salt in everything.

So true. I had a Nathan's hot dog a week or so ago and it tasted reaally salty. Blech.

I loved that they gave their leftovers to the homeless couple and that they appreciated it too. I have to admit it did cross my mind that it was food they had eaten off, but Judy did have a good point. It is better than out of the dumpster. Have to put things into perspective. It's not like the episode of Seinfeld when George ate the eclair out of the garbage at Susan's parents house.

Thanks for the Seinfeld memory! :rotfl2:

I've never heard of dipping your card. I have lived in the South my entire life and I don't "mash" buttons but I do like mashed potatoes. Believe it or not even the south says different things depending on where in the south you happen to be.

You're right, differences all over. I was in NC when I heard "what button do I mash?"

How very ironic that they ran into the same guy on the train and at the same stop. I have to agree, small world. I was on pins and needles while reading about looking for the parking ticket. That would be something that would happen to me. I always put things in a same place and forget where that safe place is.

Don't tell anyone, but Judy is the worst for that kind of thing. She'll be walking around with her keys in her hand and then walk to the door and go "where are my keys?" :faint: Drives me crazy, but I love her. :)

Ok, ready for the next chapter.

Okay! Now I've just gotta get the chapter ready.

Wow - I really enjoyed reading about the mother-daughter trip to NYC. I haven't been in years and years; I look forward to taking my DD one day when she is older. :lovestruc

:yay: I'm glad you enjoyed it and hope that you get that mother-daughter trip someday. :goodvibes

Thanks Glenn. I am a long term fan (ok, stalker..) of your work.

Stalkers are welcome here Mel! Especially the kind that eventually say 'hi' and join in the fun.

My best friend and I spent 5 days in NYC as our 18th birthday present, and I also spent a portion of my honeymoon there so lots of excellent memories being brought back from Lauren's trip.

Sounds like some great times in NYC for you! I'm glad her little report helped bring back some fond memories for you as well.

I wish her all the best at College, I adored my time at university and if I have one piece of advice, it's to enjoy every minute. The time flies!!!

Thank you! So far, so good. When we talked to her last week she said, "I didn't know that college could be this much fun!" 'Course she was there a week early for marching band practice and hadn't set foot in a class yet, so that first impression could easily change! :lmao: We've texted a little during the week, but we'll probably talk to her tomorrow to catch up on how things are going.

:rotfl2::rotfl2: Someone has to keep Marv in line. :rolleyes1

I thought Rosie was going to do that, but she needs help! :firefight

Fly flap is new for me too.

Jeans with buttons? The opening in a union suit?

I wil still say push instead of mash and even have a hard time with y'all. :lmao: Youse guys flows better off my tongue but I don't break it out much. :rotfl2: I have pretty much retired the YO unless it is urgent or I am going all Ricky Ricardo on somebody. :rotfl2:

Wow, you live in NC and are more prone to saying youse guys than y'all? Be careful or they'll start telling "northerner" jokes about you!

I will wait for Marv to chime in on all the "southernisms" since being born and bred in the South I am sure there are plenty.

popcorn::

I have a whole bunch of northernisms from the uk but I suspect they would all go over your heads! :D

Probably so, but if there are any that are easily explainable we'd love to hear them.

Haha, not mine. I'm from ooop north too x

I saw a kid on Youtube who did twenty-some different accents. His language was pretty foul, but the accents were amazing. He was from the UK and several of them were from different regions there. When he did some U.S. ones, I thought "now that sounds normal!"

Yes!! Good catch Dee!

Off the Mark? Love that comic strip.

No, The Far Side by Gary Larson.

Glenn, I just can't find the time to reply to all my subscribed threads at the moment (disappearing to Paris for several days did not help in that matter either... :cool2:). But I have been reading along and enjoyed Lauren's TR about NYC very much!

Now I am very excited to read about Vero Beach as I am considering adding a few days there next spring and that 7 months window will be opening late this months... So hopefully your TR will cover it just in time!! ;)

Just got caught up on all of the NYC excitement! What a fantastic trip for just the two of them.

Very jealous they got to see Kleinfeld, and a real-life encounter with Randy! He's my favorite.

Thanks for this great little trip report! Now... on to Disney?!?!

Been working, so finally got to read and comment!! That Chinese food looks SO good!! Yumm! How cool that you shared the wealth with the couple on the street! I love that idea and will borrow it. I hope you don't mind!

I know the world is actually small, also with technology it grows smaller by the day, but oh my goodness, what are the odds that you all would have been at the today show, left NY on the same train and got off at the same stop?! Kind of boggles the mind! Very cool!!

Great trippie Lauren and thank you for sharing it with us!! Looking forward to FL!

Jeans with buttons? The opening in a union suit?

Exactly!!!:lmao:

Wow, you live in NC and are more prone to saying youse guys than y'all? Be careful or they'll start telling "northerner" jokes about you!

Being that I am recently able to say that I have spent more time in NC than NY, it is safe to say there is quite a bit of NY still left in me. :lmao:

Not over mine :goodvibes:lmao: Some innocent ones might be **** out though !!!:rotfl2::rotfl2: Why don't you give them a try . Let Marv guess what they mean. He already knows about the Wooden Spoon Award :lmao::lmao:

Don't you worry about that for one minute Magdalene. I know you'll participate here when you can. I'm glad that you've been able to read along though! :goodvibes

I can't guarantee that, but feel free to PM me any questions that you might have. I answered several for eandesmom while we were there.

Just got caught up on all of the NYC excitement! What a fantastic trip for just the two of them.

They had a blast, as I think was evident in the write-up.

Very jealous they got to see Kleinfeld, and a real-life encounter with Randy! He's my favorite.

Seeing the store was a must-do for Lauren; seeing Randy was a bonus!

Thanks for this great little trip report! Now... on to Disney?!?!

The next trip segment will be Disney's Vero Beach resort, and then on to Disney. ;)

Been working, so finally got to read and comment!!

:yay: (that you got to comment, not that you had to work)

That Chinese food looks SO good!! Yumm! How cool that you shared the wealth with the couple on the street! I love that idea and will borrow it. I hope you don't mind!

Don't mind at all...please do!

I know the world is actually small, also with technology it grows smaller by the day, but oh my goodness, what are the odds that you all would have been at the today show, left NY on the same train and got off at the same stop?! Kind of boggles the mind! Very cool!!

That was pretty crazy, huh? I'm surprised they didn't run into any of my NYC TR readers!

Great trippie Lauren and thank you for sharing it with us!! Looking forward to FL!

Thanks ShortStuff!

Being that I recently able to say that I have spent more time in NC than NY, it is safe to say there is quite a bit of NY still left in me. :lmao:

I remember moving to NC and finding out there were all these "northerner" jokes that I had no idea were being told all this time.

Why don't you give them a try . Let Marv guess what they mean. He already knows about the Wooden Spoon Award :lmao::lmao:

Yeah, let's hear 'em.

Here are a couple of words from around the north that I've heard...

Parmo
Nowt (an easy one)
Gizza (also easy)
Radge
Tankin down
Jammy (not the fruit version either)
Maftin
Baltic
Claggy
Beck
Bray

Not sure how common those are outside the NE of England mind.:) I'll post answers if people are stumped.

popcorn::popcorn::popcorn::popcorn:: Bet I'll score high in this one:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Finally a game that plays to your strengths!! :cool1:

These are awesome! I don't know a single one! Now, it looks like that with Google I can find most of them, but I'd like to hear your definition. And of course Baltic and Beck have many, more prominent google results, so it's hard to find those.

Thanks for posting those!

I was looking for an opportunity to post some pictures from another excursion I took over to Longwood Gardens to photograph their "Lights" exhibits. Since we're in-between the New York City and Vero Beach portions of the trip report, it seems like a perfect time for a little Intermission.

In an earlier post I gave you a link to Longwood Gardens, and as you can imagine it's known for all of the beautiful plants, fountains, and um, gardens. But anyway, this year somebody came up with the fantastic idea to have an artist, Bruce Munro, put up different light exhibits Longwood Lights link. We visited it a month or so ago and I took a monopod along, but even with that, the long shutter speeds required to get good pictures usually resulted in blurry pictures. So, I went back about a week ago with a tripod, to try again. I thought you might like to see the results.

I started out in a forest area, where it got dark first, at about 7:30. The shutter for this picture was open for about a third of a second.

IMG_7307.jpg

You can see that they put out oodles of these things, glass balls with a light filament inside.

IMG_7334.jpg

I did a little bit of tweaking on Intagram (follow me -- glennbo123) with that last one.

Then I hustled over to a pond where they had a bunch more of those same lights.

IMG_7344.jpg

I did some Instagram-tweaking to one I took which was similar to that last one:

A45E92FB-E807-4848-BC49-6EBFDDCC8B28-4394-000006F4CBD94C09.jpg

Then I went over to the meadow, where they had these stacks of water bottles with lights inside that change color. I know it's hard to imagine with just that description, so as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. And in this case, that's a bargain!

IMG_7389.jpg

By this point, I had to leave the shutter open for over 3 seconds, so the tripod was a must.

IMG_7363.jpg

Now it was time to get creative...how could I get a portrait of myself with these things? The shutter had to be open 3+ seconds to get lights and their beautiful color, but it wouldn't illuminate me. If I used the flash, it washed out the color of the lights. So I devised a plan to use the flashlight app on my iPhone, which I held out to the side, to douse myself with a little light. I held my thumb over the light and just uncovered it for a split-second and then covered it back up again. Then got up when the camera shutter closed. It took lots and lots of attempts to get a good shot, but it was a fun experiment.

IMG_7367.jpg

Oh, and I'm sure I looked pretty crazy doing it, because other people were walking around, admiring the lights also. I heard one guy say, "Oh, do you see what he's doing? He's putting just enough light on himself to be in the picture." So, maybe I didn't look too crazy.

I put a couple of these shots into Instagram to play around with them. Did I mention you can follow me on Instagram? I'm glennbo123 on there also.

I probably should have shaved that day. Oh well, I didn't realize I was going to be doing a photo shoot!

Then I moved further away to try to capture the whole exhibit of the meadow lights.

IMG_7395-1.jpg

I couldn't quite get the focus right for that one, but at least it gives you a sense for the exhibit.

But the focus was just about right for playing around with my iPhone flashlight trick...

IMG_7403.jpg

Then I headed for the exit, but just as I was about to leave I heard that there was a fountain show that just started. These were the big fountains, not the smaller ones that were in my earlier post. So I went over to get some more pictures. It went on for about 20 minutes, so I took a bunch of pictures of these, but they're not really all that different so I'll just give you a couple.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed our Intermission!

Up next: Travel Day
Not quite! First an Intermission Part 2

Fun intermission! We have something similar over the holidays and my attempts at pictures were disastrous. I have really got to learn to use the manual settings on my camera...I think the fact that the iphone takes decent pictures has not helped me progress in that area.

I'm following you....:rotfl:

Very creative and ingeneous way to use the flashlight app on your phone to be able to get yourself in those pictures! Glad you thought ahead to have the tripod with you. The reflections in the water, and the fountain pic are :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2
