No Sleep Till Brooklyn! WDW Road Trip July 2012! UPDATE 8/31/12 (DHS!)

Awesome! The Comfort Suites is a very nice hotel. What part of Rockland County? I have cousins in New City.

We're in New City all the time. We're actually in Chestnut Ridge, which is right next to Montvale, NJ. I love "meeting" other NYers who do the drive! :) although usually we drive to my parents' house in The Villages, near Ocala, and then travel from there.

It's always nice to do something else for a little bit after doing the big drive down, before heading to WDW. We have always gone somewhere else in Florida before getting to WDW. However, this time it didn't feel as relaxing because we went to 2 theme parks the 2 days before we got to WDW! (Busch Gardens and Legoland). We're talking about doing Tampa again next time to visit my friend again, but spending more time with them and only doing Legoland and not Busch Gardens. So maybe doing Legoland one day, then just relaxing with our friends and going to the beach in Clearwater the second day, so we can have a less hectic day before arriving at WDW. Is it crazy that I am already thinking about the planning for our July 2014 trip? :rotfl2:

Bangzoom - the continuation of your trip report is super. :thumbsup2 keep it coming..:)

great update and pics.

I have not been to Busch Gardens since my grandma had a heart attack there in the early 80's. I do need to go back.

It is so nice when you get together with old friends. Great time of the year for them to visit here.

After Eric & Philip got off the Sand Serpent and had some water (I get crazy and make everyone drink constantly!), the boys enjoyed some more of the kiddie rides together. Then, we stopped to snack a little, since we had such a big breakfast and weren't hungry enough for a full lunch. We each had a serving of Dippin' Dots, the ice cream and ices that are in little...well...dots, so your ice cream doesn't drip all over the place. Jonathan and Eric each had chocolate, and Philip and I both went with the rainbow ice flavor. It was very refreshing. Then, it was time for ICEploration, the ice skating show at Busch Gardens. This show was amazing, and a very nice indoor break from the early afternoon heat! What beautiful performances by everyone in it! They even had an "elephant" on ice skates...Jonathan thought it was a real elephant, shhhh! ;) Here's a photo I managed to get, though not the greatest pic...I had to delete a lot of them because they came out very blurry:

My sister-in-law is the same way about drinking water. We call her "the queen of hydration".

We did Legoland with my then 3 year old son and my parents when we flew down for a trip in February. It was okay. Not wonderful. We're hitting Sea World and Clearwater Beach this time. My 6 year old daughter is so excited about Sea World and mom wants the beach! (I'm a NJ shore transplant)

And...um...I didn't just say anything to my husband about Beach Club club level late July/early August 2012. Nope. We'll have another by then (I'm due at the end of January) so LO will be about 18 months by then and FREE! LOL

Enjoying the report a lot! So sorry the Embassy Suites didn't do a good job. I'd also mention your issues on TripAdvisor since I know I do look at reviews on that site.

Sounds like a great day! But you guys wear me out just reading about it!!! :rotfl: Are you saving the food porn for you dining report or did you only do it at Disney?

I wish Alicia was joining in over here. I'm really worried about her after the last update. I'm thinking I should really check in since she hasn't been online for a while...we've had some challenging times too.

You got it! Legoland in a little while! ;)

I had told my friends that the holiday season is the best time to visit NY. Can't wait!

Oh yes, I always worry about everyone getting enough water, especially in Florida in the summer heat. I have been like that since our first trip in 2008. I was super nervous then because the kids were so little. But thank goodness everything worked out! :thumbsup2

Wow, congrats on your upcoming little one! On our first WDW trip my little guy was 14 months old and it was so nice that he was free and we still got to take him on so many rides. Back then we had the dining plan, and he was free at all the character meals too (we did a lot of them!). By the next trip he was already 3 so regular kids' price but I say it's all well worth it!

Beach Club is a beautiful resort...never stayed there but have been inside. And we love the Epcot resort area, very convenient, especially with little ones! :thumbsup2

I only did food porn at Disney. I am going to start a dining review today, and post a link to it on here. :thumbsup2

I'm sorry you guys are facing come challenging times over there. And I have to look at Alicia's last update too. I hope everyone is doing all right. Keeping all of you in my thoughts and prayers. :grouphug:

:wave2:Good morning everyone! :wave2:

And now...to continue my trip report with an exciting day at Legoland Florida!

(Can you tell they were excited to go there?!)

We started out with a nice breakfast once again at the Embassy Suites. Once again, I had an egg white omelette with veggies, some grits, a couple of pieces of bacon (can't resist bacon!), and some pineapple and watermelon. The kids ate a smaller breakfast this time, so Eric and I decided we would definitely have to stop for lunch with them at Legoland and not just snack around.

We had a nice, peaceful drive to Legoland that Sunday morning. The parking was great too, not too far from the entrance at all! :thumbsup2 Of course we got there at opening time (10am), so I don't know how it is later in the day, but in the morning it was terrific. We walked into the park, and Eric took the boys to the rest room right away of course! All the statues in the park are made of Legos (of course!) and the boys were totally enthralled by it all! We spotted this one, and the boys had to take their pic with it:

We took a ride on their sky ride, which shows you the whole park. Beautiful views! This park used to be Cypress Gardens, the first theme park in Florida, and they talk about this on the ride. The boys enjoyed seeing all the things they wanted to do!

After the sky ride, we were heading to some other rides, and the boys spotted some familiar...umm...faces...outside a gift shop! ;)

I will continue in my next post...this one got a little messed up...it posted, I had to edit and then it logged me out...UGH!!! :headache:

And now, it was time for some rides! We went to some of the kiddie rides. The boys enjoyed them, and Eric took them on the kiddie coaster which they all loved.

After these rides, we went to a Fire Safety Show. This was a lot of fun! Jonathan didn't want to get wet but Philip did, so I sat with Philip in the front row (splash zone!) and Eric sat with Jonathan a few rows back. The show was very cute and it felt good to get wet! Philip and I were laughing the whole time. Jonathan was laughing at us from where he was sitting...we all had a great time at the show!

Then, it was time for the Ford Driving School in the back of the park. They have 2 different ones: the Junior one, for ages 3-5, where they simply drive laps around a few times; and the regular one, for ages 6+ (I think up to age 12), where they learn stop signs, traffic lights, intersections, and get to drive on a 2-way street. First we brought Jonathan to the Junior one, where he had a good time and was very happy to receive his own Driver's License:

We took Philip to the regular Ford Driving School. He enjoyed learning about driving, and he paid attention to all the stop signs, traffic lights, turned very well, and stayed on the correct side of the "street"! He also was happy to get his own Driver's License!

Right near the Ford Driving School is the Flight School Roller Coaster. This is a bigger coaster, and Jonathan was not tall enough for it. Philip and Eric went on together. Jonathan was a little upset but I calmed him down. It's a coaster where your feet dangle and it is supposed to feel like you are flying. Philip and Eric both loved it!

Afterwards, we went to a boat ride where you steer the boat yourself. They allow the kids to do this, so I went with Philip and Eric went with Jonathan. It was so much fun! We went around in circles a couple of times but we made it to the end. While in line, the boys said they were hungry. After the boat ride, we stopped for lunch. Philip and Jonathan wanted to see one of the 4D shows, so we stopped at a sandwich shop on the way. It was not crowded at all, it was indoor seating and a very nice break. They had pre-packaged sandwiches but they were very good. The boys each had turkey and cheese, I had an avocado wrap, and Eric had a roast beef wrap. We got a table right away and ate our lunch. Then, we headed to the 4D show.

They have different 4D shows in the same theater throughout the day. The boys wanted to see the one that involved some wizards, so we took them to that one. Philip loved it and so did Jonathan at first, but he got scared a little while into it and closed his eyes. Afterwards he said he liked it though.

After the show, there were a few things left to do: Miniland USA, the Factory Tour at the front of the park, and the section where you get to build things with Legos (but you can't keep them, it's just for fun). We stopped at Miniland USA, where they have different parts of the country replicated in Legos. This was amazing! They had NYC, Florida, Kennedy Space Center, Daytona, San Francisco, Hollywood, Washington DC, and Las Vegas. Here's some of NYC:

After Miniland USA, Eric and I wanted to try Granny's Fries. This is a snack stand that serves a snack unique to Legoland. They are granny smith apple fries. They take a granny smith apple, and make it into fries (just like a potato), toss them in cinnamon sugar and serve them with vanilla dip. The boys had no interest in trying them, so we got one order to share. These were delicious! The only tiny disappointment was that the vanilla dip was just whipped cream, which melted as soon as you dipped the fry into it. I was expecting more of an icing. But the fries were delicious without any dip and we really enjoyed them!

The next thing we did was head to the area where kids can build their own creations with legos. The boys wanted to go into the super hero section, where they get to create their own unique super hero. The employee explains to the kids before going in, that they don't get to keep them. It's good they do this, to prevent any major meltdowns and disappointment for kids who expect to keep them. The boys understood. On the way, there was a beautiful fountain and there was an employee taking professional photos there. I asked her to take a pic of the 4 of us with our own camera, and she kindly did just that.

Then, we headed to the super hero section with the boys, and they had a lot of fun building, and so did Eric!!

After building their super heroes, the last thing to do was the factory Tour, which was right by the front of the park, not too crowded and so we decided to save it for last. We got to briefly see how they make Legos and the boys thought it was pretty cool. Once we got into the gift shop, it started pouring outside. We waited until it let up a bit, then we stepped outside under the awning. I went into the bag to break out the ponchos, but there were only 3 of them. Eric realized that he left his in the hotel by accident. We put the boys' ponchos on, I put mine on, and we waited it out a few minutes, since it started pouring again. When it let up a little, we made a beeline for the next covered area, not too far away, and right by the exit. Then it started coming down hard again, for just a few minutes though. Once it let up a bit, we made a beeline for the exit and walked fast but carefully to the car.

We got back to the hotel, and I was very pleased to see that the room had been cleaned, and there were enough towels for everyone to shower. We all showered a relaxed for a little bit. Eric had originally suggested that we go to the Sweet Tomatoes right by the hotel for dinner, so it would be quick and more relaxing. For those of you who are not familiar with it, Sweet Tomatoes is a salad buffet that also have soups, breads and desserts. Lots of healthy food, and a very reasonable price. We go there every time we go to Florida.

We had a nice relaxing dinner, and then we went to the complimentary happy hour at the hotel. Embassy Suites all do this every evening. They have certain drinks you can get from the bar for free from, if I recall correctly, 5:30 to 7:30pm. They also have light snacks but we didn't need this after dinner. We got there about 20 minutes before it ended. The drink choices were 2 types of draft beer, 3 kinds of wine, a few different liquors and you could get one mixer with the liquor. Eric had rum and diet coke and I had a glass of white zinfandel. The boys each got a glass of juice. We went into the main lobby area and sat on the comfy chairs. It was very nice.

After the happy hour, we went back to the room, and got the kids ready for bed. Then, Eric and I got everything in order for WDW the following day!! :cool1:

We were glad it would only be a little over an hour drive to get to WDW the next day. We decided we would go to breakfast fairly early and get to WDW early so we could enjoy the day there.

Next up: our first day at WDW! Stay tuned... ;)

Hi , loving your trippie. You are so lucky being able to drive through your beautiful country, our journey to florida is 9 hours on a plane !

Your boys are gorgeous , Legoland looks such fun, my two boys are too old now for Legoland , they are 18 and 15 years but if it had been there when they were young they would have loved it.

Loving your trippie , you made me laugh tho when you described walking in the rain to the car , ever the teacher !!!

looking forward to more .

Thank you so much for all your compliments, especially about my boys!!! We all really loved Legoland and we are definitely returning when we go back to Florida in 2014!

We always get caught a few times in the rain on our WDW trips...it makes us laugh too, while we are in it and especially looking back at it! We try to laugh with the kids at the time it is happening to prevent meltdowns, and we make some fun of the situation. So we all laughed hysterically! I am happy there was no crying involved. :thumbsup2

Yes, we are very lucky to have the time to drive to Florida. I know some people think we are crazy, it's easier and faster to just hop on a plane, but we do enjoy the drive, with or without the mishaps. We now laugh at that first day and the adventures we encountered. And we will always have a funny memory from it! :rotfl2: Hey, gotta think positive, right?! :thumbsup2

Disney and florida is all about the family moments and memories, I think anyway.
We are going back next year staying at OKW for 2 weeks and so looking forward to it, having to go in July tho , usually go in sept or oct in the past but cant now as my hubbie is college lecturer.

Some of the funniest times for us was travelling from different places in orlando, getting used to the north/ south/ west and east directions. As in Scotland you can only go so far before you would fall into the sea ! , so we quite often go for a magical mystery tour accidently whilst in orlando. Fun though!

Joined your dining thread too , been to a few places you have chosen too ,

thanks again for your reviews.

Flying is not always easier! My husband is terribly afraid of flying so driving is SO much easier for us, especially with all of the security issues and other things now.

I'm going to check out your dining review now - I've been reading that section and drooling all day!

I'm with you, the family memories are what vacationing is all about for us! Especially at WDW! We were considering going to dinner alone one night and bringing the boys to one of the kids' programs, maybe at the Beach Club. But then we thought to ourselves...they are still young, we have many trips ahead of us, and they still want to spend time with us! Perhaps we will do something just the 2 of us on our next WDW trip, but who knows...I am just glad we did everything with them this time! :)

It's so funny that you have adventures traveling through Orlando every time you go! I know all about vacation adventures, trust me.

Going in July isn't so bad. Yes, it's hot. Yes, it's humid. Yes, it tends to rain in the afternoon. But, the good thing is that if you get to the parks early and have a good plan, you can be out of there by 1 or 2:00, take a nice swimming or nap break at your hotel, and return in the evening when it is not as hot. Eric surprised me and timed all our waits on his cell phone while we were there, and at the end of the trip the longest we waited for any attraction was 16 minutes! So, it can be done! :thumbsup2

I agree about flying. First of all, I am also afraid of flying, even though I have done it several times. The last time was in 2000 so I didn't even experience the security issues of today. Then if the flight is delayed, how do you entertain kids? When I was 8 years old, we took our first flight to Florida that was scheduled to take off at 8am. There were complications, they scratched the flight, we had to take a bus from JFK to LaGuardia Airport, and then the new plane came in with a flat tire and was delayed further. We ended up with a total of a 6-hour delay. I can tell you that as an 8-year-old kid, I wasn't a happy camper and neither was my sister (she was 10). I'm sure it was no picnic for my parents either. So, I am just fine with driving, turning on a DVD player for the kids and just going! Of course car troubles do happen, as we experienced on day 1, but they do say that getting there is half the fun, right?! ;)

Really enjoying your trip report!

We went to Washington DC this summer and stopped in the same Comfort Suites in Florence! Fabulous hotel!

I'm late but here!

I didn't even get to say goodbye before you left and here you are already into the third page of your TR! :scared1:

Just got caught up and my you guys had some amazing days already! You've been taking some great pics btw.

Sorry to read about your DS. Hopefully he's feeling better.

I have to interject at this point to say I am really enjoying your writing style. Very entertaining, and your description and imagery makes me feel like I am there!

Loving your trip report. I was amused to see that you stopped in my neck of the woods to spend the night on the trip down. We're a good halfway point for New Yorkers. ;)
I was also interested to see the Po Folks. I haven't seen one of those in years.
