OFFICIAL Disney Cake Chatter Thread - Part III

After lurking on this thread for awhile and looking through all the pictures, I decided I had to order a cake for my little brothers high school graduation celebration. The cake was ordered through the Yacht Club, and I ordered a 6" chocolate cake with white buttercream icing. Cakes final cost after tax / delivery was about $66. My little brother likes Star Wars and Vinylmation pins / figures, so I gave them that idea, as well as the images. I assumed they were just going to do an edible image, but they said they could do 2D images with white chocolate. Here is what they came up with...

My family said the cake was very tasty. Disney also surprised them with a white chocolate Mickey statue, and 4 tuxedo strawberries. :wizard:

I love that! The little star wars vinylmation figures are SO cute!

I really appreciate the recent posts about POFQ delivery! DH and I are staying at POFQ in October for our second wedding anniversary. I'd really like to have a mini-recreation of our wedding cake, seen here:

I really only want one layer with a purple border at the bottom and a pumpkin on top, which seems simple enough to me. I'd originally planned on having it delivered to our room at POFQ, but reading about the hassle dealing with both Boatwright's and Boardwalk Bakery has me questioning this.

It really wouldn't be an issue to have the cake presented at a restaurant, if it would make everything more seamless. Right now, we have an ADR on our first night for dinner at Kona Cafe, which is serviced by GF bakery, right? Since they specialize in wedding cakes, would ordering the cake here be a better option?

I also read so much about Brian at the Contemporary that I'm wondering if that's how we should go. I wouldn't have any issue switching to a reservation somewhere at CR for cake delivery.

I guess I'm just trying to figure out who would make this cake the BEST, with the simplest ordering process and best price? And no matter which restaurant we go with, each bakery DOES provide a nice sturdy box and bag for your transport back to your resort, right?

As promised here is a picture of our anniversary cake:

As I said before it was a version of the Mickey's Delight cake with a hand painted Mickey and Minnie chocolate topper and a few extra red roses. The cake was vanilla with raspberry mousse filling to replicate our original wedding cake flavors. It was ordered for last Friday night after our dinner at the California Grill and ended up costing me $85. I did get to use my Tables in Wonderland on both the meal and cake.

Overall, the process went better than expected. The cake turned out great and tasted pretty darn good as well. They said it would serve approx 4 people, but the two of us have been eating it now (very large slices) for 3 straight nights so it could easily serve more than that. In addition, they brought out a complimentary piece of their chocolate cake (we ended up taking the entire anniversary cake home since we live within an hour), which I must admit was just as good or probably better tasting than the anniversary cake!

I love your cake! I showed it to my DH hoping he'll get the hint. ;) We're planning on going to the F&WF after our 20th anniversary cruise. I'll have to bring the cake up a few more times, until he gets a clue.

The Contemporary trumps the GF for simplest ordering process and best price. (The act of placing the order at the GF isn't hard, but it seems there are more communication issues that can make the process frustrating.) Because your cake design is so simple, I don't think quality of execution would be an issue for either bakery. Cakes arrive at the restaurant in a standard bakery box—I wouldn't exactly call it sturdy... it looks like this:

You might have to hit one of the lobby shops for a bag.

Thank you SO much, especially for the pic! :thumbsup2 Think I'll definitely aim for a CR cake...might switch our dinner ADR to CG...the last time we ate there was on our honeymoon so it would be pretty appropriate for an anniversary cake!

I know at this point it will be speculation but since CR bakery services the MK restaurants I think it is safe to assume it will provide the cakes for Be Our Guest once it opens? I am just trying to get a plan for your next trip.

I really want to order a cake to celebrate completing my first RunDisney Half Marathon but DH will never get the hit no matter how many times I mention it so I guess I am going to have to wait until our next whole family trip for another cake.

I'd mention that on the reservation even! ;)

Yes. :thumbsup2

I need cake advice!!!

I want to order a specialty cake celebrating our wedding/honeymoon for our trip in December, but I'm not sure what meal to couple it with.

Give a clueless groom some advice!

Here's our ADRs:

12/3 Ohana dinner
12/4
12/5 California Grill dinner
12/6 Le Cellier lunch
12/7
12/8
12/9 Raglan Road dinner
12/10 Beirgarten lunch
12/11 Kona Cafe breakfast
12/12 Jiko dinner
12/13 Trails End dinner
12/14 Ohana breakfast

We can add dinners on the 4th and 8th if we need to. We can't on the 7th since it's our All-Harry Potter day :lmao:

I was thinking I have a custom cake prepared for the California Grill dinner, but we love the desserts there usually, I'm afraid it would be too much. And forget about Ohana, because seriously, no cake ON EARTH is as delicious as that bread pudding.

What to do!?!?

I would do Cali Grill because Brian is amazing or I would consider Le Cellier since I think YC/BC makes the cake there and those tend to turn out really well!! Congrats and I think this is amazing you are planning this. I wish DH would try something like this.

OK, if Ohana and CA Grill are out, then your next best bet is the Trails End dinner, because the Contemporary would be making your cake.

Raglan Road isn't serviced by Disney, Biergarten just gets Epcot's dull cakes, Le Cellier is one of the places Yacht & Beach Club delivers to but the process can be like pulling teeth, Kona is serviced by the GF but cake at breakfast might be weird for some... (some who are not me! :teeth: )

Also, if you're staying at a Disney resort you can have the cake delivered to your room if that's easier. See Post 2 for options by location.

I'd go with Trails End, but that doesn't have quite the same romantic flair to it as CG. Haha.

Maybe I'll just skip dessert at CG and do the cake there. It seems like Chef Brian has a lot of fans, and the setting is the most romantic of the options.

Unfortunately, (well, for this reason anyway,) we are staying at Bonnet Creek, so the cake in room isn't an option.

CG would be my choice as well. Not only would the cake be made at the Contemporary bakery, but you would get it early enough in your trip to snack on for several days.

Since you're staying at Bonnet Creek, you could also look into off site bakeries. I've seen a few really nice cakes from offsite. BTW, I don't know where you're staying but Hilton & Waldorf Astoria BC are both very nice hotels.

What is the email or phone number for Chef Brian. I want to order a b'day cake for my sister on 8/9 and we are going to be at the Luau at the Polynesian. We went a couple of years ago for my b'day and Chef Brian did a beautiful Cinderella cake for me at California Grill. My husband does not have the contact info and Disney said they could not give it to me. Does anyone have that info. I wanted to see if I could get her a cake with polynesian flowers and the chocolate monorail, since she loves both. Thanks.

Chef Brian works at the Contemporary, which does not service the Polynesian. You would have to order from the Grand Floridian. Call the number for Private Dining listed in Post #2 of this thread.

If you want a cake from the Contemporary, but not on Cali Grill night, you could add an ADR at The Wave on one of your other available nights.

Depending on the size of your cake, make sure you have plenty of time to eat it! Many people take it back to their room and finish it over a number of days.

Haha, the way I eat when we're at Disney, I don't think this will be a problem.

Plus, I'm thinking I might want a smaller cake, it's just the two of us. More the thought than the actual dessert, I think.

I'm taking my son for his Fifth birthday to whispering pines for supper. Since there is only two of us I'm hesitant to order a cake. Would you order one or is there a special dessert i can order him?

We are having breakfast at Tusker House that day too, might be too early in day for cake:)
