Who Invited My Mother In Law? A Moderately Deluxe TR All New X 3 & PTR Link 2/3 !!

Phew!! I am caught up! :woohoo:

Loving your TR!!! I am so glad that it is underway - it is like being back in WDW just a tiny bit myself. :thumbsup2

Looks like your DD is having a ball. I am having so much fun seeing her visit some of our favorite characters and places and getting to see some of the new FL stuff with her! :woohoo:

So, tell me, does Maddie feel the need to visit the same princesses again and again and again?????? DD blows me away with that - I mean, do you know how many times we met Belle last year??? And Cinderella??? And Snow White??? And Aurora??? :rotfl2:

After a 20 minute wait our bus pulled up and took us to Epcot. None of us had ever been there for Flower and Garden Festival before and we were excited to take it all in-particularly MiL who loves gardening almost as much as she loves Mickey Mouse.

As we moseyed into the park Maddie declared that she needed to see some characters so we decided that Bryan would run over to the Land to score us some Soarin’ FP to use later while MiL, Maddie, and I got in line at the Character Spot. We didn’t make it all the way there before MiL stopped at some shops and kiosks to find some Crocs for my niece and nephew. We settled on a blue pair that had light up Mickeys for my nephew, but they didn’t have my niece’s size in the pink ones. MiL said she’d need to check Mousegears for them before we left Epcot. By this point even Maddie was growing impatient with MiL’s shopping and was starting to get irritable, so I tried to hustle MiL along.

Soon enough we made our way into the Character Spot.

IMG_3257.jpg

The wait time was posted at 30 minutes and it took every second of that for it to be our turn. While we were in line Maddie stood slack jawed watching old Mickey cartoons while I reinstalled the Draw Something app that had been giving me trouble. Just before we went in, Bryan arrived with FPs with a return time of 8pm. Maddie took pics with Mickey solo first, and then MiL jumped in too.

After we’d sated Maddie’s hunger for photo ops we made our way toward World Showcase. MiL wanted to browse the F&G merch, and we’d promised her a late birthday gift from the festival as well.

IMG_3326.jpg

IMG_3329.jpg

We browsed for a bit, but MiL wasn’t ready to commit. While we were looking, Maddie began whining to spend some of the money she’d brought from home. I don’t like to make excuses for her behavior, but on this day I wasn’t surprised. All day long she’d heard about what her cousins were getting from grandma. I’m not surprised that she was itching to buy herself something special as well. I took her aside and had a little talk with her while MiL finished up.

IMG_3337.jpg

We made our way to Mousegears so that MiL and Maddie could blow some cash. Maddie was having a very hard time deciding whether to buy herself a Baby Lady stuffed animal or a “little Minnie” toy complete with a dozen tiny outfits and even tinier accessories. MiL stepped in and offered to buy her the Minnie toy, and we made good on the Stitch stuffed guy we’d promised at AK that morning, so for the time being Maddie was a very happy little girl. Bryan and I browsed a bit knowing that we would do the majority of our souvenir shopping when we visited DTD, and then we followed MiL around for the next 40 minutes while she shopped.

By then Maddie was in dire need of a snack so we set off in search of some popcorn for her. I got myself a pretzel (which Maddie ate most of) while we looked.

IMG_3345.jpg

At the popcorn cart we realized that we’d stumbled upon the F&G Festival Center. If you’re guessing that we went in there for some more shopping, you’d be right. It was about 4:30 at this point and the area closed at 5:00 so we had to act quickly. MiL treated herself to almost all of the garden accessories offered (she works really hard and never buys herself anything so I certainly didn’t begrudge her any of it.) They had some really cute stuff, a Tinkerbell wind chime, Mickey gazing ball, welcome stones with Mickey and Minnie, etc. I ended up just giving MiL some cash toward her purchase since she’d gotten everything she wanted. We left the area at 5:00 pm with the CMs locking the doors behind us.

IMG_3352.jpg

IMG_3355.jpg

While Maddie munched on her popcorn, we sat down on a bench to figure out what to do next. We only had an hour before we’d need to leave the park to make our way toward our dinner destination, but we thought we’d squeeze in at least one ride. The group settled on Nemo so we made our way toward the Seas. On the way Maddie said that she was cold and when Bryan stopped walking to get her hoodie out of the backpack that he was carrying, MiL nastily said “She gets cold when the slightest breeze touches her?” I believe that Bryan said something to the effect of “Don’t you think it’s easier to give her the jacket to wear than question why she’s says she’s cold?” That shut MiL up for a few minutes, but then we got to the Seas.

IMG_3367.jpg

As we queued up for Nemo (of course we were the only ones in line) Maddie started to freak out. She said that she was afraid of the Bruce part of the ride. MiL very loudly started mocking her fear “Oh my God, you’ve got to be kidding me. It’s Nemo for God’s sake! What can she possibly be afraid of?!?”

Well, she looked like she was about to cry. I’m sure that most of you are now yelling at your computer screens “Okay Shannon, this is the point at which you say something to her, right? Who cares how much you hate confrontation! No body talks to your kid like that! Right Shannon? Right?”

Nope, instead I scooped up my kid and talked quietly to her about how we’d approach the ride. It was decided that I would tell Maddie when to close her eyes to avoid the “scary” parts and then tell her when it was safe to uncover them as well. She didn’t want to miss the fun parts, just wasn’t prepared to brave Bruce up close and personal.

And as for MiL? Well, I figured that if I called attention to MiL’s nasty behavior in front of Maddie that would have made Mads feel worse. And also, by acting that way, I knew that she had begun to dig her own grave. Maddie was not going to want to spend any time one on one with Mean Grandma. She’d essentially just sabotaged her own chance to enjoy WDW with her oldest grandchild. Maddie wasn’t cold or even that afraid of Bruce, she was tired. And, sometimes 5 year olds have a hard time explaining what they’re really feeling. Apparently 55 year olds have that same problem sometimes too.

Maddie and I rode Nemo doing just what we’d planned and Maddie loved it. She wanted to see Turtle Talk with Crush next (we obviously weren’t going to be partaking in the Bruce photo op). We had just enough time to see the show, so we headed in to wait. It was cute as usual, and Maddie loved it. I was a little surprised (and secretly relieved) that Maddie didn’t attempt any questions for Crush. I had visions of her telling a made-up knock- knock joke.

IMG_3376.jpg

IMG_3377.jpg

Oh Dory.

IMG_3379.jpg

After the show we made our way to the front of the park. I don’t think that I’d spoken to MiL since the “incident”, Bryan was visibly tense, and Maddie was tired and still showing signs of hurt from the run-in with grandma. Dinner was going to be fun!!

Yay! I'll bet you're used to all the stuff we do!

She was having a blast! She's been planning our next trip since we got back. :rotfl:

Oh yes, we meet them over and over and over. On this trip I think we met Belle, Cindy, Aurora, and Jasmine 5 times. Mickey and Minnie? 4 times. I totally feel your pain!

We have never been in the Epcot Character Spot. Is that the one that requires you to be a Disney Visa cardholder? I have considered getting that card, but I have not done so yet. Crap and I already have so many cards. If I close another one, I will finally apply for a Disney Visa. Thirty minutes does not seem bad considering she got to meet all characters for that 30 minute wait. We waited longer than that several times last trip for one or two characters at once (Buzz with Woody, Phineas with Ferb, etc).

The Flower and Garden Festival looks beautiful. We have never been during that time of year. With Xander starting school now, I wonder if we ever will. Hopefully, one day we’ll make it. Your MIL sure shops a lot. I am glad she finally got something for Maddie (and herself too). All of the items your MIL bought sound lovely. I would love to have the stepping stones in particular, but I doubt Crap would allow it.

“Maddie wasn’t cold or even that afraid of Bruce, she was tired. And, sometimes 5 year olds have a hard time explaining what they’re really feeling. Apparently 55 year olds have that same problem sometimes too.” I was thinking the exact same thing based on the comments she was making. Seems like something was irritating her. Too bad she took it out on Maddie.

You have been so patient with her. I think everyone will be happier when she leaves as terrible as that sounds.

Character Spot is just the character area next to Club Cool. It's really cute inside! 30 minutes wasn't bad at all, but on that day it seemed like forever! I would really have rather been at the pool. :rolleyes1

She isn't usually a shopper. I'm not sure what came over her on this trip. When she does shop it is always Disney stuff, so I shouldn't have been surprised. The F&G stuff she got is really cute. I'm not sure if you can get any of the stuff online. MiL actually thought she bought one more stone but it didn't arrive with the rest of the stuff (she had it all shipped home). I suggested that she go online and check to see if she could get it, but she said she'd spent enough.

F&G is so beautiful!!! I took so many pictures (most will come on our regularly scheduled Epcot day). I think that it runs during spring break, so maybe you will get there! I feel the same way about Halloween. They don't do a fall break here, so the chances of us getting to WDW in the fall are slim to none.

I think that MiL was very tired. (Since she'd been out till all hours the night before and our flights had been so early the morning before that) Since she only had 3 days though, she wanted to squeeze in as much as possible. I don't blame her for that, but she should have just kept her mouth shut. To be honest, I was very ready for her to leave.

such a clever line. and, as a 55 year old, I concur!!!;) although I would never talk to maddie that way (or jackson, or kaylee or mason, mygrandkids!!)

I am wanting to jump through my computer screen and tell MIL to think before she speaks, and stop being so, so,.. ooh, now I'm so mad I can't speak!!!:rotfl: some people just don't have a "filter"..

about maddie "molesting" mickey... that is SO funny.. we have a picture of nebo and I on our honeymoon cruise back in 1978 (yes you heard that right, actually June 17 , father's day, is our anniversary). it was taken somewhere along a waterfall we climbed in Jamaica, and the guy snapped the shot as my arm was reaching up to go around nebo's waist. guess where it looks like my hand is grabbing?

"And, sometimes 5 year olds have a hard time explaining what they’re really feeling. Apparently 55 year olds have that same problem sometimes too."

I'm not sure that truer words have ever been written! :thumbsup2

We all have Disney meltdowns, I get it. But hopefully your MIL wasn't too hard on Maddie for the rest of the trip! Hey, the part of Nemo with the fish with the lightbulb on its head freaks me out too!

Fantastic photos with the characters. I lost my coffee at the Mickey photo. I think you handled the situation with your MIL really well. And Maddie had every right to be tired - that's a lot of shopping time for a 5 year old.

Wow you are A Lot more patient than me! If there is one thing I can not stand to do it is shop with other people. Even when my husband and I shop we usually split up and just meet at the front. I'm one of those I know what I'm getting, grab it and get out types. Shopping with my kids takes a lot of patience and I certainly couldn't muster up that much for an adult.

I love the character pics with Maddie! I have one of those pics with my son last year and Stitch, lol. 4-5 year old are just at the perfect height for that to happen when they give hugs.

I can't believe what your MiL said to Maddie. My goodness, poor Maddie. After hearing about everything her cousins are getting then to hear that.

O H3LL NO! Could you have just put your MIL in the TOT and hoped she'd disappear along with the ghost family!

How much does it cost to get a tongue reattached? I'm sure you've bitten yours off! Ok, calm down, it's only 3 days.........

Maddie sure had a great time with Mickey and the gang, molestation and all! Which btw, had me bust out laughing loudly! Didn't she uhm touch somebody last trip as well?

Thank you Smidgy. Her behavior made me furious, but I just didn't want Maddie to get more upset.

OMG!!! I think you need to post that picture! That's hilarious! Even better that it was from your honeymoon!!! :rotfl:

Thank you. Luckily MiL left the next day, and after that day I tried to separate them a little just in case.

:lmao: I'm not sure where the Bruce scare came from, she never mentioned it before or after, but I'll let her know that she's not the only one.

Thanks! Poor Mickey, I'm pretty sure that she did the same thing to him last year.

Thank you. She was getting really tired. Maybe if we'd gone back to the resort to rest a bit...:rolleyes1

The shopping was getting super old, and I like to shop! We were planning to do all of our shopping later in the trip, so the worst part was knowing we'd have to go back to all of those shops for our stuff! :rotfl:

You're exactly right, at that age, it's where they reach :rotfl: I'm pretty sure that it was Mickey who got the same treatment last year. :rotfl2:

Mads had a rough day for sure. I was so upset for her. Luckily, the next day was going to be all about her. I was never more glad for planning it that way.

O H3LL NO! Could you have just put your MIL in the TOT and hoped she'd disappear along with the ghost family!

I was sooo angry. I told Bryan last night as I typed that I wasn't even looking forward to writing about that afternoon and evening (oh yeah, there's more) it still makes me mad! Luckily WDW is a big place, I often found myself walking away from her to get my anger under control. "It's only 3 days" was my personal mantra...If she had been staying for our whole trip, my reactions would have been much different.

:lmao: I think that it was Mickey who got the same treatment last year (and she went after a few princesses' chests as well), but now I'm going to go back to look! :lmao:

F&G festival is so pretty! Love it! Glad you guys got to explore it a bit that day. Was this the day of SoA? (I've lost track of days haha) I guess I'll find out soon enough! Baha! Glad Maddie ended up enjoying the characters and the fun parts of Nemo!

Hi Shannon. I am finally coming out of lurkdom. I'm a jumper from Nebo/Pkdonz. Really enjoying your report. i've read all the chapters great job.

Hilarious about Maddie's "interaction" with Mickey! :rotfl: If it makes you feel any better, most Mickey's are girls, from what I've heard. :rotfl2: I could so see Everett doing something like that!

Your MIL sounds like a real piece of work! I don't know what I would have done in your situation, but I think you handled it well. I know that growing up my Father's mother could be really snide and mean, and we never got along well. I agree that she is damaging her relationship with Maddie, and in the end that will be punishment enough. I do admire your restraint though, I don't know if I could have been as cool and collected as you were.

On another note, there are boy's light-up crocs! Oooh, I must keep my eyes peeled for them on our next trip! Everett would love them!

Hahaha aww, the character photos are too cute!

Okay... did she really have to talk ABOUT Maddie right in front of her like that? What human being isn't afraid of a shark?

I hope she at least felt bad about snapping. Ugh. You handled it so well... no use causing a scene in the middle of the Seas pavilion! Very nice. :thumbsup2

I have been following and enjoying your TR.

IMO, I think your husband should have told his Mother that having Maddie hear each day about all of the things she is buying her cousins is quite hurtful. As far as tipping, when she would say I'll just add the tip to yours, I'd say "That's fine. Your portion comes out to $..." and state exactly what it should be.

I have never been offended by a TR before, but I was surprised at the quip towards 55 year olds, and all the responses that are agreeing. I will be 55 next month, and my adult kids LOVE to have me with them at WDW. I would never be cheap nor disrespectful, and can verbally express myself just fine. I just wanted to put a good word out there about us middle age'rs.

Looking forward to more posts! Maddie is adorable - glad she got her character time in. :cheer2:

Oh, poor Maddie! I hope the day turns around and you guys have a great dinner. It would have been hard to keep my mouth shut if anyone talked to my child like that or made fun of them for being scared! I hope grandma realizes her mistake and tries to make it up to Maddie and you guys!

My poor husband, who umpped 6 games in 90 degrees today, was snoozing on the couch while I was reading your update and let out a loud, detailed curse of your MIL. Seriously? I admire your restrain, but I would have been strangling her at that point (and I'm close to her 55 year age!).

On a happier note, I love the photos of Maddie at the Character Spot...so very, very cute.
