We just returned from our first ever
Disney Cruise. We stayed in suite 12014 on the concierge level.
The pluses:
Melanie, Rodrigo & Panos were all outstanding concierges. They are friendly and helpful. Really, I NEVER experienced any staff that wasn't friendly. They were all nice - we even had one lady offer to show our daughter where the restroom by the pool was located. I feel bad for the staff - they are on 6 month contracts that have them working EVERY day. They do get 2 months off at the end, but still, that is a hard life to live. It made me feel guilty for trying to relax when they are working very hard.
Kids Club was incredible - my daughter (age 5) loved going - she felt very grown up and independent. The club is stocked with staff, so they are safe. The security system for them is top notch. My only complaint would be the art - my daughter loves her art, but we were rarely ever able to locate it when I picked her up. Maybe they could have cubes with different letters so it could be stored by first name.
Castaway Cay is an absolutely gorgeous island. We loved our day there. The food was terrible (see that in the negatives to follow), but the drinks were good, the beach was great and the sting ray adventure was perfect. I would consider (if money is not an issue) a private cabana next time. We didn't do it, but it would have been nice as the sun is strong and the umbrellas are mostly taken. This is one port that the next time I will get up early and off the boat as soon as possible. It is worth it!
Negatives:
Pools are small and really crowded. My daughter could have cared less, but it did gross me out to think of all those kids peeing in that water.
Food was not good. Now, I did have a great beef tenderloin in the Royal Dining room, but the potatoes were dry as was the bread. This was our favorite dining room. We did Pirate Night in Animators Palate. The food was terrible, but that was specific to the Pirate Night menu. Next time I would skip the Pirate Night on rotation and go to Remy. We had a great meal there. It was a very unique experience with very good food and an outstanding view (we went right at sunset). Service was excellent at Remy as well. Our servers for rotational dining were very nice, but often too busy to spend much time with us. They were working their tail's off. If you want a pre dinner cocktail - either go to a bar on the boat, concierge lounge or get to dinner early so you are first for drink orders. Dinner is a bit of a rush, but this may be because we were at the first seating. We really longed for a good hot breakfast (buffet was weak - biscuits were good, but eggs were gross) and we also really longed for something specifically cooked because we ordered it. The food is all mass produced (except at Remy). Room service was weak too - small portions and only warm when delivered. I really wasn't surprised the food was weak as I had read about it before hand, and this is Disney and they are feeding the masses. Castaway Cay has cookies bar-b-q. It was weak as well. My daughter took one bite of her burger and spit it out. My husband did say the snapper was good, but my hotdog was just okay. The only thing I found on the boat that I couldn't get enough of were the egg salad sandwich bites in the concierge lounge and the oatmeal cookies via room service.
Conclusion/pointers:
We had a great time and the boat is stunning. Everything was spotlessly clean and the staff very friendly. I would skip leaving the boat in Nassau as it is a dump/tourist trap close to the ship. Castaway Cay was wonderful and worth leaving the boat. We enjoyed Skyline bar the most. Really, most of the bars are empty and they have great drinks. Watch the fireworks from deck 13 at the front of the boat. No crowds at all. Front elevators are the least crowded. Concierge level was wonderful as you really escaped the crowds. It was like having a section of the ship all to yourself. Other things we loved - the tv in the mirror of the bathroom - my daughter would take an hour bath watching Beauty and the Beast. All the Disney on demand programming on the tv was a real treat. Ride the aquaduck late at night or early in the morning when the lines are short. It is a lot of fun! They should have two on the next boat they build. We really loved the boat. There is so much to do and honestly not enough time to relax! We will go back and will definitely do concierge if money allows. I read about perks in concierge - gifts to room, etc. We never had gifts during the day, but we did receive a lithograph at the end. I also read complaints about the gates. I personally like the gates. It is a premium to stay in that area and it was nice to have the area kept private.
The ship is a nod back to the glorious ships of the early 1900's. I found myself in awe of its beauty. I did find myself longing for some divine food, but the fun we all had made up for that weakness.
One other thing, if you are traveling with a handicap person who can use a non accessible room, but needs a walker to ambulate, consider getting an accessible room. The door to the cabin was about 2 inches too narrow for my husband's walker and the doors are really heavy. He struggled getting in and out of the room.
