Disney's Magical Express -- Luggage Tag Info

I didn't read the whole thread so very sorry if this was already discussed. I am helping a friend plan their Disney trip. They want to take DME back to the airport on their last day but they are staying that night at a Marriott by the airport. Their travel agent signed them up for DME but said they could call the day before their last day to tell DME what time they want to get picked up. Is this true? I have never used DME other than the traditional way.

No, DME is only for transportation to and from Disney-operated resorts on the Disney property. Also when you stay at a Disney hotel DME gives you pickup information based on your outgoing flight time; you don't call them to specify what you want.

If they are staying close to the airport I would guess that hotel would probably have their own airport shuttle of some kind. Otherwise they will have to arrange for a taxi or some other transportation. Mears (which does operate DME for Disney by the way) is an example of a service where you can arrange a pickup.

UPDATE: After reading subsequent replies I realized I didn't understand the question. I thought it was if DME would pick you up at a non-Disney hotel. Now I get it that the question is about taking DME to the airport from a Disney resort but not on the flight day.

Are they going from a WDW resort to the airport? If so, then yes, they can do that.

Thanks! They are going from POR to the airport and then will arrange seperately with the other hotel. I just never heard of using DME without flight information and being able to call the day before to arrange a time.

I wouldn't wait until the night before. I would rather just get it taken care of before I even got to WDW. I would be afraid that I'd forget or that the employee I talk to on the phone would screw something up. It would be better to do it early so that they have time to get confirmation.

Have to agree. I would want it taken care of to begin with. It's hard to remember to do stuff once you get to WDW..you get caught up in the fun, and leave things until too late. So....I would have the travel agent call and have DME put on for the return to MCO. They can just explain to the DME person that they are heading back to the airport for the evening...so can leave later in the day...they aren't dependent on flight times.

Thanks everyone! I am going to tell my friend it get the time figured out as soon as possible. I think some of the things the travel agent says is wrong so I just wanted to double check.

A little nervous here...

Last Wednesday switched to BC from Poly. Magical Express immediately contacted by guest services regarding the switch and said no problem. Have not gotten new tags yet. ME tells me the tags were actually printed and given to post office last Friday. We are in NY. We have 3 more mail days until we go next Tuesday, early morning. I am praying that these tags show up. Today's (Wednesday) mail has come and nada zip zilch.

I have been told that if they don't come just to bring airline claims for the bags to ME desk and they will find the bags and retrieve them. I am wondering how big a hassle is this? Has anybody ever lost their luggage having it handled this way? Did it take longer to receive the luggage?

Also, not meaning to sound truly naive but we have never used ME before (we haven't been to WDW since 2004 and they didn't have it then), but do we have to be in our room when luggage is delivered or will they go ahead and just leave it for us in the room?

Thanks for any answers.

I think you will be fine - I know sometimes the luggage tags do not arrive in time at all - did they tell you to use the tags you have if the new ones do not arrive? Not sure how that part works.......

You do NOT have to be in your room when the luggage is delivered. If you are there fine, if not - they just leave it in your room.

they said not to use those tags but to bring the airline claims to the me desk and they will use those to retrieve the bags.

I could be mistaken, but I thought I read that as long as your reservation number doesn't change that your old tags should be fine because the bar code contains the correct information. What I've read that you should do is carefully cross out the EP in the Mickey icon because that tells DME to send your bags to the Epcot resort area (since the Poly is in the MK resort area).

the magical express office are the ones that told me not to use those luggage tags. i have already thrown them out so I wouldn't use by mistake. They said to still use the vouchers for the bus.

Hopefully they will make it in time. I still have 3 more mail days. I just get nervous as each day the mailman comes and doesn't have them.

I hope they do get there because it will ease your mind, but I think you will be fine either way. I have read of this happening before with no major problems.

Since you tossed the original tags, it's too late for this advice...but if your reservation number stayed the same, you could have used them. You could have just crossed out the original resort name. But, hopefully the new tags will get to you in time.
So...if they don't show up ontime...you have two options. You can bring your claim receipts to DME counter with you..then give them to the CM along with a description of your bags and the number of bags and they will send someone to get the bags and get them to your resort. Or....you can just head to baggage claim yourself, get your own bags and bring them to the DME bus with you. The driver can then stow your bags beneath the bus and then give them to you when you get to your reseort. You will be expected to tip the driver though.
Which one to do??? Up to you. If you allow DME CMs to get your bags and have them taken to your resort for you, you need to allow up to 3-4 hrs after resort checkin for them to get to your resort room. If that isn't an issue for you, then go with them taking care of the bags.
But, if you would rather have your bags when you get to your room, get them yourself and bring them to the bus.

My issue with allowing DME workers to get the untagged bags is that the bags make it to the public baggage claim carousels...and there is just no way to know, for sure, how long the bags are going to be untended. I hate the thought of my bags going around and around, waiting for someone to come get them. If the CMs get delayed, who knows who will have access to my checked bags.

They came, they came (BC ME tags)! crisis averted. thanks for the hand holding.

Does anyone know how to attach the luggage tags?

The instructions confused me the first time, too. First, don't remove the backing of the tag when you start out. What you do is slide the tag through a handle on your checked bag and then remove the backing on the ENDS of the tag and stick the ends together. The middle part of the backing remains on the tag. You basically end up with a loop where the ends are stuck together.

I'm going to assume you mean the yellow DME tags, not the hard plastic tags that come as part of a pkg.
Take one long yellow strip..when you flip it over, you will see a small square on the bottom edges. These are the areas that you will reveal in order to stick the ends together. So...slip that one long tag through the luggage handle. Then, carefully peel off each end square. Then, press these two ends together. The tag loop should now be able to move freely around the bag handle. Just do NOT peel off the entire back side of the tag....no movement is going to happen then, and that is NOT the desired effect.

I'm sorry if this has been answered as I have not gone through the past 6 years of posts....

Do we only get to check one bag per guest? We got 4 long yellow tags, one for everyone in our family. But what if one of us wants to check two bags?? When reading the back of the tag it sounds like you can tear it in the middle to make two tags out of one the long ones. Is this correct? We are hoping to pack one bag with just snacks/toiletries, etc. so our other bags don't exceed the weight limit.

Thanks for the help!!!!

Don't cut them - just call and ask for an extra set - it is no problem and they send them right out.
