Bread Bowls

*raises hand* Fellow clam chowder fan here!! :woohoo:

I'm going to do the separate cup too as I don't eat nearly enough bread to enjoy having the soup *in* my bread bowl.

Does anyone know if you can order the soup separately? Ideally, I'd like to get two soups (in cups) and one boule. ;)

You could get two soups, but you'll have to pay for two full bread bowls and ask them to "hold the bread".

I remember the days where they wouldn't charge you for the bread when you only bought a soup. We often bought 1 bowl, and 1 soup and split.

Thanks! That's...sort of...fair. LOL!!! I know what my husband will say, "Get both breads! I'll eat it later."

Right. And it will sit there lonely in the hotel room until it hits the wastecan on the day we check out. :lmao:

We do this all the time! I really hate soggy bread but love to eat the bread after. We will get the soup and bread separate and it makes a pretty filling meal for DD12 and I. However, the salads are served in an even bigger bowl which my DSis, DD, and I will share. The bread is so good! Sometimes we will opt for the salad just so we can get the larger bread bowl.

FYI, when Pacific Wharft Cafe is crowded (line out the door and then some) they have a soup only express line off to the side. It's located over on the side closer to the water.

Also, if you just want bread, you can buy a loaf for just under $5. They will slice it for you if you want. Our family of 6 has eaten this along with a soup or 2 and been more than full.

I think this was the last time we got the salad inside the bread bowl. Now we always get it separated.:goodvibes

I'm so glad to have come across this tip! Yay! I'll pack a ziploc so I can carry the extra bread to snack on during the afternoon. You guys rock! :cool1:

Out of the bowl for me next time. Great tip. I hate trying to break the bread off while the soup is in it. It is really messy. This will work great. Love the idea about asking for some butter too. Can't wait to try it.

LOL no need to panic. 3Minnies misspoke. The TORTILLA factory closed and there was confusion. There are still Boudin bread bowls galore ;)

Whew, what a relief. I knew about the Tortilla Factory, and I have to say, they must have heard me again and again. Our first trip to DL in January 2009, the one thing I really missed at DL over WDW was Ghiradelli. I could not understand, why there was no Ghiradelli anywhere at DL, especially since California is where it all started for Ghiradelli and I even put that in my trip report. So, when I learned recently that they were putting one in where the tortilla factory was, it just made my day. The one at WDW is incredible, and I hate to say, but it sometimes is dinner for us. Not often, but sometimes. And they always offer great deals during the holidays on their "factory" bags. Their hot chocolate is the best anywhere, and with the cool evenings that you experience in Southern California, this would be an incredible treat.

Edited to say I am sorry I didn't read down further to see that it wasn't Boudin that was in fact closed. I read the thread, went into panic mode and then the fingers started flying.

I'm a newbie, where can I get that fantastic looking soup and bread??

In DCA at Pacific Wharf Cafe. In DL the clam chowder ones are near the rafts to Tom Sawyer Island, or they have gumbo ones at Royal Veranda by Pirates.

Thank u Shannon! U should follow me around this board and answer all my silly questions!!!!:rotfl:

I get gumbo in a bread bowl every trip. No matter what I can't eat an entire bread bowl AND the gumbo, even if it was separate. It's just too much food for me lol. But I do eat most of the sides, most of the gumbo and the top piece of course!

Thanks everyone!

bumbershoot - That looks like a perfect lunch to me... a yummy bread bowl with a cupcake for dessert!

The vegetarian chili is SO good!

If only that cupcake had been anywhere near tasty. As it was, I threw away most of it, after finally eating it while waiting for my shuttle to arrive. I tried 3 holiday treats while on the trip, and ended up throwing away at least half of each because they were so SO bad.

BTW, I believe you can also request butter when you do this.

Oh yes....

The Gumbo...is it the same or similar to the Gumbo at BB or CO? If so I may have to try this....as it is DD12 and I can probably share a salad/bread bowl and be stuffed!

Hey Kerri!

I believe it is the same gumbo, as Boudin supplies all of the bread bowls used in DL. Found that out from the Harbor Galley folks!

Thanks to the OP. I haven't had a chance to get onto the boards much lately, with the holidays and work. It's really fun to see something you talked about get discussed on the boards!

And yep. I absolutely love to get the bread separate. I think I started doing that the 3rd time I ate there - in 2002 and haven't looked back. One of the best tips I've given on the show!!!!

BTW - I do love the salads, also. One of the best places to eat in DCA! :thumbsup2

Why can't they do better with baked goods, especially now that they have a bakery onsite? I got a carrot cake cupcake in October and though OK..it was just that..no better than what you'd find at WalMart, and actually maybe not quite as good..they seem to have issues with having cake moist and should work on that.. I also had the pie at Hungry Bear and really..redo that recipe!..especially if they are having that place in CarsLand that specializes in pie, if they would do better they could make a killing. I digress. I can't wait to have my soup in a cup, love the idea of the baggie and what do you mean they give you too much butter? There is no such thing :)

Speaking of bread, last time we went do DL my mother in law got a large mickey head shaped loaf of bread. I don't know where she got it. Does anyone know if and where they sell these? Thanks.

Nancy!! HI! How are you?? It's good to see you back here! :) Thanks for info on the Gumbo, I love that stuff!! I don't think we've ever had a bread bowl at the Wharf but it is going on my list of things to do! :)

We got one of these outside the bread factory on a cart, they aren't there all the time tho. I can't recall where else I've seen them.....

Just so you know, the gumbo at Royal Verandah and Harbor Galley is different than the gumbo at BB or CO. The gumbo at BB/CO is chicken gumbo with andouille sausage, but the gumbo at Royal Verandah is a steak gumbo or vegetarian gumbo. Harbor Galley only has steak gumbo I believe.

The gumbo at BB/CO is very thick and is served over dirty rice. The gumbo at Royal Verandah/Harbor Galley is much thinner and more like a soup.

DH prefers the gumbo at BB/CO over the gumbo at Royal Verandah, but will sacrifice for me since I am partial to the clam chowder at Royal Verandah/Harbor Galley/Pacific Wharf.

HTH! :goodvibes

You can buy them inside the Pacific Wharf Cafe as well.

They used to sell them at the fruit stand near P.T. Flea's, but since both those places have been displaced for Carsland I guess that's no longer relevant. Sometimes the bread cart that you're referring to would be out near the DCA exit gates late in the day, but I hadn't noticing them doing that for a while and I doubt they are with all the construction and re-routing. But these might be the reasons you feel like you've seen the Mickey head bread elsewhere.
