Snow to 80 in 8 days–A spoonful of Holiday Cheer (2/5 update Ch 36 - Final Thoughts)

I told the boys the previous night what time they needed to be at breakfast for us to make rope drop at Epcot on our final day. If they weren't there and done when I finished eating I would head on to Epcot and meet them there. After I got up and got ready to go, I texted the boys to see if they were about ready and they informed me that they were already at Mara getting their breakfast! I headed towards the bus stop to make the short ride over to Jambo House to join them. We were getting close to the end of using up our DDP credits for the trip, and Mara serves a pretty good and filling breakfast for a CS credit.

On the way to the lobby I decided to take a quick check of the Savanna and see if any animals were out I could photograph. I didn't see much that morning, but I did find one headless bird I hadn't previously photographed.....

001.jpg

Turns out it wasn't headless at all!!! (I think this is an African Crowned Crane)
004.jpg

I got to the bus stop and hopped on the first park bus that came by and was off to breakfast. After a short trip I walked into Mara and there sat the boys, eating their breakfast and watching the Disney cartoons on the nearby TV. That slight doubt that they were really there instead of yanking my chain was totally erased. A pleasant way to start our final park day!

I quickly got my food and joined them, enjoying cartoons that reminded me of when I was a kid growing up. We very soon finished up our meals, put away our trash and trays, and headed back out to the bus stop to catch an Epcot bus we hoped would soon arrive. We were doing well on time if we didn't have to wait long, and should make rope drop with ease. When we got out to the bus stop I saw something I hadn't taken the time to notice when I had gotten off the bus earlier. Apparently a CM had been busy already that morning leaving some artwork for us to enjoy!

It almost made me want to head back to MK instead of Epcot, but we had lots of plans for the day ahead. Our bus soon arrived and we were off. When we arrived at Epcot and made the walk to the turnstiles, they had just started letting people in, and a group was starting to form at the rope beyond Spaceship Earth. There weren't very many people ahead of us though as this appeared to be a rather quiet day, at least so far!

We got up to the rope just as the characters were starting to appear and head our way for the park opening. Matthew was our FP Volunteer for the day, so he worked his way into position for the trip to Soarin' once the park opened. Jonathan and Andrew stood with Matthew, but I wasn't as worried about being in the very front since I didn't have to hurry. I found myself a good position where I could get some pictures of the park opening. There wasn’t a very well defined line of people at the rope, but there were only about three or four people in front of me. I was happy I would get to enjoy this since I had been "cheated" out of a show on our rope drop at DHS day.

017.jpg

The park opening was soon behind us and the rope dropped to begin the ever popular Soarin' Stroll for another day! Everything remained fairly calm and I took the time to get a couple of pictures as I found a path I could walk without having to worry about running over any little children, strollers, or the wayward adult who didn't fully understand what they hadn't gotten themselves into.

018.jpg

019.jpg

As we walked along, Jonathan and Andrew decided they wouldn't worry about keeping up with Matthew, who was doing a superb job of staying near the front of the crowd. As the three of us entered the building through the glass doors, we could see Matthew up front making his way downstairs to get our FPs. We headed down the stairs and just as we walked towards the standby entrance Matthew fell right in line with us. He had been fourth to reach the FP machines and scored this first coveted set.

020.jpg

After our preflight instructions from Patrick Warburton, we were quickly on our way, gliding effortlessly over the California landscape. I always enjoy that first ride on Soarin' early in the morning. You seem to get the full effect of the fresh pine and orange grove aromas!

After we landed again, we headed towards
021.jpg

On the way I noticed these signs, and since they all reminded me of things you would hear from lifeguards, I thought about Poolrat and had to take a picture as a tribute to her!
022.jpg

On our previous trip, we hadn't taken the time to do Turtle Talk with Crush, and we really wanted to see it again. We did the Nemo part of the journey and then got in line for Turtle Talk. We like to do this first thing before the crowds start to build, which usually happens soon after the initial draw to Soarin'. We waited for the next show to start and the boys entertained themselves with the interactive games in the room. They finally started letting people in for Crush, and we quickly entered and found our seats.

As the show began and Crush appeared, there were quite a few children sitting down front, but the room was not completely full. Crush appeared and we were anxious to hear how much different the show would be this time around. Crush had his usual interaction with the kids and asked for questions like he always does.

One little boy raised his hand and when Crush acknowledged him, he asked Crush what he got for Christmas. Crush reacted with a quizzical look and asked the little boy what Christmas was. This little boy who looked maybe five began a lengthy and detailed description of the true meaning of Christmas, how it was Jesus’ birthday, and how those of us who were Christians celebrate it each year.

The whole room was completely quiet while this little boy told the story, and you could see people looking around in amazement. Most were trying to see if they could locate the parent's of this little boy, which wasn't hard to do since you could see the pride they were experiencing as he continued to talk. When he finished you could hear many whispered comments of "Wow" around the room, and I looked at the boys and we all shook our heads at each other and smiled, impressed by just how well this little boy had the full grasp of what Christmas was really all about.

After Turtle Talk ended, we headed outside to continue our journey. We were already at our FP return time for Soarin' so Matthew made a quick run to get another set of Soarin' FPs while we waited. We like to get that second set early if we plan to ride multiple times since the FP return time for Soarin' grows much faster than the other rides. And with a straggler who would be joining us later, we would need the extra passes.

While we waited on Matthew I took the opportunity to take a few more pictures.
024.jpg

025.jpg

Matthew rejoined us with a second set of FPs in hand; 11:21 return time for Soarin'.....still not too bad!
023.jpg

We headed off to do a few more rides. As we strolled along, heading towards our next destination, I took the time to notice what a beautiful day we had for our final day at the park. The fountain was a great place to get a picture with the sky in the background.

028.jpg

The park was still fairly empty, and the boys were having a good time just walking along, talking and laughing.

029.jpg

The standby wait time for Mission Space wasn’t very long, so we hopped in line to ride the orange side. We had made it inside when we started hearing announcements that the ride was experiencing delays……orange side only! We finally made it on the ride and completed our mission with only the usual tense moments with asteroids and collapsing terrain. But still, it took about an hour to get through the ride.

By the time we got out and headed towards Test Track, we were just a couple of minutes from our FP window again. We waited near the FP machines and grabbed a set of TT FPs to use later as soon as we could, with a return time of 12:50.
032.jpg

The standby wait time had reached about 45 minutes by the time we got there, so we decided to use the Single Rider line. I always enjoy the sights in the line at Test Track.

034.jpg

035.jpg

Then there is this Common Hidden Mickey in the preshow room for the Single Rider Line.

My redneck ride photo.
037.jpg

After we exited the ride we took a few minutes to check out the cars on display. Drew wanted to get his picture in the Camaro.

So what do we have on the agenda next?

Coming Up Next – Chapter 32 Epcot Day Continues

Here are the latest results and standings in my TR Contest!

Congrats to Rosie, Magdalene, Jenb, Kate and Vanessa for top honors this round, all getting five correct answers. And a special congratulations to Glenn and Mark, who made the best use of my extra time to change answers and made a significant improvement in their results. (Although I can't say it was due to my additional hints since most of Glenn's improvement came on questions I didn't mention for people to rethink!) LOL

Rosie - 5 of 10 (+1)
Kathy - 4 of 10 (+3)
Liesa - 3 of 10 (+1)
Magdalene - 5 of 10 (+2)
Jenb1023 - 5 of 10

Dan - 4 of 10 (+2)
Vanessa - 5 of 10
Tammie - 2 of 10 (+1)

I'm pretty sure I got everyone's changes incorporated, but if anyone thinks I missed something please let me know! A lot of you got the correct fastpasses that came second and third, but in the wrong order. I did give bonus points for getting the correct two. Rosie was the only one who got them in the correct order, so congrats to her on that. (Although I think she bribed Wooden Marv on her trip to get the correct answer to that one, or stirred him in her drink until he got tipsy and a liiiiittle too talkative!) LOL

After twelve rounds Magdalene still holds a slight lead, but there are a number of people still not far behind……..

Magdalene - 44 (+22)
Kathy - 42 (+14)
Kate - 40 (+10)
Dan - 38 (+26)

Great update, Marv. You got some really great pictures of Epcot in a semi-empty park. And good job on all the fastpasses!

I love what the CM did on the sidewalk at Kidani. :goodvibes

Here, I thought I had done MUCH better this round; obviously, I was wrong. :sad2: Hopefully I will do better on the next round.

A wonderful way to end the trip. I didn't count on the voyage to to Nemo before heading to the other side for TT and M:S.
It was a beautiful day.

Thanks for the shout out.

Marvie, I am woefully behind. Like embarrassingly behind. Do you forgive me?

This update is fabulous! I have to say (and don't let this go to your head buddy) that you captured some truly amazing shots this trip. I especially loved the sidewalk chalk ones, so cool! Who knew you were so cool? ;)

This picture confused me at first, I thought the brown part in front was his head tucked in and that he had a weird spikey looking tail!
004.jpg

Your boys look adorable walking together and chatting. They seem like such nice boys, unlike the ones in my neighborhood who steal my girls' scooters and spit on my car. Sorry for the tangent!
029.jpg

I adore Epcot, don't you? I feel like you could spend days and days there and still not exhaust all it has to offer. Good park choice for your last day.

BTW, are you doing a TR for the trip you just took? I wasn't sure if I missed a link or shameless plug somewhere! :goodvibes

Sounds like a very productive, well organized morning! Love the headless bird!:lmao: The chalk drawings are so fun.

The story of the little boy and the Christmas story is so precious! I have a 6 yr old in my SS class that has been praying like a seasoned preacher for over a year - sometimes in front of the whole church - It is so amazing and such a blessing - Such is the Kingdom of God!

I'm happy to see I have almost half as many points as Magdalene!:rotfl:

Thanks so much for the heads up on the contest. I can't believe I got 5 right!

Fun update! I really like the chalk drawings. Congrats on doing so well with your Fps. You're racking up the rides on Soarin'.

Sounds like you had a great morning at Epcot! Was that January 2 now? I think I lost track of the dates... It seems like the crowds really disappear immediately after New Years...

I am glad that I did not change any of my other answers! But the one that I changed I did really improve, even though I got the order wrong... :sad2: But I am not going to complain!!

I have never seen those paintings at the bus stop, what a neat surprise! :goodvibes

The chalk drawings were pretty cool! :thumbsup2 Like the water drawing of MM at AK the day before, I hadn't seen these before. We actually saw some more chalk drawings on our last trip, but it looked like they had let a bunch of kids have fun while they waited early that morning. Certainly not as artistic as those were.

And you DID get 3 bonus points! I figured you would be really happy about that! ;)

A wonderful way to end the trip. I didn't count on the voyage to to Nemo before heading to the other side for TT and M:S.
It was a beautiful day.

Thanks for the shout out.
As soon as I saw those signs I immediately thought of you! We always try to get those quickly disappearing FPs early since the others will usually still be around later on.
I love the chalk drawings!

Great photo of the fountain.

You guys did a great job scoring all those fastpasses. :thumbsup2
Thanks Lessa! It was a very relaxed morning, but still seemed like we got a lot accomplished!

Marvie, I am woefully behind. Like embarrassingly behind. Do you forgive me?
:woohoo: Molly! I'm just so happy to have you around and posting again! Kathy and I have been thinking/worried about your "disappearance." You KNOW I still love ya!

Thanks! And you can't possibly expect me to try and list all THOSE names on this thread, can you? :confused3 (A guy shouldn't have to reveal such embarrassingly low numbers on himself, right?) :sad1:
This picture confused me at first, I thought the brown part in front was his head tucked in and that he had a weird spikey looking tail!
I would typically make some smart remark about how easily confused you are anyway, and end it with one of those :rolleyes1 smilies, BUT..........since you just come back to join us I guess I'll refrain......THIS TIME!
Your boys look adorable walking together and chatting. They seem like such nice boys,
That might have been one of the few times that happened on this trip. Letting them have their own Studio room had its advantages.......and disadvantages!
unlike the ones in my neighborhood who steal my girls' scooters and spit on my car. Sorry for the tangent!
I'm guessing there is a story in there somewhere.
I adore Epcot, don't you? I feel like you could spend days and days there and still not exhaust all it has to offer. Good park choice for your last day.
I agree! We spent a good bit of time there on this trip, and I STILL feel like we did so little.
BTW, are you doing a TR for the trip you just took? I wasn't sure if I missed a link or shameless plug somewhere! :goodvibes
Nothing so far. Trying to get this one finished up before I worry about that one. Working a lot of hours since we got back, so little free time until now. Not sure there is much of a TR in this last trip. Outside of a few highlights we didn't seem to do a whole lot to talk about with the heat and humidity. A lot more time relaxing and doing nothing it seemed like.

It was quite inspiring to listen to. I think everyone expected the Santa Claus response and when he started we were all just looking around at each other in amazement! It definitely put a really good finish on our trip!
I'm happy to see I have almost half as many points as Magdalene!:rotfl:
That's the spirit Tammie! Hope you are still having fun playing along! :goodvibes
Thanks so much for the heads up on the contest. I can't believe I got 5 right!
You got some of the random ones correct too, which is pretty good!
Fun update! I really like the chalk drawings. Congrats on doing so well with your Fps. You're racking up the rides on Soarin'.
It started out low stress with the boys being ready on time. We were having a good time together! :cloud9:
Sounds like you had a great morning at Epcot! Was that January 2 now? I think I lost track of the dates... It seems like the crowds really disappear immediately after New Years...
Yes, that was Sunday, January 2. It really depends what date falls on Sunday, and what most schools do about returning after the long Christmas break as to when the crowds disappear. It did seem like a lot of people were checking out that day, but also quite a few the day before for whatever reason.
I am glad that I did not change any of my other answers! But the one that I changed I did really improve, even though I got the order wrong... :sad2: But I am not going to complain!!
Got you a bonus point at least! :)
I have never seen those paintings at the bus stop, what a neat surprise! :goodvibes
It was pretty cool! :thumbsup2 I think since I am so NOT artistic things like that easily impress me!

Darn! Right rides but wrong order :headache: And it's always the drawings! Why do I never guess drawings??? Sigh....

I love the picture of your boys all walking together. Too bad I never got to meet Matthew. Hopefully one day!

What? No thumbs up photo for TT? Marv, Marv, Marv. Have I taught you nothing about a good ride photo? :sad2:

On the way to the lobby I decided to take a quick check of the Savanna and see if any animals were out I could photograph. I didn't see much that morning, but I did find one headless bird I hadn't previously photographed.....

Did he throw a flaming pumpkin at you? :confused3

When we got out to the bus stop I saw something I hadn't taken the time to notice when I had gotten off the bus earlier. Apparently a CM had been busy already that morning leaving some artwork for us to enjoy!

That's pretty cool! I didn't know Disney allowed spontaneous artistic expression like that! :rotfl2:

Everything remained fairly calm and I took the time to get a couple of pictures as I found a path I could walk without having to worry about running over any little children, strollers, or the wayward adult who didn't fully understand what they hadn't gotten themselves into.

So it was Matthew's job to tip strollers and elbow kids out of the way, right?

After our preflight instructions from Patrick Warburton, we were quickly on our way, gliding effortlessly over the California landscape. I always enjoy that first ride on Soarin' early in the morning. You seem to get the full effect of the fresh pine and orange grove aromas!

Do I get a bonus point if I predict that Liesa will sigh at the mere mention of Mr. Warburton's name? And I love the smell of orange groves in the morning.

Crush reacted with a quizzical look and asked the little boy what Christmas was. This little boy who looked maybe five began a lengthy and detailed description of the true meaning of Christmas, how it was Jesus’ birthday, and how those of us who were Christians celebrate it each year.

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I don't have enough thumbs for this. Very cool. What was Crush's reaction?

We like to get that second set early if we plan to ride multiple times since the FP return time for Soarin' grows much faster than the other rides.

Wise you are. Predicted this, I should have. :yoda:

And a special congratulations to Glenn and Mark, who made the best use of my extra time to change answers and made a significant improvement in their results.

Whew! Although I'm still so far behind, I'm not sure it matters at this point.

I love the picture of your boys all walking together. Too bad I never got to meet Matthew. Hopefully one day!
Maybe so! Hope it isn't while we are standing in line at the alternate space-time continuum TSMM you created! ;)
What? No thumbs up photo for TT? Marv, Marv, Marv. Have I taught you nothing about a good ride photo? :sad2:
I'm so ashamed!!! :guilty:

Do I get a bonus point if I predict that Liesa will sigh at the mere mention of Mr. Warburton's name? And I love the smell of orange groves in the morning.
The English Patient! :thumbsup2
I don't have enough thumbs for this. Very cool. What was Crush's reaction?
Didn't really say a whole lot, at least nothing that stands out to any of us. Played it safe I guess, but he did ask the little boy what he got.
Wise you are. Predicted this, I should have. :yoda:
Space Balls!
Whew! Although I'm still so far behind, I'm not sure it matters at this point.
Far behind, you are! Always matters, it does! :thumbsup2

Looks like a successful attack on Epcot was begun by Marv and boys, on that particular day....good job!

I have to confess, I don't get the multiple rides on Soarin' thing. One ride per trip and I'm good. So, I'd just get the one set of fastpasses and that'd be it. Maybe if they replaced Patrick Warburton with Olivia Wilde or Scarlett Johansson....

I'm glad I took the time to improve my score. :teeth:

So, did anyone come anywhere close to guessing the couple of "one in a million" questions this round?

I know what you mean about riding Soarin' so many times. I actually feel that way about TT and MS. Once a trip is really enough for me riding those.

Part of that was because of knowing Alison would want to ride a couple of times, and the boys don't mind riding multiple times. This past trip we actually rode it a number of times, but we were mainly looking for the HMs each time. Agree on OW and SJ being our ride hostesses. It would make the wait (and anticipation?) quite a bit better. :woohoo:

Yes, you made a big leap from originally only having one correct answer. Funny that most of your new correct answers had nothing to do with my additional clues though! :thumbsup2 As for the "one in a million" questions, nobody got the bus stop and Turtle Talk questions correct, but at least one person submitted a correct answer for each of the rest of them. I thought since the one about what I saw was done similarly to the water painting in AK the day before, that at least one person would go down that path. Rosie was the only one who got the correct FPs in the correct order.

Marv I didn't try the drunken wooden Marv approach this time but hmmm for future ones sounds like a plan !!!:rotfl2:I can't remmeber all my answers but knew I didn't get the Headles Bird or the True Meaning of Christmas !!! Gotta ask did anyone get those ?????:confused3:confused3
