A Birthday Trip without a Birthday - 2/16: Conclusion and Bonus Birthday Tea

Congrats on making your ressies !!I am waiting a while for mine as I don't book the trip the TA does and it prolly wont be booked yet, but if I wait till 185 days out I should be able to make them all !!At least I hope so !! Carol and I have agreed on the restaurants and she doesn't care what days I pick or times !!:rotfl2:

Glad you got all your ARD's.

For Ohana's you might want to get there a bit early and then let them know you are trying to catch the fireworks on the beach. Since it is buffet but it served, they bring it to your table so you may want them to pace the meal a bit to get you done by 9:20 or so.

I have 2 great meals and 1 really slow meal there. I remember almost running to get to the beach because I left plenty of time ( like 2 hours ) and the pacing was so slow we almost did not see fireworks.

We have watched the fireworks from 'Ohana's twice. Neither time were we next to a window, but we could see well enough, and the sound was broadcast over the speakers.

Popping in to say that I looked at your pictures a day or two ago, but didn't really have time to post. DLP looks beautiful.

Your ADR list looks great! Lots of really good places on there.

I just noticed Liesa's recommendation of a '40's band at the Hollywood Brown Derby. I think that's a fantastic idea! I wonder if it may be too costly? If they already fill it, they may not feel the need for the extra expense. But that would be so cool.

Thanks Glenn. Need to get organized with the next buch of pictures.

I love the HBD idea as well. And I think Disney should not only do things which are necessary to fill some place, I love it that they also provide "unnecessary" entertainment - like Devine at AK or Streetmosphere at DHS. Without it it wouldn't be the special place that it is. But I know what you mean... :goodvibes

What a wonderful array of resturants. Some I have eaten at and some are still on the list.

Make sure you save room for Food and Wine!!!! :goodvibes

We are very excited about all the places... Will see about Food and Wine. Katharina's food intolerances will be a bit hindering for that and then there are quite a few countries that we will feel comfortable to skip because they are too close to home (Germany, Poland etc.). But I hope for some interesting booths as well. :thumbsup2

I am all for having authentic dishes at the restaurants who are aiming for that sort of thing. I know everyone doesn't like "authentic" foods, but if they are going to tout themselves as "African" then they really ought to have at least a few dishes that are truly African- spices and all!

I agree and it looks like Jiko is moving into that direction again after some years where it seemed to lose a bit of its focus.

I dont' think you'll miss it once you get settled there and begin to discover all the neat things Boardwalk has. It should have enough to entertain you and keep you from yearning for AKL.

Thanks! I think being able to walk to two parks will be a great bonus! And the fact that it is something new and exciting! :thumbsup2

I think I'm more excited that you've built in watching fireworks from there beach into your plan!

That is one thing which I did not get done when I actually stayed at the Poly. The temptation to hop on that boat and actually be in the MK for the fireworks was just too big! But since it will be a party night at the MK, it would cost quite a lot of money to see Hallowishes from inside the park, so the beach will be a great substitute. I also think that I will like it much better than the view from the CG or Narcoossee's since it will be centered around the castle. I have quite high expectations!

For me, if I hadn't have built those meals into our schedule, we'd have never left the parks- so in a way, it was forcing me to break away and see them. I am SO glad I did, and will always do that from now on!

Yes, that was my experience as well. It really helps me to slow down. But I feel like this next trip will be much more relaxed than previous trips. I used to be one to go on rides over and over again, but Katharina isn't so much into that (unless it is Big Thunder Mountain in Paris - the best roller coaster Disney ever built! :thumbsup2). So I think this will really help to just enjoy my sourroundings much more and relax, watch people etc.

I think you're right. I don't know about in Germany, but here in the US, Ballroom dancing has seen a big upswing in popularity again. Bek's class was FULL of young guys and gals learning to swing, foxtrot, waltz, etc.... and they all had a great time. I think a band playing those tunes would really add a cool addition- they could play that awesome song from the end of Nemo- Somewhere, Beyond the Sea.

That's interesting. I don't think ballroom dancing here in Germany has a big revival, but then I don't know any 17 year olds... But ballroom dancing here is actually a bit different from US ballroom. There are different dances and especially swing isn't included...

Oh and you mention a song by one of my favourite artists: Somewhere, Beyond the Sea - it is sung by Robbie Williams, an English singer (formerly a member of the boy group Take That) who apparently is basically unknown in the US? Here in Europe he is one of the biggest stars of the last decade. He has a wonderful album - Swing When You Are Winning - which has some old classics as well as some new songs (and one is even a duett with Nicole Kidman). :cloud9:

Then steak you shall have! There's NOTHING wrong with getting something you've looked forward to all year long, is there?? :confused3

You are right!! But I also love trying new things. :confused3

I espeicially look forward to re-visit some of my favourits from last year, but also to give some a second chance to enchant me, like California Grill. I liked the food, I liked the restaurant, but somehow it wasn't really the experience I wanted it to be. I think this was because I was in a cultural shock of being at WDW for the first time. This year will be different, but I still think it is good that we picked a kind of comforting restaurant at a very well known location for us for the first evening (or do you count it as second evening?).

I know what you mean about a second chance... I really hope that Artist Point will be able to wow us! And I am sure you will like CG much better when we are there for the sunset.

And I think Jiko counts as our first evening. Who knows when we will arrive at BWV and I always think that arrival day is only a blur anyway. Which will not prevent me from dragging you into Epcot for Illumination if we have the time for that!! :lmao:

Nice update and I love all your restuarant choices! Poor Katharina with her food intolerances! I hope it all works out well for her. Remember if you don't like something send it back. You're paying a lot of money for those meals and you should get something you like.

Thanks for reminding us to just ask for what we need! :goodvibes But I think we will be allright. So far everything was rather tasty (only this one very unfortunate salad experience at La Cantina in 2008 was really dreadfull...). But I hope Katharina will be a bit more couragous with the chefs when they aren't really making an effort to find somthing which will work for her. And I am determined to ask for the bread - wether Katharina can eat it nor not!! :lmao:

:dance3::cheer2::cheer2::cheer2::yay:

Great restaurant choices! :goodvibes Sometimes you have to give a restaurant a second try.

Thanks!! And I agree - you can't judge a restaurant after only one meal. So the ones which appeal in theory get a second time! :thumbsup2

Looks like you'll be eating very well! I don't have much experience at most of the places you listed--I tend toward the "comfort food" places rather than fine dining experiences. But I do know that we loved both the Kona Cafe and 50's PT for dinner. Of the "want to try" places you listed, the only one I've tried is Liberty Tree Tavern, which I liked quite a bit as well.

Or, you can cancel all of your ADR's and just gorge yourself on Dole Whips all week. I don't see anything wrong with this choice, either.

I can totally understand that people have different tastes! And I think we do have some comfort food places as well. I think Olivia's falls into that category as well, just has a strange location for most travellers. But I don't think eating only Dole Whips for 11 days will make us happy travellers, so I will not follow your suggestion!! :rotfl:

 Woohoo! So happy for you that you got most of the ADRs you wanted. I agree the reservation system can have some kinks in it sometimes, especially for linking reservations and such.

The strange thing is that I haven't been able to open up the +10 days window again after that first success. I still need to make the breakfast ADR for our very last day. But I am not worried since we will be very flexible about time on that one.

Good Morning !! Checking in to see how the plans are shaping !!Don't forget Carol & I will be there with our group of "People "!!!:thumbsup2:banana:

Hi Flossbolna,

your PTR makes me wanna go tomorow:cool1:

nice to see more German Disney fans...

I'm turning 40 next year, which is a year to late for the 40th anniversary celebration:(
But got the idea of doing my birthday, together with a cruise Disney-style as well.

I did my 30th in WDW as well and my parents came along too!

Viel Spass beim planen...
und warten.

Hallo und Willkommen notaprincess!

Are you from Germany as well? It seems like celebrating the 40th birthday at WDW appears to be quite common here on the boards... But I think it is a wonderful idea and combining it with a cruise sounds pretty good to me. :thumbsup2 I originally had thought about including a cruise in my birthday trip as well, but then I ended up spending quite a bit of money on buying DVC points so the cruise will have to wait. I would love to do one of the transatlantic cruises!

Congrats on the successful ADRs!:cool1:

Thanks! :goodvibes

Nice job on the ADRs!!! :woohoo: There is a mixture of ones I have done before, and those I haven't. We ate at Olivia's three times on our previous trip when we stayed at OKW and enjoyed it very much every time. We did dinner twice and breakfast once.

There is a link to my OKW trip report in my siggie, but you might struggle to get through it since I wasn't so well versed in adding Chapter links, :rolleyes1 (it is only about 4 pages long though, so......) I did it pretty much live while we were there and I talked about our meals, but no formal dining reviews or anything. But I'm pretty sure I told what we had and how everyone liked it, so maybe it will help a little.

I am really getting quite excited about Olivias. The more I read about it, the more I think I am really going to enjoy it. I know that you loved OKW and I think I read your report many months ago, but will go back and check what you wrote about the restaurant. Thanks for reminding me of that source! :thumbsup2

So would you say that we should go for breakfast or for lunch (assuming that dinner and lunch menu are somewhat similar)? I think lunch might be more interesting since breakfast is just normal breakfast fare?

Congrats on successful ADR scheduling! You've picked some great meal, many I have never tried so I'm really looking forward to your reviews. I hope they all do great with the allergy issues.

Thanks! I am really looking forward to all our meals as well. And I think since we now know how things work with the special diets, Katharina might be a bit more at ease during those discussions with the chefs.

Great news on your ADR's!:thumbsup2 It's ridiculous how excited I get over my ADR day, like it's Christmas morning or something!

Glad you were able to get everything you wanted and within the time frame you were looking for. What a special treat...going to Disney over your birthday AND it's Disney's 40th anniversay.:woohoo:

I know what you mean about getting excited about ADR day! :lmao: However, I must say that I love the online system, it makes the whole process so much easier!

Congrats on making your ressies !!I am waiting a while for mine as I don't book the trip the TA does and it prolly wont be booked yet, but if I wait till 185 days out I should be able to make them all !!At least I hope so !! I think you don't need to worry about the ADRs. There isn't any free dining in October. So I guess things will be rather relaxed at most restaurants. The only place which seems to nearly fill up at 180 days is 'Ohana (well, of the restaurants on my list, we don't have any real character meals).

Glad you got all your ARD's.

For Ohana's you might want to get there a bit early and then let them know you are trying to catch the fireworks on the beach. Since it is buffet but it served, they bring it to your table so you may want them to pace the meal a bit to get you done by 9:20 or so.

Thanks for the 'Ohana tip! This was kind of what I figured... I have read reports about horrible waits at 'Ohana and I am prepared that things might not work out. But I am determined to not let anything spoil my mood and just take things as they happen. :goodvibes

We have watched the fireworks from 'Ohana's twice. Neither time were we next to a window, but we could see well enough, and the sound was broadcast over the speakers.

Thanks for that info! I was wondering whether it was visible from inside. So this is good to know that if things don't work out, we still will have some fireworks experience! :thumbsup2

Good Morning !! Checking in to see how the plans are shaping !!Don't forget Carol & I will be there with our group of "People "!!!:thumbsup2:banana:

I won't forget that!! We will need to see how our plans work together! :thumbsup2

I know what you mean about getting excited about ADR day! :lmao: However, I must say that I love the online system, it makes the whole process so much easier!

It's true! And I agree with you about the ease of the online ADR system. I love it. It's so much more efficient than having to call.:goodvibes Plus you get those nifty confirmation emails too.

I'm sure Katharina will do great this trip too since she's already had experience with the chefs:thumbsup2. I feel much more confident myself now that I've had one trip with my food allergies. Just remind them that there isn't any dairy in eggs.

Hallo, ja ich bin auch aus Deutschland! But living in the Middle East currently. I do love the idea of DVC, but as I'm not sure about job security, I'm a bit hesitant taking that step. I guess one can always rent points...

Like you said, the option of cruising will be around for a bit. A transatlantic cruise is on my bucket list too. Did it once, but as employee for a smaller cruise line.

have the most magical trip with your sister!:cheer2:

Ladies I am truly sorry for being missing. We got back from our WDW trip on April 8th and I just had so much to catch up on! I am caught up now and think that your ADR's look fantastic! DH and I ate at 'Ohana this last trip and we really enjoyed it!! We had a fantastic view of the Grand Floridian and castle. Heaven!:cloud9: The food was very much to DH's liking, anything meat!! :lmao: One day I will convince him to go to a signature restaurant on Disney property.

I love the pictures so far from Disneyland Paris! I can't wait to see the rest of them!

Oh, and by the way, I will be there the same time as you two. October 16-21!

That is one thing which I did not get done when I actually stayed at the Poly. The temptation to hop on that boat and actually be in the MK for the fireworks was just too big! It is a great view, almost better than being inside the park. You get the music piped in on the beach, scoot toward the speakers to really hear it well. I grab a drink to go from the Tamu bar and grab a lounge chair or the swing and relax and enjoy. I think you will be pleased even with your high expectations.

WOOT!!! All the ADRs you wanted! Cool Beans!! I just love your lineup!

Good Morning !! I really impressed myself as I could translate the piece of German !!I guess my High School German has stuck a little !!:lmao:So I should have started this with "Guten Tag":rotfl2:

I thought I might show you some pictures of what we did last weekend!
We met up with our parents at a tiny village in the forest. We met in this tiny village, because there is one of the best restaurants in Bavaria, at least that's what we think.
IMGP2270.jpg

Before our parents moved to Nuremberg they lived not really close but closer to the restaurant, and we would go there for special events and celebrations for something like twenty years. Ee all miss the food and thought it would be nice to have a family weekend in one of their holiday flats with some hiking and good food.

But I don’t want to tell you about the food but about our hikes. The weather was very nice and the landscape and scenery felt like home. Our dad picked some really nice tracks and I think we all enjoyed it very much. I brought back some pictures, because the hikes were also kind of historical.
On Friday we actually took more just a short walk and crossed the boarder to the Czech Republic:

From the German side
IMGP2271.jpg

From the Czech side
IMGP2272.jpg

I get always a little teary eyed crossing on one of these boarder points for walkers without any boarder control. I remember what it was like there before 1990: we would have been shot! And then I would remember even more backwards to the time when there was a boarder but without a checkpoint and when there would have been quite a lot of traffic to the village on the other side and further on. Now there is just nature on the other side for some kilometers, as the communist regime in Czechoslovakia destroyed all the villages along very large strips of the boarder in order to have an unpopulated security strip. At moments like this I am very grateful for the time we live in, we have different problems now, also very very big problems, but it still seems like a miracle to me that the Iron curtain fell.

On Saturday we went on a much longer hike and one part took as along the boarder again, we walked on a very very old way, called pig beater way, and suddenly realized that we were “nowhere”, as the Czech boarder posts were on our left side and the Bavarian ones on our right side. You can see it maybe on the picture, a white pole on the right and a tiny white stone on the left.

IMGP2277.jpg

Wow, Katharina, those are amazing trails! It really does make you appreciate what we have! Thanks for sharing!

Beautiful! Thank you for sharing. I remember watching the news when the Iron Curtain fell. I was in college, sitting alone in my apartment watching the excitement occur and I cried like a baby - from happiness. I was surprised at the impact it had on me.

So, was the food as good as you remembered?

Going back to such a historical spot like this makes me feel eerie. Even when I went to the Titanic exhibit in Vegas and seeing those artifacts gives me the shivers. I am very thankful things are the way they are right now even though there are still problems that should be resolved. C'est la vie
