Ad matched in a new way today...

We were in Wal-Mart to pick up a few things before leaving town for a long weekend (opening day, here we come!). We wanted to get Tangled for DD to watch in the car, but the location we were in did *not* have it on sale.

We were going to put it back and just buy it at Target instead...Target is much further away than our nearest Wal-Mart and thus not as convenient, but we can swing by on our way to the highway. Anyway, I tell DH to wait so I can pull up the Target ad on my Droid phone to make sure it is on sale there.

Sure enough, I get the ad pulled up to show the $24.99 price and I go to put the movie back on the rack...DH says, well why don't we just try to price match it since we are already here. The cashier had no problems with it...she just looked at the ad on my phone and gave me the sale price.

I'm not sure why I never thought of doing that before! I've only had the phone since Christmas, but I use it all the time. DH says I'll never have to worry about carting around newspapers again!

It's awesome. I have all my little store key chain tags on my phone. There is a key ring app for it. I also have a bar code scanner app. I can scan a barcode and it tells me the price of it at other stores.

I already have an app called CardStar for my "rewards" cards (i.e., grocery, BRU, etc.), but I'd love to know the barcode scanner one!

The rewards card one is called "Key Ring". The other one is called "ShopSavvy". "Barcodescanner" is another good one.

I use Key Ring but there are others out there.
It has worked great for me.

I use the keyring app also, but beware, make sure that it works at your store before you get rid of your key tags. At my local supermarket that I always shop at the scanners can't scan from the phones. They don't know why it won't work, but it doesn't at all....sooo frustrating.

Does your phone have a cover on it? I know some keyrings don't work on my iphone because of the metal cover.

I wouldn't be so sure. Target stores do not do price matching with Target.com. This is from their website:

Price Matching at Target.com
Pricing for products on Target.com may vary from Target stores and from the Target Weekly Ad. We do not match the price of our online merchandise with the price offered by Target stores or another company, and Target stores do not match the price of our online merchandise.

You were just lucky enough to get a cashier who didn't know the policy. I wouldn't count on that happening again.

BTW, many stores with an online presence have the same policy.

They pulled up the Target AD (not online price) and used that to match at Walmart (which does price match, although some items can be tricky). They didn't just catch an employee that didn't know what they were doing, it went the way it should as far as I can tell.

I've used my phone to price match a toys r us ad before. The cashier just asked to see that it was an actual ad and the dates on it. Very nice when you forget to take the newspaper ad with you and you remember it being on sale someplace else.

Amazon has a barcode scanner in its app too. I used it at a local electronics store and they price matched a pair of headphones for my gamer brother... ended up saving almost $50

I decided to drive over and pick it up and sure enough in store it was more than double the price!!! ($75 online - $199 in store!!) They would not price match from their own online store after showing them the site on my phone. They made me order online with in store pickup and stand around while they fulfilled the order. Crazy, but I was glad I had my smartphone to be able to save $125.

Walmart wouldn't even do that for us. My wife was buying a camera, $299 in store, $199 online. We would have had to order online at home (no phone to do so in store) and have it actually delivered to the store. Even if we had an internet phone, they wouldn't have allowed us to just take the one from the store. It had to be ordered, then delivered to the store.

She walked and bought it at Target for $199 (which we didn't know to price match and wouldn't have anyways.)

I've seen people try to price match at Wal-Mart by pulling up the ad on their phone, it didn't work. Every time I've done it, they actually kept the ad to put in the register. I guess so they know why the item was marked down, and the actual cost at the other store.
Many times, online prices can not be matched in the store, even if they offer instore pick up 2hrs after you order it online (like with Best Buy).

This did not work for my sister at Target. She tried to price match a game that was on sale at Toys R Us at Target by showing the ad on her phone and the cashier at Target wanted the physical ad. She ended up just driving to the Toys R Us, which was further away.

I'm a cashier at Giant and have only seen one customer use the phone app that has their bonus card to scan. But he informed me that I had to use the price gun to scan it as the regular belt scanner wouldnt work on it. The handheld gun did scan it fine we assumed it was cause it had a stronger laser.
