Everything Old Is New Again! - A Dec 2010 Trip Report : THE FINAL ENTRY page 45

Madison has that 'did I do that' look... LOL
More of a "Yeah, I did it, but I'm too cute to get in trouble for it" look. I'm sure you're familiar with it.

Look at it this way... you get to keep someone employed by making a mess! :thumbsup2
Good point! Economic stimulation!

Did he have enough pennies for the tip?
I barely had enough pennies for the tip:sad2:
Great update... so when is the next one? popcorn::popcorn::
:confused3
Sorry to hear about your grandfather. I hope the weather will be done there by the weekend for you and your family. :grouphug:

I'll echo Tim's thoughts here. :grouphug:
Thanks guys.

I see no good reason why you have not had an update. You are currently just sitting on the couch watching TV. Get on with it. At this rate you will have to do two in a row.
Really? You posted this at 8:09 pm Central Time on Feb 6. Right smack dab in the middle of the Super Bowl. That the Packers are playing in. And winning. That's a good reason.

I'm sorry it has been a difficult week.

What is up with Barry's Packers? I hate to admit I'm actually cheering for them being a diehard Bears fan, but I hate the Steelers.

I hope you and the house don't blow into the lake.

The house is still standing, but it might just all the snow piled up around it holding it up. I'll let you know in the spring if it can hold itself up. :scared1:

OK, after my way-to-long absence from the Boards, I'm back ready to finish off the day. There probably won't be a lot of narrative in this post, just a bunch of pictures.

When I last left you, Evan had just taken care of the bill at Chef Mickey's, and we were heading back out to the parking lot.

Someone staying at the Contemporary had some Christmas Cheer:

We made it back to the Tree House Villas (yay! The keys still work!) When we checked in, we were told that we could only have one vehicle over at the Villas, and any additional cars would have to be parked over at the Grandstand section of Saratoga Springs. From there, we could either take the walking trail back or catch an internal bus. I decided to drop everyone off, park the car and walk back myself. Being the considerate gentlemen that I am, I didn't want to inconvenience anyone else by making them walk.
That, and I wanted to take pictures with my new f1.8 50mm lens. :ssst:

I had a general idea where the trail started, but it still took me a little while to actually find it. I thought it was off the pool area, but it was one more building to the north. It was a beautiful night at Disney World (but really, what night isn't?)

Most of the light poles around the Tree Houses were decorated for Christmas. There were lit bells and trees on other poles, but none of those pictures turned out very good.

Several people took it upon themselves to decorate their villas. I wish I thought of that. I have a few thousand lights at home that could have made the trip...especially since I'm not paying for the electricity. :)
IMG_3156.JPG

The walk took about 30 minutes, but that was with a lot of stopping for picture taking and one wrong turn that sent me back to where I started. Oops. But I finally made it back to our deck...
IMG_3161.JPG

...and our door.

By the time I got back, Bambi already had the kids in their PJs. I gave them a good night kiss and told them to get some good sleep, because...

Coming Up Next: Finally, a Park Day! Magic Kingdom!

Luvin your trip report. Your kiddies are cuties

I'm surprised the kids didn't talk you into another ride around on the monorail. :lmao:

What a great 'relaxing' end to your day... strolling back to the villa.

Ooooh, I can't wait to see what you did on your MK day. popcorn::popcorn::

I read your update to Juliana and showed her the pictures of the kids at CMs. She wanted to leave you guys a little 'gift'. From Ana:

We were all getting pretty tired by that time and ready to get back and relax.

It was nice out that evening. And with as much as I ate at Chef Mickey's, I could have walked all the way from the Contemporary and had some calories to spare. :sad2:

I believe I ran into and old friend that day...:thumbsup2

I love it!! Thank you so much Ana!
(Although I'm a bit confused with the hourglass, but I'll take it anyway!)

Awesome job with the new camera lens, Barry. The pictures are beautiful.
Thank you! I just held the camera and pushed the button. It did most of the work. :rotfl2:

I hope to get a fast fifty for my birthday next month - those lenses are MADE for portraits. :)
I was talking to a professional photographer at a wedding last fall. She had a huge lens. She said it was a 50mm f1.2, and she saved for quite a while to get it ($1600!) She told me the f1.8 was much smaller, and although not as fancy, still took very good pictures. And for $99, much easier on the wallet. I'm certainly happy with it. :thumbsup2

Great pictures of the walk back to the villa. I always appreciate good quality photography, I've just never been responsible for any.;)

We've been eyeing up that 50mm lens for our camera. So what do you think of it, now that you had the chance to use it? I think the pictures look good. Supposedly it's great for portraits and night shots, right?

Looking forward to the MK... popcorn::

Like the night shots and the walk to the treehouses.
I had an opportunity to walk that path last Sept.
I hope to one day stay in those treehouses too. :yay:

Ooooh Oooooh I know who it was!!!!!!!

Christopher! :lmao::lmao::lmao:
that's nice!

Great pictures of the walk back to the villa. I always appreciate good quality photography, I've just never been responsible for any.;)
Thanks. The main reason we decided to upgrade to a DSLR was for the speed - with our old point and shoot, between the the time we'd push the button to take a picture of the kids and the camera actually taking the picture, the kids would have moved on to bigger and better things - leaving us with a few hundred shots of the back of their heads.
A bonus is that it takes some pretty nice pictures. :)

I really like it. It's odd not having a zoom, so it's not really the best for everyday use, but it's very good at what it does. You saw the night shots, hear are a few portraits I took the day I got it:

Thanks. The walk is really pretty cool, isn't it? Some of those treehouses are really buried in the trees - you don't even know they're there until you're just about past them.

Mandatory Trip Report Element:
As defined in Article II, Section D, Subsection Beta, Paragraph 4, line 12c of the International Trip Report Treaty of 1967 (Ratified by the United Nations Vacation Council*, 1968, Amended 1973, 1988, and 2006), I am hereby including this "Cute kids, worn out by a day at Disney, sleeping soundly, and about to be rudely woken up, fed, dressed and herded out to another fun-filled day in the parks" picture:

IMG_3164.JPG

*Delaware, still riding high on their "first to ratify the Constitution" victory, tried to be the first entity to ratify this treaty, until France pointed out that as a state, they don't have any representatives in the UN. Not to be dismayed, Delaware left and immediately ratified Omaha, Nebraska's Lincoln Elementary School "Wear a Hat to School Day" petition.

I'd like to say our morning went just about as smoothly as one can imagine, but that wouldn't make for a very good trip report, now would it? But considering we had 5 adults and 2 kids to get ready for a day at the Magic Kingdom, we didn't do to bad. The plan was to see if the CM that checked us in knew what she was talking about or not - that the Tree Houses had their own bus service directly to the parks. I had a strong feeling she was wrong, but she was insistent, so we thought we'd give it a try.

After a hearty breakfast of Blueberry Muffin French Toast (thank you Diners, Drive-ins and Dives for that idea :thumbsup2) whipped up in the Tree House kitchen, Evan and I were the first two out the door. I took a few shots outside the Tree House and of the 17th hole of Disney's Lake Buena Vista Golf Course - which was litterally right outside our living room window.

It didn't take long, and everyone was ready to head to the bus stop and test that CM's statement. As luck would have it, we were only a few steps from the bus stop. And with in a minute or two, a bus pulled up, and about 3 seconds after that, we found out that she did indeed not know what she was talking about. I wasn't upset so much as disappointed. I knew from other TRs and websites that the only bus service to the Tree Houses took you back to Saratoga Springs, where you would then have to catch another bus to a park or DTD. But I still have the tiniest sliver of hope that something had changed in the past month or so. But alas, it didn't. Sooooo.....

Plan B!

We didn't want to try the 2-bus system on this day since it was our first park day with lots of expectations of fun. Two buses is not our idea of first day fun. So we hopped into the cars and drove over to MK.

Despite our brief hold up with the bus, we arrived just in time catch the Rope Drop show:

That morning I had been texting another DisDad - GorshGoofy. The sea of humanity finally parted just enough once we cleared the train station to meet up for a quick picture. It was great to meet you, Ray!:
IMG_3184.JPG

(Oddly enough, I'm wearing that same green shirt today as I type this. Heavy stuff, huh?)

Anyway, on the walk to the MK, Kaylene caught the edge of a little hole with her foot and twisted her leg. I didn't see it, but it sounded like she went down hard on one of her two already-bad knees. She went off to the bathroom to survey the damage. The kids were getting a little itchy to go for a ride, when this guy pulled up.
IMG_3185.JPG

The kids ran up the stairs and got front and center for the drive to the castle. Bambi stayed back with Kaylene while Dean, Carol and I went for a ride. It was a very unique vantage point to see Main Street and the Christmas decorations.

IMG_3197.JPG

The kids climbed down and asked if they could sit up front for a picture.
IMG_3200.JPG

I still had not heard from the girls, so we wandered around a bit and caught some of the Main Street singers. Anything with singing and dancing, and Madison is in her element!
IMG_3204.JPG

As you can see, it's a chilly day at the Magic Kingdom. Grandma was very concerned that the kids were too cold and went off to the Emporium to get some hats.

Photopass Time!
Photo0036FourBySix.jpg

We wandered around a bit, but the kids really couldn't wait any longer. I mean, an you imagine being taken to the Magic Kingdom and told to wait around. Torture! So, Grandpa & I took them over to Peter Pan's Flight. The standby line was surprisingly short so we jumped in line.

Meanwhile, Kaylene's knee was rough, but walkable. Her and Bambi stopped for a few Photopass pictures on the way to Fantasyland

Coming Up
Will we finally get everyone back together again?

(Spoiler Alert: yes)

I really like this picture. Does the flash make a difference in your eyes?

Allow me to butt in here for a minute:

The flash has a bounce card built into it that allows you aim it skyward to fill the room with light while also bouncing some of it forward providing flat light for portrait shots in 90% of your shots. Since flat light (ie: no or very few shadows) is desirable in almost all standard portrait shots, this is a very handy thing to have. In fact, the only reason I can offer to upgrade to the 580EX-II is if you need to cover a wider area in most of your shots. For most portrait (and home) photography, this is not the case. A 430EX-II is the best all-around flash you can get. If you wish, however, to upgrade to a fancy multi-light system using Canon flashes you will need the 580 but as that's cost prohibitive for most people, I'd recommend using one of these two (one, two) kits. They're much less expensive, come with some great parts, and while they're not TTL (automatic) flashes, with a little work you can learn to use them on your own to acheive the lighting you want. Oh, and by reading this.

Wow, that was a brave move bringing legalese into a trip report. I think you might have offset the blah, blah, yada, yada factor when you started bashing Delaware though.:lmao::thumbsup2

Nice update and I enjoyed the pictures as always. I'd hate to be dealing with a knee injury at WDW... from the photopass picture she doesn't look to be in too much pain though. Hopefully she can still manage to have a good time.

:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

And this explains why I didn't include one of these pictures in my TR. We're Delaware. Ignoring the Law since 1787.

Also, my kids always get up at the crack of dawn. :faint:

French toast, golf, Disney resorts...is this heaven? :confused3

You're obviously not up with the times. This screams lawsuit! :sad2:

Like father, like daughter! :thumbsup2

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there's a Constitutional amendment prohibiting that.

Looks like a good start to the day...well, except for Kaylene. Hope she was ok.

Thanks Ian! Good stuff. By the way, we gave my daughter your Spaceship Earth picture for her birthday, and she loved it. I believe she said it was "Cool." :thumbsup2 We'll hang it up in her bedroom this weekend.

Now what did Delaware do to you? Don't make me start bashing Indiana. After all, we named the dog Indiana.

I think it stems from a post I put up on FB last week. I was at a public workshop and a guy was arguing that we don't have to follow Federal law, because we're Delaware and we were here first. I've asked AJRitz to look into the legal precedent on that argument. :confused3 :sad2:

Delaware hasn't done a thing to me... notice I'm not the one talking smack about your fine state... I just think that it is rather humorous.:lmao:

I remember seeing something about that on FB last week. I actually got on FB a few times while I was stuck at home for a couple of days. I guess the inverse of that logic would be something along the lines of Hawaii not having to recognize the Bill of Rights because they weren't a state yet, and therefore had no input on those laws.:confused3
