The Moist Exhausting Free Trip Ever - Link to Part II Thread pg. 244

Day 4 - Part 4

As described in the last chapter, Lauren and I returned from our quick ride on the Tower of Terror elevators and rejoined the rest of the family at the doors to enter American Idol, where tonight's performance would be "PChef Idol". There were a few television screens hanging from the ceiling with the American Idol logo displayed, and I took a picture knowing full well that I’d want to put it in my trip report.

IMG_3096.jpg

Then a cameraman and an interviewer-guy came out to shoot some footage to be used later in the show. They interviewed a little boy who provided some appropriately cute comment that I can’t remember now. Then the interviewer told the crowd that one of the contestant’s names is someone-or-other and on the count of three he wanted us all to yell, “We love you someone-or-other!” and scream “Wooo!”. We, like good sheep, followed directions and were filmed screaming in support of someone-or-other. (I think that’s how a certain Vice Presidential candidate got her start too, but I digress.) I figured that they would ask us to do the same thing for the other contestants, but no, after they got that footage they went back inside.

I mentioned in the previous chapter that the husband of one of Judy’s down-line directors was going to be in the show. While Lauren and I were off doing Tower of Terror, Judy saw the wife of this guy and she (the wife) was disappointed that she didn’t have a better camera, so Judy told her that I had a good camera and would be happy to take lots of pictures. So, now I had a mission, as if I needed any more motivation than writing this trip report. Step 1: Get a good seat. Step 2: Take lots of pictures.

As the doors opened, we realized that we had a slight problem. The bad thing about being first in line at these Disney shows is that when you enter the theater you have to go all the way across, to the end of the row. Not a good seat for taking pictures. So we, kind of on purpose, hemmed and hawed over which row we wanted, and let other people go past. Then we picked a row about 4 or 5 rows from the front, moved across to the next available seats, and were pretty close to the middle. Heh, heh, heh.

I decided that I’d need to put my zoom lens on the camera for the show, but before I did, I took one last shot with the regular lens to give you a sense of what the stage looked like.

IMG_3097.jpg

Pretty soon a guy came out to warm up the crowd. He reminded us of Spencer, Carly’s older brother on the Nickelodeon show “iCarly” (for all you folks with ‘tween-aged kids). He was pretty hilarious. He showed us how we could show our appreciation to the performers.

IMG_3098.jpg

IMG_3099.jpg

IMG_3102.jpg

IMG_3104.jpg

Somewhere in the midst of all that I took a picture of the AI sign.

IMG_3105.jpg

Then the warm-up guy showed us how to work the voting buttons. He sat down in the front row and we could see him on the monitor. He demonstrated several techniques, such as “the hammer”, which had the elbow staying stationary as a pivot point and the index-finger coming down upon the buttons in a hammer-like fashion. Then there was “the crossover” where the left hand was used to push the buttons on the right-hand armrest, as demonstrated in this picture of the monitor.

IMG_3106.jpg

I forget the name of the next method, but it was probably the “buddy system” or something like that, where you get your neighbor to push a button for you. The lady next to him wasn’t cooperating and wouldn’t look at him. It was a hoot.

IMG_3107.jpg

The last thing the warm-up guy did was to pick a guy out of the crowd who was designated to stand up and yell “What’re you talkin’ about judge?!” if there was a negative review that the audience disagreed with.

Then the show started. I liked our host much better than Ryan Seacrest.

IMG_3108.jpg

Although, she looks like a fembot in this picture (I’m talking “Bionic Woman” fembots, not “Austin Powers” fembots, just for clarity).

IMG_3109.jpg

They showed some video of the tryouts and the cute kid outside the theater before the doors opened, but we didn’t see Marlene in the video montage. She was okay with it.

Then they brought the contestants out.

IMG_3111.jpg

The guy we were rooting for worked the crowd when he was introduced.

IMG_3112.jpg

And then they brought in the judges. “Paula” kind of looked like Paula, and really acted whacky, so she was good. “Simon” didn’t look a whole lot like Simon, but was good at playing the part of a jerk, so he was pretty good. The “Randy” guy had me doing double-takes. He looked and sounded like Randy; I almost thought they got the real one to appear.

IMG_3113.jpg

IMG_3117.jpg

This first lady sang “Colors Of The Wind” from the Disney movie, "Pocahontas".

IMG_3120.jpg

The “Paula” judge said, “When you sing, baby angels fly out of your mouth carrying PChef corn cob knobs.” That got a big laugh from the crowd.

I don’t remember what “Simon” said exactly, but the guy in the audience had an opportunity to jump up and yell, “What’re you talkin’ about judge?!”

Then came our guy. (Get ready for a whole bunch of pictures. I was on a mission, remember?)

IMG_3121.jpg

And they briefly showed his wife and kids on the monitor.

IMG_3122.jpg

The music started and he tried to get the crowd into it. He sang “I Don’t Want To Be” by Gavin DeGraw.

IMG_3123.jpg

IMG_3126.jpg

IMG_3127.jpg

This one’s a little blurry, but I thought it was pretty cool with the cameraman in the shot.

IMG_3128.jpg

IMG_3129.jpg

IMG_3130.jpg

When he was done, it was time to hear from the judges.

IMG_3133.jpg

“Randy” said something that started with “Dog”, ended with “dog”, and had “dog” in the middle.

IMG_3134.jpg

IMG_3135.jpg

“Paula” said, “It was organic!”

IMG_3136.jpg

IMG_3138.jpg

IMG_3139.jpg

And “Simon” said, “That’s the music I listen to when I’m running the garbage disposal.”

IMG_3140.jpg

I think our audience guy stood up again to yell at “Simon” and in this picture Simon is hitting him with a comeback zinger.

IMG_3141.jpg

Before he departs the stage, our guy reminds us which number to push on our voting contraptions. Twenty-two, got it!

IMG_3143.jpg

Then we have our next contestant. She sang “Our Song” by Taylor Swift. I only know that because I googled the lyrics coming up in a photo further down.

IMG_3145.jpg

IMG_3146.jpg

I ignored the scorn of the audience members behind me and took a picture of the monitor on the back wall that the singer’s had to prompt them with the lyrics.

IMG_3149.jpg

“Paula” said, “I just wanna pinch your cheeks and feed you pud’n.”

And then we had contestant number 4. She sang “Bubbly” by Colbie Caillat.

IMG_3151.jpg

IMG_3152.jpg

Sorry, I can’t remember any more quotes from the judges.

Oops, spoke too soon. I just found one more in the margin of my notes. For someone, I don’t remember who, “Paula” said, “Your singing makes me want to throw up, but in a good way!”

Anyway, they brought out the final contestant, who happened to be the woman we all cheered for before we entered the theater. The host told her she had a lot of fans and they showed the video of the crowd cheering.

She sang “Black Velvet”, which was a #1 hit for Alannah Myles in 1989 (thank you Wikipedia). (Also, per Wikipedia, the lyrics are about Elvis Presley…I did not know that!)

IMG_3156.jpg

Wow! This woman could sing.

IMG_3157.jpg

The judges soaking it in.

IMG_3158.jpg

Her last note brought the house down.

They brought all of the contestants back out and showed snippets of each performance.

IMG_3159.jpg

IMG_3160.jpg

We voted, and I think I used “the hammer” technique. We all voted along party lines, meaning we voted for “our guy”, (however we all thought that the last lady was the best).

Time to announce the winner. It as so suspenseful.

IMG_3161.jpg

Would it be our guy?

IMG_3163.jpg

No.

It came down to contestants 1 and 5.

Normally, the winners of American Idol here at DHS have a chance to compete in the actual American Idol. In fact, they mentioned that someone who competed at DHS made it to the top 10 on the show recently. But not tonight. The winner of “PChef Idol” would win a gift basket. That’s waaaay better!

IMG_3165.jpg

Suspense is building…

IMG_3166.jpg

And the winner is…

Contestant #5!!!

IMG_3167.jpg

IMG_3168.jpg

IMG_3169.jpg

The presentation of that much-coveted gift basket.

IMG_3170.jpg

And the contestants and judges chit-chatted as it ended.

IMG_3171.jpg

We saw “our guy” outside of the theater afterwards, and he was really pumped. He absolutely loved his experience singing in front of a crowd. From the screen on the back of my camera I showed him some of the pictures I took and he was really happy with them and surprised that I had done that. I sent them a cd of the pictures shortly after we returned home.

I must say that the American Idol Experience was really cool. I am not a fan of American Idol…I probably spent more time watching "PChef Idol" than all of the time that I’ve spent watching American Idol put together, but I wouldn’t hesitate to catch this show again on a day that I’m in the park. The set was great and the production value was top-notch with the video they were capturing and displaying around the theater. I didn't think I'd say this, but I highly recommend it!

Great update Glen (and you got it up before I did mine ;)). I'm not a fan of American Idol at all, but you've convinced me I should try the one at DHS the next time we visit. Sorry your guy didn't win.

I think the best singer won, so that was okay.

Um, no Judy count?

Great update...but what sticks out most is how much I hate...no loathe...the song Black Velvet! It's one of those songs that was over played and I'm sure that it is a chart topper in Karaoke hell.

Ok, I feel better after getting that off my chest.

The AI experience is interesting...I don't know if I would go with out knowing one of the contestants.

I think Jordan and D Jay should do a Duet !!!!:rotfl2:How about some idea for a song ?????:rotfl2::rotfl2:

I've never really played the Judy count. But I think I saw her in 1 picture, so I'll say 1 Judy.

Oooh, no. There was a chance that she could have been in that one of the stage, before I went to the zoom lens, but nope. I tried to help you!

No Judy's !!!!!!
Great pix of American Idol though!!!!

Rosie, you did more than beat Marv this time....you are the big winner for this round!

"Karaoke hell" is redundant, just like "sewage duty".

But, I hear ya. It's not my kind of music either.

Ok, I feel better after getting that off my chest.

It's okay. Breathe. Take deep cleansing breaths. Okay, all better now.

The AI experience is interesting...I don't know if I would go with out knowing one of the contestants.

That's what I thought too, but after seeing it I don't think I'd mind catching it even if I didn't know a contestant.

I think Jordan and D Jay should do a Duet !!!!:rotfl2:How about some idea for a song ?????:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Hmmm, I'll have to think about that one.

Never seen Idol, prolly never will. But glad you got to see it, and I have to say your lens worked REALLY well at getting some really clear shots.

Looked like a lot of fun. We have watched it a few times, but never knew any of the contestants....that has to put a whole other spin on it. Sorry your guy didn't win, but it looks like he enjoyed himself.

I think it adds quite a lot to the attraction if you are there with a group. Even though you did not know everyone, you still all belonged together. I think this must have improved the experience.

But I have heard quite a lot of comments from people who said that they actually really enjoyed the shoe. Supposedly the best show is always the last show of the day. I have followed the German version of American Idol, it is called Deutschland sucht den Superstar, but is mainly just called DSDS and means "Germany is looking for the super-star".

Then the warm-up guy showed us how to work the voting buttons.

I don't recommend reading your TR after Liesa's, I had to read this sentence twice, the first time I read vomitting.

She sang “Black Velvet”, which was a #1 hit for Alannah Myles in 1989

That's the only song of them that I know and would have recognized, it was played a little bit too often on German radio stations as well.

It seems like you had a lot of fun! This is good to know, I have watched the German version only once with my couisins, but I'm afraid I might have to attend the show in case I ever make it to DWD again with my sister...

I think this would end with them being banned from disney for life.:rotfl2:

The last straw, huh?

The problem is the music won't be out of our mouths, and most people would be sick after THAT noise.:lmao::lmao::lmao:

:scared1:

I'm a winner !!!!!! Hear that Marv !!!!!:rotfl2:

You've always been a winner Rosie.

D Jay I for one would vote for the 2 of you!!!!!:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Even if they sang a little flat(ulent)?

Never seen Idol, prolly never will. But glad you got to see it, and I have to say your lens worked REALLY well at getting some really clear shots.

Thank you! I was really happy with the pictures.

I was surprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did. Our guy was super-psyched afterwards.

I think it adds quite a lot to the attraction if you are there with a group. Even though you did not know everyone, you still all belonged together. I think this must have improved the experience.

I'm sure it does add a lot to it, having someone to root for.

Interesting how they re-create these shows all over the world.

I don't recommend reading your TR after Liesa's, I had to read this sentence twice, the first time I read vomitting.

:rotfl2: Just a couple of letters can really alter the meaning!

That's the only song of them that I know and would have recognized, it was played a little bit too often on German radio stations as well.

You probably know the one from Pocahontas, don't you?

I'll bet the others would have been familiar to you also. They were very popular on the radio the last couple of years.

Kind of an interesting story about when I was about to post the installment last night. I couldn't remember all of the songs that were performed...I knew the one from Pocahontas and Black Velvet, and I had the one in the middle because I googled the lyrics that I had in the picture. I asked the girls if they remembered what our guy sang, and the 4th contestant. Nobody could remember our guys, but after talking a little bit they remembered some lyrics from the 4th contestants and we found the song through google.

I couldn't believe that I'd have all of the songs for this chapter except the guy we were rooting for. I was about to give up, but I typed into google "american idol songs for guys". One of the sites that came up was a top 10 list. I looked at it, and recognized that the 3rd one listed was the song that our guy sang. Just more proof that you can find anything on the internet!

It seems like you had a lot of fun! This is good to know, I have watched the German version only once with my couisins, but I'm afraid I might have to attend the show in case I ever make it to DWD again with my sister...

Yes, it was a good time. I don't think you have to watch the show on TV before seeing at DHS.

Wow, your pics from Idol turned out GREAT!

We've had that warm-up guy before! He is hilarious, isn't he?! And we've had the "fem-bot" and the "Paula" judge, but never have seen the Randy or the Simon you had. Wow, they sure found someone to play the Randy part well!

Oooh, I wish I was there! I love Taylor Swift! I always hope that someone will sing her when we're there and they never do. Darn it.

Sounds like you guys had fun.
But the question is would you care if you didn't have anything at stake?
That is, if your family hadn't tried out and you didn't have someone else to root for, would it be as much fun?
