How to deal with the "You're going to Disney again?" people

Exactly! I don't think that it's a jealousy/envy thing, either. I have learned in these past few months that no matter how hard I try to "sell" Disney (Even just talking about it in glowing terms), there are some people who just won't budge. Some people are very interested and enthusiastically ask questions and then there are the GRUMPS. I just change the subject and move on.

I think the question that annoys me more is the "aren't you guys to old for Disney?" WE are not lie down and relax on a beach type of people. After day one we would get pretty bored. We don't go to Disney every year because that would get boring for us. We do plan to go every 5 years to celebrate our anniversary. Now that we have a daughter we get to see Disney through her eyes as well. I say "GOOD DAY" to those who question it.

It's killing my MIL that we're going on. When we told her she first asked why we were going again. Why not go somewhere else, etc. I told her we liked it. Then she starts spouting off about money and how expensive it is and don't we need to save that money for the kids' college education. Like it's her business in the first place.

I personally don't care what others say or think about what we do on our family vacation.

We leave in a month for our fourth trip this year. Two weeks in January/February, a week in May, a last minute trip in July, now a week for MNSSHP. To top that off we are moving there in November. Well by November. Talk about strange looks.

My coworkers and family say this to us all the time. My ex-stepmother, who vacationed in the white mountains of NH every single solitary year, always made fun of us for it. My brother in law doesn't get it and he goes to Paradise Island every other year. And the funniest part is, the majority of people who ask us this - never take a vacation anywhere! They'll have a mini weekend getaway maybe once every other year somewhere local, but still take their vacations to "get things done around the house". I want to ask the obvious questions in retort but I prefer to keep the peace and not be rude.

Though I'm sure I'd really LOVE to squander my vacation days painting the back deck instead of going to Disney Makes sense no?

We have discovered that people like this that spend their vacation time cleaning, painting, fixing, etc., "around the house" are not very organized in the first place. They can't seem to figure out how to plan anything let alone any kind of vacation. One of our friends that is like this REALLY should be on that TV show "Messy House" or some show like that. I Can't remember the name of the TV show because I don't watch much TV. I watch the Disney Vacation Secrets Revealed DVD or the Annual Disney Vacation Planning DVD (which I order each year to get the latest version ).

Maybe so, however; I am the only one that comes back from my vacations with a smile on my face and no one EVER asks if I had a good time (They don’t ask because they have heard the answer many times before and can’t bear to hear how miserable their lives are compared to mine. One coworker actually said that one time.). Sitting around the office complaining that my back hurts because of all the "get things done around the house" I did isn’t a vacation to me. I keep up the house a little bit every day so I don't have to spend an entire week or weekend doing it.

Even my 7yo DD gets it from her teachers at school. “You are going to Disney again? Don’t you want to go someplace better?” She told them one time that there is no place better to spend time with her mommy and daddy. Don’t that warm your heart a bit?

I usually follow up with "because we like it" and then say "Why do you go to the beach every year?"

All I know is, vacation is vacation. We had fun in Hawaii, and would love to go back, but it's not near as affordable as Disney. So I say, bring on the vacation, the relaxation, pools, Mickey Bars (which incidentally I've been craving this entire pregnancy, thank GOD they are far away in Florida lol), and ENJOY!

Actually it is a private school and they turn their noses up at Disney and just about anything that doesn’t give them more money. They claim we are “Paying Homage to the Rat” instead of donating more to the school. Go figure… It is a better education than public schools could ever give her. Hmmm… We could go to Disney more if she went to publ…… OOPs! Started dreaming again…

Just found this thread and had to laugh. We get that response all the time. I asked my sister "Why is it OK for you to go to Aspen every year and not for us to go to WDW every couple years?" She just said "well there are other places to go" I told her as soon as she skipped an Aspen trip I would consider looking for another vacation (I didn't tell her that vacation would be a Disney Cruise)

I love the immersion of Disney. I can honestly forget the rest of the world for 10-12 days and just focus on my family. Our lives have been a roller coaster for the past 2 years and taking 12 days to reconnect with my hubby, sons, and my older son's fiancée is the best Christmas present I can give us all.

Of course, the way I look at it, is when you go to WDW, you also get to go to China, Britain, Japan, Germany, Mexico, France, and depending on what resort you stay at you can even throw in the Caribbean, New Orleans, and the list goes on!!!

Thankfully though, my fellow Disers, we have each other to understand us!

: So, we got back from WDW last Sunday and by Monday, DH and I were already planning our February 2011 trip. And somebody pinch me ... DH told me tonight at dinner to do research about a WDW Resort (We've stayed at a condo in Kissimmee the last 2 years)!! But I digress.

This week, we've been telling various family members and friends about our recent WDW trip. Somewhere in the course of the conversation we will casually add, "We're going back next year." We're usually met with stunned silence and then the old "You're going back to Disney again? Why? You've already been."

The first few times, it was easy to explain: "Well, all of us love it there (DD and DS, too), we only really get one vacation a year and this is where we want to go ..." After the fourth or fifth time of explaining, I was starting to get irritated.

My biggest irritation is that the majority of the people who were giving us the third degree about going to Disney yet again, are the same people who choose to vacation in the same spot every year: Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, the Jersey Shore, etc. A family member pushed me to the brink this morning and I finally asked, "Well, why do you go back to such and such every year?" She explained that such and such is beautiful, she's the happiest when she's there, she's relaxed ... Well, that's EXACTLY how my family feels about Disney! After that, the family member changed the subject. Well, if that's what it took ...

How do you handle the "You're going to Disney again?" people? DH thinks we should just stop telling people that we're going.

UPDATE: Since I made this post, we have booked a late November/early December trip! We haven't told a soul ... yet.

Like the "yes we are" as we are going for our 57th time in 28 more days. and OP is so right when the ones who ask go to the same place each year for their "own" reasons and we do not question that. Vacation is to rest the mind and --sorta-- the body so to each their own. My favorite is when they ask How in the world do you afford to go to WDW two or three times a year? and to that I do respond we do not drink attend every concert that is in town nor go out to eat 5 out of 7 nites a week IF they have not walked away by this point I throw in nor do we live at the River Boat Casinos.

I got a little "sneaky" about next year's trip.

History of plan: First we planned our usual WDW trip. DS11 tells G'ma and gets the "Why are you going there? There are other places to go. Such as go up to Ill. to visit (very distant) relatives". Ugh!! I'll add: this is the only place DH ever got to go to as a kid, and still the only place his parents goes to.

Then, the plans changed. DH finally agreed to gone on DCL. (His idea, I promise.). So, DS11 tells G'ma we are going on a Cruise. She is OK w/that.

Then, the plans change again.....WDW has Free Dining at end of May. So, we are going to WDW first, then the DCL.

The "sneaky" part.....I'm not telling DS11 or G'ma we are going to WDW. I'm not going to lie, I'm just not saying.

Rant: I get so tired of G'ma giving DS11 a hard time about our choice of vacation. She never says anything to me. I really wish she would confront me instead of DS11 with her not liking our vacation choices.

Have you ever asked her to join you on one of your trips? If she is able to make the trip (even with a scooter [even better for you all!]) I'd bet my next vacation to WDW that she would get caught up in the Magic and stop asking the silly question.

I'm going 3 times next year and I have yet to encounter that question but when it arises im going to say "its my money and I need WDW NOW!!" (refering to that money commercial where people are screaming "its my money and I need it now")

We went for DH and the kid's 1st trip to WDW in March 2009. Went the week of DS's 3rd birthday to take advantage of no park ticket needed for him. We also took advantage of the buy 4 get 3 free with a $300 gift card promotion which we used to buy food in the park.

Went again this past April and made the decision before booking to go ahead and get AP's since Easter is late April 2011 and it would save us some money over buying 9 day park hoppers tickets twice. I worked the numbers and bought tickets from Undercover tourist at a discounted rate and then we upgraded to the AP's which came out to about $120 savings. We used disney reward dollars to cover the the cost of the upgrade. Took our camper and stayed at Fort Wilderness.

I am now just starting to tell people (due to the fact it is a total surprise to the kids) that we are going back on the 22nd and getting both postive and negative responses.

For the negative ones, I am getting great enjoyment out of telling them how much out of pocket it is costing us for this trip

Arriving in at MCO Oct 22nd 9pm Leaving MCO Sunday Oct 31st at 605pm thus 9 days at Disney.
Flight for 4 people $714.08 minus DH flight credit = $376.38
Rental car for length of trip (not dealing with bus and stroller) = $274.53
Room POP Century $775.69 (AP discount)- $775.69 disney rewards = $0
MNSSHP tickets October 26 $200.02 (AP discount) -$200.02 disney rewards = $0
Park Tickets = $0 (already paid for)
Food estimate = $400 (we are snackers instead of eaters while on vacation and taking advantage of frig swap)
Souvenirs = $100 (each kid get to pick one thing and I pack glow sticks, light up whirlys, and made 9 days worth of matching shirts for our last trip, and make up an autograph book)
airport parking = $80
Costumes for MNSSHP = $20 (DD costume was bday present, DH and my outfits we had, purchased outfit for DS)
Dog sitter $200

So roughly $1500 or $167 per day. Less than what most of my friends spent on just the hotel room portion of thier beach vacation.

This thread made me happy because now I know I am not alone! We just got back from our 6th trip and we already have next year booked. I hear "you are going again" so many times it drives me nuts! Often from the same people. I usually tell people that it is a simple trip for our family of 6 that we all enjoy. And we will do other things when the kids get older (they are only young once!) Some of the annoying ones I started asking "do you go on vacation every year?" That usually shuts them up because they don't.

I love it when friends go for the first time and come home and tell us they get it!

We're only on our second family trip (our first was 11/2009) and we've gotten comments from people we told. My mother said - and I quote - "When I suggested Disney last year, I meant that every parent needs to pay their dues. I didn't mean to pay your dues every year. What about going to Puerto Rico?" Yeah, because Puerto Rico is a MUCH better idea with three LOs. DH and I plan to go to WDW every year or two from now on, so I'm guessing we'll be getting lots more comments. Eh, we'll pick Disney over the beach any day.

I truly believe that any criticism or insults are all based on JEALOUSY!!!!

Honestly, when most people say this to me, it's because they ask about how we can financially do it. By no means are we rich or even well off, so I just tell people that we are poor budgeters and we are spending all of our money now. Then i say that our kids will have no inheritance, will have to be in debt because they'll pay for their own college, and DH and I will be living in the gutter when we retire! But we'll have great family memories! That usually shuts them up.
