Both DD and I are PADI Advanced Open Water Certified and also dove the Living Seas. Cool dive. Living in Miami we are close to the Keys and and have great diving near us. Have you ever been down here?

Unfortunately Epcot is the only dive I've taken in American waters. I was certified in Malta because my in-laws live there and we are there for a few weeks at a time when we visit(needed something to get away from them a few hours a day;)). Diving is really cool there because of all the shipwrecks from the war, you can shore dive a lot of them.

I would love to do some diving down there but since DW and DS are always with me and she doesn't dive it's kind of tough to break away when we are on vacation. DS takes swim lessons at a dive center and their program gradually transitions into snorkeling then diving so eventually I'll have a dive buddy.

Ok...all the grand parent stories has made me jealous...so....In my spare time (what is that anymore?) I like to do Geneology Research. My 7th Great Grandmother (is that going back far enough?) her name was Jenny Wiley and she was kidnapped by the Indians in what is now West Virginia/Virginia and taken to Kentucky....Her children were murdered in front of her and the child she was carrying was killed right after birth. She was help captive by the Indians for about a year and then escaped and joined her husband and had a whole new family that I am descended from. She now has a State Park named for her in Kentucky.

My maternal Grandfather fought in the South Pacific during WWII and was on Guam and Phillipines mostly. He brought back a Japanese officer's sword that I still have and is as sharp today as it was back then.

My Paternal Grandfatherdid not really do much except have 9 children :rotfl2:

But, I’m starting with the Grandfather story (because I’m such an unsalvageable nerd, that y’all will quit reading and miss this if it were at the bottom).

My Gramps was an iron worker. He left WV in the mid 60s for FLA and worked on “The Cape” building gantries, towers and framing for NASA from the Gemini missions through the mid 80s. :cool2: He also took on a side job in 70-71 for a little company in Orlando where they had him working on the armature for this great big old tree house lookin’ thing that they put in some dinky amusement park. :rolleyes1 (He told me that all the builders and welders have their names inscribed and hidden out in the branches, but I can’t prove that one ;)).

Useless facts about me (and I do mean useless):
- Played Bari-Sax & Bass-Clari in HS marching, jazz & concert bands and pit orchestras. It gets worse… I was also the, quartermaster and music librarian for our band (good indictors of the wreck that was my social life as a teen).

- Still making noise but guitars are my drug of choice (Rock/Blues bands and contemporary Church bands). I currently have thirteen of these lovely ladies (DW refers to them as my mistresses). Each has a personality and a given name... Seriously… Christine, Sylvia, Ann, Sabrina, Ruth, Andrea, Ella, Raven, Stella, Yvette, Kim, Morgan & Lilly (yah I know… I’m a lost cause).

- I too would quit my job if I could figure out how to make enough either playing or traveling. (Can I join that business y’all were talking about?)

- I’m completely fascinated by all aspects of ships, aircraft, locomotives and autos (the older the better), and am currently on a quest to see every museum ship and/or transportation museum in the US.

- Intended to join the Navy, but foolishly went to school first, got sidetracked, and drifted into a land locked profession. To this day I’m more content onboard any type of sea vessel, then any where else. Were I younger, I’d like to remake that decision (except than I’d never have meet my wife – “Funny old world, ain’t it”).

- My hobbies are just plain goofy. I study history (for fun), prefer reading maps and atlases over novels, research the symbolism and history of flags (Vexillology) and the related arcane study of Heraldry (I draw up images of family coats-of-arms for nearly anyone that will allow it), and still spend time building models (ships, planes, trains…) just as I did in junior high.

Just shoot me now... :lmao:

I am enjoying all the info about specials talents and family histories but it is making me realize I really have a boring life! It's a great life just not very exciting but I'll go ahead and share anyway.

1. In the Navy for 6 years served on 2 Nuclear Submarines as a Sonar Technician.
2. Briefly visited Italy, France, Scotland and Norway while in the Navy.
3. Have had 4 Major Career changes in 18 years including the Navy Gig.
Here where it gets boring(and goofy)
4. Currently have 5 Desktop PC's, 4 Laptops and a iMac which are all "working"
5. Lived in Southeastern Michigan my whole life except for the 6 years in the Navy.
6. None of my family was involved in Bootlegging.:rotfl:
7. Have planned more virtual Disney trips then I can count!:woohoo:

Cool :thumbsup2 Which ships? Boomers or Hunters?

Same question for all the rest of you swabbies… Which ships did you serve in and do you got any interesting pictures?

(I said I was completely fascinated by ships)

Hear Hear! or is it Here Here!

Either way...Ta'-ta's are much more...titilating. so to speak.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Well played explodo, well played!!

Only thing interesting I can think of is:

1) Last year I went to the doctor cause my hand would not stop aching and felt a small lump. Turned out to be a rare tumor caused by the joint lining leaking out of the joint and forming into a tumor(non cancerous). It had ate the bone of my pinky, ring and middle fingers away. It effects about 2 people out of a million. It's usually in the knee or elbow joints, but mine was in the wrist. After 2 surgeries, a big bone graft, a month of radiation treatments and 6 months out of work everything is fine. And can u believe that with odds like that, I still haven't won a single powerball lottery.

Very cool story about your gramps! That's awesome that he played such a role in that little theme park's construction. Pretty sweet if you ask me.

Oh, and I just noticed your location. I have a customer in Fort Mill. Actually been working on a partial rewrite to their existing financing package this week.

Ok, so I'm officially jealous of # 2. All places I'd like to go. One definitely I want to visit and explore.

And I've lived in Southeastern Michigan too. My middle son was born in A2.

Cool :thumbsup2 Which ships? Boomers or Hunters?

Same question for all the rest of you swabbies… Which ships did you serve in and do you got any interesting pictures?

(I said I was completely fascinated by ships)

I was on the USS JACK SSN 605 and the USS City of Corpus Christri SSN 705 both of them were Fast Attack Hunters. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures because we weren't allowed to take pictures of the boat.

So, what was included in the kit? I don't have any land, but if it doesn't have a basement, i'm already intrigued. Did you have to pour a pad and have plumbing/electrical already run, or were instructions for that part of the kit? (heck, even a link would be cool. She has said she'd like to retire to a log cabin, and since she got me a new car, i figure i can start researching this now.)
The kit included the milled logs for the outside walls; logs for exposed beams in the kitchen, dining room and living room; the exterior doors and the windows. It was from a NH company called Solid Wall Homes. We built it in '84 and I don't think they're in business anymore, but I'm not certain. We did hire a contractor to pour the basement; add the subfloor; do the excavating/septic system; and the plumbing. We did everything else. All of the stuff that did not come with the kit was purchased locally. It's a small, 3 bedroom ranch house, since that was all we could afford back then. I mentioned the logs are milled: they look like clapboard on the outside and are flat on the inside; 4"x6" milled logs. The logs came pre-cut and numbered. It took us 6 months from start to finish, working on it evenings and weekends. It was actually a fun project; now it's not so fun anymore! :lmao:

7. My biggest claim to fame is that Reggie Jackson almost killed me. I was walking down a sidewalk in Cooperstown, NY during the Baseball Hall of Fame induction weekend. I was crossing an alley, when a big black sedan came flying down the street and whipped into the alley. I had to jump out the way. Reggie was late for an autograph session, and never even slowed down.
Larry Holmes once crashed into my DW in a local grocery store! Fortunately, they were both walking!

As for my grandfathers ~ My Pop Pop (dad's dad) was a train engineer here in the Lehigh Valley and NJ. I never knew my mom's dad; he died before I was born; he also worked on a railroad, as a laborer.

As for the Navy ~ I was in 4 years and was never stationed aboard a ship. I spent the first year in Boot Camp in Great Lakes and in "A" and "C" schools in San Diego, and the next 3 years at NavCommSta Guam where I was CW operator.

We definitely have a lot of interesting Dads in this club! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

And I've lived in Southeastern Michigan too. My middle son was born in A2.

Unfortunately my visits were really short 2 days in France 1.5 days in Norway and 1/2 a day in Scotland. Italy was the only one that I had some decent amount of time in. I would love to go back and really explore some of the historical sites and cities.

My kids were born at Huron Valley Hospital.

Even still, short or not - those visits are more than I've experienced yet. All of those locations are on my bucket list.

Our DGS took his first trip to NC to visit his other grandparents last week. He really enjoyed playing in the Atlantic. He didn't enjoy another part of the trip so much!

The enjoyable part!

Two very different ships. I suspected that pictures were verboten, but it was worth asking. I’ll have to hope for a good story or two some time in the future (at least one that’s not still classified :rolleyes1).

BTW: Thanks for your service.

:lmao: just look at my signature, that tells you what i did with my 44 years of life.:lmao: besides designing heating and a/c systems, go to every dance comp. and recitals for the last 15 years, thats about it.:lmao: now that dd is going to be a sr. in high school and out of hs by this time next year, dw and i are planning two trips per year to the world.:lmao: for you dads with younger kids, i just paid $500 for sr pictures.(they were very nice.):lmao:

Very cool. What line? Passenger or freight? What kind of Engines?
(I warned y’all, I’m interested in nearly every machine that moves)

And… Thanks for your service as well. I’d like to here a story of three form your days in Guam.

BTW: That's a hansom Grandson (and already possessing a good sense of what is and what isn’t entertaining).

Trains....My DW grandfather was a long time railroad man. We have all his keys, conductors hat, paper work, union books, Dishes, glasses, tons of neat collectibles from his days working on the railroad.

We live near a large train yard as well. Seems this part of the area was built just for the workers back when. Wonderful history here. Still a sight to see a train rolling down the track. Not many people get to see that much anymore. We get to see it almost everyday. :)

Family history.....:)

4) We had our wedding reception at a hotel in downtown Chicago where the honeymoon suite was once Al Capone's preferred hotel room in Chicago.
The building we had our wedding reception in has a huge fiberglass cow on the roof. I'll have to see if I can dig up some pictures.

4. I've been a scratch golfer most of my life.

5. Played College Football
I'm a scratch golfer myself. We have a lot of mosquitoes here in Wisconsin, and occasionally they will bite you while golfing. I then scratch the spot where I was bit.

What school and what position did you play?

I guess the stereotypical "Christmas morning" looked a little different in your house.
Every Christmas Eve, after the evening milking, my dad would always want to take us kids into town (population: ~900) to look at everyone's Christmas lights. And every year, while we were gone, Santa would come and deliver presents. I can't believe we just missed him for like 7 years in a row! Although, then on Christmas morning we could just get up and head to the barn for chores, rather than having to sit around and open presents.

4. And for the grandparent angle, how's this? During prohibition, my grandmother's uncle (not sure what that relation is to me) made booze in Chicago. The operation was discovered by the cops, raided, and he went to jail. Al Capone's people got him out. And that's just one of the stories. Over the years some of my cousins and I always suspected that Grandma and Grandpa had some mob ties in their younger days. Nobody really talks about it. Mom said that they'll tell the whole story someday, but not while Grandma is still alive.
So after Grandma passes (God rest her soul) you'll come back here and tell us, right?

2# working on my IT Networking degree, currently work for IBM so im in the right field.
What do you do for IBM? I went to school in La Crosse, and IBM has a facility just over an hour away in Rochester, MN. Seems like most of the other Computer Science graduates were taking programming jobs there. I was pretty good at programming, but I couldn't see myself doing it all day.

As cool as building the tree house is, I'm going to have to nerd out and say building stuff for NASA was cooler.

Ruth? What kind of name is Ruth for a guitar?

- I’m completely fascinated by all aspects of ships, aircraft, locomotives and autos (the older the better), and am currently on a quest to see every museum ship and/or transportation museum in the US.
You would get along very well with my 3 year old. :thumbsup2 I'm actually sort of in the same boat (pun intended). I get just as excited as he does when we hear a train rolling by.
There is a really cool Maritime Museum up in Manitowoc, Wi. They have a WWII submarine there, and they allow groups to sleep in it overnight. :crowded:

4. Currently have 5 Desktop PC's, 4 Laptops and a iMac which are all "working"
Nerd Alert! (But seriously - whatcha runnin' there?)

Just watch Phenias and Ferb...and realized some more interesting facts about me.

1] I know what Dr. Doofenschmertz is up too.
2] I know where Perry is.
3] I can make the Platapus noise. kgakgakgakgakgakga.
4] I created an inator-inator...but it disappeared.
