Well… Given the history of the area, it's bloody likely. :lmao:

I was actually born in Charleston, but we lived in Kanahawa City and then spent some time in Dunbar before heading out of the mountains. Pop’s family got there by following chemical and glass jobs out of the Akron area. Ma’s family hails from farther up the Elk River around Gassaway & Elkview. I’ve been down here in the low lands a long while, but I still have Cousins living in Clendenin and an uncle closer to you in Hurricane. I still love driving the back roads up there when the opportunity presents it’s self :goodvibes

.

Yep Hurricane (for those of you not from these parts...it is pronounced Hurry cun :rotfl2: not like the storm!) is only about 35 minutes from where we live in Ohio...across "The River" from Huntington.

Another Kentuckian. What county?
Breathitt. Relocated from Ohio, after Iowa, after NC, after The Philippines, after TN, but grew up in NY. Like the old Hank Snow song... I've Been Everywhere.

Absolutely true story. My wife's great-grandfather's moonshine still is in the Smithsonian Museum in DC (currently in storage). What makes this still more special than others? It is because he killed a Federal Agent searching for it. I also dated a girl before DW whose dad made his own moonshine, and aged it in the cellar in his house. On a New Year's Eve Dance, she, her 2 older brothers and their dates, her parents, and I all did shots of whatever vintage moonshine. Yeehaw!

Not as interesting a story but during Prohibition, my Gramdfather was an urban moonshiner. My father and his siblings needed to wait for their bath until the "gin" was done. Grandpa and his pisans would regularly meet to concoct their wares. One time he could not make it, the others were busted by the police. Their big thing was cherries and "brandy." Powerful stuff.

I was just thinking about some of the dads we haven't seen around here in a while... wonder what happened to Jeff (Poopachino)? Or our other Jeff (itJeff)?? Last I remember from itJeff he was heading down to WDW :confused3

Hey I am still here guys.just been so busy with baseball.plus now I just got my new Evo so it will be easier for me to get in here. Shooting pool right now so can't chat to much, but I will be around more.I don't know if that is good or bad for u guys.:thumbsup2

Wow, you guys have been talkative.

Freezin'Rafiki:You do have some fine china there. You should bring it to the party more often.

Captain O: Here are my random facts:

1) After college (or University as they say in Canada) I didn't know what I wanted to do so I drove for 15,000 miles. Started in Edmonton went to the East cost (NYC) back up into Canada and back again. Spent 3 months on the road and eventually settled in Chicago as my destination of choice. Have been here 13 years now.

2) I grew up in a town of 35,000 people but the next town closest (Edmonton) was 250 miles away.

3) I was in the jazz band in high school (tenor sax here) and also played in a garage band in college. Had the chance to open for The Headstones (alternative rock band in Canada).

4) We had our wedding reception at a hotel in downtown Chicago where the honeymoon suite was once Al Capone's preferred hotel room in Chicago.

Ok, I'll bite: Why is that?

This isn't in the realm of "hidden talents", but more along the lines of "random facts you may not know about me":
1. I've been to 49 states.
2. I played on my high school golf team and used to be pretty good. Even broke 80 a handful of times. Now that I have kids, I have no time or money for golf and struggle to keep it in double digits.
3. I also sang in the high school chorus. Is that nerdier than being a band geek?
4. I know I have a full-time job already, but when I grow up, I want to make movies and be a novelist. Or a travel journalist. Or all 3.

Ok..Here goes....

1. I am a member of the Masonic Lodge and served as Master of my home lodge in 2005

2. I have climbed to the top of Diamond Head in Hawaii, Statue of Liberty (no elevators...all steps), and the top of the dome and outside of the dome of St Patrick's Cathedreal in London.

3. Son was born in Poughkeepsie, NY. When we adopted him we took him from the hospital on Christmas Eve and we were stuck in NY until Martin Luther King Day. Daugher was born in Alton, IL. We were only in IL for 2 weeks since she came a few weeks ahead of the Christmas rush.

4. In addition to Marshall University sports...I enjoy NASCAR and cheering for Mark Martin. Although, NASCAR is not as much fun since Earnhardt died.

You don't know that I have been on more airplanes that most of you DisDads. Any challengers!

Now let's hear something about the rest of you guys! popcorn::

At night in my cornfield maze...I can be standing right beside you and you'd never know it...unless I just ate Mexican food...gotta go now...had Mexican food for dinner. :rolleyes1

Ok here are a few more tidbits about me, as if you haven't all already seen or read enough...

1. I've been to 44 states and 3 countries.
2. My 3 children were all born in different states, though both of my sons were born in St. Joseph's Hospital.
3. I've worked in two different theme parks in my life.
4. I really would love to be able to quit my job and do something fun in the travel industry for the rest of my working days. I've love to be one of those folks who visit and rate hotels, and restaurants, and places of interest (like Disney parks for example) and actually get paid to do it.
5. I love putting together puzzles. I have framed quite a few in my life, and currently have 4 large framed puzzles hanging in my home.
6. I am allergic to strawberries.
7. My grandfather was in the Norwegian Underground during WWII during the occupation. (Not that tidbit is about ME, but other guys were talking about their moonshining grandparents, so I wanted to mention something cool about one of my grandpas too...). But I am half Norwegian. My mother was born in a suburb of Oslo, and she and her family came to this country in 1953. And someday I would like to go to Norway and see it for myself. (It's also my favorite pavilion in World Showcase).

My turn at random facts:

1. I've already mentioned around here that I am a lawyer for the federal government. What you don't know is that this is, by my count, my fourth career. I started my professional life as a Jewish educator, teaching at every level from preschool through adults, and specializing in working with teenagers. After that, I went to rabbinical school. I completed three years of a five year program, and served as a student rabbi in congregations in Dayton, Ohio; Pueblo, Colorado; and Billings, Montana; and was the rabbinic intern for University of Cincinnati Hillel when I decided to leave school. After rabbinical school, I spent about a year running my own computer consulting company, doing database and web design work. I've now been an attorney for longer than I worked in all of those other careers combined.

2. My grandfather was a prohibition-era sax player, who played with Count Basie, turned down a chance to tour Europe with a big band during the Great Depression, because my grandmother was pregnant with my aunt, and we joke that he "won my aunt in a craps game." He took a walk around the block outside the hospital after she was born, fretting over how he was going to pay the hospital bill when they were discharged, stumbled over a floating craps game in the alley, and won enough money to pay the bill.

3. I lived in Jerusalem, Israel for a year. Due to a series of bizarre circumstances, in that one year I lived in four different apartments scattered all over the New City.

4. I am a HUGE fan of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel television series. I own both in their entirety, and have watched them (7 seasons of Buffy, 5 season of Angel) all the way through at least six times (and I never saw an episode of either series until they were already canceled).

Oh... and did you know there are still people out there who use... dare I say... dial-up internet??

Speaking of pianos... we bought an ancient upright from an old lady last year so my DD can practice at home. She is currently taking lessons from our church pianist. We had it tuned by a professional shortly after we got it... it is now in BAD need of a new tune. So... being the industrious cheapskate that I am, I went to eBay and bought the stuff I need to tune it myself. Received my brand new Korg chromatic tuner today... just waiting on the mutes and hammer. This is going to be FUN!:banana:
my random fact: I hang out with guys that do Rendezvous reinactments, and we shot black powder rifles at a Piano last winter.

Oh, isn't there the one about using grandpappy's still to make moonshine? Or is that Tennessee?

Fact 2: I have brewed my own beer, and looked into distilling my own whiskey. I learned that this is illegal, but not because "The Man" doesn't get his taxes. But because you have aresolized alcohol in a pressurized system with open flame. Do it wrong? BOOM. i get it now.

Another Kentuckian. What county? See below and you may see why.

I lived in Kentucky (Lexington) for 6 months, where I was employed as a car salesman, though, i wouldn't say i "sold cars" per se, and didn't have that job long.

I just copied the 2nd moonshine thing b/c i'd really like to distill my own booze.

1) I have always been a kid at heart. Only been to disney once and I'm ready to go back in around 200 days :)

2) I took piano lessons at age 8, played on the church worship team by the time i was 12. At age 21, I stopped playing piano because we moved to a place that didn't take pianos and i didn't have an electric. Started up again about 3.5 years ago...still re-learning.

3) I have been going to our current church for 5 years now...joined our worship team about 2 years ago. Have been working in the youth group for 2 years as well. The worship team is amazing. I love being part of it.

4) I grew up in a town of 9000 people...was in show choir and drama. Met my wife at church, got married at that particular church and here we are, 13 years later :) We married young....I was 21, she was 18. We have three kids. Two girls and a boy. Girls: 8 and 6; Boy: 5.

5) I tend to enjoy watching the tv shows the kids watch more than the "adult" shows on tv. I really enjoy spending time with the kids watching Hannah Montana. The character, Jackson, is hilarious...I always get a good laugh from him. I also enjoy watchin Wizards of Waverly with them too.

6) I'm a gleek. I love the tv show Glee....I like the arrangements of the music and I guess it takes me back to my show choir days.

7) I am now an assistant manager for a hotel. It's a lot of hours

(wow, I talk alot) :)

Now let's hear something about the rest of you guys! popcorn::

OK, here goes:
1) I'm a chemical technician working in microelectronics development.
2) I'm a Navy veteran; spent 3 years on Guam as a CW (Morse Code) operator during the early 70's.
3) Hobbies: Amateur (Ham) Radio (extra class license holder); Geocaching.
4) I'm a member of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.
5) My DW and I spent 8+ years as volunteers for a Search and Rescue agency, along with our two Border Collies. We helped out at little at GZ in NYC but mostly did "wilderness" type searches. We "retired" in 2004.
6) The only musical instrument I ever played was the kazoo although I did try to learn to play the guitar while I was in San Diego at Radioman A School in 1971. :lmao:
7) We built our own house, with a lot of help from friends. It's a log (kit), ranch home on 1.3 acres. We had never built anything before. It's still standing after 26 years!
That's about it.

So, what was included in the kit? I don't have any land, but if it doesn't have a basement, i'm already intrigued. Did you have to pour a pad and have plumbing/electrical already run, or were instructions for that part of the kit? (heck, even a link would be cool. She has said she'd like to retire to a log cabin, and since she got me a new car, i figure i can start researching this now.)

Did you get involved in any shoot-outs involving marble staircases and baby carriages? :rotfl2:

2. I have climbed to the top of Diamond Head in Hawaii, Statue of Liberty (no elevators...all steps), and the top of the dome and outside of the dome of St Patrick's Cathedreal in London.

That's very cool! I've done the Diamond Head hike as well--one of the best views I've ever seen! :thumbsup2

So you're a crop-duster? Somehow, I think I already knew this. ;)

You and me both, buddy. Maybe we should start our own company or something.

These stories are really cool! My grandfather used to work for Bell Atlantic and wound up working behind enemy lines in France in WWII setting up communication lines. I get the feeling our grandfathers could share some extremely interesting stories. :thumbsup2

You sound like a living Mythbusters episode! :lmao:

I think this is a requirement for this group.

I'd love to hear more about this as well. My DW and I have often dreamed of retiring to our own private Wilderness Lodge someday.

That sounds way cooler than my job.

This site must give you tons of data! :rotfl2:

You wouldn't believe how much data can come from sites like this. It's stunning. Not details of course...but how information is recieved and processed.

For example the great code watch of early 2010 was very interesting. The disney spooks really know how to introduce information to a system.

While you were working with DOD, did you ever work with Dave Hall out in China Beach? He's a friend of mine - I posted a couple of pictures of his "toys" elsewhere in this thread (largest potato gun on earth, using a smaller air gun to run a projectile through a watermelon in super slo-mo).

Nope. But I knew a couple of Guys At Ft. Sill Named Bob and Doug (We called them the Mckinsey Brothers) who made a Steam Mortar. Coolest thing ever.
