13.1 Before I Hit 40 - Running my 1st 1/2 Marathon at Disney uptd 09/30

I've only read through the first page of your report but you go girl!!! I wish you all the best! I might just be get my butt off the couch and train for the Princess Half Marathon in 2012, the year I turn 40!! (I too was one of the gym rejects and remember the 10 minute "run" that I walked every time.) GOOD LUCK!!

I'm so glad I'm not the only gym reject out there. I really had a talent for getting out of class. It was really nothing but a form of pure torture for me.

When I originally registered for the Wine and Dine 1/2 I had every intention of running the entire 13.1 miles. Really I did. That, however, was before I ended up walking a 10k with no training at all, because I was feeling too blue to move my rump out the door. What's done is done, but it's made me look a bit more realisticly at the Wine and Dine.

There is no way I'm going to be able to run all 13.1 miles. Accepting that fact I can either just run as much as far as possible, and then just walk the rest of the way, or I can plan accordingly, and start my training with a run/walk program. I'm going to go with the run/walk program right off the bat. I need to request Jeff Galloway's book from interlibrary request, but I took a look at his plan online. There are several run/walk intervals given, and I'll have to read the book to find out how your supposed to chose one. I'm leaning towards either the run minutes/walk 1 or a run 1 minute/walk 1 minute mix. I was chatting with a friend of mine online last night and she does a 5/1 interval mix and has did her first marathon using that this year. She says finishes a half in about 2.5 hrs using that mix. I'm going to have to see what feels best for me.

I ordered one of these online last night to help me time my intervals -

gymboss_pink.jpg

It's a Gymboss interval timer, and can be set for a variety of intervals. It clips on you like a pager and can both beep and vibrate when it's time for interval changes. It was fairly inexpensive - it came up to less than $25 with shipping. I ordered it right from them, and it already shipped this morning. The pink was actually a bit too frou frou for me, so I ordered the camo one. Later I saw that they had a lime green one for sale on Jeff Galloway's site. :headache:

I did get a bunch of training/exercise in this weekend which I feel pretty good about. I took Zumba classes Thursday, Saturday and Sunday and got in 3 miles walking yesterday. I have some thoughts about those 3 miles, but I'll save that for my next post.

I've been doing some thinking about volunteering for the 5k race while I'm down at Disney. I'll have my race later that day, but I'm thinking that it would be a great way to help cheer on the 5K runners.

I did a bit of other shopping for my trip this weekend too. I hit up the trial size aisle at Target, and picked up stuff like deoderant, toothpaste and Gold Bond powder. Then I headed over to JC Penney's to pick up a new water bottle for the trip. On prior trips to Disney, depending on what time of year, I've had a case of water shipped to my resort, or just bought water in the parks. This trip I wanted to try to do something a bit more green and economical so I picked up a Bobble water bottle.

Bobble20Water20.jpg

I picked up one in blue. It's a squeezable water bottle with a filter so you can fill it up anywhere and have good quality water. I picked up one in blue, and so far I love it. The water in my area is fairly well chlorinated, and using this bottle has eliminated it. I love it for the gym too. I can fill up my bottle right at the water fountain. For $10 I think it was a steal. :thumbsup2

I think realistic expectations are so important, and I'm glad that you're enthusiastic about your new method of training. There's no sense in trying to overdo it and frustrating yourself.

I can't get over that water bottle with the filter in it! That is awesome! Do they sell replacement filters or how does that work? That would be so handy to have around in general, and imagine refilling it in the parks. :thumbsup2

Thanks. I think the new plan is going to work out better for me right now. Ideally I'd like to keep training, and then if I can manage it do the Princess in February with more running. I just know I'd be happier with walking breaks, and I'll be better off in the end.

Isn't the water bottle great? They do sell replacement filters too. I think they are about $6.95 each. They had those at Pennys too. I'm loving it so far. I always keep two Brita water pitchers in my fridge at home, so having one to take with me is very convient. I think they recomend changing it every 2 months or so. One filter is supposed to be equivalent to approx. 300 bottles of water.

They sell them on the Bobble website, as well as give you a list of who is selling them. JC Penneys was the closest place to me. The one tiny complaint I have about the bottle is that it doesn't quite fit into the cup holder in my car. The base is a tad too fat. If I remove the liner from the cup holder it fits fine, but that's just a minor complaint.

I think that for my first 1/2, I'll be the same way. I don't anticipate being able to run the whole thing, but I'd like to try the walk / run combo.

Thanks for all the information! I think that's great, there are just so many places I go that it would be nice to have one of those, never mind on vacation.

Wings....have you looked into where the characters will be along the road course for the race? (if it's even available) My thinking was if you timed you walk portions to be during the character sections that would be nicer then haven't to run thru them and not get any pictures or such.

I'm hoping they have characters out for this race. I think I had read somewhere that the Tower of Terror race last year didn't have any though. If there are I will be stopping for a few.:thumbsup2

You are sounding like you are in a "much better place" now, Crissy!! I really hope so!! You're new training schedule/plan looks great, and I'm particularly interested in your new gadget. I'm not overly thrilled with the music on the C25K podcasts, and would love to listen to something else when running. Something like you got, may be just the ticket!

I so wish I could run the Wine and Dine with you!!

Thanks. I'm having my good and my bad days, but I'm trying to be more accepting of things as they are right now, and making steps to change what I can.

I know what you mean about the music on onte C25K podcasts. I need to hear music I can sing to. I had found some other podcasts on the web that were a bit more "me". It still wasn't perfect, alot of the songs were a bit too hardcore hip hop for me, but the later weeks had some 80's pop mixes and Brittney Spears mixes. That kind of stuff was perfect for me. I like that this gadget vibrates so that I can listen to whatever I want on my ipod.

I too wish our trips were a bit closer. :)

I've been battling the blues again lately, so I've chosen to focus on a part of my planning that makes me really happy…Halloween costumes for MNSSHP! :woohoo: I know I've done a post on this before but I'm still feeling really torn about what I want to dress as. I love getting dressed up for Halloween, and my problem is I have too many things I want to be. :)Luckily I still have plenty of time.

Sure it would be easier for me to just wear the Belle or Esmerelda costumes that I already own, but what's the fun in that? The poofy dress Cinderella is still always a possibility too. My concern with that one is trying to cart it down to Florida. The skirt is pretty poofy. I'd probably have to ship it separately down to the resort, and then mail it home. Also part of me keeps thinking that Cinderella is a bit, well - overdone. I'd like to do something, that while still Disney related is a bit more original.

Right now I'm focusing on three different ideas, each with different pros and cons, so I'm going to do a bit of a unofficial poll. Let me know which your favorite is! Great way for any lurkers to say hi! :hippie:

Choice #1
The Redhead from the Pirates of the Carribean ride -

potc10_opt.jpg

In many ways this is my favorite choice. It's from my favorite ride, and it would be different. I love seeing the pictures of the groups that go as the Haunted Mansion characters so this would be my little tribute to my favorite. The downside though is that I'm having a hard time finding a pattern that would work, and I'm not sure that my mother (who is sewing this for me) would really be able to adapt an existing pattern. The other downside is that it would be pretty warm to be wearing around all night the first week of October in Orlando.

Choice #2
Mary Poppins Jolly Holiday Outfit

Mary-Poppins-mv02_opt.jpg

I love Mary, and the sidewalk chalk adventure has always been my favorite part of the movie. I love that the dress is a bit shorter, and even though there are sleeves they are sheer so it wouldn't be quite as hot. Again the problem is finding the right outfit. I've been searching around for a white dress to just adapt, and if I was a size small there would be a ton of options. Not quite as many in my size. Again, I haven't been having much luck with patterns, but I've found a few possiblities.

Choice #3
Giselle in the curtain dress

z4748529O_opt.jpg

I'm really liking this idea a lot, and it came to me as I was watching Enchanted the other night. The dress would be really comfortable to wear all night long, and should be fairly cool as it's short sleeves and flowy. (No one would see my feet either so I could wear my Keds and have comfy feet too). I even found a dress pattern that would work. I just have to check with my mother to be sure it's nothing too difficult for her. My concern is that people won't get what I am supposed to be.

So let me know what you think - #1, #2 or #3, or if you hate all of them. ;)I'm trying to consider the pluses and minuses of each so I'd love to get other opinions.

I'm voting for #2 (big surprise right?)

When you take the red hair out of the scene of POTC she looks like a can-can girl and you lose the effect. I think it works better as part of a group costume.

Giselle would be the most comfty....but only die hard fans are going to get who you are suppose to be. You may just look like you are in a fancy nightie.

So I go with Mary. Now I'm a big fan of taking everday clothes and making them be a costume. What I mean is, you don't have to get a dress....you could get a white skirt and apply the red ribbons to it. You don't have to wear the lacing up boots, you could get white strappy sandles. Red ribbon for a "belt", white top and you will need a hat that ties with white tulle. But I also think you could make the dress easy enough if you just modify the top a little bit.

I love the Giselle idea, but I must admit that even though I really liked the film, I wouldn't recognize who you are if you were wearing that costume. :rolleyes1

Another one for #2. Most recognizable, HOWEVER, you probably wont' be the only Mary there.

I think the problem with #1 and #3 is that they would need to be part of a larger group to be recognizable. Although I love Giselle's dress, and would love wearing that, it would be nice and cool, that's for sure.

But I'm with Heidi on how to piece together the Mary costume, it should be pretty easy and I love the Jolly Holiday outfit. :thumbsup2

I'm going against the grain & voting for the redhead. If you could make the dress in a lighter material, it might not be too hot. All 3 choices are great ideas, though! I'm still undecided on a costume, too. :confused3

I do like the fact that a Mary costume would be easy to put together. I thought I had a white skirt already, but I went searching yesterday and it's disappeared. :confused3 I actually went poking around online last night and found a dress that would work and wasn't too expensive. The top half was pretty different, but it still looked like it would work. It looked like what Mary would have worn if she was in Orlando instead of London. :rotfl:

The fact that it's a shorter dress wins points too. I love longer dresses, but I keep thinking of my last October trip when it rained constantly. I think I'll be better off with something I don't have to hold up out of puddles if needed.

I love the Giselle idea, but I must admit that even though I really liked the film, I wouldn't recognize who you are if you were wearing that costume. :rolleyes1

That's exactly what I'm afraid of with the Giselle idea. If the movie had just come out it would have been one thing, but it's been a few years now.

Another one for #2. Most recognizable, HOWEVER, you probably wont' be the only Mary there.

I just hope there would be less Mary's than princesses. ;)

I've tried to get my friend to get more excited about dressing up, but she's just not feeling it. I'll probably end up bring along my Esmerelda costume for her in case she wants it. Last time she didn't want to bother, and then when we got to the party she was wishing she had dressed up. :headache:

I keep waffling on the ideas. The other day Giselle was my first choice, and last night it was Mary Poppins. I'm so horribly indecisive. I think I need more Halloween parties to go to. :rotfl:

I still really like that one too! Part of my decision making is really going to depend on my mother. She said she would sew it for me, but she let me know this weekend that she flat out refuses to sew in the summer when it's hot. In a perfect world that would give us the month of September to get it done, but the weather here in Connecticut can be crazy. There is always the possiblity that September is as crazy hot as August. If that happens I might not get a costume made.

Mary has been winning points, just for the fact that I can do it without having to sew the costume from scratch.
