How long did it take to receive ssdi award?

I was finally approved for ssdi. I've been searching the internet and it seems like it takes a while to finally get the benefits once the decision is made. My lawyer made it sound like I would get it next month. Does anyone have any experience? The sooner the better.

When I got my award it was less than two weeks from the time I was notified by the lawyer until the money showed up in my account. It went directly to the bank because I had pre-signed up for direct deposit. After I got my back pay award, I did not start getting a monthly payment until the second month after that but just two weeks ago I got an additional $250 deposited from Pres. O'Bama's one time stimulus deal for 2009 since my award was retroactive to 2009.

It can take 6-8 weeks from the time the decision was made for benefits to be sent out. You will first get your backpay check (if any) that will show up either BEFORE your award letter (which is different then the approval letter, the award letter lays out what your benefits are, what was withheld for the attorney etc) or shortly afterwards (depending on if you have direct deposit or not). The award letter will tell you when your monthly benefit starts (you will get paid on a Wed. depending on what part of the month your b-day is in) So if you have a late month b-day, you will get you payment at the end of the month.

SSA ALWAYS pays a month behind. So if your payment date is the last Wed of the month and its June, you will receive your MAY payment on the 30th of June this year.

Also, if you have children, remember to apply for their benefits as well!

i didn't use a lawyer and was approved in less than 5 weeks after i applied, but in my case, i actually got the retroactive lump sum check before i got my awards letter. i literally fell to my knees from shock when i opened the mailbox and there was one of those gov checks for several thousand dollars!!! i got my letter a few days later. the same thing happened with the award for my son... i didn't even know that i was supposed to apply for him and i got a letter from social security telling me that as a minor child, he was entitled to a benefit since i was disabled. i'm always amazed at the horror stories i hear about ss disability because i have had the easiest time with it.

I listed him as my child on my original application 2.5 years ago. I remember having to give them his ssn. Is that enough or will I need to do more to make sure he gets his benefit? I didn't know I could sign up for direct deposit in advance so unfortunately I'll have to wait for the checks and paperwork to get here before I can change that.

no there is a separate application that you will need to fill out for your minor child.
