Well I don't fish, so I certainly wouldn't join him.
Is there a rule against fishing at OKW? Is he releasing them?

MG

Well I have to agree with Maistre Gracey that I sure wouldn't join him. But after looking the MS and Disney website, I was surprised to see that there is fishing allowed at various marinas, including OKW. But it does sound like it's an organized excursion with a charge.

As to whether or not to report him, it's along that same category when you see someone going into the lake right next to the sign that says no swimming or wading for health reasons. I kind of feel like that isn't my responsibility. So I guess the answer is no, I won't be reporting the fisherman.

Honestly, I wouldn't think anything of it--and didn't! Last July we were at SSR and every evening a gentleman fished off the bridge/walkway connecting The Paddock and The Springs area. My kids loved talking to him every night. In fact one day we even ran into him at MK! He says that he comes to WDW for 2 weeks every year to fish. It wasn't like he was there all day. I certainly don't think he was hurting anything. I didn't pay attention if he was releasing--but I would guess so. Maybe he's the guy who is fishing behind building 62 at OKW. Go talk to him. He's a nice guy!:thumbsup2

I know there is pole fishing available at WDW, so I looked it up but it doesn't mention OKW as one of the places. I probably wouldn't think it was odd though since I know it's allowed in some places (well unless he was wearing his hip waders and fly casting)!

From allears:

Dockside Fishing

Riverside at Port Orleans
Fishing Hole at Ol' Man Island

Catch-and-release cane pole fishing is also availabe without advance reservations at the following locations:

--Port Orleans Riverside Ol' Man Island at the Fishin' Hole
--Fort Wilderness Resort & Campgrounds

Hours are 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. and vary seasonally. The fishing areas are stocked with catfish, bass, and blue gill, and a catch is almost certain.

Cost -- Cane Pole & Worms - $4/hour OR Family Fishing - $12.50/hour (up to 6 people)

I stayed in building 46 OKW and saw 3 men fishing one evening, I thought nothing of it. This was 3 weeks ago. They were quite just casting away and then went on there way.

My understanding is that you can fish (catch & release) from the banks. But, as near as I can tell, you can't fish on open water without being on one of the guided trips. Some of the "real fishermen" report fishing off the banks of Bay Lake frequently, but not being allowed to with rental pontoons.

I could be wrong, though.

Ignore it. I've often seen people fishing at OKW. Usually it's behind buildings 45 and 46 though.

If you are concerned, and you must be if you asked the question, then go ahead and call the hospitality house. Ask if it is allowed. Tell them you are just curious. Then depending on what you find out you can decide for yourself weather or not you want to turn him in. If it was me I would ask out of curiosity but if he is not bothering anyone I probably would let him be. My guess is though if he is there alot they probably already know about him.

I would ignore them...my son would join them:goodvibes.....but when we stayed at VWL in April he was fishing(catch & release) from the shore there...a cm can over and told us it wasn't allowed that they only fishing allowed was if you went on one of disney's fishing boats...not sure if the cm was correct or not since after he told us that we never tried to fish again or questioned what he said........based on some info in this thread I'd probably some additional questions next time we are at wdw

remember back if you stayed at FW or the old treehouses or villas you could fish and take it back with you and cook it.

since OKW, disney did away with that policy.

if someone is just fishing - don't see the harm. really don't think it is against the rules. if he is not interfering with anyone.

at FW they can fish all over the campground.

besides doesn't the OKW boat go by that area. if the cm's on the boat are going by him and ignore him - definitely don't think anything wrong.

My response would generally be to ignore them, however if it is against policy, I would be inclined to report it for fear a gator might attack. I value the life of others much more than I value not looking like a snitch!

I'd probably just ignore him.

Actually, 2 yrs ago in August, the Epcot/HS boat was just about to dock at the Dolphin/Swan resort when my son asked me if people were allowed to fish on the water...I asked him why? and he pointed to a man who was fishing off the side. But seconds later, I saw patrol go over and then the man picked up his things and left. So, I turned to my son and said..."I guess not."

I don't think anyone else on that boat even noticed. But if they did, no one cared.

It's interesting on how we as DVC'rs pick and choose which rules we choose to enforce, report, or ignore. (Maybe that should be the topic of the next pole)

My son for one, loves to fish, and upon asking where at OKW he could fish, I was told categorically "No , fishing was not allowed." Since it's not allowed, I followed the rules and took him fishing in the Wilderness Camping area and I also paid for a fishing excursion a few years later.

I was berated on an earlier thread for my choice not to report a dog in the room. Not knowing whether the dog was or was not a service dog, lead to my opinion of not reporting it since it I did not know if there was in deed wrong doing or not. I believe the consensus was that those of us who would choose not to report it were then classsified as contributing to the decline of American values and morality. In kindergarten they tell you it's bad to be a tattle tale! :confused3

Fishing is against the rules at OKW, no grey area here but I guess "only" if you dare ask MS. "No" seemed quite clear to me but it seems that some DVC'rs lean towards selective enforcement of "The Rules". I guess for some it's the don't ask, don't tell mentality. I didn't assume that it was ok to fish until told otherwise, I asked in 2000 and was told no.

I don't fish at OKW. I don't take pool towels back to my room. I don't take towels off of the towel cart. I don't squeeze in more than the alloted guests into my villa. I don't bring my dog to the villa on vacation with me. I do however, do my best as a parent to police my own family and personal DVC guests into following the rules and not just DVC's rules. Don't canonize me for saint hood yet, I'm just the kind of person who typically follows the rules, however I also I believe in "live and let live" so "NO" I wouldn't report it. It's not my job to police strangers, in this case it's up to OKW and it's Mgmt. I would however, have to explain to my 13 year old son that though he could never fish at OKW because we have followed the rules, some people freely break the rules and do just what they want. I guess this will be a debatable point until OKW puts up no fishing signs all over the place.

I wonder what would happen if a child/adult fell in and it resulted in injury or worse, possible death, would the family of that person then sue DVC because it had not been posted that fishing was clearly against the rules!

I love the water views and the lush landscape of OKW, fencing would ruin it!

I think it depends upon whom you ask. We've been told numerous times by OKW cast members that catch and release fishing is allowed from the banks, and that Hank's has fishing poles available for such use. So, based upon that information, I would ignore anyone I saw fishing. It is not a question of "picking and choosing" what to report, if you've been told that it is OK.
