Will my DS16, aka Mr. Picky, be able to find something he will eat at Jambo?

I have to elaborate on the pickiness of his eating habits 1 - Will not eat meat that is on a bone, no ribs, chicken has to be off the bone, no bones. 2 - will inspect every inch of every piece of meat for any signs of fat, when he eats a steak he looks like he's in biology class looking for fat. 3 - Will not eat pork, unless it's smoked, as in ham, bacon, Taylor Ham (that's "pork roll" for you non-New Jersians). 4 - No vegatables, except Corn, that includes onions.

There's more too, but I think this is a good basis. Will this be a waste of money should we (Me, DW, DD20) just go and leave him to fend for himself at the food court? Or should we take him. :confused3 We've never been to Jambo and DD really wants to try it out.

Do you mean Jiko, the signature restaurant at Jambo House at AKL? They will most likely let him adapt a kids' entree if that is what he prefers. There is a grilled chicken breast on the kids' menu. Here is a link to the kid's menu:

People also seem to like the filet at Jiko - it should be lean, although I haven't had it yet:

If you mean Boma (the buffet) at AKL, there is plenty even for picky eaters to eat.

This will probably get me flamed....but...at 16 he would just have to get over it or be hungry. Actually, at a much younger age my kids have to get over it or be hungry.

Talked to my daughter, she meant Boma, I think she was combining the two into one place.

If he doesn't like what we're eating at home, he'll make himself a burger (I make up a bunch of patties and freeze them) or eggs or a tuna sandwich. I gave up trying to get him to eat veggies quite a while ago, wasn't worth the effort. The boy isn't starving he's 5'11" and weighs almost 200, he's right guard on the varsity football team and an all-county wrestler.

It's actually quite amusing to watch him eat a steak. ;)

Oh, and BTW I'll forgive you for being a Philles fan. Last years world series was rough for us Mets fans, I tried not rooting for the Phillies, but the Yankee hatred just over whemled me and I had to root for the Phillies, It comes down to the old Mets fan mantra - "You root for two teams: The Mets, and whoever is playing the Yankees."

Boma is a little tricky, IMO. Half of my family loves it, the other half would rather just eat in the room. There is a good variety, but much of the food is spiced or served differently than some might be used to. Our meat and potatoes child hates it here, so your son may well have a problem. Having said that, I think the food and atmosphere are spectacular, so it would be a shame to miss it.

I don't know if this helps or not, but good luck!

You could ask the hostess if your son could look at the buffet first and if he doesn't think he will like it he can go eat the Mara (AKL food court, right next door) My sister and her kids are picky and went a few years ago because I wanted to and we wound up at Pecos Bills in MK 2 hours later because they were starving.

I am sure there has to be something on this buffet that he will eat. I cannot see the whole buffet being inedible.

LOL! Rooting for the Mets in Philly would be tantamount to suicide! Remember, at our stadium a man was killed for spilling someone's beer!

Seriously, Boma is a buffet. If I remember correctly there are your typical children's choices. Nuggets, pizza, mac and cheese. I will mention that it was one of our least favorite places to eat, and we have no picky eaters, and some who are down right adventurous. Everything had the same "odd" (can't really describe it) flavor.

We love Boma, but it sounds like your son might be disappointed. I'd suggest letting him get something at the Mara. It would be a shame to deny everyone else a good dining experience.
We're Mets fans also. When the Yankees played the Phillies we were wishing that there was a way that they could both lose.

I agree 100%. I read this to hubby and he said the same thing, get over it or go hungry.

I understand people with allergies, (son has one to milk) or kids with texture issues do to autism and things like that. But routine picky I don't put up with.

I will agree but the saying goes "I root for two teams: The Yankees and whoever plays the Mets" ;)

I cannot for the life of me folks coming on here with picky eaters asking US what to feed them. IMO you made them OR allowed them to be picky. SO if u have picky eaters plz quit asking us.

If you are not interested in a thread, please feel free to skip over it without posting. It is a reasonable question for someone to ask about a restaurant they have never been to before, whether or not they have a picky eater. It is one of the reasons why there is a restaurant board on the DIS - to get advice about restaurants.

OP, my DD7 is a picky eater (sensory/texture issues before I get blamed for making her that way.). She loved the chicken nuggets at Boma and ate about three plates of fruit. I do seem to remember most of the meat was on the bone - we went on rib night (which DH loved) and there was also chicken on the bone.

I have to elaborate on the pickiness of his eating habits 1 - Will not eat meat that is on a bone, no ribs, chicken has to be off the bone, no bones. I dont think this is picky I don't like eating meat off the bone with my hands 2 - will inspect every inch of every piece of meat for any signs of fat, when he eats a steak he looks like he's in biology class looking for fat. again not everyone likes the taste of grissle I know I don't and I also disect my steak for all grissle, thats the great thing about filet mignon 3 - Will not eat pork, unless it's smoked, as in ham, bacon, Taylor Ham (that's "pork roll" for you non-New Jersians). 4 - No vegatables, except Corn, that includes onions.

I am sure that he will find something to eat at Boma and am sure he will find something to eat at Jiko

You are right. I just HATE questions re picky eaters. I will skip over them and not even read them.:headache::headache::headache:

Really? You obviously didn't skip over this one.

OP - I am sure your DS will find something to fill him...But honestly I would have him fend for himself at the food court. In my opinion BOMA is more for an adventurous eater. There are tons of choices, but not many are 'plain'. We found many of the dishes to have lots of different flavors and seasonings. Some we liked, some we didn't. But we were willing to try them. The dessert options are wonderful. They do have a kids sections with traditional 'kid friendly' offerings...not sure you are willing to pay an adult price for him to eat kids food. But if you really want to enjoy a family meal together, I would bet he would find enough to fill him. :)

I agree with you totally and I can't believe how many people have this same problem. They could really start a whole new board for "Pickey Eaters".

Still, it is a legitimate question. I would agree with others who suggest you go and let him fend for himself. I can accept the fact that there are picky eaters out there but it shouldn't ruin it for others. I have seen plenty of people enjoying their fries and chicken strips at Boma. All buffets make accomodations for 5 year olds, so people with the taste buds of 5 year olds should have no problem.

Note, I can talk like this because your 200lb son doesn't know where I live.:rotfl2:

My son is 15 and has very bad allergies and is also extremely picky. He loved Boma. He said the chicken nuggets were the best he ever had. He liked a few things so much that he even tried a few bites of things he would never normally try.

I tried not rooting for the Phillies, but the Yankee hatred just over whemled me and I had to root for the Phillies, It comes down to the old Mets fan mantra - "You root for two teams: The Mets, and whoever is playing the Yankees."

HA HA ! It's the same way up here in MA, except it's the Sox, and whoever is playing the Yankees!
We get to play them on opening day this year.

The problem with picky eaters and Boma is that most of the foods that a picky eater will enjoy are on the children's pod. So you pay adult buffet prices for them to eat children's food.

We took my best friend and her husband, both picky eaters, to Boma and the only things they found that they enjoyed (they did try some things but didn't like it) were from the children's pod. A pretty expensive dinner for chicken nuggets.

OP, if you don't mind paying that price for your son, he should find enough on the children's pod to fill himself up while the rest of you try the more adventurous dishes offered. We really enjoy Boma.
