A Drinker and a Dessert Fiend Dine Around Disney - Completed 11/20!

Mmmmm, thanks for all the yummy reviews so far!

I am soooo jealous that you got to go to Bern's. I live closeby (Clearwater area) and I am a MAJOR carnivore and have not gone yet!

Looking forward to more dining reviews!!!!

Glad you enjoy my reviews! :goodvibes

OMG you have to get to Bern's soon! It's no more expensive than dining at a Signature at Disney, and the steak quality is a lot better. My 7oz steak with soup, salad, potato, onion rings, and veggies was $33! The filets at the Signatures are about $40 and only have 1 side item!

I'm enjoying your Disney Reviews. I am so going to "The Ditch" in May. Please tell me they have some wine so I can keep DD quiet while I enjoy "one ta-kill-ya, two ta-kill-ya, three ta-kill-ya..."

As for Bern's Steakhouse - would it be weird to plan a trip around a restaurant? That looks like one of the most amazing places I've ever seen! :worship::worship:DD and I have already viewed and bookmarked their web site!

Sorry, no wine at The Ditch. Lots of tequila and a few beers.

I don't think it would be weird to plan a trip around a meal! My friend Mark that went with us is talking about flying in to Tampa one weekend just so we can all go to Bern's again! :rotfl:

On our first full day at Disney, we had breakfast at our resort - All Star Sport's End Zone Food Court.

Mark and I both ordered croissant sandwiches. Normally they come with egg, cheese, and bacon, but I had them omit the bacon from mine.

DSCN0735.jpg

This was probably the poorest meal of the trip. I was expected more of an egg patty, not scrambled egg that falls out as you try to eat the sandwich. It was the regular scrambled eggs you get on the platters - so the quality isn't great, and the temperature is usually slightly warm at best. The cheese was a processed "cheese product' type of deal. The croissant was the only passable part of the equation. Frankly, I like McDonald's breakfast items better that that sandwich!

Mark had a 'Nescrappe' coffee, which he seems to find passable. I don't drink straight coffee so I've never had it. I had an OJ with my sandwich. It was just the standard Minute Made, from concentrate that's all over Disney. Blech.

It was more of a meal for fuel than an enjoyable dining event.

I'll rate it a 3 out of 10.

We went to AK on 12/13. My last trip I had tried Yak and Yeti for the first time and loved it. That trip happened after our ADR booking window opened for the December trip, so when I tried to add Yak and Yeti, they were all booked up!

So, not one to take no for an answer, I had to idea of trying to walk up at 11am when they opened. It worked! :) We were seated right away.

I had an incredibly hard time deciding what to order. I loved everything that I had eaten last time, but wanted to try new things at the same time.

Mark ordered a glass of Plum Wine. I was wondering why he did that since he doesn't like sweet wine, but I didn't say anything. I guess I should have, because he didn't realize Plum wine is sweet. So for once, Mark did not finish a glass of alcohol! :scared1:

I finally got Mark to agree to splitting an appetizer order of Pork Egg Rolls to start.
DSCN0794.jpg

Normally these come with a chili-plum dipping sauce, but I asked for the sweet Thai chili sauce served with the Wok Fried Green Beans instead.

The eggs rolls were good, but not quite as good as the last time due to their increased greasiness. They were still tasty and I ate all of my share of the dish.

For an entree, Mark ordered the Seared Miso Salmon - miso glazed Atlantic salmon, jasmine rice, baby bok choy and shiitake mushroom stir-fry.
DSCN0792.jpg

I tasted most of Mark's food over the trip, in the name of research of course. ;)
This was very good salmon. It was moist, flaky, and flavorful. The top had a slight crust and the glaze was yummy. Mark really liked it and devoured the fish, but left the rice and veggies untouched, as usual.

For my entree, I finally settled on the Lettuce Cups with minced chicken breast, chopped vegetables, and a maple tamarind sauce.
DSCN0795.jpg

The lettuce was good, fresh and crispy. It was a little hard to wrap since it was iceberg and didn't really have much flexibility, so this was kind of a messy dish to eat. The chicken was a tad overcooked, but tasted good. There were bean sprouts, carrots, and some cilantro to add to the cups. After assembling everything with some of the maple tamarind sauce, the whole concoction was quite tasty. I was feeling like something with some veggies and a crunch, so this fit the bill very well.

Although I was pretty full, Mark was actually feeling dessert for once, so who am I to say no to sweets? I am the dessert fiend of the review, after all!

We went with the Fried Wontons - Skewers of fresh pineapple and cream cheese wontons, vanilla ice cream, and a honey vanilla drizzle.
DSCN0796.jpg

These were good, but not what I was expecting. From the description, I was thinking there would be cream cheese and pineapple INSIDE the wontons. The pineapple was in chunks on the skewers, and the inside of the wonton was just plain cream cheese. It didn't really hit the spot for me, so I ate a few bites and left the rest for Mark.

They do NOT take TIW at Yak and Yeti, I suppose because it's not owned by Disney. But they will give you a 10% Passholder discount, so it was nice to see that on the bill at least.

Although this visit to Yak and Yeti wasn't quite as impressive as my first time, it's still somewhere I now get cravings for and want to return to! I rated it an 8 last time, and it's fallen to a 7 now, but I will definitely be returning. I'll just be skipping dessert and having more Wok Fried Green Beans!

Coming up next: a DIS Meet, a Culinary Tour, and Boma!!!!

Ooohhh, that food at Yak & Yeti looks sooo good, it almost makes me want to go to AK. (Never been, not interested except for the food. Hubby is a major animal lover so for our December trip I've been telling him that all of the animal are animatronic! :darth:)

Wow, the prices at Bern's are good! We still don't have Valentine's plans yet, so maybe this weekend (if we can still get a reservation!). Or, at least soon.

Ok are you my twin? I cannot drink the Nescrape stuff either but DH doesnt mind it at all and I do not care for the OJ either...give me fresh squeezed or get it outta here!

The breakfast egg thing ticks me off because they make the world's best croissant sandwich at Main Street Bakery, why can't they duplicate it, or at least the egg portion of it, at the other CS places. A nice little folded egg omelette like patty with cheese inside, soooo good!

I had the tomato egg and cheese croissant from the BW Bakery last June and it was good except my egg was falling out in little bits all over the table and the stupid birds were zooming in to scoop it up!

DD and I are big fans of Y&Y. We eat there at least once a trip. It is a nice addition to AK. We have not had dessert yet, usually too full. If you go in a cooler month, try the hot tea, I love the tea pot. And I agree, the 10% AP discount is nice. (As are the Mypoints Gift Cards ;))

I think we are dining twins! We seem to have the same tastes in Disney food. That sandwich at Main Street Bakery sounds good, but I like to eat before I go in to the park! I bet they could easily duplicate it, but they don't want to....more reason for people to pay admission to get inside the parks!!!

I'm not even looking for fresh-squeezed OJ at a CS, but at least something not from concentrate...would that be so hard? I guess it's my trade off for the Coke. I HATE Pepsi, and if Disney had Pepsi products...oh boy, there would be trouble! So I guess I'd rather have Coke and Minute Maid OJ than Pepsi and Tropicana OJ.

What are mypoints gift cards?

Desserts & Alcohol?? I'm in!! Can't wait to read more!;)

Welcome!

You should def try AK!!! It's one of, if not my favorite park. Hey, even if it's not your thing, you at least have to go for the food at Yak and Yeti! ;)

I wouldn't count on getting a Bern's reservation for this weekend, but maybe the next one? They will take reservations up to 6 weeks in advance. You could go for a belated Valentine's Day.

We're thinking of stopping in at Y&Y and trying some appetizers and drinks in their bar ... I've been wanting to try the Yak Attack ever since I first heard about. More for the name than anything else which is perhaps the dumbest reason to try a new drink but that's just how I roll in WDW! :rotfl2:

MyPoints is a rewards program. I do several rewards programs, mostly Sunshine Rewards, for extra money for Disney. One of the options for MyPoints is Landry Restaurants Gift Cards, which they take at Y&Y, Rainforest Cafe and T-Rex. Lots on info on Rewards Programs if you go almost to the last Sub-Forum on the main page. (Disney Reward Programs or something like that?) Now, back to your regularly scheduled Food.....

LOVING your dining review!!! Great detail, I feel like I'm eating right there with you! Except why am I still hungry? Can't wait for more!

Enjoyed The Ditch twice last week!!! The jalapeno margarita and crab tostadas are my new favorite things!:thumbsup2

Thanks Shannon. I know, I get so hungry when I read or write DRs!

Ohh twice in one week, what a lush! :rotfl: It's pretty addictive, huh?

After a day at AK, what more appropriate place for dinner than a restaurant at AKL?

We had a 5:00 ADR at Boma, but we decided to go around 4 to take the culinary tours or Boma and Jiko I found out about through Shenanigoat's DR. (Thanks for sharing!)

You just show up at the Boma podium at 4 and tell them you'd like to do the culinary tour. That's it - no reservations or payments required!

We were led in the tour by a guy from....oh darn, his country of origin and name escapes me...but he was at Disney on one of those 1 year cultural immersion kind of programs. He was very friendly and did a great job.

They tell you about the design inspirations behind the decor and how different sections represent different African countries.

DSCN0810.jpg

Notice how the columns look like clay pots? Pretty nifty, huh?

Our guide was really informative and the information was interesting. But sorry, I didn't take notes and I don't recall much of it. Maybe I was just excited about the sampling I'd heard about!

Soup Sampling time!!
DSCN0813.jpg

Our guide showed us the different 'pods' for the food at Boma. He told us about some of their signature items and how they're made. Then we got to try the soups! He let us go back several times and have a few spoonfuls of each kind. :woohoo:

Mmmm cookies...
DSCN0816.jpg

After we told our guide we'd see him in an hour, we were dropped off to our Jiko guide, who again, I can't remember a name. I do however, recall that he was from Swaziland!

Here is he, explaining that rings around the columns in Jiko resprent the African tribes like the Ndebele, where the women wear rings around their necks according to their status - the more rings, the higher up she is in the tribe.
DSCN0818.jpg

We got the same type of spiel at Jiko about the restaurant decor. I remember more details from here, maybe because I thought our guide was cute! :rotfl:

DSCN0817.jpg

The things hanging from the ceiling are obviously birds. The back lighting on the walls changes color throughout the evening to mimic a sunset. A lot of the tables in Jiko are made of imported African Zebra wood. Our guide even showed us a hidden Mickey in the rocks outside the window at Jiko.

The wine list is exclusively South African. While we were having our culinary tour, most of the Jiko CM's were doing a wine tasting - so you can really trust your server's wine advice here!

Next we got to do some food tasting! We sat at the counter up by the huge wood burning ovens -
DSCN0821.jpg

They had prepared for us the trio of dips and African breads appetizer. There were only 3 of us on the tour, and they had made 3 fullk servings, so we had lots to munch on!

Mmmm noms.
DSCN0824.jpg

There were 3 different kinds of bread - Lentil Papadum, Flax Seed Naan, and Whole Wheat Lavosh. I wasn't wild over the Lavosh, but the Naan and Papadum are quite amazing.

Then there were the dips -
DSCN0823.jpg

The left bowl is a Kalamata Olive Hummus. In the middle is Durban Tikka Masala. On the right is a spicy Malay Lentil and Spinach Dip.
I really liked all the dips, but the Tikka Masala and Lentil and Spinach are both quite spicy. I think the Lentil and Spinach also has some cilantro in it. I enjoyed dipping the Naan the most. The papadum has spices in it, so I enjoyed it best plain.

While we ate our bread and dips, this Jiko chef was pulling Naan out of the wood burning ovens.
DSCN0825.jpg

He was talking up the restaurant and telling us how badly we needed to try it. He claims Jiko is the best signature. You could tell he really liked his job. :goodvibes I assured him I would be making an ADR for Jiko on my next trip, and that he better have some Naan for me. Well buddy, I'll be there in about 2 weeks! :yay:

I also had a long conversation with our guide from Swaziland. He was impressed I had heard of and knew where the country was located. We talked about the cultural differences and how he was adjusting to life in the US. I told him I could relate, having lived in France for a while! We both agreed that everyone should spend some time in a few foreign countries. We think it would make the world a more peaceful place. :goodvibes

Around 4:30 we finally got ourselves to stop eating the bread and left so the poor guys could get back to work.

I highly recommend doing this tour if you're around AKL at 4pm! Great thing if you need a snack. :rotfl:

Coming up next: A DIS Meet Dinner at Boma!

Can't wait to hear what you think of Boma, we have our first ADR there in March :cool1:

That culinary tour sounds awesome! I will have to try that next Saturday when I go for my solo day-trip! The price can't be beat ;).

And those wine trees- I WANT ONE! (Does Santa come in March? Because I don't think that I could wait until December!!! :drinking1
