New Years Eve week booking!!!

If you wanted 4 nights including NYE, do you think it's a must to book the whole week and then just subtract the days that you don't want at a later date?

These are all going to be borrowed points and I'm not sure we could use them during that UY because I think we've planned every possible stay already. We have a March UY and generally the December visits are the last to be booked.

This will be the first time I'm booking NYE with the "week at a time" policy and I just don't know what to do. A 2 bedroom at BWV standard is 80 points for a weekend night (I think I'm remembering correctly)...that's a whole lot of points to lose.

IMO, you will need to walk if you want standard view and it includes NYE.

After the December reservation is booked, couldn't you call and ask to "reallocate" the borrowed points to an earlier vacation? Then the "free" points would be current year and you could bank them. Not a perfect solution, but better than losing points or having to rent them.

Thank you, I need to check my '10 reservations. I do have a March BWV stay that uses 72 points and that would decrease the loss significantly.

Do you think that ANY BCV or BWV reservation that includes NYE would need to be walked?

Keep in mind that I am not the one who will lose out if this is bad advice, LOL.

I think you have to walk any standard view or boardwalk view reservation if the reservation includes NYE. Maybe the 2Bw2Q at BCV, too.

Not sure about the rest of the BCV or Pool/Garden at the BWV. Given your need to borrow & reallocate, I'd probably chance it and if the first call wasn't successful, I'd waitlist. I think there is a decent chance of that working since there would be 11 months for people to change their minds.

I am also writing (snail mail) to the Member Satisfaction team member to whom I spoke when the whole issue of walking a reservation came up. I want to be sure that I understood what I had been told. If on the day I call, not walking ( I haven't made up my mind, I would love to know what people did this year, but no responses from experiences yet), I have 5 on site home resorts that I can book. I just won't have the 2 bedroom BWV for our DS and his family. They may have to wait until the points won't be borrowed for their first NYE stay, or I book 2 studios somewhere and they have to split up. 4 in one studio and 1 DGC with us.

Was really only trying to be funny and let you know that sometimes I make different decisions for myself than the "more objective" advice I post for others. I know you won't be mad if my advice doesn't work out. Would love to know how it does, though.

I wish walking wasn't allowed, but I see no way for them to stop it without creating other problems for members that may be even more onerous. Maybe next month we can do a poll to see how many people got what they wanted without walking.

Anyway, if you don't get the BWV 2 bedroom on the first call, I really think a waitlist will come through. Since you have the other resorts as backup plan (which is perfectly workable), you'd have nothing to lose by waitlisting for the BWV option.

I'd love to be there some NYE, but don't see it happening anytime soon - at least I can live vicariously through those of you who can visit at that time.

I know I'll be skipping NYE next year, so you'll have 1 less person to compete with.

What is 'walking?'

When you "walk" a reservation, you begin the reservation process 11 months from a check-in date, and extend the reservation for a week. However, let's say you have begun the reservation for the third week in December, but what you really want is New Years Eve. What you then do is gradually eliminate days from the start of the reservation and extend the last days until you have the reservation ending after New Years Eve, whenever you want it. By having an existing reservation and merely extending it, you are able to book the night of NYE fully a week before anyone who only wanted NYE night, and ahead of anyone who wanted say 4 nights before and then including NYE. Here's some magic for both of us! I wish I hadn't thought of it, to worry about, but the possibility of "walking" came to me as soon as the new booking rules were announced. However, I was more concerned about never being able to get a Beach Cottage at VB. As it turns out, I was able to book one for our upcoming June stay. No walking, just called the first day I could.

Truly, I think you'll be fine. As someone mentioned, there are weekend nights involved and some DVCers avoid them on principle!

In our case, our DS and family may not be living in Florida by December as they had hoped. My concern about a standard view 2 bedroom may be totally premature. I do want to go to WDW for NYE. We were there last year, and enjoyed it so much, I want to start a family tradition, but maybe not beginning this year.

Now, realize that I'm not the one to be affected by this but....JK....couldn't resist but since I haven't actually done this I too felt the need for a disclaimer.

In reading your posting about walking requiring booking a week I'm thinking that is not necessary. The theory (that I believe is correct) is that if you get the first day of your reservation and never let the 11 month window "catch-up" to you then your room should be available for you to reserve it. ie - you should be able to book 4 days and walk that as long as you get that first day. Then you could walk from there or wait for 2-3 days before walking the reservation. The key is starting the reservation - not the length of the reservation. That might help you out with some of the borrowing since you're only looking for 4 days in the end.

At least - this is how I understand it to work and how I myself would try it.
