The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Good afternoon ladies!!

Just got in with Buddy and heard from Marisa. She is out of surgery adn is fine. She said that she was in a lot of pain and that three doses of medicine did not help. The anesthesiologist came in and did something to the nerve and said she would not feel pain there for 36 hours. She hopes to leave within an hour.

Maria- I never heard the phone ring. Then the battery went dead. I plugged it in and there was 19 messages :confused3 I have missed a lot of calls I guess.

Glad to see you are feeling better, and Kathy too.
I'll read back now and see what I missed today.

Care to share your stuffing recipe?:flower3:

I do it by eye but will right it down tomorrow night when I make it & post it....

Here is my easy orange cranberries:

  • 4 cups sugar
  • 4 cups o.j
  • 1 apple peeled & grated
  • 8 cups (2 12-oz package) fresh whole cranberries
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • peel from 1 orange
I have made this with a pint of blueberries & cut the o.j down to 3 cups.

~Rinse & pick through berries.
~In a heavy pot heat juice & sugar until the sugar is dissolved over medium heat
~Add your fruit cover & wait for the popping to begin, bring to a low boil & turn down heat to a simmer for 10 minutes.

Cool before putting in the fridge. Thickens as it cools.

Makes 4 1/2 cups, easily cut into 1/2.

Nan, so glad Marisa is ok..........I'm so glad this day is over for your family. How is Buddy?

Emma is well... 4 shots...16lb ...24 inches and thriving. Covered her with a blanket like Laura suggested. There were three visibly sick teens in the waiting room. Got 5 cans of sample formula...I am a happy Mom!

BBL, thanks all for asking about my girl.

So glad to hear Marisa is OK, thanks Nan.

Ann - Great to hear Emma had a good check-up! Prayers for Ron.

Good grief what is going on. It has taken me 20 minutes to get in here. Very slow this afternoon.

Nancy~PTL!! I am so glad Marisa got along ok and that is over. How did Buddy do? Now go pour a glass of wine and take it easy. You so deserve it.

Lauren~ Oh sweetie please take care of you. How in the world did you fall off of the chair? Did you hurt your arm really bad? I always loved the smell of my "Baby Doll" after I got her back from the groomer. Enjoy Riley.

Ann~ so glad to know you are home and the shots are over with. I hated that!! Prayers for Ron are on the way.

Have a great evening all!!

Wfd- ny strips with baby bellas and bearnaise, cauliflower gratin. and an almond snickers for dessert ;)

Now to read while the baby is sleeping in my arms.

Since I'm not cooking for Thanksgiving I'd love to enjoy the planning of a nice big dinner with the rest of you. Please share your Thanksgiving menus with me!!!!!!:flower3:

Well, Dad ordered 2 turkeys, so I don't have to cook a bird. One would have been enough, but he likes to eat turkey for days afterward. I'll bag all the leftovers for him to take home with him.

I am making:

Apple and onion dressing
Mashed potatoes and gravy
Sweet potato casserole
Corn pudding
possibly green bean casserole
green salad with pears and pomegranate
homemade rolls with butter and jam
cranberry sauce
pumpkin pie (and anything left over from our pie night)

Does that sound like a good feast? Have I forgotten anything important?

I'm glad that all is well with Emma!

Prayers for Ron. Please keep us posted!

We had a busy weekend. We had a funeral on Saturday for a family friend. She had MS and had been sick for some time, so this was expected. It was a nice service and the people who spoke reminded me of a lot of little things about her that I had forgotten.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Expected or not, it always hurts

My gram's service was very nice, but it just still hasn't set in. The kiddo was great, it was her first funeral and wake but she did so good. It's still just a shock, she caught us all by suprise.

Have a great day all.

That poor little NC girl's body was found. Prayers for that little innocent angel! This story just made me sick.

I've been following that story... she was just beautiful. I can't elp but think that the girl at least was out of pain. Some children are sold into a life of prostitution at a young age and are abused over and over again their whole life. This poor baby didn't have to suffer long.

And thank goodness we know who is responsible so they can be held accountable

Oh I also have to tell y'all about setting my hair on fire!! Yeah:scared1: Yesterday, I picked the rest of my jalapeno & habanero peppers, decided to smoke them on the grill. Well I couldn't get the grill lit, so what stupid thing do I do? Yes stick my head right over the grill to look in, WHUUMMPPFFF..... Aaaaagggghhh! The front of my hair went up, Chris & Alexis were there, Chris runs out & starts hitting at my hair, she had on a black shirt & I see little bits of my hair all over her shirt, then I really freaked out!!! :scared:

It's actually fine & if I didn't point it out no one would know! I washed it & put a ton of conditioner. It's funny now that I know it's okay! :rotfl2:

 :rotfl:

I have thawed out a big container of Veggie Chili and will make some bulgar wheat to serve it over. Buddy will probably run through Subway :lmao:

Poor Buddy! :lmao:

Thanks for all the good wishes, feeling a bit better today but not well enough to go back to work yet, hopefully tomorrow. Still not much of a voice though.

I'm so sorry you're sick, Kathy. What do you think it is? Cold?

Since I'm not cooking for Thanksgiving I'd love to enjoy the planning of a nice big dinner with the rest of you. Please share your Thanksgiving menus with me!!!!!!:flower3:

We just booked our reservation for a local hotel buffet. Crab legs, shrimp, omelet station, etc.

not doing so good. fell off a rolling chair earlier right on my arm that has been bothering me and in pain. then my washer is locked with wet clothes and cant get it open.

Oh no!! Do you think you broke it?

I'm glad it went well but I sure hope that pain doesn't return in 36 hours!

You got them :goodvibes

I am finally home. I need a vacation from my trips. This trip was... not great. I rested very little and did lots of PR stuff. It's hard to explain without giving too much detail on a public board. We were in the news, and will continue to be, but in a limited circle of media which is good. Our issues are not resolved - and they have nothing to do with our church. It's other people who have issue with us. It's politics and money - nothing more. I am mentally exhausted from making the rounds and discussing the situation with anyone I could. We got lots of support, it's just tiring. And frustrating. I got so ticked this morning I came thisclose to stomping out of the meeting ;) We also had a run in with security over a troubled person there to cause a disturbance... :rolleyes1

I didn't eat anything good, really, mostly meetings with food there. You know, catered meals. I actually got home in time for dinner so we are heading to IHOP for pancakes thanks to the seasonal pancake talk y'all had! :rotfl:

My granddaddy went back in the hospital Sun but last I heard, was going home today. He had a mild heart attack but is doing okay.

In other news, my DH was offered a position we had to turn down for various reasons and my dad was offered a position he could take!

Sounds awesome! I forgot about your pie night...what's planned for that?:yay:

Aimee - Sorry Grandaddy was back in the hospital but happy to hear he is OK.

We're doing a local hotel buffet too!

I'm feeling much better, it's been a combination cold/stomach bug. Going back to work tomorrow.:goodvibes

Aimee Sorry this wasn't the right job for your Husband. The right one will come along soon. Yeah for your Dad though:cheer2: So sorry to hear about your Granddad I wish him a speedy recovery. Try and let go of the problems at church. You don't want your body to get sick.

NancyGlad to hear Marisa is doing well. I hope she stays low on the pain scale.

Lauri Robin Sorry to hear about your losses. It is never easy to loose someone special.

Maria I am excited I get to show you around our great city. I promise to not scare you. I will keep my ax hiden. ;) Bring warm clothes you will be not far from the lake and it gets gusty.

Lauren I hope you are taking it easy. I hope your arm is feeling a little better gentle

Aimee, sorry to hear about grandpa's hospital episode. Glad he is better. Sorry DH's job offer was not a good fit for you all. Great news about your Dad!

Glynis, sounds good to me!

I wish we were doing a restaurant. I probably wont see any of my family that day :sad1:. It is just going to be us, DSD and her hubby, DGS, and maybe DSS if he isnt working. Fussy non vegatable eaters are not fun to cook for. But it is DH's birthday that day and he doesnt want a cake. I told him he had to for DS. I just hate being in the kitchen all day by myself cooking and cleaning. DSD's hubby is no fun to socialize with at all. I am glad DH will be surrounded by his kids for his bday.:goodvibes

Augh, that sounds miserable. I  the hotel buffet Thanksgiving dinner.

What about one of the meals that many of the grocery stores do, with all the food already done? You could always use one of those as a base for your meal and just round it out with some of your family's favorite foods. The clean up is much easier that way, too!

Granddaddy is still there. They fed him non-diabetic foods so now his bloodsugar is too high to go home. Now that I'm back in town, I will go in the morning and "visit" with his nurse about this. It's either that or I start bringing him meals. Ridiculous.

I'm here to confirm that the gingerbread pancakes are FABULOUS. Like eating a pumpkin bread or cake. So yummy... I'll be back for more!

Just popping in to say hi. I read through everything but forgot to quote.

Aimee- Sorry the job was not right for DH and your granddaddy is sick. I agree with Hersey - try not to let the work stuff get to you. I know that's harder in your line of work because it's not as cut and dry as a typical job.

Nancy - Glad to hear Marissa is doing well. Thanks for the update.

DisneyRon - Good luck to your DH tomorrow.

Lauren - I hope you feel better soon too.

Maria - I missed what is going on, but I think you needed a hug.

I am so tired. I get to have the special parking by the front door the rest of the week. :thumbsup2

Sounds awesome! I forgot about your pie night...what's planned for that?:yay:

Well, I absolutely have to make pecan. It's the most requested pie! So that for sure. I'm also planning on a black bottom banana cream pie, derby pie, caramel apple pie, white chocolate peppermint pie, and possibly french coconut pie.

Still up in the air. I have until next week to decide, though. I'm open to suggestions!

I hear you on this! This is why DH knows that if I cook the big meal, he gets to clean up after the big meal. He's pretty good at it, too. Of course, things could be hairy this year, as my dishwasher is on it's last legs. Which brings me to the best news! Dad called last night and told us he wants to buy us a dishwasher for Christmas!!! I'm so excited!!! I've never had one that was new before! So, I'm shopping around for brands, etc. Any advice would be appreciated!

Bethany, thank you so much. After the phone call we just had about an adoption I truly need a hug.

Aimee, so sorry about you Grand Dad, he is in my prayers.

Janice, we are going to have lots of fun!!!!!!!! So glad I have you there & thank you so much with your tips:goodvibes

Nancy, I'm sorry Marisa had some pain, I hope the rest of the day was better for her. Please tell her I'm praying for her! Wondering how Buddy's visit went?

Aimee, You poor girl! That's a lot to deal with all at once. I'm praying for you, your Grand-dad & the right job for your DH:flower3:!

Lauren, A rolling chair! Now you remind me of me! I really hope your arm feels better tomorrow, you have so much to handle on your own. Prayers that you feel better!

I didn't make much headway on my do-ahead cooking today. Cooked bacon & then sauteed onions & garlic in the bacon grease for spinach-artichoke. That's it! Then A came in & ate all of the bacon that was supposed to top the casserole! :lovestruc I couldn't help letting her eat it, I mean when you come home from school hungry & the house smells like bacon. :confused3:laughing::laughing:
