We are spending the weekend in Indiana with Grandma Chari and Grandpa Curt. Because we have 4 days to enjoy some Halloween fun, we ambitiously decided to try and have 3 Disney Family Nights while we're here! Our first evening was themed around one of my alltime favorite Disney movies, Bedknobs and Broomsticks! And oldie, but a classic.
As this movie is about Ms. Price and her desire to become a witch, our craft project for the evening was making these cute little witches. Kennedy shows us a part of her witch craft project.
AJ works on her witch project.
Bella tried really, really hard to participate in our project this evening, but she is sick . . . . . . really, really sick! She woke this morning with a fever of 101. She also had a sore throat, congestion, and cough. It got worse as the day went on. She was 104 this evening and feeling every bit of it. I am worried that she may have H1N1. We are medicating her with motrin and cough supressant. If she doesn't turn the corner by tomorrow morning and start feeling better, we will be taking her into the hospital. She really wanted to enjoy movie night with the rest of us.
As you can see, Bella's efforts were fruitless. As hard as she tried, her sickness had a grip on her and she just couldn't stay awake. She fell asleep at the table while making her witch.
AJ and Kennedy hold up their witch craft projects. AJ is holding Bella's too because she was still asleep.
After the witches were done, Grandma let us tape them up in her window.
Bella, a very, very sick Bella, wasn't even awake to show off our movie for this evening. Bedknobs and Broomsticks. She was sleeping in Grandpa's arms and running a temp of about 104 at this point. I was counting down the minutes until I could give her another dose of motrin.
Many of the foods we at this evening came directly from the meal Ms. Price served the children when they first arrived at her home.
Appetizer #1 - crackers topped with Mango Wurzle Jam - Ms. Price notes that this is available at the dinner table.
Appetizer #2 - Stuffed Portebella Mushrooms in honor of Portebello Road, a wonderful place that Ms. Price and the Children visit during while searching for the book. These were stuffed with lump crab meat and cheese. Delicious!
Kennedy shows off her appetizers
Appetizer #3 - Stewed Nettles - ok, not really. Ms. Price tells the children they will have stewed nettles. We purchased italian wedding soup instead. The spinach resembled nettles!
Main Dish #1 - Toad in the Hole - This is a picture of it before baking. This is a dish requested by the children when they arrive at Mrs. Price's home. It is essentially sausages baked in yorkshire pudding and topped with cheese. It was delicious!
Our 3 dishes for the evening. Toad in the Hole, Bubble and Squeak, and Cabbage Buds
Main Dish #2 - Bubble and Squeak - a traditional English dish prepared by mixing mashed potatoes into shredded and sauteed cabbage along with mixed vegetables. It is then cooked on a griddle like a pancake. These were
Cabbage Buds - are actually brussel sprouts. Not my favorite vegetable, but the girls (except sleeping Bella) all ate one. Kennedy even asked for seconds!
and for desert . . . ..
BEDKNOBS!
except our bedknobs were not made of metal, ours we made of caramel apples. YUM-MY!
