Passport Expiry....

Ok, I'm sure I've seen this before but I wanted to double check.

I'm off to WDW next march and my passport expires end of March.

Do I need to get a new one?

I have this recollection about there being a deal with the States so the passport is valid right up until it's expiry, rather than the usual "6 months prior" thing...

I thought the US was one of the places that did want it to be valid at least 6 months after your trip. Maybe it is the airline? Have you checked with whoever you are flying with?

I agree, most airlines require you to have 6 months left on your passport. In theory, you can enter the US with less than 6 months, but the date of expiry of your admittance (which is usually 6 months) would reflect the time you have left on your passport. I'm pretty sure this is the reason that to avoid confusion and hassle, most of the airlines insist on the 6 months rule.

I'm not sure if you are aware, if you apply for a new passport early, you can get up to 9 months unexpired on your old one transferred onto the new.

If you are a passport holder from anyone of the following countries, the requirement that your passport be valid for six months beyond your date of departure from the U.S. is waived.

Your passport must be valid on entry into the U.S. If the passport is not valid for the duration of your stay, you will be required to apply for a new passport from your Embassy while in the U.S. If your visit will be of short duration during which time your passport will expire, we recommend that you obtain a new passport before traveling as you will be admitted only until the date on which the passport expires. Such action before you depart for the U.S. will save you the inconvenience of applying not only for a new passport, but also an extension of stay.

GB have the agreement.

We flew in Aug, came back in early Sept, and all our kids passports expire in the next couple of days.
The girl on immigration just commented that we had got a trip in before they expired!

For Immigration all you need is a valid passport. This should also apply to the airline, BA & Virgin both stick to the info provided by US Immigration, other airlines might not, check with them. Who you flying with.

Read this it states the 6 month rule is waived for us on the Visa Waiver program.

Cool, thanks for confirming that for me guys. I'm flying with VA so there shouldn't be a problem.

I thought it was only 90 days under the visa waiver scheme?

You can renew your passport now and get up to 9 months added on to the expiry so you won't lose anytime.

I would always rather have extra time on the passport just incase

If you are going in March and the passports expire at the end of March you will need to renew them when you get back so why not just do it now?

Doesn't it depend when you intend to use them again? I don't see the point in renewing a passport if you're not going to use it again for another year. It's a waste.
I didn't renew my daughter's, because when we next need them, they will be 16, and I can get them adult passports!

Doesn't it depend when you intend to use them again? I don't see the point in renewing a passport if you're not going to use it again for another year. It's a waste.
I didn't renew my daughter's, because when we next need them, they will be 16, and I can get them adult passports!

I wish I had the time! I originally opened the account way back to ask a question (I think!!) about Halloween; but he spent more time on than me, so 'acquired' it!!
I then became re-acquainted when I had to plan our trip this year!
Still, I've been making up for lost time
