The Sea Witch Stole My Voice! Our Two Week Land and Sea Adventure! COMPLETE 4/12

I'm back home and all caught up again. Love the updates! Sorry that last hiking trip was so painful. :scared1:

BC TRIP CONCLUDED: Time to wrap this sucker up!

So the next morning when I woke up and strolled upstairs I was greeted with this beautiful view.

P114.jpg

That is smoke folks, overnight the smoke from the forest fires had filled up the valley. The visibility was horrible and it just got worse as the day went on.

Today was our rest day anyways but due to the smoke we were pretty much restricted to indoor activities anyways. When you stepped outside you almost feel the smoke around you and the smell was really strong, it wasn't a bad smell just smelt like a log fire burning.

We didn't do too much this day. During the morning the guys played squadleader again, boring!

Then we went to visit Grandma and also stopped at the grocery store to get some steaks to grill for lunch.

Dad got really angry at Alek and I because we were arguing in the store (I really don't think we were being loud) and we "embarrassed him in front of the whole town". So he screamed at us in the car and then Alek told him he was a hypocrite because Maria is louder and more embarrassing out in public. He also said a few other things to Dad that put him in his place but I can not repeat them here.....

Back at the house Dad grilled up the steaks and supposedly Maria and Angelica said there were going to have some too. Oh yeah, Maria had still not said a word to us, we were all still totally in the dark.

The steaks done Dad called Maria and Angelica up for lunch. Well what did they do? They took the steaks, put them in the oven for later and then left again to go watch tv. WTH?

We were all so confused and when Dad came into the room and asked where they were and we told him he was pissed!

Alek, Erich and I went out to eat on the balcony while Dad went down to "talk" to Maria. I think what Alek had said to Dad in the car had kinda gotten through to him and then that combined with her weird/bad behaviour made Dad lose it. We could hear him screaming at her through the window. He kept trying to get her to tell him what her problem was but she wouldn't say anything. Psycho witch.

Dad came back upstairs still with no answers but much calmer and we had a nice lunch without the annoying stepfamily.

That afternoon we watched a documentary about a team that climbed Mt Everest that was very interesting and also very sad. Personally I think it is crazy to even contemplate climbing that mountain for recreational purposes let alone scientific reasons.

I think we may have also watched some stupid Kung-Fu movie that afternoon as well.

Walking around the house I noticed that Maria had several windows open, Is she crazy? It is probably a good idea to keep the windows to your house closed when your home is engulfed in smoke from a forest fire. I was wondering why I could smell/taste the smoke while inside the house.

For dinner Dad took us down into town for KFC and to see Grandma again. We saw an "interesting" fellow in the KFC. He came in wearing no shirt and no shoes and his entire butt/boxers were hanging out of his shorts. I have seen guys with slightly drooping pants with their boxers showing but he may as well have not been wearing his shorts at all and just the boxers considering how low he was allowing them to hang.

The next day we woke up and it was even smokier than the day before so hiking was off the agenda. I was secretly glad for this as I was all hiked out for the trip.

We spent pretty much the whole day lounging around watching movies. We watched The Bourne Trilogy back to back.

We went down into town for dinner and to see Grandma, this was our last night in BC so this was the last time we would be seeing Grandma this trip. She was sad to see us go and kept asking us why we had to leave. :frown:

Back at Dad's we decided to watch Conan. What a terrible movie! We just about died from laughter when we watched the deleted scenes/bloopers though, oh my gosh, way too funny. I think Arnie had maybe 5 lines the whole movie and he was the "star".

We hung out upstairs talking for a while after the movie. Erich stole Dad's reading glasses and decided to take some pictures looking "intellectual".

We went out on the balcony and took a look at the moon through Dad's telescope. The smoke had turned it a strange orangish-yellow colour.

Alek then stole the glasses from Erich

We stayed up pretty late chatting but eventually we had to go to bed as we had to wake up at 4am as we were leaving at 5am to catch our early morning flight home.

The time to leave came, our bags were all packed in the car, we double checked our rooms to make sure we didn't leave anything behind and then we hit the road. Oh yeah, Maria and Angelica didn't bother to wake up to say goodbye, they didn't say goodbye the night before either, how nice. And Dad says that I am the rude one when it comes to interacting with them.

Luckily the smoke had cleared some overnight, I had been a bit nervous that the smoke would cause problems for our flight.

We said goodbye to Dad, and then we were on our way home. Eight hours later we were landing in Ottawa and got to tell Mom all about our interesting week. Mom got a good laugh out of it and couldn't believe the way Maria acted the last half of our trip. I was glad to be home and not even a week later I started back at school and have been super busy ever since.

That is some thick smoke! Did your dad ever take Maria and Angelica (inappropriate name so it seems:rotfl:) on a hike or two?

I ask because I think they fell down and got a stick up their behinds that has never been removed. :thumbsup2

wow interesting last few days, it is nice to see family but it sure is nice to go home again huh

I'm sorry about the Step mom.....that's your Dad's choice....

Sounds like it was a good time overall....except for the smoke and the stepmom and sister and the hike up the rocks and the annoying brothers...wait....was it a good time?:)

 I would say it was about 85% good times 15% not so good times, so a typical family get together.

Something woke me up at 5:30 on our second day at sea. Way too early to be awake! I decided to take a look outside before heading back to bed to see if I could get a sunrise shot. Here is the nest I could do at that horrific hour.

I went back to sleep after that and woke back up around 8:30. I jumped in the shower while Mom went up to Topsiders to grab us a light breakfast. We didn't want to fill up too much as we had our Palo champagne brunch that morning!

Mom brought me back some bananas, a chocolate croissant and a bowl of fresh fruit.

I decided to sit out on the verandah and enjoy the beautiful morning while Mom decided to take a stroll around the ship.

You can see my Alice travel journal on the table there. That is the notebook that I write all my trip notes in so I can remember everything for the trip report! It also comes in handy when the family is debating about how something actually happened on the trip, I can just pull out the notes and find the right day and settle the matter.

Once Mom came back to the room it was time to get dressed for brunch. Palo has a dress code, it is more relaxed for brunch than dinner but you definitely can not show up in shorts and a tank top.

D10007.jpg

On the way to brunch we stopped in at the Buena Vista Theatre to see the first part of the Behind the Scenes talk about UP! UP was getting released in theatres that Friday and we had one of the directing animators for the movie on the cruise ship with us. He was giving two behind the scenes talks about the movie during the cruise, one for just the adults and one for everybody. Unfortunately we didn't get to see much but the trailer before we had to cut out for our reservation.

We had the first brunch seating of the day which I believe was for 10:30 or 10:45.

We were the first ones to arrive at the restaurant and they weren't even seating people yet so we wandered around the area just outside the restaurant and took some pictures.

The bathroom smelled so nice! I know that is a weird thing to say about a bathroom but it is true. The soap also smelled wonderful.

Palo is the adult only restaurant on the ship, you have to be 18 or older to eat here and it requires a special reservation. You can book it online before your cruise or once you are onboard. It is very popular, especially the brunch, and the spots fill up quickly. Mom and I weren't even able to book the brunch ahead of time, we had to wait until we got to the ship and were lucky enough to score one of the spots they save for onboard booking. Palo brunch is only served on sea days, dinner is served every night though. They also have a tea service here on sea days as well. It costs $15 extra per person to eat here, that includes the tip. It is worth every penny!

Mom and I were the first to be seated and were given two choices of champagne. I chose the regular champagne and Mom decided to try the pomegranate champagne, both were really yummy! I had never had champagne before and I am now a fan!

The napkins were folded like tuxedo jackets, so cute!

Our waiter came over and took us on a tour of the buffet. There was a seafood table, cheese and bread table, pastry table and a dessert table. There were also several dishes that you could order from the kitchen. After our tour he set us loose to fill up our plates.

Funny Story: The restaurant was still really empty as we made our way back to the table with our full plates. Mom went back to the table before I did so I simply went over to where she had sat down. Turns out she had sat at the wrong table! :lmao: It felt a bit off to me but I figured it must be our table as Mom was sitting there. One of the waiters had to come over and point out that we were actually supposed to be two tables over. :lmao: Mom was super embarrassed.

Mom's first plate, almost exclusively seafood

D10030.jpg

My first plate, lots of carbs and cheeses

D10031.jpg

Let's see if I can remember what everything was going clockwise:

Cheese Danish (powdered sugar on top)
Sticky Bun
Seasame Roll
Chocolate Croissant
Cinnamon Roll
Cheddar Cheese with Port Wine, AMAZING! SO GOOD!
Brie Cheese, also very good
Stollen bread with whipped cream and berries, delicious! Side note: You can get the stollen bread at Goofy's Galley in the morning, it is just the bread though, no whipped cream or berries.
I also had some Blue Cheese and Walnut Bread which was sinfully delicious. I would pay the $15 just to eat that, so so good!

By far my favourite things from the first plate were the cheeses and the Blue Cheese and Walnut Bread, everything was very very good though.

Our waiter stopped by while we were enjoying our meal to get our orders for the kitchen. Mom ordered some seafood dish and I couldn't decide between two of the pizzas so he had them make me a half and half.

D10032.jpg

So I got half pepperoni and half Blue Cheese and Grape

D10033.jpg

You are probably thinking that the Blue Cheese and Grape pizza would be disgusting, it wasn't, it was delicious! I was being adventurous when I ordered it and I was delighted that it was so good.

I was full after I finished the pizza but I had to try some of the desserts, Mom also went back to the buffet and got a few more of her favourites.

D10040.jpg

I decided on a tiramisu and a cup of chocolate, both were excellent but the chocolate was so rich that I could not finish it.

D10041.jpg

As we were finishing up our meal our Dis buddy from terminal got seated beside us. We just kept running into each other!

We thanked our waiter for his excellent service and he said he was looking forward to seeing us again when I came back for dinner on Friday.

Side note: Because you pay $15 to eat here there is a bill you have to sign at the end of the meal and there is an option to leave an additional tip if you received excellent service.

Some pictures of the restaurant

We had a window table so we were able to look out at the sea as we ate.

They pretty much had to roll us out of there we were so full!

The Palo brunch was by far the best meal we had on the trip. Definitely eat here if you ever have the chance, it is worth the extra money!

Man that food looks SOOOOOO good!!!!!! Much better than the Taco Bell I had for lunch....

Palo is one of my favorite restaurants--EVER. It's sooo good. The food is always good and the service always excellent.

Thanks for taking so many good pics of the food...that dessert table......mmmmmm......they should let you sit for an hour so you can have enough room for dessert and not have to be rolled out like everyone always seems to need to be.....

If only all our meals could have been at Palo! That would have been bad though, we would have come home 20 pounds heavier.

I was annoyed when I reviewed the pics back at the room and some were blurry, I guess I was just so hungry that I was careless with my photography, I just wanted to dig in!

How was the your trip and the Expedition Everest challenge?
It was fantastic thanks, very busy, very hot and then very wet :rotfl2:

Your Step-Mom sounds very odd, so rude not to eat with you and to not say goodbye! That smoke looked horrid but at least it saved you hiking again :rotfl2:

That brunch looks amazing and so much food :faint:

THe seafood table alone is worth more than the $15:thumbsup2

Poor mom sitting at the wrong table:hug: I would have been embarrassed too:guilty:
