Divas, Zebra Domes, and Pixie Dust! A Week in an African Paradise! New TR Link Pg.145

This is cool. I never saw it.

They were in a basket near the back registers.

Love the AKL and giraffe pictures. Just a few weeks ago, I was standing at all of those places, looking at the same signs, the same giraffes, the same flamingos.
Or flamingoes. They are both correct.
We have such a weird language.
It's really hard to explain it all to seven and eight year olds, since many adults don't even get it.

I am sorry to say that I don't think a visit to AKL is in our October plans. There just isn't going to be time. I love going over there, though, because it is an activity in itself.

I couldn't decide which one was the correct plural version of flamingo -- I am glad they are both correct -- makes me feel better since I teach language arts and all! ;)

I have been trying to decide if we can fit in an AKL visit ourselves -- I am thinking either that Thursday when we arrive or that Sunday morning before we leave. I saw a Kidani coffee mug with giraffes on it on somebody's TR, that I think I need...:rolleyes1

I haven't read everything, but tell me again about your Mary Poppins plans. Jill and I might do a day trip to Atlanta for a Saturday afternoon showing of that. When are you going?

That would be so cool! Tickets go on sale December 6th, and it is running from April 29 until May 16 at the Fox Theater. The kids, my mom, and I would be going -- either a Saturday or Sunday performance. It would be so neat to coordinate our plans with you, Jill, and Dawn, and we could have a mini-DIS meet!

GORGEOUS AKL pics! My kids are starting to get into this pin trading thing and DS loved the AKL pin. Does every resort have their own pin?

Thank you! Yes, every resort has its own pin. Isn't that neat? I try to buy one from every other place that we stay. Soon, I will get to buy a CBR one!!!

As usual I am several days late to comment on your latest update. Barely Dis'd at all the past two days. And now I am reading at work and can't see any of your pics. So again, I rely on my vivid imagination.

I am sure your giraffe pics are wonderful. I really enjoyed all of mine and I look at them frequently. Sorry that you never made it back to AK park...poor Chelsea! :rotfl: I hope she got over it. And Connor with his references to the "Evil Sister". Too funny!

Anyway....thanks for the update!

Hi, MEK! You are leaving soon, right? Next weekend? Too exciting!

I loved those AKL giraffes! So fun to watch!

Connor is something else! ;)

Hey shocker:

Do they make one of there for fear of snakes and worms? eeeeeekkkkkkk!

That's what I need, too!

Connor is too, too funny. I bet he was sorely tempted to purchase the skull topped stick after hearing it could ward off evil emanating from sisters.:lmao:

Yes, he really wanted it, but I can't say that I am too disappointed that I am not tripping over the skull stick around the house! LOL!

I'd never heard of King Pin. You learn something new every day on the Dis boards. Does he have scheduled appearance times or is he like a greeter?

It looks like he is around the gift shop every weekday at 3:00 (I guess he gets his weekends off).

Wonderful pictures of your giraffe friends. I didn't see eye lashes. Males, you think?

That giraffe that kept looking at me looks like a boy giraffe to me. ;)

Hi Jackie!! Finally all caught up! I guess it was hot while you guys were there, huh? I don't think we'll ever go during the hottest months... DH was thinking it was a bit too hot in late April/early May. I thought it was nice but he would rather go earlier... I'm trying to convince him that February vacation - this year - would be good. :rolleyes1

I love the AKL! It's amazing that there are giraffes hanging out right there at the resort. :thumbsup2

Hi, Amy! February would be the perfect time to go, I think! (Of course, any month that includes a Disney vacation sounds like the perfect month! ;)). It was very hot there in June...

Watching all the animals at AKL was so neat!

Wow Jackie! I can't believe that I've never heard of King Pin before!! I'm so glad you shared that... I'll keep my eyes out for him in November!!

I love that special pin!!

Kathy

Yes, I bet Billy would love meeting King Pin!!! :goodvibes

Here we go, MEK -- it's exactly what we need!

I am really starting to get excited (and panicky) about our Food and Wine trip -- I need to start getting my act together.

NO PANIC ATTACKS allowed pre or DURING an ADULT-ONLY F&WF getaway...

NOT ALLOWED, CP, NOT ALLOWED...
THIS...

:jumping1:

Is all you are ALLOWED to do on an ADULT-ONLY F&WF getaway...

(well THAT, and eat and drink. ALOT. :rotfl:)

Happy Dog has SPOKEN. ;)

:lmao: If you say I can't panic, then I guess I shouldn't. :goodvibes

It's the first time we have left the kids for a trip far, far away since 2004 (sad, isn't it?), and I can't help but worry -- which is just being paranoid, I know.

And then there are all the things I haven't done yet that I need to do to get ready to go away. Although, I did finally call and make a kennel reservation for Nala today...

I've been ordering pins on Ebay to start a collection for my older nephew. I think he'll have fun meeting King Pin! So excited!!!

How's the school year going?

Jackie-I was just looking at my August Activity sheet and it lists Pin King as being at Zawadi Marketplace-in Jambo House at 3:00 Mon-Fri (in case anyone has their heart on meeting him)...

it looks like they bring out a pin trading board at Johari Treasures (Kidani) everyday between 3-3:45-but no Pin King there...

(Just in case anyone had their heart set on meeting the King...;))

BTW...(OFF TOPIC)...I have a new stack of books on my night table including the the Physick Book of Deliverance Dane, The Blue Figurine and Baking Cakes in Kigali...(the first two I'm reading for Halloween & the latter just looks like a great book-good followup...to staying at AKL) I'm feeling a little under the w-so I think I'm going to start one today...it's always good to know book enablers...:lmao:...I will only use my library card...I will only use my library card...(at least till the end of October...;) )

It can be quite addictive over there on the pin pages of ebay! ;) I try to stay away unless I am looking for a very specific pin...

That's what my sheet says as well so it must stay pretty standard year-round.

I just finished The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane last night (hence my absence from the DIS) -- I really liked it, and it made me want to go visit Salem. You'll have to let me know what you think of all the books -- I really enjoyed all three of those.

Our school's book fair was this past week, so Chelsea and I stocked up on all sorts of "girly" books to share. I am going to read one called The Cupcake Queen this weekend -- couldn't resist the cover (a cake stand with pink cupcakes) -- about a girl who has to help out in her mom's bakery -- I just know it is going to make me want to open a bakery!

I am just joining your TR and got all caught up. I see your link all the time in other TR I read so figured I would check it out. You trip looks like tons of fun and isn't AKL amazing? I love it there. Where are you staying for F&W?

This name is already taken!!!

Ebay pin shopping is totally addictive! I got a few, including a Cars pin for my nephew for a penny. The shipping cost more than the pin :lmao:

:welcome: Thanks for joining in and enjoying my TR!!! We are staying at CBR in just under three weeks! It is the only moderate we have never stayed at...I am so looking forward to trying it out.

:lmao::rotfl::rotfl2:

Guess I will need to come up with a different name.

The pins sound cute and quite the bargain! :thumbsup2

Back in the room after our visit with King Pin and the giraffes, we finished postcards and got ready for dinner. Before heading down to Boma, the hippo kindly ate all our postcards and promised to send them on their way!

241.jpg

We had a date with these rocking chairs after dinner.

242.jpg

Dinner at Boma was as delicious as always. We learned that Boma rotates their menu. We had never had the one they served this night (which was a Thursday). The seafood gumbo and salmon were absolutely divine!

We had a good laugh over Connor’s second plate -- the boy likes his French fries!

244.jpg

And Chelsea’s second plate. Yes, that is an assortment of desserts and a piece of salmon.

243.jpg

Then, Chelsea decided the desserts and salmon didn’t look right together, so she ate her salmon and transferred her desserts to a clean plate.

245.jpg

Chelsea was very excited to learn they had the same juice she had loved at Tusker House and breakfast at Boma -- she even got some in a to-go cup when it was times to leave.

After dinner it was almost time for one of the things I was most looking forward to -- folktales at the firepit!

It was scheduled for 7:30 so we went down a few minutes early and snagged some rocking chairs. Several more families joined us as it got closer to 7:30.

A little after 7:30 our storyteller arrived. Her name was Tsholo, and she was from Botswana. She spent some time telling us about her county, herself (her American friends, unable to pronounce her name, call her the African Queen), her country’s flag, her country’s animals…it was very neat to get a glimpse into another country.

While she was talking, Connor was rocking so hard in his chair that I was afraid he was about to launch himself right into the fire!

Tsholo also taught us some words in her language and a couple of songs. She then told us the story of Dubali and the Lion. It was a charming story, and Tsholo really got into telling it complete with sound effects, songs, and audience participation.

Chelsea loved it so much that afterwards she wanted a picture with Tsholo.

It was a little after 8:00, and we decided to head to the pool. Chelsea and Connor changed, I grabbed my book and the pool bag, and we all headed down. Charles went off to get us drinks (my pina colada was very refreshing), and we ended our evening enjoying the pool.

UP NEXT: The Beginning of Our Last Full Day!

You know, if you are going to stay at AKL you just have to have a night like you did. It sounds perfect! :cloud9:

Chelsea is her Mother's daughter. Switching out your plate totally sounds like something you would do too. Heck, I would too! :rotfl:

The folktales around the fire just sound so amazing. That is just one of the many things I love about Disney. They don't have to do something extra like that but they do. I just love it! :lovestruc

That storytelling sounds awesome!! I love King Pin! AAAAAAH I can't wait!! In an hour we'll be in the teens!

What a great way to spend the evening! I'm glad Connor didn't launch himself into the fire, that would have ruined a perfectly wonderful night.....

You know that Chelsea has this DIS thing down when she understands the importance of staging a plate for a photo!

Coming out of lurkdom to say I've really enjoyed your trip report, and I'm sad that you are to the last day. Your kids are adorable!

Only a half hour of story telling! I think I would have begged for "just one more story please!" like kids do before bedtime.

Great update Jackie! I didn't know BOMA rotated menus - I was wondering since there aren't many restaurants over there.

That story time at the fire looks really fun!:thumbsup2

Thank you kind mail hippo for our postcard! The boys loved getting it!!

I am totally NOT one of those "my food cannot touch each other" people but I was really glad to hear she got a new plate. I noticed the desserts rearranged and thought the salmon juice would not be good mixed with the sweets! :scared:

Storytelling and swimming sounds like an awesome end to your day!!
