The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

I forgot to add -- Kathy, it must be so nice getting to spend so much time with Kyle. I hope that is making both of your transitions easier.

The kids and I are spending the weekend with Becky and John. I'm going to the fish market shortly to procure whatever looks the best. Our tentative plan is fish tacos today and fra diavlo tomorrow.

I wish it could stay this way but classes start Monday so I won't be seeing him nearly as much.

Enjoy your weekend, sounds yummo!

Kat, I know your in hog heaven...enjoy the boys:grouphug: Please tell Kyle how proud I am of him & this giant step.

If anyone saw me 3 o'clock this morning I would have been locked up!
In the rocking recliner with the dog calming her & singing Frank Sinatra tunes by the light of a flameless candle!!!:rotfl:

Will do!

TOO funny!!!!!!:rotfl2:

:laughing: The things we do for our furry family members!

I went to a lovely brunch this morning - fruit, asparagus, egg casserole, and cheesy grit casserole with homemade scones and champagne.

This afternoon I have a back to school party for 3+ hours. DH is going to a "jam" session with some other musicians while I'm at that. We have been invited to a live music burger cookout thing that a local grocery does but we'll see if I'm still standing by then. After being in the pool for 3 hours with children, I may just need to drive through McDonalds and call it a day.

Tomorrow is promotion Sunday, start of fall activities, and the beginning of a book discussion and new Sunday school class I'm heading up so I need all the energy I can save up!

Today is the start of our Fall cleaning. We've had the kids cleaning out the garage, and it is a huge job. We've filled car with stuff to take to Good Will, so that will be on the list for this afternoon. Once the kids are done, we're going to take them to the Kennecott Copper Mine. It's the largest open pit mine in the world. It's so large, you can see it from space. They have a really neat museum, and stuff to look at.

I'm not sure what we'll have for dinner. Probably some mac and cheese for the kids, and sandwiches for Alan and myself. I try not to cook too much on Saturdays. We do have some leftover meatballs from a wedding reception we helped with, so maybe we'll finish those off.

Alan and I went to see Angels and Demons last night, and I really enjoyed it! I thought it was a much better movie than DaVinci Code! I think we just really enjoyed being out together without the kids. That's always a refreshing thing; just what the doctor ordered.

Kathy - enjoy your time with Kyle. It's nice that he can come home once in a while to "help" mom transition.

Nancy - please don't put Buddy in the freezer! We need the Buddy stories!

Aimee - don't work too hard. You've got to take care of your health!

Maria - I'm still praying for Leona, Lily, Greg and you! Take care of yourself, and pamper yourself at dinner tonight. Let it be something you love that you never have!

Just a quick check in ...sorry have not had time to catch up since Thursday.

We had DSD wedding ceremony yesterday. She is happy so that is all that matters. DH & her had a good cry together, it made him feel so loved by her which was nice. She looked very pretty. The location left alot to be desired. It reminded me of a hotel room you see online and then get there and it is a dump. The pictures online for the chapel were so darn deceiving.
The kids were a big hit. I had to laugh because DH's EX-MIL would not let Emma go. I am sure his EX loved that. :lmao: We are taking the newlyweds out to dinner tonight, so no cooking for me tonight.

We have done some car shopping the past couple of days also. Today we walked out on a Toyota dealer I thought he was going to cry when we said no deal. It is such a game...he went from $2500 :lmao: to $6000 for my trade in within 20 minutes. DH stood up to leave and laughed at $2500.
Then the payment started at $419 a month and was at $329 a month as we were going out the door. Sure the phone is going to ring in the next day or two.

Opinion question...DSD registered for gifts at Bed Bath & Beyond. Now keep in mind she registered for three pages of stuff because she has nothing. But alot of what she picked are ridiculous things (electric razor, 9 pillows, 7 bathmats, keg dispenser :lmao:). I know she is young and has no idea and unfortunately her mother is no help. Would you buy just what was on her registry or do you think it is ok for me to pick up things at other stores for cheaper and also pick up things I think she more. I hate buying people things off registries that are not something I like.

I am thinking of getting her pans, knife set, baking set, corningware, and glasses. We are going to spend a nice chunk of money and I just want her to have what she needs. Sometimes it is hard being a stepmom. I just don't want to offend, but I have more of a domestic clue than her DM. I just want to buy her quality stuff that will last.

Ok now I am rambling.

Ann, I'm glad that things worked out with the wedding and that your DH and DSD had their cry. I would get her what you think that she needs. My SIL registered at BB&B and for stuff that was :confused3. It was unfortunate becasue a lot of what she registered for was only available online so when folks showed up at the store they were SOL. Unless you shop there you would not know about the online thing.

Maria- Sorry about the storms but the visual made me :rotfl2:

Kat- enjoy your boys ( you will have more than Kyle now :)) Debbie still shows up with her friends now adn we all still feed them. I love it!

I am joining my sister adn DBIL and Debbie at a restaurant to hear Deb's friend. I think it is Mexican. YUM!

Hey guys! Quick check in...I have been reading and thinking and praying for all who need them. Things are good here...pretty uneventful so that is good.

Dinner last night was sausage pepper and onion heros and fries. Tonight is macaroni with meatballs and salad.

I will try to check in later...hugs to all!

I'm back and both of us survived:thumbsup2 all is good.

We caught some good sales. Kohl's had a sale if you bought $50.00 you would get a $10 gift card. We bought jeans and a belt there. Old Navy had $19.00 jeans but he was tired of trying on stuff. They also had $5 and $3 shirts. I love getting stuff that leaves my purse happy ;)

We bought shrimp and steak for dinner. I bought some catfish to grill tomorrow. It was hard deciding since everything looked good at Costco today.

Farmers market we bought pretzel bread, peaches, blackberries, fresh figs cheese curds and a really good wine for me.

Maria so Lilly likes Frank:rotfl2:

Nancy I am afraid of my basement  That is at least a month or two of organizing down there.

Kathy Have fun while Kyle is home

Aimee I thought you said live burgers :scared1::lmao: I don't know how you do all that you do. I am beat from just shopping for a few hours.

Glynis I meant to say I love you pics of the kids first day at school.

Ann I too would buy what I thought she needs. I am sure she will thank you when she goes to cook something and whalla she has the right pan for it. It is difficult to know what you need right out of the gate. All that pretty shiney stuff is pretty but not very practical.

Ok the couch is calling to me and I think I'll listen

Hi everyone. It's been a long day and I only really have the energy to say hi. I've been keeping up on my phone, but I can't figure out how to post.

I think of you guys often. Anyway, I'm headed for a nice long soak in a hot tub.

Hi Y'all,

It's late & I thought I could do a quick checkin. But that's not going to happen!

We had a nice day errand running & shopping. The weather was beautiful here. Still in the low 90's but the humidity dropped a lot.

Prayers for all of you dealing with the bad weather!:flower3:

How about arranging a play date with one of the kids. I would ask the teacher if there are any girls that she has been paired up with in class, they would already have a common bond that they do not even realize that they have. Also, is Alexis starting religious education or is this in school? If she had a separate class she might have one or two girls in common wiht her class. This helped Kady.

Thanks Nan that's a good idea! If things don't improve quickly, we have an orientation meeting with the teacher next Thurs. , I can discuss it with the teacher & get some names. I've been wondering why we don't get a class lists with names, adresses & phone #'s. I found out at the end of the year that we have to go into the office & pay $3.00 for it!:sad2: Religion class is in her school, so no Saturday classes for that.

Thanks for all the well wishes for Emma. If you saw her now, you would never have known that anything was amiss this morning. She had a hotdog for lunch! Definitely just a little 24 hr bug. DH said Emma was really tired yesterday evening, so that might have been the start of it. But it's been really sweet, her teacher has emailed twice and called about her today. Love her!

Sheryl--I hope alexis finds that buddy soon. That was emma's biggest fear starting school b/c the school she is going to is not in our town. But suprisingly 2 kids from our town are in her class. I ask her who she played with at school, and I more often than not get the shoulder shrug.

Whoa a hot dog?! She sure does bounce back quick! I'm glad Emma seems happy! Her teacher sounds like a gem. :goodvibes

Sheryl[/B] I sure hope some little girl figures out 2 friends are better than just 1 friends and a whole group is better yet. I am so glad those days are behind me. Now I just have to get ready for the"Why doesn't she like me?" stuff :rotfl2:

Wish me luck tomorrow we go clothes shopping.

I saw that your shopping trip went well, that's good! Yeah I'm not getting this one friend thing?

Sheryl - the whole "friend" thing is enough to drive a person crazy! When my twins started kindergarten, they each made separate friends and things were really good. The next year, they were in a class with a girl from their kindergarten class who had been a "best" friend to Leslie in kindergarten. At the beginning of first grade, she ignored Leslie, and started hanging around with Mary. It really bothered Leslie. I talked to the teacher about it, and she got to the bottom of it. Apparently, this little girl figured that since she had been friends with Leslie for one year, she had to be friends with Mary the next year. It didn't occur to her that she could be friends with both of them at the same time.

Glynis, In Pre-K 4 Alexis was friends with 2 little twins. She liked both of them, but then one of them got tired of her & she was still friends with the other one. But apparently the twin gravitated to being with her sister also, & the sister didnt want Alexis "in thier group" She was pretty upset over that, but found other friends quickly. But this girl stuff just seems to be starting earlier & earlier!

Hey guys, haven't read back but wanted to say we had a great, very wet day in Baton Rouge. Had rain all the way there and back and the entire time we were there but it didn't bother any of us. We took Kyle and one of his roomies out to lunch and had a new(for us) dish called "Angels on Horseback". It's a jumbo shrimp stuffed with an oyster, wrapped in bacon and lightly battered and fried....oh...my...word...AMAZING!!!!! We spent the rest of the time touring the campus and being shown around town. Kyle is actually coming back to NOLA tomorrow to get some reference letters for his job application so I'll be cooking for him tomorrow too!!!:goodvibes

Kat, I'm glad you had a good time even if it was wet? Kat that would be a shrimp & oyster en brochette! Sounds delicious! Was that at Boutin's or Mike Andersons?

It's funny how that happens, isn't it? When church was having all those "issues" a year or so ago, I would sit in meetings (and couldn't speak my mind, of course) and get so upset that I would double over in pain just sitting there! It's crazy!

We ran errands all day - I found Rose Regale at Sams for $17 for the large bottle. It's $22 at World Market so it saved a few dollars. Where's the cheapest y'all have found it? Costco has not carried it in my area, but thankfully Sams did. I want to hold it until momma comes in a few weeks but it's calling my name :rolleyes1
My gastro dr said that it's really bowel spasms & contractions. So when you feel like your stomach is in a knot, it sort of is! ;) I sure am hoping the meds situation comes to a speedy end!

The cheapest I've found Rosa is $16, but more often I can get it for $16.99 to $19. When I find cheap I buy a few!

The kids and I are spending the weekend with Becky and John. I'm going to the fish market shortly to procure whatever looks the best. Our tentative plan is fish tacos today and fra diavlo tomorrow.

They are such Antie & Uncle! I'm glad you had nice barbecue with neighbors!

We are first going to the farmers market. I love that place. it makes me feel good looking at all the fresh fruit and veggies, oh the possiblities! I wish my garden did better this year. My tomatoes, zucchini cuc's were/are a big disappointment. I still haven't had signs on my canalope or watermelon :sad2:

I hope to get back early to do some more housework. I hope to grill fish tonight. We will see if the weather cooperates

I wished I lived in a city with these huge farmers markets! And when did zucchini get so expensive? The regular grocery store & our little farmer's market wanted $2 a piece for zucchini!

Nan, rain, rain go away!!!!!!!!!:headache: I watching bad Lifetime movies, I guess the plus side of Greg being away. Buddy in the freezer:rotfl:
Last night we had brutal thunder & lightening storms. Again no power 11:30pm to 6:00 this morning. Hot as he** & Lily was trembling with the storm so I stayed up with her so she would stay calm & rest her body.......

If anyone saw me 3 o'clock this morning I would have been locked up!
In the rocking recliner with the dog calming her & singing Frank Sinatra tunes by the light of a flameless candle!!!:rotfl:

Please be careful driving anyone out n the storms.
I'm so sorry you had such a rough night! No power & a scared puppy.

I hope all of you dealing with the storms come thoug okay.

Just a quick check in ...sorry have not had time to catch up since Thursday.

I'm so happy that the wedding went well! I'm sorry the place wasn't nicer. But with a happy couple & a happy/sad bittersweet moments for Dad, that's all good!
I think if you know what she really needs go ahead and get it! I have to tell you, years ago when we were married, that DBob & friends put together an old refrigerator & keg, so they could have cold draft beer all the time, apparently draft beer it was necessary for working on cars & motorcycles!:lmao:

Good luck with finding a van! I hate the haggling with car dealers. Well I used to hate it, I've since learned from Bob that freaking out car dealers can be fun & quite beneficial to our pocketbook!

Gretchen, I hope you enjoyed a nice long soak in the bath! Take care of yourself. Prayers & hugs!

Good night, I can hardly type anymore!

Good morning everone not sure if anyone is interested but Direct airline has 50% off on flights through this week.

Nancy

Monday we find out if MIL can go to mayo hope it's good news for her.

Good morning all! I am just stopping by this morning, I have totally mismanaged my time.

I have a cherry almond Angel cake in the oven to bring to a wedding shower. I hope it is as pretty in "person" as it was n the picture. If it is good I'll post the recipe.

Dinner will be BLT's, Buddy is helping a friend cut and hang tobacco so he wil be hot and tired this evening. Lite food for him :thumbsup2

Hugs to my friends who need them, I think of you all often!

Sorry about the wedding location, but as long as they are happy and DH had such a special moment with her that's all that really matters.

I, too, would just get what she needs, she'll thank you for it one day.

Take care of yourself and don't worry about keeping up here.

I'd never had it with shrimp before! We went to Walk On's, everything was excellent.:thumbsup2

WFD - Grilled shrimp wrapped in bacon with chipotle bbq sauce, charred corn relish and a stuffed artichoke.

Good morning, everyone! Well, our weather has changed drastically! Yesterday, we topped out at 107 degrees, and today our high is supposed to be 85. It's raining right now, and that's supposed to continue all day long. It actually feels quite nice.

Dinner last night ended up being burgers at our local burger joint, Arctic Circle. Yummy! Alan and I also shared an order of sweet potato french fries. I could eat those by the bucketful! We had a great time at the copper mine, and the kids really enjoyed it. We took a few pictures, so I'll see if I can get them posted.

Today we're just having a lazy day here at the house. No church for us, so we're enjoying some family time. I think we may take a drive up our canyon later to see if we can see any leaves starting to change. I think it's still a bit early for that, but I love any excuse for a drive.

Dinner tonight will be pork chops with fried apples. Yummo! We'll make a salad out of our garden, and maybe have some summer squash with it.

Make it a great day, my friends!

The cheapest I've found Rosa is $16, but more often I can get it for $16.99 to $19. When I find cheap I buy a few!

Where have you found it cheap? I need to stay on the lookout but am rarely at places that sell much wine.

Last night, I fell asleep watching TV - just couldn't keep my eyes open! - so I moved to our bedroom at 8pm last night and slept until midnight. Got up, got a drink of water, watched 30 minutes of Big Brother After Dark, and fell back asleep :confused3 I think the last time I went to bed at 8pm was when I was 10

Today was a very busy morning at church but I was batting 1000 in the end. I started a new SS class, which took off very well, and put together a book study that also was well attended. You know, you spend all this time carefully putting things together based on what you think people are wanting and you just hold your breath as to whether or not anyone will show up.

I'm tired! :rotfl:

I think we're grilling chicken tonight to put on salads.

Hey All!
What a great thread...Im always battling for new dinner ideas!! Ive been watching the Food Network lately getting other ideas and inspiration from there!!

Great to see a lot of the "old regulars" and hope to meet some new ones!

Oh, and BTW: meatball subs for dinner tonite!

I was putzing down in the dungeon.....I mean the cellar.
 My cellar needs work too. That is on my to-do list once the kids start school again.

Ann -- I am glad the wedding went well. I too would get her what you think she needs, especially since she is young and probably has not had enough experience to figure out what styles or brands she likes the best.

Janice -- I'm glad you had success shopping.

Glynis -- It sounds like you are having a nice family weekend.

Lauri -- I hope your MIL gets good news.

Maria -- That is a cute image of you singing Frank to Lily.

Kathy -- The boys are still going to need to eat, even after classes start. ;)

Aimee -- I'm glad all your preparations paid off. Get some rest!

Sheryl -- I find it so hard to believe Alexis is having trouble with friends. She is so outgoing! I am sure she will be fine once the girls get to know her better.

We had a very nice weekend with Becky and John. The food was delicious. I think Beck forgot to photo the fish tacos from last night, but I know she has pictures of the seafood fra diavlo from today. YUM!

l really liked the Angel Cake today. I made less glaze but I think it needed more cherry juice to thin it out. It was like an icing. Very good!

1box white angel food cake mix
1 1/4cups cold water
1 1/2teaspoons almond extract
1/2cup chopped maraschino cherries, well drained

Glaze
2tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
2cups powdered sugar
2to 2 1/2 tablespoons maraschino cherry
juice

1.Move oven rack to lowest position (remove other racks). Heat oven to 350°F. In extra-large glass or metal bowl, beat cake mix, cold water and extract with electric mixer on low speed 30 seconds. Beat on medium speed 1 minute. Carefully fold in cherries. Pour into ungreased 10-inch angel food (tube) cake pan. (Do not use fluted tube cake pan or 9-inch angel food pan or batter will overflow.)2.Bake 37 to 47 minutes or until top is dark golden brown and cracks feel very dry and not sticky. Do not underbake. Immediately turn pan upside down onto glass bottle, or rest edges on 2 to 4 cans of equal height until cake is completely cooled, about 2 hours. Run knife around edge of cake; remove from pan.3.In medium bowl, mix butter, powdered sugar and enough cherry juice for desired spreading consistency. Spread glaze over top of cake, allowing some to drizzle down side. Garnish with whole cherries, if desired. High Altitude (3500-6500 ft): Prepare cake as directed in high altitude directions on box-- except add almond extract with the water. Bake 41 to 51 minutes.

I have a peach/blueberry cobbler for dessert this evening. I'll post if it is good. It is a WW recipe.

Bacon cooking on the stove an waiting for Buddy. I broke down and bought him white bread for his toast so he won't whine that I am making him eat cardboard on a BLT .

Nancy Sorry I must side with Buddy, BLt's belong on white bread not Whole Wheat.;) That Angel food sounds really good.

I am frying up the catfish instead of grilling it. Alex wants it the way his grandmother made it. We are having rice and corn on the side. I made a blackberry cheescake pie for dessert.

I now know why I have no tomatoes. My little dog minnie is eating them. I just caught her sitting in the planter eating them.pirate:

Any takers for a small theif?
