I am trying to install AOL 9.0 onto my new computer. After installation the machine goes into a restart loop. I searched on AOL and found that this is a known problem with instructions for correction for each of the various operating systems. The ones for mine, XP. say to log on in SAFE mode, uninstall the AOL software, restart the machine (it is confusing as to whether it should be regular or SAFE mode. I have tried both.) and reinstall the software.

I have tried this procedure a total of 12 times and still get caught in the restart loop. Has anyone else had this problem and how did you solve it?

ETA: The reinstall must be done from a CD so I have to use 9.0, the only disc I have.

So you fully uninstalled in safe mode
then rebooted twice, to make sure...

then tried to reinstall again in safe mode?

and it still does not work...

try searching on other forums for a fix, not just AOL's site.

or try a fresh install with your virus protection off. If you dare.

1. Uninstall the software from safe mode
2. Never install the software from safe mode

.. As for the looping over and over..
After you have re-removed the software
.. Go to windows update and make sure lastest patches for XP
are installed.. You may be on Service pack 1or 2 and need to be on 3

Worst Case AOL software has NEVER been kind to computers. Is there another choice for internet providers for you? If so TAKE IT!

or

maybe try a previous version. You probably will need to call AOL to get their help on this. They can check for other possible system incompatablities.

I have only rebooted once between removal and reinstallation so I will try at least one more. The virus protection was off.

I wanted to call someone at AOL but so far have been unable to locate a phone number. They obviously keep it a secret for a reason.

DH says this is what you have to do. :goodvibes

DH agrees with this! ;)

Thank your DH for his advice.

I actually have high speed through Time Warner in NH and Comcast in FL but don't use either for email. It's just convenient to use the same email addresss in either place. Also, in cases when the cable goes out, it is good to be able to use a dialup whether in NH, FL, or anyplace in between.

I may have to surrender and access AOL through the other providers.

Will try the suggestions tomorrow morning and see if I have any luck. Thanks again for your help, everyone.

Well, several days and many headaches later the problem is finally fixed. I managed to find a telephone number for AOL technical support. The first two calls resulted in the restart loop disappearing but the "We will install the necessary software" message remaining.

The third technician was the magician. She had me remove any file or folder that contained "AOL" and then install the software, both steps while in SAFE mode. It worked like a charm.

Thank you for your help and suggestions. Now I can read all the discussions I missed on DIS!
