I already have the room reservations and the tickets. He says he's not sure if we can afford it now. I'm so not happy. :(

start selling on ebay! Do something to make money... Have you checked the budget board?

It's not necessarily a bad thing if you can't afford it and have to postpone a trip. I would rather enjoy a vacation knowing it's not going to cause hardship than stress about money the whole time.

That's not to say it doesn't suck if you have to postpone a trip, but it does happen. The good thing is Disneyland is there for a long time and if it takes you a couple of months to save for a great trip, it will be there for you :thumbsup2

I hear you on the canceling trip. My husband is not to excited about spending the money for our trip in Feb. We get our tickets for Christmas gifts and our room for our birthdays. Really all we need is money for gas and stuff in the park. Im so good about stashing money here and there. Last year I had over $300 for extra money. Hang in there! Plus I need my churro fix!

What will show that you guys can afford it? If you have the money for the reservations, if you have the tickets, what is it he is thinking will absolutely destroy your wallet?

Honestly, this is what, the third time he has done this? At this point I would be planning a trip without my husband. Assuming you DO have the money, that you're not borrowing and putting yourself in a hole to go, I think he just doesn't want to go.

Also, I assume that with each cancelation you've been putting money aside, so seriously, what is he thinking is going to happen, money-wise? People do joke about the Mouse pickpocketing them, but for all of our trips, we have actually had to put money out there in order to get anything. There's nothing extra we've been surprised by. The only wild card is souvenirs, but that is EASY to plan ahead for by shopping at disneyshopping.com's outlet, at the Disney Store if you have one nearby (I hear they have good sales), and even the character outlet warehouse down the road from Disneyland.

Other than that, you know the transportation costs, you have the hotel, you have the tickets. You have access to the menus, and you likely know how easy it is to share food, buy kid's meals, and bring in your own food to supplement or substitute. There are menus, if I recall correctly, for Mimi's and Millie's and maybe Coco's online, so even that's simple. Hubby, son and I all shared a macaroni and cheese dish, with garlic bread and a big salad, from Millie's, and it was under $12. We were all hungry, too! Big meal.

You guys need to have a talk, b/c it really seems there's something strange going on in his head, to keep doing this to your family.

I have been saving cash in a can for over a year and I've got about $200+ already. I have several things for sale and if those sell it will be about $250.

The hotel is $402 including tax.
Gas to get there will be about $500
The cash I have will cover food
I have $120 on a disney visa rewards card for food if needed
The kids have been saving for their "stuff".

Tickets are already purchased (from arestravel.com so we have vouchers so I HAVE to pick up the tickets or we'll lose that money)

I'm hoping to get the money for the hotel through sewing some stuff. ALL that would be left is the gas to get there.

I understand he's stressed, but we've been looking forward to this FOREVER. I'm ready to leave him behind if he doesn't want to come.:headache:

Oh, I so hope you can work something out. Things have been tight for us lately too. I just cut back to a 4-day workday to be home one weekday with my kids, so we just faced my first paycheck with a 20% cut. We went from having plenty of extra play money for trips to really having to budget carefully. Our next trip is in January, and I wasn't sure if we could go. Two things that are help us budget for our trip: I signed up for a Disney Visa just before summer and have been using it for everything possible (I check it every two days and then pay it off from our bank account). So far I have $80 in Disney rewards. Also, I set up a SmartyPig account online - you can create various savings goals and then have small, regular amounts automatically deducted from your bank account until you reach your goal. I created one just for our Disney trip and so I can clearly see how much spending money we'll have and can budget a bit each month for it.

I've also made it VERY well known to all who will listen that a Disney gift card would be a great idea for my December birthday or for Xmas! We'll probably also get each of the kids one for xmas as well - kill two birds, you know...

I SO hope things work out for you. Especially in these bleak financial times, we all need a bit of sunshine, and what better place than Disneyland?!

Sounds like it is time to have a garage sale to me............we made over $900 at our last one and that paid for an alone trip for DH and I.

it's weird to come on a message board and post stuff and then read peoples opinions but i assume you wanna hear it or else you would not have posted so hear it goes. If your saving money for long periods and the kids are doing things to save for thier own stuff honey you cannot afford it right now. And i know " most" men are proud and do not like to say no but it seems for whatever reason you always end up with the trip back on so you must be nudging and or nagging him over it. and if your in a financial crunch already this isnt going to help. I suggest if you ""must continue to save like you have been doing. and when you get all the money for the trip then appoach him with the trip. Otherwise this is more stress on his back as a man and i assume he is a provider. If you go on this trip with feelings how they are now you will not have a good trip and leaving your husband is not an option in my book. You should go as a family when it won't be a burden on anyone!! not you, your kids or you husband. I also suggest if you are making a big deal in front of the kids to stop it.and let them know you will get to Disneyland at a later time or better yet say nothing at all unless asked. I hope that wasn't to harsh and my response was only to the OP not anyone else who has saved for Diney lol i know we all do it at some point. from what i have read i just get the feeling there is more to this...:surfweb:

Also Having reservations does not mean you have paid in full.... and this is where i think part of the problem lies am i wrong?

I'd be a bit concerned for you, if money is an issue here. You've been saving for over a year, and you have $200-maybe 250. BUT, you have about $1000 left to come up with. That's 5X what you've been able to save in a year and a half. By those calculations, it will be 7 years before you can go. Either your DH is just tight with money and doesn't want to spend it on a DLR vacation, or you truly don't have the extra money.
I'd look very carefully at all of this before you go without him. IF finances are truly tight, I can imagine it's very hard for him to have to be the bad guy and say you can't go. Especially if the kids are expecting it. I know how disappointing it can be to have to postpone the trip. I know how sad and hard.
Now, if it's a situation where he simply doesn't want to go and he's being a butt about it, then that's a different story, IMHO.

I may be losing my job about the time we are scheduled to go but I refuse to cancel and break my DN's heart and mine too LOL. So I've been doing things to help out with finances. I have planned to make $400 selling on eBay and so far I'm at $250 with several things on auction now. I sold my old laptop for $500 and that will pay for the hotel. I've worked a little overtime and DH has made a couple bonuses which has helped with the tickets. I put the hotel and tickets on my Disney Visa and then paid it off, so i gained over 200 Disney points which I will get to spend there on gifts and stuff.

Try to think of creative ways to save a few hundered. Babysit, get a second job PT, recycle, save change and cash it in, sell on eBay or craigslist. I also am very frugal these days. I use coupons for groceries, we'll be driving down so we're bringing a cooler of food and drinks so we don't have to buy as much. I used the entertainment book to book our room and will be splitting plates with DD because neither of us eat much. You can do it, if you put your mind to it and stick to your budgeting! Every litte bit helps.

My husband and I are in a similiar situation. We want to take the kids to DL, but we are very tight financially. However, when we decided to go, I started to save the kids family allowances, and when I had enough money, started to convert it to USD. By the trip I will have saved enough money to cover 2/3 of the trip. Hubby has counted on me to take the burden of putting aside as much of the trip money as I can so that we have less of a financial hit when we go, and theres nothing I like more than a challenge. We have decided to drive rather to fly, and that alone saved us around $600.00. I can justify putting the family allowance money towards the trip, as it's going to something that all of us will enjoy next year, and is something that the kids are really looking forward to. Saving the money can be done, you just have to get creative at times on how you do it, even if it means cutting back on Christmas expenses, taking advantage of sales, having a garage sale, etc. It can be done, even though it may not seem so at the time. By the way I'm a stay at home mom, and even so, I've managed to accomplish this feat, so if I can you can too. Good luck in saving the money for your upcoming trip!:grouphug: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Hi, I have had to post pone a trip too. And thats after the reservations and saving 700 dollars because our car broke and we had to use the money. But at first i was very upset then i just started saving and planning again and I was able to go 6 mons later. which seems like forever but it went soooo fast. You should point out that the tickets are going to cost you money to not go.

But a garage sale sound like a great idea everyone likes garage sales. I really hope you can work it out. But I would think about things like a sale or something. I know when we start saving to go I never go to the movies or go out to eat and stuff like that. Its sooo suprising how much money my fam. uses when we go out to eat and stuff. When you want to go out just think (if i take this money we are about to spend and save it for Disneyland I will get there even sooner.)

Well good luck!:thumbsup2

The money I've saved has literally just been extra coins, we HAVE plenty of money. He's just freaking out about the economy and the election LOL! :headache:

If you have more than enough funds to go, then go without him, if he really just cannot seem to be on the same page as you and your family, if you don't mind my saying.
No matter the economy, nor the elections, should keep him from going, when it sounds like you and he can more than afford to go. Also, what I am trying to say is, with the former elements, unless we are no more, we will continue to live, no matter what, I don't care who may be elected, or if the economy does not become better, anytime soon, for we will persevere ( I love that word, it's meaning, and that it dates back to the 14th century) and work on moving forward.

You need to listen to him. He's expressing that He is afraid of not being able to take care of you and the children should the economy worsen. He's hearing about lay offs and mabe even having a friend who has been laid off. He's worried.
In the rock paper scissor war over I wanna go and an econimical fear.. econimical fear wins.

You love your husband..you want to be able to enjoy the Family trip WITH Him... so.. figure out a way to postpone it.

Contact the people you purchased the tickets for and see if you can arrange to have them mailed to you..see how long they are good for..and if you can't use them at a later date..sell them on ebay.

I'm sorry you are disappointed.. remember your family comes first..then Disneyland.:goodvibes

I wish I had some great word of wisdom but all I can offer is a

We had to cancel our trip this year too.:sad2:

Well another option opened up and we may take a shorter trip in October instead. DH was MUCH more on board for this idea for several reasons
1. shorter trip=less money
2. Before the elections
3. No Knotts for Thanksgiving which would save another $200 :)
Soooo...

Crossing fingers SOMETHING works out.

Sorry to hear that money is tight right now. It is for lots of people and it's a rough time. I understand a DL trip is something to look forward to (and disappointing if it can't happen right now), but the economy is a bit scary right now. If he is not comfortable with spending what really does add up to a lot of money, no one will enjoy the trip.

Try to focus on family and security instead of a trip that can be taken when things are a bit more comfortable for all of you. It's rough right now, not only for you.

A happy and secure family can be better than a trip that places unneeded stress. Honest. (And if you don't end up going - use a LITTLE of the money to buy some lasting Disney keepsake instead :wizard: ).

Well that's good. And yes, going to another park in the middle of a trip IS much more money.

But what is he thinking is going to happen after an election? I mean, a friend's husband worries, but that's b/c he works directly FOR an elected official in CA. That makes sense. But for a general person I don't get the worry. We have elections every 4 years. :confused3
